‘Underwater Dogs’ — Diving Dogs Make Scary (And Wonderful) Faces
The dogs seen here are not terrified or terrifying…they just look that way. In fact, they are having a great time.

Photographer Seth Casteel is known to many as “the underwater dog guy.” He’s a gifted lensman with a passion for our canine companions. His just-released photo book “Underwater Dogs” features the pictures seen here and more.

When he is not taking pictures of animals for his photo portrait business (Little Friends Photo), Casteel volunteers at local shelters, using his talents to help save dogs and cats. For the past four years, he’s worked with SecondChancePhotos.org taking pictures of the dogs and cats waiting for adoption and training the staff at many animal shelters to do the same.

As you can see, the right photograph can make all the difference in getting a dog or cat adopted. Casteel’s work has been credited with finding “forever homes” for countless animals.

Posted on October 29, 2012 at 6:09amWe had to put our German Shepard down last Monday,(10-22-12). Now God has a good companion to run and play with through the Heavens. I’ll see Shadow again some day and will run with him once again to chase Rabbits and Squirrels. But this time it will be to play with and not try to catch and eat. He never was fast enough to catch them but maybe this time Shadow, Rocky and Bugs will all have fun.

Posted on October 28, 2012 at 4:21pmDuring my lifetime, I have had
2 gerbils
2 hamsters
3 guinea pigs
numerous fish
2 dogs
3 cats
1 parakeet
Many would die of natural causes, but a few, such as the cats and dogs, had to be put down, usually due to old age.
I always took good care of them, and they, in their own way, gave me alot of comfort and joy back (yes, even fish!).
I cannot think of a better thing to give a child than a pet. Granted, there are some guidelines that must be followed, concerning the pet chosen vs. the age of the child, but I can remember have “bad days” at school and coming home and going straight to the back yard where Honey was. She was an American Mutt, and she was a white/golden tan (honey colored) fur. For 12 years, she was my closest confidant, and she helped me through rough times. Just typing this up is almost bringing a tear to my ear, and she has been gone now for almost 30 years.
Pets give so much and ask for so little. And each pet I had had their own character; each was unique.
So, please, don’t go to a licensed dog breeder when there are so many animals at your local shelter in dire need of a home. Save a life and adopt. Your local shelter has all kinds of animals that are looking for someone to love them.

Posted on October 28, 2012 at 2:23pmI’m going to throw this out there, in case just one person reads it and it makes a difference. In April, I lost my best friend – my truest companion who helped me through the loss of two (unborn) kids, two wives, and my father, over almost 14 years. He was a dog, and he was “the best”.
I got right back on the wagon and adopted two dogs from a Denver rescue. They were older, but they are incredible, and the peace they bring me by letting me provide a good home for them is, well, difficult to put into words. Its value is priceless.
I was really worried about “replacing” my dog, but I learned very quickly that my new rescues weren’t replacing my boy’s spot in my heart; they were merely accompanying it.
What you give a dog, a dog will return to you one thousand fold. If you’re thinking of rescuing/adopting, know that the pros far outweigh the cons. Sure, you’ll make some sacrifice, but it’s well worth it.
My girls rescued me, and I love them for it.

I know what you mean about these being best friends. I am sorry for all the losses you have had and I am happy to know that you gain happiness and strength from your dogs. My husband and I have had many dogs and when each one has died it has always been a terrible loss. We keep saying we don’t know how many more deaths we can go through and then each time realize that we just cannot live without these wonderful creatures. No matter what. No matter how much pain we feel with their passing. I love all dogs of all ages but have developed a passion for older dogs. They are so wonderful and there just aren’t enough people to adopt these diamonds in the ruff (excuse my pun). We do what we can. These dogs need to live out the remainder of their lives in peace and happiness.
I pray that one day we will not need shelters anymore. Kudos to all who adopt. It is one of the most gratifying experiences you could ever have.

Posted on October 28, 2012 at 3:50pmMy wife and I always adopt ‘saved’ puppy mill dogs, and don’t have one ounce of regret. My little girl “Scarlett” is a saved pure Peik that is blind due to her eyes didn’t develop as a pup. The place we got her from explained their operative who saves (buys) dogs from illegal Mill Auctions (undercover) had purchased the amount he had, but turned and saved Scarlett with his own money – because she was in a tiny cage with a sign STAPLED TO HER FUR that stated “Good Breeder”. During the auction she was pulled out by her scruff (terrified) and told that she had four litters “so far”. She has been the BEST pup we have ever had, and she runs around (knows) our house better than we can! She has perfect pure Peik markings but we tossed the papers, got her fixed, and she has never had to be scared since she was rescued : )
Our latest save “Lord Dashwood” is a pure Chin that when a tiny pup locked in stacked cages had his legs partially chewed off by what the rescue Vet. thinks was rats. He is a perfect pup that can run just as fast as our two other Chin’s, and can catch and ‘roll’ them! SAVE PUPPY MILL DOGS! YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT!!

Posted on October 28, 2012 at 4:24pmYou brought a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat. I’m glad your “girls” have rescued you — funny how that works, isn’t it? As I write this, my rescuer (we rescue them by adopting them — they rescue us every day with their companionship) is laying next to me, giving me quizzical looks because he wants to go out and play and investigate the fun smells in the rain and I’m just not real excited about it — grin!
I was prompted to respond to you because of what you wrote about “replacing” a dog. It’s true that no “new-to-you” dog “replaces” your old love, that they accompany it. I’ve always believed that getting another dog is a way of honoring the memory of the previous one. Because the previous dog made such a positive impact on your life, you’re willing to do it again with your eyes wide open to all the challenges, joy, love and ultimate grief. It’s an amazing and wonderful thing and I think I’ll take my rescuer out to play in the rain now — grin! God bless!

Posted on October 28, 2012 at 5:52pmThanks for your comments, folks. Really appreciated.
I got my first rescue in June, Elsa – a pure-bred Malinois who was used as breed stock in a puppy mill. After 4 or 5 litters, she developed breast cancer and was dumped at a kill shelter. Thanks to the great folks at White German Shepherd Rescue, she’s LITERALLY living “on a farm and playing with animals”. (no, folks, that’s not a euphemism!) I have a ranch in WY and she gets to lead a 100% off-leash life out here. AND, she’s cancer free at the current time, too!)
My Number Two is Minna – a cattle dog cross who LOVES heeling my guests, and barking at strange cows and stranger people. She was adopted three times before, but returned each time. I was told that it might take two to three weeks of hand-feeding her to get her to settle, but all it took was opening my heart for her to see, some gentle words for a couple hours, and the real magic – POT ROAST! In two hours, she was my “best bud” and has many characteristics of my old Charlis-dog. Since that night in early August, she hasn’t let my side.
Blessings to all the animal lovers out there. Life with pups really is wonderful. I’m off to buy Casteel’s book.

We lost one of our two dogs two years ago and now have one older, but still relatively frisky dude left. I am at odds with my better half over whether to replace him immediately with another pup (perhaps smaller and less prone to shed) when he does go to heaven (as dogs definitely do). I have had a dog my entire life, even when I was in the military and it was not necessarily convenient to have such a “dependent”. I think I may have to chose over a dog and my better half. No, just kidding but it’s a serious discussion that we have often, and we both feel very strongly about our sides.

Saying that barry wants us to go to the dogs is less gutter-ish than saying barry wants us to go to he**, and about the same thing.
Saying that barry’s father is unknown is referencing the book and film “Dreams from My Real Father”, have you read the book or watched the movie?
