Romney Sweeps Endorsements of Iowa’s Largest Newspapers– Read Their Blistering Critiques Of The President Here

There appears to be immense “lost faith” between six major Iowa newspapers and President Obama in the final days before the 2012 election.  On Sunday The Des Moines Register, Cedar Rapids Gazette, and Quad City Times and the Sioux City Journal all endorsed the Republican candidate.  In 2008, Romney was endorsed only by The Fort Dodge Messenger and Omaha World Herald.  The final tally means Romney has now secured an unprecedented sweep of endorsements from the six largest papers in the crucial swing-state.

The accomplishment is unprecedented for many reasons.  For one, it’s the first time all the papers have collectively endorsed the same candidate in over 70 years. Four years ago, candidate Obama received warm endorsements from three of the newspapers, and Romney is the first Republican to be endorsed by the Register in 40 years.

So why the change of heart from the editorial boards of the widely-read papers? Each endorsement features blunt, revealing and at times brutal critiques of the president and his job performance.  Though the critiques of the president vary, each endorsement mentions a stagnant, limping economy as the decisive issue that pushes them to back Romney.

Shawn McCoy, Iowa Communications Director for the Romney campaign, noted in a press release that “President Obama won Iowa by nearly 10 points in 2008,” but hints that that support has eroded immensely over the last four years of “misguided policies and broken promises.”

Some of the sharpest critiques from the papers speak to that eroded support and overall loss of faith in President Obama:

“ The economy is growing at an unacceptably anemic rate”

–The Des Moines Register

“Voters this year must decide if they are or are not satisfied with and confident about the direction in which America is moving. We are neither satisfied nor confident. In our view, change is needed.”

–Sioux City Journal

“The ever-changing account of how his administration has responded to and explained — or hasn’t — the assassination of a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Libya is raising troublesome doubts about the chain of command and whether there’s been a cover-up.”

–The Cedar Rapids Gazette

“The president laments congressional gridlock that fomented under the inflammatory leadership of Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Harry Reid. The president’s deference to their reckless rhetoric further deepened congressional divide. Obama doesn’t deserve all of the blame. But he merits little credit for any meaningful attempt to bridge the gap.”

Quad-City Times

“And puzzling to us was why the president didn’t carry the flag for his bipartisan Simpson-Bowles panel, which recommended a necessary combination of spending cuts and revenue increases to seriously launch our way out of the deficit quagmire.”

–The Cedar Rapids Gazette

“Of the last 11 recoveries from recession, the Obama recovery is the worst. The average retail price of gas has risen by nearly $2 per gallon.  Median household income is down more than 8 percent.”

–Sioux City Journal

“Some Romney critics say he’s “anti-women” and doesn’t care enough about the poor or making sure there’s an adequate safety net for those hit by tragedy or severe circumstances. We believe most of those fears are overblown or misrepresented.”

–The Cedar Rapids Gazette

“No need to rely on hope. His record includes evidence of change…We endorse a proven manager who won’t need on-the-job training.”

Quad-City Times

“Because we wish to see the country chart a new course to economic vitality and fiscal sanity, the Journal endorses former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney to be the next president of the United States.”

–Sioux City Journal

“We invested heavily in hope back in 2008.  Our 2012 endorsement of Mitt Romney comes with an imperative for change.”

–Quad-City Times

“Barack Obama rocketed to the presidency from relative obscurity with a theme of hope and change. A different reality has marked his presidency. His record on the economy the past four years does not suggest he would lead in the direction the nation must go in the next four years.”

–The Des Moines Register

As it looks like Romney has this election in the bag, I would just like to say I hope he is a great president.

I have one worry, that he will continue to run up the debt and Republicans will once again go silent on the matter, TheBlaze do you think that this is going to happen or what do you have planned if he does continue the spending spree?

How will you keep his feet to the fire, will you vote him out in 2016 or will you say the other guy is worse so I am giving him another chance?

This idea of holding ones feet to the fire sounds great but you can’t really execute it in a 2 party system. I am just curious to see if the Tea party and Republicans will speak out like they did against Obama if he raises the debt ceiling again.

But can anyone give me specifics on how they will hold him accountable should he go off course and lets say raise the debt ceiling?

