As TheBlaze attempts to piece together the details of the Benghazi attack that left four American civil servants, including a U.S. ambassador dead, the mainstream media has been reticent. While the details appear confusing at first blush, the story as it is unfolding is relatively straight-forward.

On the eleventh anniversary of the September 11 attacks, a U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi — an extremely volatile town in Libya — was breached by al Qaeda and pro-al Qaeda militants. These rebels stormed the consulate, ultimately killing four. The Obama administration’s hair-trigger response was to blame a low-budget YouTube video critical of Islam as the catalyst for the terror attacks, however, emails have surfaced proving that the administration was informed no more than two hours following the attack that a pro-al Qaeda group — Ansar al-Sharia — was claiming credit for the carnage.

What’s more, it is now believed that via a predator drone hovering over the outpost in Benghazi, along with cameras on the ground, were providing a live feed of the events as they unfolded directly into the White House Situation Room. Add to this speculation that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did in fact heed requests by the Benghazi-based envoy to provide additional security amid mounting tensions in the region, but that her motion went unanswered by the administration.

At the end of the day, President Obama along with Sec. of State Clinton, General David Petreaus, National Intelligence Director James Clapper and others did not provide our diplomatic outpost with additional security and, for as difficult as this is to absorb, may have watched as a raging mob of Qaeda militants brought four Americans to their demise.

TheBlaze took time to speak with Middle East experts about the attacks to piece together what they believe may actually be going on.  Interviewed was former CIA officer Clare Lopez, decorated intelligence officer Stephen Coughlin, Andrew McCarthy who served as chief prosecutor of the Blind Sheik and scholar Daniel Pipes, founder of the Middle East Forum.

The Obama administration, according to Lopez, armed Libyan rebels — who we now know are al Qaeda– with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), surface to air missiles and other weapons to oust Muammar Gadhafi and forces loyal to his regime. In 2011, these rebel forces were successful in their goal, ultimately killing Gadhafi and dragging his body savagely through the streets of Libya. As reported in my previous article explainingthereasoning behind this:

The al-Qaeda rebels allegedly sought to oust Gadhafi because ironically, he had been cooperating with the U.S. to snuff out their presence in Libya. However, the Muslim Brotherhood, which had been coordinating with the U.S., offered its assistance in dealing with other insurgents in the region in exchange for help in crushing the Gadhafi — and likely Mubarak — regime.

Now some, like Lopez, believe Ambassador Stevens may have been a “pointman,” or “official liaison” in this weapons-running scheme and that he worked directly with Abdulhakim Belhadj, who serves as “emir” or commander of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG). Through Belhadj, it is also believed that Stevens helped supply weapons for rebels (al Qaeda) in Libya and later to Syria via Turkey.

It remains a mystery as to why Ambassador Stevens and three other U.S. civil servants were killed by the very rebels they appear to have been helping, but theories abound, including that the U.S. has outlived its usefulness in Libya or that al Qaeda simply wanted revenge for America having recently killed its number-two in command in a recent drone attack.

Lopez said she has never seen a situation where a U.S. facility is under attack and no administration officials send help.  As to why this would have happened, Lopez remains unsure, but it is possible officials including Petreaus, Clapper, and Clinton, not to mention the president, did not believe what they were seeing unfold before their very eyes.

“Maybe they did not know people were actually dying,” Lopez told TheBlaze.

members of the State Department likely clung to the belief that the attacks were indeed catalyzed by the YouTube video. Still, he affirmed that the administration did know with whom it was dealing despite wanting to portray them as democracy-seekers.

“The rebels we were helping were known al Qaeda operatives,” Coughlin told TheBlaze in an exclusive interview. “Of course we were training them. I think it’s possible that the ambassador was working with al Qaeda and didn’t even know he was.” Coughlin added that his thoughts were “purely speculative.”

“Within weeks of Gadhafi going we had al Qaeda flag flying in Benghazi.” He also pointed out that LIFG — Belhadj’s guerilla group — along with al Qaeda were the “largest group of fighters we engaged in Iraq.”

“They are laughing [at us]…They had no intention of being our friends. We were used and are still being used.”

Recall that the Muslim Brotherhood objective is to take down their enemies by our own (America’s) hands.

Coughlin also stressed the importance and role of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), a 56-member Islamic-state body, as key to understand the Muslim Brotherhood and its objective. TheBlaze will soon be profiling the OIC and its significance across the Maghreb.

Daniel Pipes, scholar and founder of the Middle East Forum agrees that we should treat and view all Islamists an equal threat, but that an unofficial U.S. policy adopted in 1992 attempts to differentiate violent from “non-violent” Islamists, the latter of whom America would aid. Of course, the term “non-violent Islamist” is an oxymoron given the fact that they believe in jihad.

