Newt Gingrich Says Dems Need to ‘Get Over’ Mourdock’s Rape Remark: ‘He Said What Virtually Every Catholic’ in the Country Believes

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Democrats demanding Mitt Romney stand up more forcefully to Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock over his recent comment about rape and abortion need to “get over it.”

“If you listen to what Mourdock actually said, he said what virtually every Catholic and every fundamentalist in the country believes: Life begins at conception,” Gingrich said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”

The Tea Party-backed Republican candidate stepped into controversy last week when he said that if a woman is impregnated through rape, “it’s something God intended” and therefore abortion shouldn’t be allowed. Romney’s campaign said the presidential nominee disagreed with Mourdock’s stance but was not taking back his endorsement or the ad he recorded for him.

Democrats, including President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, have highlighted Romney’s refusal to completely disavow himself from Mourdock.

Gingrich on Sunday sought to turn the tables by painting Obama as the true “radical” on abortion, saying that as a state senator he “voted three times in favor of allowing doctors to kill babies in the eighth and ninth month who were born having survived late-term abortion.”

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos said that Mourdock’s comment implied that “as horrible as it may be,” the rape and resulting pregnancy were “something that God intended to happen — do you agree with that?”

“And he also immediately issued a clarification saying that he was referring to the act of conception and he condemned rape,” Gingrich said. “This is nonsense. Every candidate I know, every decent American I know condemns rape, OK? So why can’t people like [Obama campaign adviser] Stephanie Cutter get over it? We all condemn rape. Now let’s talk about whether we also condemn killing babies in the eighth and ninth month.”

As a former Catholic, I’m not entirely sure he’s correct about all Catholics thinking this way, but America has a democratic form of government, not a theocratical one. As such, most of us overwhelmingly agree with at least the rape exception in the abortion argument. Having a government force a raped woman to bear that child is……Sharia-like. We don’t want that.

GOURDY… given your statement, it’s not surprising that you fail to understand this position. You are right in that this is not a Theocracy, but as a practicing Catholics (who continue to educated ourselves in our Faith) we do base our voting decisions based on the morals and values derived from it. The life developing inside the mother is never to be condemned to death, even when the child is conceived by a vile act. It is an innocent life and that fact will never be able to be argued against in the Light of Truth, which is Jesus Christ. To kill any child is an act of murder. To kill a defenseless child within the womb is a mortal sin. Period.

If they have issues with what Mourdock stated, then they need to boycott NCIS. On Friday nights episode the same concept was stated. “Everything happens for a reason” “Some times good comes from hurt” Rape is horrible. but conceiving a child is not. Yes, it is the child of the person who did the rape, but it is also the child of the person being raped. Why should the crime be intensified by killing the child who is even more innocent?? Maybe it is a gift from God, like a rainbow after the storm.

@Gourdy Catholics that believe it is alright to kill a baby even though that child was conceived in rape should all be “former catholics.” A life is a life. You cannot claim life begins at conception except when that conception occured during a rape.

No, we certainly don’t want to force anyone not to be able to kill a child because you see it wasn’t the child’s fault but the child needs to pay the fine because the child doesn’t have a voice, so kill the child? Makes sense.

Ah yes the Gingrich selective hearing and selective morality. It is not the concern that Murdoch said for the 50th. time that life begins at conception. What he said was that if a women gets pregnant as a result of a rape, it was Gods will. Ok even a fifth grade biology student knows that pregnancy is a biological process whereby a fertilized egg meets a viable sperm. If so many of you believed that getting pregnant is purely a result of Gods will, you wouldn’t use any form of birth control other than praying.

      WOW!!
      @Jrook finally gets it!

We have a family of friends at church.
She was raped, early in life, and kept her child.
She felt it was not the child’s fault, and loved the child all the same.
(as if it mattered the ‘child’ is of mixed race)
She has a wonderful daughter of about 30 now, along with a husband whom accepted the child as his own as well.
They have their own biological chiildren as well, and are a great family.
Truely an example of God’s love.
The issue is not discussed until someone says something stupid, at which point, they’re “enlightened”.
So yes, it can be done. By the right person, and God’s blessings.

