Are You Prepared? Here Are the Five Things You Need to Survive a Natural Disaster

As the media reports on the projected impact of Hurricane Sandy– already being labeled by some as “the storm of the century”– it’s critical to remember what exactly your family needs to weather a natural disaster.

“The time for preparing and talking is about over,” Craig Fugate, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, warned.  It’s time to get ready.

Here are the five time-honored things you’d be foolish to neglect in preparing:

1) Food and Water:

Ready.gov recommends having at least a three-day supply of food and water on hand.  In specific terms, that means about one gallon of water, per person, per day.  Though people drink only half that on average, pregnant women, or people who are sick, often consume larger quantities.

Here Are the Five Things You Need to Survive a Natural Disaster | Sandy

2) Flashlight and Extra Batteries:

How many flashlights do you have in a cupboard or drawer somewhere, about half of which probably have batteries that no longer work?  If it truly is an emergency situation, there is a strong likelihood that the power will be out for an unknown period of time.  Don’t prepare halfway– stock up on a flashlight for everyone if you can, and make sure their batteries work.

3) First Aid Kit, Medication

Don’t rely on immediate outside help if something goes wrong.  In a worst case scenario, you should have the resources to tackle a number of first aid issues on your own, at least temporarily.  Similarly, just like you need food and water, you should also have enough prescription and other medication to ride out the storm.

4) Local Maps

In the age of Google and iPhones, many young adults don’t even own a physical map.  If your phone or computer can’t be charged, however, and you need to seek shelter elsewhere, you better know where you’re going.

5) Cash, Important Family Documents

Though most places accept credit cards these days, it’s always smart to have cash on hand.  Banks can close, and if the power’s out for an extended period of time, you’ll likely run into a cash-only situation.  Ready.gov also recommends you keep important family documents like insurance policies and bank records in a sealed, waterproof container out of harm’s way.

The Marketplace by TheBlaze, a collection of American small businesses who join together to offer discounted prices on the goods they produce, has a number of items that tackle emergency situations like Hurricane Sandy.  Since news of the massive storm hit, the 72-hour kit has been the #1 bestseller, the personal water filter at a close second.

Wherever you get your supplies, Hurricane Sandy serves as a reminder that natural disasters rarely give much notice, and it’s wise to at least have the basic necessities.

What other items do you think should be added to the list?

Check out Ready.gov for more on basic disaster preparation.

Sorry for the nonsensical order… Just some thoughts…
Depending on the winds, you’ll need duct tape for many things, but perhaps to secure windows from high winds. Lots of large trash bags, Many zip locks. An emergency radio usually has a solar and/or hand crank for power… These have led lights, weather bands and can usually charge a smart phone.Lots of long burning candles, double the batteries you than you’ll need, a multi vitamin, large cans of gas in the garage, fire-starters, plenty of packaged snack bars, make sure that all rechargable tools and devices are fully charged. Use a scanner feature on your smart phone to scan important docs and back it up on your laptop, then email it to yourself (securely). I have a few five gallon water jugs that are used in camping. Those are full. I’ve thought of dual_purposing them by filling them about 90% and setting them in the larger freezers. The water will have room to expand, stay safe, and give extra live to the contents of the freezer or (later) fridge. Oh, be sure to have a nice supply of charcoal, lighter fluid and tiki-torch fuel. Good luck to all!
Oh yeah… this is all Bush’s fault!

Some good ideas to consider there….Just be careful storing a large can of gasoline in your garage, or anywhere in your house for that matter. If you have a natural gas or propane water heater and/or furnace, the fumes from the gasoline could build up and come in contact with the pilot light. Also, if you accidentally spilled the gasoline, the same could happen. Use caution and try to find another safe place to store the gasoline.

I have been hoping a conservative group, possibly some vets outraged by what happened, might be able to put out infomercial like the swiftboat commercials and Kerry. The investigation might get lost if Noblama gets re-elected.

HAARP – High frequency active auroral research project.

    A Weather Machine.

It has been around for a while.

They are still conducting research and development.

The timing of this storm in relation to the elections and the magnitude of the storm, makes me question it’s origin.

It appears as though this is a HAARP experiment, that may actually bring about the crisis needed to impose the martial law that the globalists want.

Lets see how it plays out.

More than likely it is a natural weather anomoly, and won’t affect elections or cause looting and martial law.

I just like to keep an open mind, and I am a critical thinker who knows history.

Speaking of History, here is a History channel video clip that explains this weather machine.

absolutely. People that think the Government doesn’t play with the weather are lying to themselves. Weather it is HAARP or not who knows but It sure is timely for a losing regime that can’t afford to lose. After all the dream of an evil wrinkled old man to see the downfall of the United States, is at hand and this is his last chance to see it happen. He and his cronies will stop at nothing to see it happen. Now that I got all the conspiratorial stuff out of the way, I really believe it is God’s wrath being unleashed on a nation that is throwing Israel under the bus. I live in Missouri and with all the biblical prophecies coming to fruition I am fearful of a massive New Madrid Fault earthquake and when it goes big it will be mass devastation without warning.

You’ve got it right and wrong Probiemsolver. HAARP is being used, but it is not weather control, rather mind control. It induces paranoid delusions in those susceptible to the very low frequency radiation it emits. You’ll know when your thoughts are being manipulated by HAARP because you will start believing absurd pseudoscientific theories that are shrouded in scientific jargon- like anthropogenic global warming or assertions that HAARP can be used to manipulate tropospheric weather or cause earthquakes or do mind control.

