Des Moines Register Endorses Mitt Romney for President– First Republican Pick Since 1972

(Photo: Getty Images)
The Des Moines Register, Iowa’s largest newspaper, has just released its presidential endorsement– and it’s come as quite a shock to many. Having endorsed only one other Republican since 1960, many assumed the paper would continue the pattern and endorse President Obama. Instead, it offered a glowing review of Republican nominee Mitt Romney.
Though it praises the character of both President Obama and Gov. Romney, the paper highlights marked differences in the economic vision of both men:
The former governor and business executive has a strong record of achievement in both the private and the public sectors. He was an accomplished governor in a liberal state. He founded and ran a successful business that turned around failing companies. He successfully managed the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
Romney has made rebuilding the economy his No. 1 campaign priority — and rightly so.
The nation has struggled to recover from recession for the past 40 months. Still, the economy is growing at an unacceptably anemic rate of around 2 percent a year and could slip back into recession depending on what happens in the European Union and China.
The workforce is still 4.5 million jobs short of the nearly 9 million that were lost in the recession. Longer term, looming deficits driven by Social Security and Medicare pose the single greatest threats to the nation’s economic security.
The president’s best efforts to resuscitate the stumbling economy have fallen short. Nothing indicates it would change with a second term in the White House. [Emphasis added]
However, the editorial board was also quick to say that Romney shouldn’t adopt what they believe to be the “extreme” platform of the more conservative Republicans, implying that they are racist, sexist, homophobic, etc:
Romney should not squander an opportunity to build consensus in Washington by wasting time on issues that animate many in his party. We cannot rewind the clock on progress for minorities, women, gays and lesbians. We must make it easier for immigrants to come here to live and work legally and stop making criminals of those who are living here lawfully, paying taxes and raising families. The federal government must continue to insist on clean air and water and encourage clean and renewable energy. [Emphasis added]
However, their conclusion remains that Mitt Romney is the man for the job.
“Our discussion repeatedly circled back to the nation’s single most important challenge: pulling the economy out of the doldrums, getting more Americans back in the workforce in meaningful jobs with promising futures, and getting the federal government on a track to balance the budget in a bipartisan manner that the country demands,” they write. President Obama’s record thus far inspires little confidence that he’s the man to turn this ship around at this point, they add.
Obama for America’s Iowa Communications Director Erin Seidler tweeted just before the big announcement that it would be “hard to imagine” a Romney endorsement by the Des Moines Register, considering its recent editorials on the “extreme” position some Republicans have on women’s health.
“Tweet too soon?” one Twitter user responded.
Read the entire Des Moines Register endorsement here.

If you call e that connecting the dots, then I can not reach you. But I’ll try. Bush said given the information that a president is given that other Presidents would make essentially the same decision as he would/did. That was a frightening comment. But one could make whole essays for that pro & con without malice. Obviously I think Bush is wrong because Obama a has shown that you can ignore the information (Libya massacre).
Back to President Nixon. Nixon took us off the gold standard because the U.S. was hemorrhaging gold. He didn’t one day think let’s get off the gold standard. He had to many political worries. The financial advisers came to him & told him of the run on gold.
Nixon Vietnamized the War in Vietnam, successfully. The Communists did not win & Americans were no longer dying. A Democrat Congress snatched defeat from the Jaws of victory. Nixon kept his campaign promise to withdraw troops & yet kept our ally in the fight. This is what we wanted to do with Iraq & Afghanistan. He succeeded. Democrats reversed this.
I have major problems with the EPA. What Nixon didn’t was reorganize separate agencies into one organization. It might have happened without him & very shortly anyway. The problem is not the existence of the EPA. The problem is where to dr

I don’t fault Nixon for the EPA or OSHA. I fault Clinton, Carol Browner & other idiots for what they do when they get in control. But I would fault them if they got in control of any organization.
Nixon was a great man. He was flawed. And so? When the Democrats can think of a Senate seat as the Kennedy Seat & as being there’s where does that leave Richard Nixon?
The presstitutes hated him. As the Editor of Newsweek said the press is worth 15 points to John Kerry. How much was it worth in 1960, 1968 & 1972? ???????????????????????????? So when a politician has to get the unwashed undecideds who make up 15 to 30% of the electorate & the presstitutes can gin up a 15 point handicap. what does that do to a person. It makes the posters & readers here mad as hell. It would have no effect on Nixon?
Nixon was every but as good as JFK, who ran around like a satyr. JFK had a congenital disease that put him in excrutiating pain for which he took drugs. It also gave him the tan look. JFK won the televised debate. I guess an artificial tan & good hair will do that.
Consider good hair. Every president since Ford has had good hair. Maybe we should select the winner of via a highschool like popularity contest. Or maybe we can use the same format as a dog show.

He would have stayed a liberal governor, but they did not want to re-elect him, and now he has spent 5 years trying to bring his liberal policies to the whole nation.
There is another candidate for president who was also governor of a liberal state. He did a good job in his first term and they re-elected him. He did it without moving to the left or compromising his principles. His name is Gary Johnson and he is the best candidate running for president

Soy gave us a summary statistic. Sometimes that is all we have time for.
Personally, I would like to see what legislation a politician proposes & what he gets passed. Even if you don’t pass anything because opponents are line up against you that might be the best you can do.
If you are dealt a losing hand, how well do you play it?
If you are an army, which is outnumbered & retreating, how well do make the enemy pay for each inch of ground. Ever play a side in a war game where you know you will lose the engagement but success is determined by how long you delay them & how high of price they pay?
I remember Bill Clinton lauded for moving Arkansas from 48th to 46th in the nation in education. Sure, Clinton can’t be expected to move a mountain overnight. The thing is he spent a lot of money & after he moved on up, Arkansas moved back down to 48th after 1 year or two (at the most).
I want to see what legislation Romney proposed in Masachussetts. then I will judge that summary statistic you gave Soy.