If in fact the U.S. was arming al Qaeda militants in Libya, Pipes said it would be “a shocking piece of news if true” and noted that it would also be a “major breach” of U.S. policy that has, until now, been embraced by both Democrats and Republicans.

Pipes also explained the widely held reasoning among elected officials that it is better to have “elected Islamists than dictators” in power. While the Mideast scholar and author is not fully convinced that the U.S. was arming violent militants in Libya, he did cede that the mere thought of America helping al Qaeda is “clearly wrongheaded” and would be shocking.

If Stevens was the point person, Pipes, like so many of us, question why the militants he was aiding would do him harm. After all, it has been well established that Stevens had great sympathy for the Libyan people. “So much is murky here.”

“There is an argument against this whole interpretation [gun-running],” Pipes said. “Stevens was their main ally.” As we delved into the potential reasons for consulate attack and the administrations response, Pipes ceded that the White House may not have expected al Qaeda would attack if we were in fact helping the militant group in Libya.

But sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one, and “incompetence must not be ruled out as a cause.”

Andrew McCarthy, chief prosecutor of the Blind Sheik (yes, that Blind Sheik) sees the problem in Libya as having been caused by foreign policy decision makers and “gurus” on both sides of the political aisle. With regard to Syria, especially, “no one wants is to get U.S. troops involved” so it is possible that gun-running may have been the way to go about it covertly.

“Congress will have to dig into this but it’s possible that that was going on,” McCarthy ceded in an interview with TheBlaze. He also noted that the U.S. has been aiding and abetting the Muslim Brotherhood.

Touching on what Pipes said regarding the unofficial U.S. policy on aiding non-violent Islamists, McCarthy, author of the book, “Willful Blindness: A Memoir of the Jihad,” believes the idea of non-violence among jihadists is misguided and that such a policy ”could never work in the first place.”

He also affirmed that America is indeed arming al Qaeda affiliates

“Think about it a different way,” McCarthy began. “They are not turning on us — they hate us to begin with… They are capable of waging a war against the U.S. while also doing so against Assad, Mubarak and now in Libya.”

“They’ve [Muslim Brotherhood] been doing it for upwards of a quarter century. They wouldn’t be in power if it wasn’t for Obamas unlawful war against Gadhafi. We’ve already armed them. No reason for them to think that if they attack an American installation we’d stop working with them in Syria.” And given the history, McCarthy is likely correct. He cites a “mental disconnect” among lawmakers who believe that cooperating with Turkey is not akin to cooperating with the “bad guys.” The forthright author called this mindset “moronic” given that Turkey has aided and abetted a number of terrorists.

themselves with the region and players involved across the Middle East and North Africa. “It’s part of why I wrote my book,” he explained.

“If there wasn’t some ideological empathy [in the region] for al Qaeda, you couldnt fill the void [in Libya] in first place. Gadhafi kept al Qaeda in check.” McCarthy then castigated the president for his hypocrisy in calling  Gadahfi a ruthless dictator with American blood on his hands after the administration gave him diplomatic cover and worked with with the Libyan dictator because he gave up his nuclear program.

“Obama said he [Gadhafi] was a key counterterrorism ally — there was truth to that.”

McCarthy, who was featured on TheBlaze documentary “Rumors of War III,” suggested that we aided al Qaeda militants against Gadhafi because the State Department believed that people in Eastern Libya who fled to Iraq to fight against the U.S. saw America as a force merely propping up the Gadhafi regime. If America showed that it wasn’t, they would, goes the logic, stop working against us in Iraq. “They would love us to death,” quipped McCarthy.

During the interview, McCarthy and I also discussed the parallels between the U.S. aiding the Mujaheddin and a young Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan under then-President Jimmy Carter and the apparent gun-running scheme in Libya today. In both cases, America sought to arm what it then considered the lesser of two evils. History revealed, however, that it came at a very hight price.  And frighteningly, it appears to be repeating itself.

    don’t forget that obama and his administration were selling guns to al-qaeda. the “local” security, who was hired by hillary, were KNOWN jihadist with ties to al-qaeda.the arms to syria are going to KNOWN al-qaeda operatives. the muslim brotherhood, the middle men in all of this, are KNOWN terrorists.did YOU not KNOW that your government was dealing openly with terrorist and al-qaeda? the information was out there. why were YOU silent? will you not, finally SPEAK UP, ACT? now that YOU know, you are required to ACT. at the least, call/e-mail everybody you can reach in the government and demand action. to remain silent is cowardice.

    Glenn Beck reported that the liaison from Turkey, a guy that had been to the Whitehouse appeared at the Benghazi Embassy with Ambassador Stevens hours before the attack. When the attack began, the U.S. Military personnel on site were ordered to stand down. Even after three requests were made for help by Stevens and others, U.S. Military in the region remained under orders to stand down, while the U.S. State Dept. watched in real time video what was happening.