I don’t think you have anything to worry about with Mitt. He is a tightwad, it is in his DNA, he prides himself in saving money. Just listen to his family about some of his saving habits, like turning off the hot water heater when they leave the house to save energy. All you have to do is look at his record, he is not a big spender. He balances budgets.
He comes from great stock. As a Michigander, I watched his dad and he was a great governor as well as president of American Motors. Mitt learned from one of the best. So please don’t worry.
This may come as a shock and I have said it before, but I think Mitt will be a better president than
Reagan. Mark these words and watch.

jillmyron as I have said I do hope Romney is a great president, but may I ask lets say hypothetically speaking after he is inaugurated the debt ceiling debate comes up again and he decides to raise it, will you be outraged and demonstrate against it like you did with Obama or will you passively accept it?

Having taken a look at both his and Ryan’s plan they have some things I like and some I don’t but one of the big problems I have is the fact that they have to raise the debt ceiling once again, I am just wondering if I go back to worrying about this and the tea party/Republicans stay the course and start protesting this and fighting back against this or do they just sit down and say it is ok because my guy did it?

As far as I am concerned, a Romney victory is not the end. It is merely the beginning. As a Republican who has at time embraced progressive policies, we will have to be even more vigilant with Romney as president than we were with Obama and make sure that we hold his feet to the fire.

I frankly do not care what anyone says, reality is: the Debt Ceiling will have to go up. The problem will be if it is raised more than once and does not come down in the next 4 years. Not only do you hold the President’s feet to the fire, you hold EVERY office holder from the TOP on down to the same standard. If Romney is Voted President, and he does NOT produce a change for the better, I will work to get rid of him, AND everyone else who does not work to IMPROVE the UNITED STATES. Not only do We The People need to hold office holders to account, we need to hold News Sources to account, REPORT the News Quit trying to MAKE the news. I hear you, but be patient. He won’t raise the debt ceiling unless he absolutely has to because of Obama’s previous commitments. We still have to pay our bills whether we like it or not. It will take some time to undo every crazy thing Obama has gotten us into, but I guarantee Romney will fix it and he will do it as fast as possible. He will cut and cut where he can. For what it’s worth here is a reasonable article on what he did with the Olympics. He immediately cut the unnecessary. Have faith.

Vunks, The pen is mightier than the sword. I believe that Mr. Romney is a honorable man that will listen to our representatives and WE the PEOPLE when we make our voices heard, unlike the current resident of the White House. One of the many differences between Romney and Obama is one cares about the people and the other doesn’t. One will take the input into consideration and the other thinks he has all the answers and doesn’t need nor want the input. One believes and trusts in God and the other doesn’t know what he believes in.

I would like to first thank the two who answered my question by essentially saying they will give Romney a free pass on the debt ceiling. This is what I was afraid of it seems by this time next year the Republicans will be back to doing there old thing and we will just continue this cycle of more debt.

I am still awaiting his full plan, as I would love to see how you lower taxes increase military spending and balance the budget, tho he himself said the budget won’t be balanced for 8-10 years.

So once again I ask how are you going to hold his feet to the fire, what mechanism do you have in place to stop him from just continuing spending. In 2016 if he hasn’t will you vote democrat? I am really confused on how “WE THE PEOPLE” can really tell him what to do once he gets into office.

I think Romney is a good man, anyone who gives almost 4 million to charity certainly is, but I do find it strange that after the way we attacked Obama for increasing the debt ceiling some are willing to let Romney get away with it without a peep.

      Agree with others here….
      Romney’s record isn’t all bad.
He vetoed like 800 times in Taxachusettes. I’m sure a lot of that was spending bills. He didn’t even run for re-election because he knew he had pissed off the Commies so bad.

Sorry you threw your vote to Zer0.

If debt is your concern, you would not have tossed your vote away to make some ‘grander’ point about a 3rd party. You are mixing peas & carrots. You know Zer0 will increase the debt by $1+T each of the next 4 years – leaving office in 2016 with a debt total of $23-T. If digging out of $16.5-T debt is difficult, try $23-T!

Eliminate the immediate threat first – Zer0. Then take care of the small stuff – electing Johnson.

No one can just slam on the spending brakes. Obligations must be met. Spending must slow in a controlled manner. The debt ceiling may need to go up again due to current commitments, but it will be based against budgets. Zer0 has never had budgets. Duh!

Romney will. Zer0 will not. Johnson will never have the opportunity.