Big reason is they don’t understand the concept that Iowa=Des Moines and that anything outside of Des Moines could possibly be part of Iowa as well. Course, that might be why most of the guys in the state government get away with trashing the rest of the state for the sake of Des Moines. Bet that’s where the disaster money went to that was given to the state to help Ceder Rapids for the flood, they claim they never seen a dime of it.
The other part is they are utterly liberal. Real News commented that Iowa wasn’t as conservative as people think. For the most part we actually are, it’s just most people fall into the don’t pay attention and end up listening to the same stupid rhetoric that has been tossed around since before I was born, which really ticks me off.

I too stopped reading the DMR years ago because it leans terribly left and the paper seems to think that Des Moines is the center of the universe. (the rest of the state be damned according to them, and a lot of residents that live there)
To highlight this fact – completely unrelated to the story here – do any of you remember a few years back when tornadoes were touching down up in northern Iowa and the DM station cut in on Wheel of Fortune a few times to report storm tracks and towns affected? On the 3rd or 4th interruption the meteorologist went on a several minute apology on live TV, for breaking into WoF, and explained that their broadcast was responsible for the entire state… and they had to break in on the show even though it was not threatening DM directly. Apparently they were getting angry phone calls from people around DM who didn’t care about the bad weather up north, because it was clear where they lived. (didn’t actually see the broadcast myself, but read this in our local paper)

If he does assume the office, I do hope that he will have both the House and Senate for this next go around. I think that we will see a stronger Mitt with fewer of the Dem-wits to have to compromise with to get anywhere. It gets me how so many here blame Reagan for all of those tax increases and some other laws that were passed. He had a Democrat strong Congress that could have walked all over him and could pass laws without the president’s signature. Unfortunately, he had to compromise with that Congress all to often.

Posted on October 27, 2012 at 10:25pmI quit reading/buying the Des Moines Register years ago because all it is is a propaganda piece for the liberals. Maybe the editors are slowing realizing they have made themselves chumps to the democratic party, only to be reinforced by the way Obama dismissed the paper assuming he would be supported.
Also, if you research it, the paper’s subscription numbers are going in the toilet primarily because they are NOT fair and balanced and Iowans are. The Register may be figuring it out – slowly – that Iowa is a swing state because of that balance.

Posted on October 27, 2012 at 10:31pm*******: saddest part of this is that we can NOT vote out the MSM the way we can the political parties. No matter who wins the White House, the Left controls the media. Just means that conservative Romney will face 4 years of Lefty Media Biased Harassment . Same as it always was : Lefty Obama gets a free pass for everything and the the conservative gets harassment for everything. Same as it always was. Disgusting.

They haven’t chose a GOP candidate for President in 40 years, which means statistically they have chosen many more losers than winners.
I suspect this will be yet another one of a string of their ‘losing’ years.

Posted on October 27, 2012 at 10:17pmI guess this is a good thing – better than if they had endorsed BO. But what’s this stuff about extreme views about women’s health? Thet are the ones that think it’s OK to kill unborn human babies – not us! They are the ones who want taxpayers to pay for women’s contraception – not us! And OUR views on women’s health are EXTREME??!! Well, I guess this endorsement it really is a good thing. Now we can all pray that Ohioans can come to realize that it’s their state government and Governor Kasich who are primarly responsible for their relatively low unemployment rate, not BO and the federal gov’t.

Romney is a good man – he will be a good president. But buckle up – Obama will show us his ugly face before he leaves the white house. Obama is bitter and VERY angry MAYBE because Michelle will divorce him when he loses!!! Although he should be dancing in the streets to lose Michelle.

Posted on October 27, 2012 at 10:13pmIt’s about time somebody in Iowa came to their senses! This is a historical moment. A newspaper that finally has seen the light and don’t support obama with the usual media lies and cover-ups. It’s a miracle folks. What’s even MORE astounding, the Columbus, Ohio Dispatch and the Cleveland, Ohio Plain Dealer, two of the largest newspapers in the state of Ohio also endorsed Romney. Will wonders never cease? Now, let’s see if any of their readers can actually read and understand.

Posted on October 27, 2012 at 10:07pmI was in a convenience store yesterday paying for some gasoline. I know the guy behind the counter that works there and we usually talk politics for a several minutes. I slide over and we talk in between customers that he’s waiting on. We were talking about Benghazi and this one guy yells out that Obama is the only choice! There was about a dozen people in the store and they all turned their attention towards the guy yelling at us.
I replied, rather loudly, “Who would you rather have in the White House.. a businessman or a community organizer?” With that said… the entire store broke out in applause. And I mean clapping and cheering included. And this was in Tampa, Fl.

I can tell you we only have one yard sign in the area for Barry and MANY for RR (including mine and the neighbor next door who has registered to vote for the first time in 20years) .. and I went by the local Obama headquarters the other day .. 2 cars out front .. so I went down to the RR and at least 15 cars were in the lot!

I was holding my Gary Johnson sign at a high traffic intersection, which i have been doing frequently the last couple weeks. A lady I seemed to recognize parked her car at the adjacent gas station and walked my way.
She seemed to be interested in my sign and immediately asked the following:
“I have been voting for 60 years. Are you telling me that I have been making a mistake this whole time”
I said to her:
“Ma’am i dont know who you voted for, but if you have been voting only republicans or democrats for 60 years, you have probably not been voting for the best candidate. We are in this situation because both parties take us to the same place”
She got really frustrated and just walked away. No clapping, no applause. Just one person waking up to reality
