Below, read the Associated Press’ analysis regarding how the 2012 presidential campaign is shaping up. Currently, the outlet claims that President Barack Obama has the upper-hand (in terms of electoral college votes).
(AP) — A look at the race between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney for the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House. Obama is within reach, although North Carolina, which the Democrat carried in 2008, has begun leaning toward Romney, according to an Associated Press analysis.
The analysis isn’t intended to predict the outcome of the Nov. 6 election. Rather, it’s meant to provide a snapshot of a race that has been stubbornly close in the small number of most competitive states all year. The analysis is based on public polls and internal campaign surveys as well as spending on television advertising, candidate visits, get-out-the-vote organizations and interviews with dozens of Republican and Democratic strategists in Washington, and in the most contested states.

A look at where the race stands state by state. The numbers in parenthesis reflect electoral votes.
—
SOLIDLY DEMOCRATIC (186):
California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.
—
LEANING DEMOCRATIC (85):
Iowa (6) – Romney sees opportunity in a key state for Obama in 2008. He’s visited twice in past week with a third trip planned for Monday. But Obama’s edge in eastern Iowa’s swing territory seen as greater than Romney’s edge in GOP-heavy western Iowa.
Michigan (16) – Despite lingering economic pain in the auto capital, Michigan has large minority and union voting blocs that favor Obama. Romney, a native son whose father was governor, sensed opportunity earlier in the campaign but his opposition to auto industry bailout is seen as prohibitive.
Minnesota (10) – Low unemployment and a long streak of Democratic presidential nominees carrying Minnesota give Obama confidence. But Romney began advertising there last week, followed quickly by Obama. Some see the ads as a way to reach competitive western Wisconsin, although Romney aides discussing sending Romney and Ryan there in campaign’s final week in light of tightening polls.
New Mexico (5) – Influx of Hispanic and younger voters are Obama advantages in this state pivotal in 2000 and 2004.
Ohio (18) – Obama has the organizing advantage, and unemployment has dropped steadily and held below the national rate this year. Obama reminded during debates that he’s due some of the credit for keeping Ohio auto plants open and expanding by supporting industry bailout. Romney is not ceding an inch. Some polls show race tightening, but most public and internal polls show Obama with the edge.
Pennsylvania (20) – Pennsylvania has been Democratic territory in recent presidential races. Romney has continued campaigning here and the Republican National Committee is advertising in the state. But registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by nearly 1 million.
Wisconsin (10) – Having led early on, Obama now running nearly even in polls with Romney, who hopes having native son Ryan on the ticket will help. Still, Obama is well organized in the state. It has a heavy union membership and many minorities, and Democrats have carried the state in past six presidential campaigns.

—
UP FOR GRABS (61):
Colorado (9) – The state’s conservative profile is changing. Young professionals and Hispanic voters were central to Obama in 2008, but the sluggish economy has hurt his standing. Romney seeing returns for his heavy investment in state where female voters in Denver’s suburbs play a big role.
Florida (29) – Florida has moved in Romney’s way steadily since the GOP’s convention this summer. Obama won in 2008, but the housing crisis and high unemployment are dogging him.
Nevada (6) – Nevada is the focal point of the nation’s household economic woes: No. 1 in unemployment, foreclosures and bankruptcies. The race is tight, but has moved Obama’s way in recent weeks, backed by huge labor and Hispanic voting blocs.
New Hampshire (4) – Romney has a vacation home in New Hampshire, which is next to Massachusetts, where Romney was governor. He won the 2012 primary big, but Obama peeled off this Bush state in 2008 and has visited often.
Virginia (13) – Long a GOP bastion, Obama carried Virginia in 2008 by turning out young and minority voters. This helps him in suburban northern Virginia but he struggles in the rural and conservative South and West. Romney is using Obama’s proposed cuts in military spending against this strong, defense contracting state. Virginia polls show a very close race.
—
LEANING REPUBLICAN (47):
Arizona (11) – 2008 GOP nominee John McCain’s single-digit victory in his home state, and Hispanic and young voter boom, give Obama hope that Arizona is trending as other states in the Southwest. But it’s seen little action from Democrats so far.
Indiana (11) – Obama broke a 44-year GOP trend by winning Indiana in 2008, albeit by a single percentage point. Unemployment is high and the tea party is a new factor, both working against Obama. He’s not actively campaigning in the state.
Missouri (10) – Obama’s campaign is eyeing Missouri after GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin’s comments on abortion and rape to see if it shifts the landscape, which currently favors Romney.
North Carolina (15) – Polls have tightened in North Carolina, where Obama has kept his ads on the air despite gains by Republicans and voters’ resounding rejection of a referendum to allow same-sex marriage. Obama continues to advertise, albeit at levels less than Romney and GOP-leaning groups, while Romney has dispatched some North Carolina staff to other states.