Maybe we should kill the rapist and let the baby live. Who was at fault during the rape?

If you believe that human life begins at conception, then how is it acceptable to kill that life because the mother went through a horrendous experience? Lots of people go through horrendous experiences. If you don’t believe that life begins at conception, then what’s the big deal about abortion? Maybe you could be convinced that a baby is not actually human because they can’t talk or even walk. Maybe you could be convinced that someone must get past the “age of reason” which might be 10 before you consider them human. People in Rome used to “expose” the children they didn’t want. Maybe you’d agree with that too. People in China kill their little girls now because they are not convenient. How about that?

Exceptions are a slippery slope and you should be careful about taking human life.

We have been instructed not to take the life of innocents. . Psalm 106: 38-48. Scientifically, we can detect a heartbeat easily at 6 weeks of pregnancy. If you stop that heart from beating, you have killed an innocent. Pray for healing and forgiveness. If you already had one, as many women have… Your child is waiting for you in heaven. God wipes us clean if we look to him. He will then heal our land.
One beautiful example of the unborn being in heaven is this… A young boy who had an after death experience came back telling his parents that he had 2 sisters. One here and one in heaven. He did not know that his mom had miscarried. He also saw his great grandfather who told him stories about the boy’s dad. When he told his mom and dad what he had been told, they knew that such specifics could only have come from divine intervention. The mom cried with happiness knowing that her other child was in heaven. We have to love and forgive like Christ showed us. And pray for those that have passed. Your prayers can help them be in a better place.

The underlying problem is that PP will call anything a rape for the sake of handing out abortions like holloween candy. They make a mockery of women at large. Other things PP is famous for is pressure to abort ($$$), It is not unheard of PP to blockade the man’s right to know, even when the Woman would want to have the child. It’s true. Time for a legitimate organization to stand where PP is taking up valuable space. The conflicts of interest are mind boggling..

There are over 51 million dead from abortions. That is 3,500 murdered babies every day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Hitler in his wildest dreams could not have achieved this level of efficiency, yet the pro-choicers and the MSM demonize this candidate for his statements. They say HIS stance is outrageous? What F’ing country is this? Is it such a stretch to imagine that death panels for the chronically ill and elderly are soon forthcoming? we are guilty of the mass murder of 3,500 infants per day. The fact that you people can love Paul Ryan and say he’s a “fiscal hawk”, yet he voted for both wars which were unfunded, voted for medicare part D, which was unfunded, voted for the bailout and took money from the stimulus, is downright hilarious.

You claim to hate progressives, but both Romney and Paul Ryan are progressives.

Admit it, you love progressives, you just love your own version of progressives. Just like you claim to hate big government, when in reality you just want your own version of big government.

You want a government so small, that it can monitor the pregnancy of every woman to get your desired outcome.

You value the sanctity of the doctor patient relationship, yet you’re fine with forcing doctors to do ******* probe ultrasounds even if it’s unnecessary.

The Republicans who have spent the last two years crying socialism, will get into power and then try to do the exact same thing…..just their form of it.

Supporters of this practice have the nerve to look us in the eye and ask for our votes. They should be begging for forgiveness, but they are brazen in their sins and ignore this suffering that takes place all around us. When will this country wake up and see where our policies are taking us? I believe in a patient, long suffering God, but how long will he allow this to go on? National heathcare is a population control grab. Obamas czar on sociology wants the world at 1 billion population. That means 6 million of you need to die. Obamas czar on socialogy wants birth to be preapproved, taxed per birth, and / or limited by approval. This includes compolsatory birth control after 1 or 2 children. One parents births are to be taken by the state and given to others. It’s all availabe to read if you are interested.
If you study national healthcare, this is really aka free birth control for society and all about population control. This has nothing to do with you living longer or having access to better healthcare.