    If you know there is a plan in place, that would explain the reason to just watch the event unfold and the orders to the military to stand down. The real question should be, what was the mission or devised plan? Was this a scheme to kidnap Ambassador Stevens and exchange him for the prisoner the U.S. holds that Egypt wants so badly, the Blind Sheik? Is that why Egypt’s U.S. Embassy was attacked with protesters out of the blue, to set up the story about the video, because that story was offered out of the blue the next morning at the Whitehouse and was repeated by numerous officials as if it was scripted in a preplanned media announcement for specific individuals to repeat.

    In my lifetime I have “never” heard a U.S. Ambassador go out in to the media and give a public statement about an attack or conflict involving the U.S., that has “always” been done by our President’s. So for me, this was scripted & planned prior to the actual event. Jay Carney, Hillary Clinton and Susan Rice were carrying out their mission

    It is apparent that the President has some type of connection with the Muslim Brotherhood. Exactly what the nature of that connection is we most likely will not find out for years after he is rejected by the American people. I think once he is out of office his supporters will be absolutely flabbergasted at what has been going on.

    Fox News just released more news from that horrible situation. Apparantely, help was asked for, the men who lost their lives asked 2 times to go help and they were told to stand down. They went anyway against orders, saved some lives then died themselves while asking for help that was denied them. The government let all those people die. They stood by and watched them die. Those people were betrayed, and in doing so our government has betrayed us. What are we going to do about this? What can we do?

      This is what happens when we (globally) advance sociopaths to power over us…whether it be in religion, politics, or the corporate world. When will we value the Dalai Lama’s of the world, and allow them a country?

      In effect, if not intent, the setup appears to be to establish ties with the U.S. in military actions, then betray those ties to bring down a U.S. President and so further destabilized our government. Right? What is more harmful than finding out that the very group that attacked the consulate was trained by and equipped by…the U.S. under orders of the President? We keep getting sucked into believing we can work with these people when their mandate is simple and clear: Destroy the U.S.

      Do not for a moment think that Mitt will be any better than Barack. Mitt is a bullying corporate sociopath. Barack is a narcissistic egomaniacal sociopath slacker. Both are willing to objectify and exploit those “under them” to achieve whatever their goal is. Both are willing to lie and spin facts with their cohorts and cronies as necessary to achieve their goal. Both are greedy, selfish, and self-important. Both place political calculations as their Number 1 priority, above anything else, even friends and family at the end of the day. Both do a lot of dirt under the radar.

      Sorry but “reprobate” is not what they are. Just because their morals and principle do not align with ours does not make them unprincipled or amoral. They do not operate within our laws. I have been puzzled by what Barack Obama is for a while but I believe Dinesh D’suouza has a better grasp of some of the complexities in the film 2016. The part that was not really dove off into is the impact of Divorce, Absentee Father and Father Substitiution. I have a good deal of interest in this and have been researching it myself. I believe they did a disservice to America by not letting us have sympathy or pity for Barack as I do. Glenn says he despises him but I pity the man. Any/either way he should have never been President. God Bless his misguided soul full of distrust and loathing as it is. I pray his humbling before God comes mercifully.

    Panetta said we didn’t know enough of what was going on for us to send in relief. More like Amb. Stevens wasn’t important enough or he knew too much of the gun running to brotherhood to be allowed to live? So, if we send him, Hillary or BO to hangout in one of these places do we sit on our military during an attack?

    The Department of State has a very large budget and the Secretary of State has the discretion to apply that budget not just to long term security needs, but to short term ones such as described in Benghazi. Why Hillary Clinton thought she needed permission from the White House to implement necessary security measures is beyond me…she has the authority just as the Secretary of Defense has for securing military bases throughout the world. Panetta doesn’t need to ask permission…he uses his judgment, allocates the monies and makes it happen. Hillary is trying to push this failure onto the President to maintain her political viability…and the President is pushing back by putting this on the intelligence community (after the video explanation fiasco) to protect himself and Hillary…from what, I do not know. It seems that in the Obama administration, everything is fully centralized…so much so that they cannot get out of their own way when the time comes to make critical decisions. What a different story this would have been if Hillary acted appropriately with security measures and the Ambassador was saved because of her decision…would not the President also benefited in this election year by taking credit as he did with the death of UBL? All this points to is the continuing incompetence of the Democrats to do anything except shape perception and push a leftist agenda. Can’t wait for November 6th.