Oct. 29, 2012 at 9:11amIt’s not the undecided voters that will determine this race, it’s the dead and illegals that will vote for Obama, but obviously can’t be counted in polls. Just like last time, 50% of the same day registrations in Ohio will be fraudulent and for Obama. The DNC is bussing people from lost southern states daily to Ohio printing fake light bills so they can register/vote. States that allow you to register and vote on the same day with no photo id at all shouldn’t be counted at all. The only reason to allow this is to encourage untraceable voter fraud.

What shame, so many people have sacrificed so much for the Republic to have it destroyed by self indulgent politicians, Statists, crony capitalism, and now by this petty and cowardly Marxist ideologue.

GOD has our attention now, I’m very sure of this. PRAY and VOTE. PRAY for forgiveness for taking this precious FREEDOM for granted; VOTE early if you can then you can watch the polls or offer rides. Oct. 29, 2012 at 11:00amWe do champ and we actually pay attention to what the candidates say and particularly when they lie. If Romney and Ryan had such a good plan and message then why would they need to lie as a matter of course. The Welfare to Work lie, the Medicare cuts lie and Ryan’s auto plant closing lie (as the plant closed under Bush. The PRESIDENT on the other hand need only play Romney’s past statements to show how much the guy lies to his audience, himself and the country. You want to vote against the PRESIDENT go ahead, but stop trying to convince independents that he is a citizen or an honorable man. Citizens keep their money in their own country and be on American businesses. Honorable men talk straight about their positions and record. Oh and why is it that Romney feels a need to hide Ryan.

Oct. 29, 2012 at 11:01amSure Swampy–if Obama wins, it’s necessarily because of voter fraud. It couldn’t possibly be because voters are actually rejected the Tea Party’s extreme ideology and resistance to compromise (how could it be!). It couldn’t be because Tea Party folks pushed actual moderates (like Pawlenty and Huntsmen) our of the primaries while promoting a series of incredibly unqualified candidates (Bachmann, Perry, Cain, Santorum) all of whose campaigns imploded, leaving only a deeply flawed Mitt Romney–the grandfather of Obamacare–to run an incompetent campaign full of repeated unforced errors and flip-flops between insincere right wing extremism and centrism so dramatic that he has done severe damage to his credibility.
No–of course it would have to be voter fraud, right? Don’t be such a child.

Please, outline the extremist Tea Party positions. Personally I am tired of hearing this. What is extreme is the progressive positions. You want someone else to pay for your college, healthcare, retirement. You want to be able to do what ever drugs you want and have others pay for you. (I did a disability exam the other day on a man that is 52, he has alcohol induced tardive dyskenisa and we will pay for his poor life style choices the rest of his life.) You want to able to go out and have unprotected sex when ever you feel like it and have someone else pay for either the birth control or to butcher the unborn child. You want to tell me I can’t move my children to another public school because the teachers at theirs stink. Exactly who is more extreme?
So, exactly what do you fear about a small Federal Government and returning power to the states? Exactly how much of my money do you feel you are entitled to so you can feel good about yourself?

Oct. 29, 2012 at 3:36pmWhile it’s true undecided voters do need to be more aware, Republicans also need to figure out how to reach those people with a more persuasive message. Even though the MSM still have a stranglehold on political discourse (mainly through TV & newspapers), we’re at 50/50. If we were better at going around the MSM and better at pop culture politics, we’d win every election 60-40 (if not 70-30). I recently watched a YouTube clip of Milton Friedman on the old Phil Donahue Show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-o0kD9f6wo&feature=related); the conviction and ease with which Friedman deconstructed Donahue’s left-loaded question was a thing of beauty! Why our pundits and spokespeople can’t do the same is beyond me. The bottom line–as history has proven–is that socialism doesn’t work. How anybody can still be undecided about that is purely a function of the Left’s effectiveness at propoganda (emotional button-pushing). As long as we let them stay close, they’ll steal it if they can’t win it (like Franken did against Coleman in MN).

Were I an R I would surely be as concerned as you seem to be. But, I would be concerned about the philosophical underpinnings of the leadership of my party and why my party consistently ostracizes and rejects anyone with a profound understanding of, and belief in, the application of our founding principles to the day to day operations of government. Peace.

That is the plan. What state are you in? Besides states that are in the bag – there are also people who do not plan on voting because they hate both parties. These people should be represented, and they usually like the things Gary Johnson stands for

Oct. 29, 2012 at 1:06pmSoy, you act as if your ability to discern facts and reality is somehow better or more accurate than people who believe voting for Johnson is a wasted vote that will help re-elect Obama. If he or Ron Paul were to gain real traction they would take votes from Romney not Obama. That is my point. Are you old enough to remember Ross Perot? That is what happens when we split small government vote. You are not going to get sack draggers to vote for someone that is not promising them more booty.
Democrats are progressive socialists at best and communists at worst. Why would they vote for Romney or your ‘libertarian’ candidate? Quit acting like you are so much smarter than everyone else when you have NO FACTS on your side. Study history and learn from those who came before you.
We have a choice between shrinking government and bowing down to the almighty state. vote for Johnson…if enough do, enjoy your chains and you sophomoric intellect.