My friend don’t let the shallow and ignorant doctrines of some protestant sects fool you. The best minds of humanity, the Catholic philosophers and theologians, have been dealing with these issues for centuries, here are their clear answers on this point:

      “Catechism of the Catholic Church”
“1037 God predestines no one to go to hell; for this, a willful turning away from God (a mortal sin) is necessary, and persistence in it until the end. In the Eucharistic liturgy and in the daily prayers of her faithful, the Church implores the mercy of God, who does not want “any to perish, but all to come to repentance”:

“Predestination is nothing else than the foreknowledge and foreordaining of those gracious gifts which make certain the salvation of all who are saved.”

I laugh at your bitterness, so much hate….no friends either ( not counting the imaginary ones on your nightly lovemaking to on line porn). Do you say this crap to make you feel tough? Like a man or to cover up your perverted mind? Bye bye phoney!

Dems are the wee little people, they bitch about little worthless things and ignore what is important. Old saying, “gag at a gnat and swallow a camel”, that would be a democrat.

Catholics are just as delusional as other religious wingnuts. God doesn’t “intend” anything, cause he’s imaginary. Get over it.

The God of Israel is very real Dave. Just because you can’t see something, it doesn’t mean it can’t be more real than this material existence. Quite real Dave. It looks like you are being called to Christ. Read the Bible. You will know true peace.

He might have said it a bit crudely, but in essence, a girl can get pg when raped, but I’m not sure that’s God’s will and think he just overshot the remark without thinking. No harm in my opinion.

This is less repulsive than our prez who voted time & again for infanticide, letting a full term baby, who lived in spite of the killing drugs, be put away (in closet, etc) to die on it’s own. A man who’s all in favor of keeping Abortion Clinics (so we Christians have to pay for such sinful acts) if the woman wants to get an abortion and had no problems with it spiritually, let her pay for herself, not us.

This obama has been proven to be incompetent, is wrecking our Country, is ideological, arrogant and
(move over Carter) one of the worst presidents in our history, a totally narcissistic man.
His leadership is amateurish, he hasn’t learned from his horrid mistakes and wants to repeat them.
BTW: read Ed Kleins book, “The Amateur” explaining what his friends really think of him

less then 1% of the CATHOLIC FAITH WORLD WIDE has been involved in, accused of or guilty of anything to do with kids like you’ve said. The other 99+% have served humanity and GOD. For you to make a comment like this is a window to your soul. I’m sorry for you.

It’s not only the child rape, but also the active hiding and relocation of these rapists by the Vatican hierarchy to evade justice that is also a problem. Also, wher are you getting these 1% figures?

It’s not about how many of the sick perverts participated, it’s how the entire CATHOLIC FAITH WORLD WIDE organization at the highest levels cover upped, and let the pedophiles continue to prey on the innocent, with out so much as a slap on the hand.

If you feel that 10,000 reported cases aren’t worth making a comment on, what does that say about your soul. How many trade offs on your morality do you people go through a day, so you can look at particular organization with your rose colored glasses?.

You have eaten the anti-christian liberal propaganda spewed by the liberal media, which has an scapegoat: The Catholic Church. While abuses are committed in all the institutions that work with minors, the Catholic institutions have the lowest rate of them. This is a fact.

It’s also a fact that the God of the Catholic Church is a reality at least for the millions of individuals who survive thanks to the support of the Church.Thousands of hospitals, schools, etc. across the world. From the poorest nations in Africa to the best universities in America and Asia.
Millions of poor children are educated and feed by The Church.

Hatetheist – I’ll bet you support public schools yet they have higher percentages of child molestation incidents than the Catholic Church.

What does it matter what a bunch of sick hatetheists like you think anyway (the problem is that hatetheists like you can’t think in the first place)?
