U.S. Military Chief Arrives in Israel to Oversee ‘Largest-Ever’ Joint Military Exercises

(TheBlaze/AP) — The American military chief has arrived in Israel to observe the largest-ever armed forces drill between the two countries, the Associated Press reports.

Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, was meeting Sunday with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak at the beginning of his visit, and will be meeting with his Israeli counterpart and the country’s president before he leaves.

Dempsey plans to oversee elements of Austere Challenge 2012, an air defense drill that includes more than 3,500 Americans and 1,000 Israelis.  They are practicing their ability to work together against a range of threats facing Israel.

Significantly, the joint exercise tests multiple Israeli and American air defense systems against incoming missiles and rockets from places as far away as Iran, which is one of Israel’s gravest threats at the moment.

“The security relationship between the US and Israel is deeper and stronger than it has been in recent years,” Ehud Barak remarked after his meeting with Dempsey.

The Times of Israel notes, however, that Dempsey has spoken out against a unilateral Israeli strike on Iran.  Back in August, the U.K. Guardian quoted the man as saying such a strike would “delay but probably not destroy Iran’s nuclear program,” and that he doesn’t want to be “complicit” in such a strike.

However, when news of the exercise was first announced, many speculated the drills were either directly or indirectly designed to “send a message” to the Iranians, and possibly prepare for an actual attack.

Either way, 26-year-old Sgt. Gary Sabby, an American who went to Israel for the drills, concluded that “If something ever did happen, we could come together.”  23-year-old specialist Brandon Maroney agreed, adding: “This joint exercise validated that we can work together.”

    I would say this is all another ploy to make us think the anointed one really does put Israel ahead of his muslim brotherhood when we know otherwise. Our military men and women serving under these people in charge and this admin need to watch each others’ back. We all know how our Ambassador and three American heroes were taken care of by their superiors in Benghazi!

      Israel knows this, too. Clearly an election move to sucker American Jews into voting for Dear Leader by his promising that he has their back. If he gets the win, then then the only “back” thing that will happen is that our Muslim President will put a knife in Israel’s back or do nothing while the M Brotherhood nations do.       hear ya ….I again have to make a point on something relating to this Benghazi cover up ….Everyone should Stop and think ….Our top brass to cover for Obama made the statement…We didn’t move personal because we weren’t 100% sure they would not be put into harms way. ..I hope everyone realizes that makeing that statement basically tells the enemy our rapid deployment delta forces are useless …Unless we are 100% certain they will not be in harms way. So not only did four brave Americans loose their life…The enemy now knows from where and how long before a reaction takes place . Now stop and think…What happen the other day…We get a new video from their at the moment number one…Wanting kidnappings…So now we know whatever they have coming next is going to be a very fast moveing event. That they will feel the situation will be in their control. See this is what happens in war which we are in against Islam …And don’t let your people on the ground make the call… Notice how Obama is replacing the Admiral in charge..Why because I believe the guy has had it and was just about ready to finally untie our hands from behind our back….and send these Flinstones a message they wern’t going to forget..

      @THEVOICE — I agree with your comments entirely. Listening to Rush today, he described how the one of the victims had painted a target on the attackers, and that he would have only done that knowing there were strikers approaching to hit the target. This man was a hero placing his life on the line in painting the target…which also lets the enemy know his position. My heart just breaks knowing that this could have turned out very differently if we didn’t have a lying POS in the oval office. I pray justice will be served on him and everyone involved in the murders of our Ambassador and 3 American heroes.

    So they are actually conducting the exercise! I believe one was abruptly canceled a few months ago, when there was speculation that Israel would unilaterally attack Iran. This was in the period leading up to when Obama snubbed Bibbi.

      I disagree. I was one of those that believed war in the Middle East was imminent. The Obama administration’s ambivalence and vacillation was, in my opinion, seriously contributing to the likelihood of war.

      I believe that Mr Romney’s clear statement of support for Israel, should he win, gave the protagonists pause. Now the fact that there is a serious joint exercise about to begin, whatever the motivation, has caused the prospect of war to recede further.

      It is not as satisfying as pounding the Islamists into the ground, I agree, but it is much better for the world generally, and the allied armed forces in particular. It doesn’t do the exchequer any harm, either.

      Problem solved? Not yet. Not by a long way. But it is much better than the techniques employed by the Obama administration…

      Petraeus will say what Hussein tells him to say. If you all recall, he fainted when he was called to testify before the Senate Armed Services Committee about two years ago. That was the first time he was forced to lie for Hussein. Imagine, you’re under the command of an American patriot like Bush, and all of a sudden you find yourself having to take orders from a POS dictator like Hussein.

      During the primaries I was all for Ron Paul but he was not in it to win. Ron Paul was only in it to build the base for the Republicon Party but the Republicon Party screwed him every step of the way beginning in Iowa where Ron Paul would of won the primary if Iowa would of counted all the votes.