You are incredibly defensive. My original post was completely rational and the replies were: “give it up”, “pathetic”, “ignorant”, “stupid”, “coward”, “middle finger”……You yourself called me “moron”, “idiot”, and condescending at the end. Now you are going to sit there and criticize the manner in which I explain things?!?!?!? UNBELIEVABLE
Republican types on this site make fun of democrats by saying they don’t have common sense and resort to name calling because they have no facts. But when people like yourself are presented with facts, you act the same as democrats.
Bottom Line: Mitt Romney is too liberal for me. I am voting for the best candidate (and he is the best candidate if you believe in small government). If me voting for Gary Johnson somehow hurts Mitt Romney, then fix the election laws instead of whining about people voting for the right person.

Hopefully damage will be minimal and losses won’t be as large as projected. Pennsylvania is one of those coastal states that could be heavily impacted and lingering problems could make the ground game difficult for both parties. The state is most important for Obama. If Pennsylvania goes red the election is over.

Oct. 29, 2012 at 8:13amIn honor of National Breast Cancer Month I have a request from the supporters of Ron Paul and Gary Johnson (as well as those who would vote against Obama but choose not to vote at all):
The Unisted States has cancer and is at risk of dying. In stead of ignoring it or planning for the double mastectomy, let’s try shrinking the tumor so we have more options. A bit of radiation now and chemo next year so we can save the life. And if the tumor shrinks enough now, we can do a lumpectomy and save the country’s life and save the form. If it stays the same, we lose nothing. If it grows we can still apply agressive chemo in two years and still have the option of a mastectomy in four.
My point is, ignoring the cancer by not voting or by fighting for the candidate that won’t win this time will elect Obama. Voting for Romney might not be the cure in your opinion, but it halts the cancer’s growth and makes it controlable as we fill the House and Senate with better people. And if Romney slides, we stand, we shout, we let him hear us and we run a new person in the primary who will be on oir side. By then Obama will be gone andthe Democrats will have nothing to do but put up a Romney-like (from 2004) candidate, making our guy look better.
Don’t just fight, fight smart.

I only know of a hand full of people that think BHO is doing a great job. Many people around here are furious over the Benghazi mess. Ohio State however has been signing students up to vote early for BHO. The last I heard they had over 3000 votes and were still pushing for more. I do not think this map is accurate. Oct. 30, 2012 at 8:08amYes Ma’am It will be because of voter fraud! I too find very few any more that are proud Obama card carrying members ;) It seems like for every 5 people I talk to maybe 1 still holds the Obama torch. I am involved in community stuff that puts me in a variety of social situations that should give a balanced perspective of folks….just don’t see the reason for such a “close race” they outline in the media. My husband also knows that there are in fact faaaaaaaar more conservative firefighters and Romney/ Ryan supporters than the Unions like to promote there are. Even union guys lol. Things are just kept on the down low as you would imagine, but widely talked about amongst themselves. So I guess that’s the good news ;) As far as the Somalia population in central Ohio….trust me when I tell you there ARE areas that are little mini communities run by head guys. Communication from outsiders such as medics/firefighters on runs the same guy shows up to different addresses frequently to do the talking for others…quite scary stuff as these women are clearly abused and not allowed to even make eye contact with other males, even rescue workers…..BUT hey they can Vote in van loads !!

Oct. 29, 2012 at 8:38amYou hit the nail right on the head. The AP is just another leftist liberal controlled arm of the media, fully “In the tank” for Obama.
We don’t need to worry about what the “POLITBUREAU” Mainstream Media says about anything. PAY THEM NO ATTENTION AT ALL!!! They all, EXCEPT FOX, act and sound like the press did in Stalin’s USSR or China under Mao.
Freedom of thought in ANY of the Mainstream Media is totally forbidden. Any reporter who dares to think for him or her self is either reassigned or else terminated. If they want to keep their job, they report ONLY what they are told to report. Freedom of the Press is no longer true. Marxist professors in the Universities and Colleges of Journalism have so indoctrinated both media moguls and reporters that the ability to critically analyze any issue is automatically slanted toward Socialist thought.
They are all far too stupid to see what socialism has wrought for every society where it has been tried, ECONOMIC AND MORAL DESTRUCTION!!! GOVERNMENT SPONSORED SQUALOR FOR THE MASSES WHILE THE LEADERSHIP LIVE LIVES OF LUXURY!!! Yet, they, the Mainstream media, keep on trying to turn the greatest bastion of freedom into such a socialist quagmire. It really makes no sense whatsoever.