    Here is another theory for your consideration: Suppose those who stormed the compound sought to capture, but not kill, Ambassador Stevens, as has been suggested elsewhere? According to a very fine Special Report Bret Baier aired on FNC, the so-called “safe room” at the Consulate was little more than a small space with a steel grate separating it from the rest of the building. During the attack, RPG’s were reportedly used, as were small arms. If killing Stevens were the object, the safe room would have crumpled like a saltine under that firepower.
    According to one of the survivors, described as a Diplomatic Security agent, the place was set on fire, and the smoke prevented the DS agent from leading Stevens to (relative) safety outside the building. Despite that, though, the other reporting, including from the present Libyan government, was that “good” Libyans rescued Stevens alive and took him to the hospital, where he died of smoke inhalation. That was offered to explain the video of his body being dragged around, half clothed. Of course, the USG has not shared anything about the autopsy almost certaing performed on the four victims after their bodies were recovered.
    So – why work so hard to capture him alive? Was it an attempt a trade for him for jihadi prisoners? Possibly. You may recall that Israel traded many prisoners for one soldier. Ws it to torture him for what he knew? Again, possibly. Or punish him for aiding a rival faction?

    Barry is far too arrogant to admit he has made a mistake. He will stick to the story, then mince words, like a lawyer does, and weasel his way out of it, but he got tangled up in his lies, this time.
    There is no other way out for him, than to just admit he lied and he just isn’t going to do that.
    He should be brought up on charges by Congress, and impeached. He does not deserve a pension or healthcare for the rest of his damnable life.

    I might not be the sharpest tack in the box.However ,listening to the beginning of this about a “utube movie ” NEVER passed my smell test. Reading a myriad of information from both sides of this debacle and watching this unfold has given me a deep sense of sadness. This has turned to a smoldering anger and more distrust towards this WHOLE administration. SOMEBODY, anybody! get on this like a dog on a bone! Tear into these people in the government and prosecute them ..nail all of them!! Including their media lapdogs!! My heart goes out to the families of our people who were murdered there. May they receive closure and JUSTICE for their loved ones lost.

    For the past 4 years, Conservatives have been saying that Obama has a “pre-9-11 mentality”. It was not ironic, and it might have even been predictable that Obama starts falling apart at the seams on 9-11-12. This only highlights how far deep in the sand Obama’s head has been. For a President to not be prepared on that anniversary (knowing how dates are so symbolic to radical Muslims) is either the height of incompetence, or the most ignorant, stupid and/of corrupt President ever.

    On a different note, we have heard much about Ambassador Stevens. I respect the privacy of the other men’s families, but I wish we could learn a little about the other men who were killed that day.

    Geraldo this morning ranted on Fox about waiting until November 15th and ‘not politicizing’ the event, instead of admitting that the Administration has ONLY politicized it from day 1, when they ignored what was in front of their own eyes and chose to write a fictitious explanation.

    it’s not all their fault, though… with limited exceptions, msm is letting it happen, so why shouldn’t Obama have thought he’d get away with it?!

    it’s hard to even be too angry with him… this is who he is. but the officers who have not stood up to him out of a desire to stay in their position? they need to remember that the lion’s share of their job is protecting the soldiers under them whenever possible, so that the troops can fight knowing someone up the chain has their back.

      I don’t think anything will ever happen to the people at the top who orchestrated this. The only reason Nixon saw anything happen to him was because we had a media that did their job. Today our media is so in love with liberalism and progressivism, they’re just lapdogs to this whole thing. They’re complicit. They’ll make any excuse they can, bury any story they can, to keep their messiah in office so they can “Make history with a black president”. I really pray someone will have a moment of clarity and conscience, and will come forward to expose it all.

You may not want a war on terror but there is no way to pacify or capitulate except total surrender to religious tyranny. The world has never faced a global imperialistic threat like the jihadists.

    Meanwhile, American femme rights activists think if we don’t pay for their abortions and contraception that they are the victims of a “War On Women.”
    What a pathetic joke. Hillary Clinton, Debbie Wasserman, and Sandra Fluke need to talk to young Malala and discover what a war on women really looks like. In much of the world women face humiliation, torture, and even death if they want to vote, drive a car, or walk alone in a mall.

    We must stop supporting anyone or group that supports jihad to any degree, especially the Muslim Brotherhood, CAIR, & ISNA.

    Obama and Clinton are criminal traitors to this country. They are evil. What is most amazing is how law enforcement turns a blind eye to the criminality of politicians. They truely are above the law. It is not supposed to be that way. Honorable LEOs would arrest these vermin. Sadly, there are but few of them left.

      You really have to consider how many liberal judges will dismiss cases, and otherwise interact to come to the politicians’ rescue. Then, the individual law enforcement personnel will be put in the sights of those courts and the very same politicians. And, don’t forget how the lapdog media will go through hell and high water to destroy those law enforcement personnel.