      There are 3 choices.
A vote for Romney will give us a fighting chance.
A vote for Zer0 will give us no chance.
A vote for Johnson will give us no chance because he is unelectable in 2012.
However, what a vote for Johnson does do is diminish the odds by a bit that Romney will defeat Zer0, thus assuring that there will be no budgets and $6-T in new debt when Zer0 leaves office in 2016. Zer0 will have succeeded at his goal of bankrupting America and indenturing 300 million citizens and their children to the tune of $23-T.

Romney loses. Johnson loses. We lose. Zer0 wins (not sure what).

Thanks for voting your moral conscience though.

Yes, Romney’s feet will be held to the fire. That is a part of what the TEA Party is about (Taxed Enough Already). We take out Liberal Dems, RINOs, and liars of both parties. Have a pretty successful track record for a young upstart party, I might add. We strike fear in the hearts of the corrupt. You won’t hear that on the MSM! All you will hear about is OWS.

If Romney does not do as he states that he will, we will look for another, a BETTER candidate to replace him – and I think Governor Romney is aware of that consequence. We are fed up with the way Washington is run. If Romney fails us, in 2016, there will be a need for a candidate for the TEA Party to support.

We want about the same thing as you do – honest and responsible politicians. We think Romney is the man in 2012.

Is Johnson the man? Don’t know enough about him. In 2016, he may well be the choice for the TEA Party. I am sure he (and you) would be happy to have a loyal, hardworking crowd the size of the TEA Party in his corner. But in 2012, Johnson is not the man. In 2012, he is a distraction to fiscal responsibility and progress. Hey, he got your vote – and by doing so, about half of it went to Zer0.

See how that “Voting For Johnson Is Like Voting For Zer0 In A Roundabout Way” thing works?

Thanks for voting your moral conscience, though. Same goes to all you Paul-bots.

It is heart warming to hear how Iowans have awakened and realized what buffoons this administration is ! I can only hope the rest of our country and my own state of Florida will do the same. The Miami Herald came out in support of Doofus and the village idiot…no surprise there.

There will be another false flag event before the election to be sure. They have already lost and now the only means they have to remain in power is to steal it from us Americans. We’ll see.
      We’ll see.

That’s one great photo and ROMNEY is every bit the man/President that it depicts. I’m heartened that big names and institutions are NOT just falling in line behind this COMMIE TRAITOR in the WH. THAT Axelrod and Ploueffe and Jarret, Sunstein, Jarrett can’t bully these editors.

One of Obama’s talking heads, that pseudo Senator from VA (dude, you’d never have been there without your daddy being there first – he was okay – you got nothing) who said: That means Romney will get the Editor’s vote, but nothing more. Yeah, Right.

I think the final straw was this creeps lying about Benghazi, and a SEAL’S FATHER saying he was like a DEAD FISH to shake hands with and wouldn’t look him in the eye.

This has to be a landslide against OBAMA to stop the cheating that is already going on. PRAY HARD.

Dear Leader will not approve. It all comes down to how many phony votes can be made and counted by his Stalinist useful idiots at this point.

Glad to hear this. If it were not for the compliant MSM, Barack Obama would never have been elected, un-vetted, to the White House. They deserve total banishment and castigation for their lack of journalistic responsibility. Lower than a congressman or a used car salesman. Disgusting bunch .

“You want the media telling people how to vote?”….

      Actually, yes.
Newspapers in the U.S. have been endorsing candidates of their choice since…
since… well since Franklin wrote letters to the editor via a pseudonym…
      and before….
I think Newspapers having the FREEDOM to be partisan is a GOOD thing…..

@East, I’m sick of the media supporting this two party charade that we actually have a choice. I mean so what if they’re supporting Romney? Romney supports Obama’s policies, so they’re still supporting a socialist/fascist. It’s quite telling that they are still supporting the status quo. You know nothing is going to change.

DZ: Wish the media would stop the Charade that Obama is even interested in improving our capitalist economy. Think he is much more interested in ” fundamentally changing ” our capitalist system into that ” redistribution” ( wink, wink ) one he mentioned to Joe the plumber .

      JUST….

“You know nothing is going to change”

Not true. Thing are already changing.

Most people have become philosophically Libertarian….. but most don’t know it yet,,,
Look at all these “gotcha” man-on -the-street videos…

All these politically ignorant people just default to defense of Liberty and make assumptions about policy because they are buying the spam that says THEIR guy is the one who will give them the MOST FREEDOM….
Freedom is what everyone craves even if they can’t follow the breadcrumbs…
