The former chief of staff to former Secretary of State Colin Powell on Friday called the Republican Party “full of racists” who want President Barack Obama out of office, not because of his job as commander in chief, but because of “the color of his skin.”

Retired Army Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, a Republican, was reacting to former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu’s since-retracted assertion that Powell endorsed Obama for re-election because of his race. While calling Sununu’s comment an “unfortunate slip of words,” Wilkerson said it speaks to a larger problem within the GOP.

“My party, unfortunately, is the bastion of those people — not all of them, but most of them — who are still basing their decisions on race,” Wilkerson told MSNBC’s Ed Schultz. “Let me just be candid: My party is full of racists, and the real reason a considerable portion of my party wants President Obama out of the White House has nothing to do with the content of his character, nothing to do with his competence as commander in chief and president, and everything to do with the color of his skin, and that’s despicable.”

Powell broke with the Republican Party to endorse Obama for a second time this week, prompting Sununu — a top Romney surrogate — to say, “he’s got a slightly different reason for preferring President Obama…I think when you have somebody of your own race that you’re proud of being president of the United States.”

Sununu walked the comment back hours later, saying in a statement he did not believe Powell’s endorsement “was based on anything but his support of the president’s policies.”

“To say that Colin Powell would endorse President Obama because of his skin color is like saying Mother Teresa worked for profit,” Wilkerson said on “The Ed Show.”

Wilkerson seconded Powell’s endorsement, saying there has been “steady improvement” under Obama and that “he needs another four years to make more improvements because there’s still lots of improvements that need to be made.”

With this jump again into the Political he is no longer someone I respect. If I voted for Obama for purely racial reasons (as I almost did) man up and admit it as my family members did. I voted for McCain because I had a clue what horrors came with redistribution. This current line of BS from Colon and his back door surrogate is purely cowardice. It was because of his fresh ideas as to how he would tackle the mess left by the Bush/Cheney administration by saving the auto industry, and bringing the troops out of Iraq and soon afghanistan, as well as putting the economy in a position to provide the loss of jobs to the people who’ve been out of work for the longest; however, all of this will be lost if he follows the Bush/Cheney cabal mentality and starts a war with Iran!!

  I best remember Gen Powell from my Army days when he was the V-Corps Commander in Germany (mid-80′s) when I was assigned to the NCO Academy in Baumholder (part of the 8th Inf Div {Mech} based out of Bad Kreuznach) which fell under V-Corps and Powell ultimately. I met Powell on a few occasions back then during a couple Change of Command and awards ceremonies.
  
  The major problem I had with Gen Powell was his push for affirmative action in the Military and the push to promote many who obvously did not deserve that recognition based on the totality of their careers. Many lame and lazy Soldiers (NCO’s and Officers alike became “ROAD Soldiers (Retired-on-Active-Duty) because the were undeservingly promoted way ahead of their peers who continued their non-performance and rode out their careers much like in the civilian sector.
  
  Endorsing Obama not only once but TWICE.. makes me realize that Powell hasn’t changed his stripes when endorsing the least qualified just because of the color of their skin…

The hope was he would move us past racial divides. The media defend his every action primarily because he is black. A Romney administration will be targeted from all sides, here and overseas. Most of western Europe has already surrendered sovereignty, and know a renewed America will again dominate. The best that can be said for this being is that it can parrot the party propaganda very well. Finally, who is this being anyway and what makes it’s opinion important?
