Portman Demands Answers on Benghazi Scandal, Denounces ‘Unbelievable’ White House Reaction

With the story of the run-up and aftermath of the Benghazi assault becoming ever more murky and questions continuing to pile up over the Obama administration’s handling of those attacks, “Fox News Sunday” offered a study in contrasts between the two parties’ approach to the issue.

On the one hand, Sen. Mike Udall (D-Colo.) hedged repeatedly, complained about the issue of being politicized and refused to answer a question on whether the drones flying over Benghazi had been armed.

In contrast, Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), known in press circles as the man who toughened up Mitt Romney in debate prep, gave a good showing of precisely why Romney was relieved to only be debating the president instead of Portman himself. Addressing Udall personally, Portman launched into an urgent litany of reasons why the administration’s story desperately required clarification, and not for political reasons at all.

Specifically, Portman took aim at the administration over recent revelations that the White House might have known about the danger to American assets in Benghazi, and might have decided — in spite of that — not to send reinforcements or protect those assets any further. He combined this with previous revelations suggesting that the administration had ignored requests for more security in the run-up to Benghazi to paint a brutal picture of incompetence on the part of the executive branch.

“There was a shocking breakdown operationally not having the security there in the first place. And not to respond to these guys and their pleas for help for seven hours during a firefight, it’s unbelievable,” Portman said. “And, now we’re hearing that the president of the United States, based on his own words, issued a directive immediately after he found out about the firefight saying he wanted to be sure the people on the ground were safe and they were getting what they needed. It didn’t happen. This means that either the president’s order was not followed. Which would be a breakdown in terms of the White House procedure or it means the order wasn’t issued. We need to find out about this. It’s not about politics.”

Portman later observed, increduously, “This makes no sense.”

Coming from the generally mild-mannered Portman, this emphatic demand for information must have sounded more than a little chilling to supporters of the administration. And certainly, Portman had his reasons for incredulity and urgency. As Jennifer Rubin at the Washington Post asks:

Meanwhile, the father of slain SEAL Tyrone Woods is furious with the administration, demanding to know why his son wasn’t saved when “apparently even the State Department had a live stream and was aware of their calls for help. My son wasn’t even there. He was at a safe house about a mile away. He got the distress call; he heard them crying for help; that’s why he and Glen risked their lives to go that extra mile just to take care of the situation. And I’m sure that wasn’t the only one received that distress call — you know, ‘Come save our lives.’”

Did Defense Secretary Leon Panetta take it upon himself to call off any rescue effort? (He told the press on Thursday that the Pentagon lacked clear information as to what was going on.) Where was the president and did he or some other official take it upon himself to deny help to the trapped Americans?

With an old legislative hand like Portman now sounding like a fire breathing Tea Partier in his demands for information, one wonders whether the administration will feel a bit more heat in the last nine days before the election.

  In this case, how can any Democrat who considers him/herself a citizen of the US look in the mirror and accept the bilge, tripe, and dross the WH and sycophants have been tossing out for weeks to cover their naked a**es when the admin. allowed an AMBASSADOR to be captured, tortured, and murdered on AMERICAN soil?

  The intelligence community reports to the President. The president has the final say and judgement. Obama is incompetent to be president. Scratch that, this POS KNEW what he was doing.   Can we please start calling this the “Benghazi Abandonment?” Already, some media outlets are referring to it as Benghazi-gate or the Benghazi incident and I believe these minimize the nature of the incident. ‘Time to call it what it really is.
  
  It’s a little “fishy” that Obama has relieved the two top military men from the immediate area of Benghazi of their commands. Gen. Carter Ham, AFRICOM, was relieved of duty on the night of the Benghazi Abandonment. Several sources say that Ham was relieved for arguing with Obama and Panetta on the viability of sending in a rescue team to save the Seals requesting help by radio. Ham was for it, but was also told to “stand down.” Word is, that Gen. Ham is talking to Congressional investigators.
  
  And then, just this past weekend, Rear Admiral Charles Gaouette was relieved of command of the Carrier Task Force in the Benghazi area. Note: The U. S. Navy rarely relieves a task force commander in the middle of deployment. Adm. Gaouette was also in the chain of command to have heard the Benghazi call for help and to have possibly insisted that the former Seals be rescued. The official word is that Adm. Gaouette was relieved for “inappropriate leadership judgement…” (a term that sounds suspiciously like “disagreed with the Emperor.”)

  You are so right. You notice Obummer lost no time in mugging the tv cameras about Hurricane Sandy but yet has made no tv appearance regarding Bengazi Abandonment. He and his staff only appeared to repeat the “video lie” time and time again. It is sad that good people had to lose their lives trying to save their countrymen and the America ruled by POTUS.

Post them together and then separately and have your friends and family do the same. You can do the same for your local NBC, CBS, etc Facebook pages.   TEA I am hopeful that we do not need this but If Obama wins we are in trouble. We are probably in trouble if he loses. We must win and hold the RINOS in check. Either way we must start a new political party, TEA party, now.
  Instead of the TEAS joining the GOP, next election it needs to be the GOP joins the TEA. I can’t tell who or what is in charge and I trust no one.
  Please write some ideas of how to do this. I don’t use social media…Is that the way? I am a ham (radio) operator… Is that the way? I belong to the local 9/12 group…Is that the way.
  I refuse to donate to anything until it is vetted.

If Obama ordered that the men be protected at Benghazi, lets see the written order because all the military people are saying that there would be one.

  The article makes sense but I’d like a little proof that it was Iranian forces who did this before believing it. Reguardless Obama sat and watched as our men died and did nothing. Even if it was Iranian forces you dont stand there and do nothing. You protect your men PERIOD. I dont want to hear that it COULD have become a black hawk down situation. Thats like me saying I better never go outside because I COULD get hit by a bus. The bottom line is that our men were attacked and the President sat there, did NOTHING, listened to their pleas for backup, continued to do NOTHING, watched them die and then LIED ABOUT IT ALL. If Senator Rob Portman is an example of the kind of man Ohioans are sending to Washington DC these days, then I feel more confident than ever about Romney’s election chances and, therefore, the future of our once-great nation.

Great job electing this guy, Ohio. Portman is pretty awesome, from what I gather here. If he votes like he thinks, then we need more like him in DC.

Sen. Mike Udall says he is on the intelligence committee?? He doesn’t sound like he’s very intelligent. In fact, he sounds like he is completely in the dark about this. The terror attack was over a month ago, he should have some answers by now. If not, he should be fuming. Didn’t look that way to me.

When the election is over, I hope we can get a full accounting of this. At the least, the level of incompetence displayed is dismaying. At the worst, this story is hiding criminal activity. If it was not possible to get help there, admit it, and explain why, and more importantly, satisfy us that actions are being taken to avoid a repeat. If it was possible to help why was help not given? Who and where did the failures occur? And why has the administration been stonewalling? That goes back to why the ambassador was there, of course, and therein lies the possible criminal activities. Give us the truth.

  ANYTIME a consulate is attacked the PRESIDENT IS NOTIFIED IMMEDIATELY. It has been verified that the President was in the situation room watching the attack in real time. The President heard their calls for help. No help was sent. They died. The ONLY PERSON WHO COULD HAVE GIVEN THE ORDER TO DO NOTHING WAS THE PRESIDENT. NOBODY ELSE HAS THAT AUTHORITY.