Maybe I’m wrong in my thinking, but why do we need a generator? I don’t need to watch tv or use my computer. I have the essentials: one year of food for four people, 60 gals of kero for heat and cooking, 400 gals of water plus a katadyn pocket filter giving about another 15,000 gallons from the stream running by my house, and 15,000 rounds of ammo. Why do we put a generator so high on the list that just sucks fuel faster than my car can in a few days would be useless. Sorry I’m not stockpiling on gasoline just too dangerous.

Well, my generators can provide clean water for myself and my animals, hot water for me, and cold & frozen food, & cooked food, life would go on fairly normally for me for an awfully long time, my bulk tanks for diesel & gasoline for the farm here would support normal life for probably, a year, using generators for 2 hours or so a day. I know city folk would have a tough time with that, but my grocery stores and gas stations are 35 miles away. I suspect I would get to know all of my relatives, soon enough, in a crisis. I have plenty of food in the pantry, and I’m not even a hoarder, it’s just normal life out here in the boonies. I left the white collar life in 95, true country life can be tough, physically, and much more real, but there is great pleasure in, for example, a spaghetti dinner that comes from spaghetti squash, beef, tomatoes, and all the little things, that came from your own land. Most of it is healtier & tastes better, as well. Heat that comes from your own trees is sooo much cheaper, these days, as well. It does take an initial investment, though, setup into this way of life is not cheap, if you want to be comfortable.

My polling place is 4 1/2 miles away. Do you think that a little 9 mile walk was going to keep me from voting? No way! And people call those who prepare fools, conspiracy nuts, potential domestic terrorists or any number of names. The week before a disaster is too late to prepare.

Oh well, like I tell those I know, do not come knocking on my door during a natural or other disaster. I have asked you, I have informed you and I have warned you to prepare. Come looking to me during a disaster and you have failed to prepare for yourself and your family, either friend or foe, you will find you and your family looking down the barrel of something you will not find too pleasant. When TSHTF one had better be prepared.

To the editor of the Blaze, if you are going to advise people what to have during a disaster you had better provide people with a more in depth list. The list you have given might get people through a few days but it will not get them through a few weeks or more.

Let this be a warning to everyone who has not prepared for a natural or other disaster. Disasters can happen anywhere and to anyone. One does not get a few months warning to prepare. You are lucky to get a few days. Personally I do not want to end up in a FEMA camp looking to the government for handou

    Batteries (Power outage)
    Water (utilities cut)
    Simple, ready made foods
    First aid kit
    A change of clothes
    Wipes
    Sleeping bag
    Weapons & Ammo
In a sense…everything our men & women in the front line equip themselves on a regular basis. Makes you think twice about the luxuries we are spoiled with, thanks to their sacrifice. Stay safe out there.

sanitize (bleach) and fill bathtub with water to use for general use-cooking, flushing. Fill lined garbage cans or lined box containers with water.
Freeze large blocks of ice using lasagna trays and/or cake to line fridge or ice chests with the ice blocks.
Freeze gallon jugs and 2liter bottles filled with water (leave room for expansion) to help keep freezer cold in case of power outage. Should last up to 3 days.
Hunker down with a trusted group of folks to pool resources and brain power (God forbid) if needed.
Prayers to those of you in the path of the storm.

On the other hand if one doesn’t actually have anything to steal then one might not need ammunition. At the bare minimum someone should have a survival manual, and a little basic know how. for instance a sleeping bag can be made out of trash bags by combining two and stuffing it with leaves. Or to start a fire the best way is with two different types of wood, or have a magnesium block. Eat pine nuts, inner pine bark yields vitamin C, and other nutrients, water from vines. That is if someone doesn’t want to have to worry about or have time to pack a back pack.

Or here’s a good survival tip: know where you can find flint from the local geology. That’s always a good one, because you can use it for knapping, and also make sparks with it against steel.

I would replace #4 with a generator and gas. You can buy a small ‘tailgaters’ gen for around 1k. You’ll get about 10 hrs on a gal of gas and enough electricity to juggle all your 110v household products including your cell phone/computer which will give you access to Google Maps.

Also a carton of USA Gold Light in the box and a place to go to the bathroom that won’t promote unsanitary conditions.

Strega! Hopefully in a somewhat ventilated area ( your garage), a five gallon pickle bucket with a heavy duty trash bag and a toilet seat to put over the top will work! Add a little bleach and use a clothes pin for your nose when using! Standard TP will suffice! A good supply of stick matches is always a good idea!

Might want to stock toilet paper too. I noticed gold wasn’t on the list, and it isn’t on my list ever because gold will rise only so much, and then it only has down to go. And then what?

I look at it like this: I once heard that George Soros’s advice was to not sell things for less than you paid for it, or it’s value. When the value of gold starts going down, no one will want to touch it with a ten foot pole.

Considering the magnitude of this storm, a 3 day supply of food and water is NOT enough!

You will be in survival mode first and foremost— But you had better be L & L regardless of your state’s gun laws! There will be looting and you will have to protect yourself and family…

Magyar, no argument from me on this one. Hopefully folks that are looking at this list now (too late!) and survive will take the lessons to heart and prep for the next emergency of whatever type. I understand there may be another storm next tuesday or so.

If Sandy downgrades to a tropical storm, will there be Calypso music during the blizzard?

I always want to have a 44 oz. Mountain Dew on hand to keep me hydrated. I guess it is a good thing that I am not stuck in NYC waiting for Nanny Bloomberg to come and save me. It’s a storm for Pete’s sake! We get them too. Some come quickly with heavy winds (tornadoes) and some come slower and leave us without certain luxuries (ability to travel during a snowstorm). I am not suggesting people on the East Coast take this storm lightly, but for crying out loud the rest of the nation tires of your incessant whining every time a storm comes your way.
