House Armed Services Committee Chair to Obama: Your Libya Remarks Sound ‘Implausible’

Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee excoriated President Obama Monday in a sharply-worded letter, telling the president that his recounting of the events surrounding the brutal terror attack on our diplomatic outpost in Benghazi that left four Americans dead, sounds “implausible.” Lawmakers have been critical of the Obama administration’s handling of the deadly siege in Libya.

According to Defense News, McKeon’s letter was catalyzed by comments made October 26 by the president during a radio appearance. In his interview, Obama maintained that he issued a series of directives immediately following the attack, including one to “make sure that we are securing our personnel and doing whatever we need to.” The statement struck a cord with McKeon, who wonders why the Obama White House would not have used its military to secure the U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi.

DN reports that the letter was released directly following a televised interview in which the president assumed responsibility for the terror attack, saying the ultimately, it lies on his own shoulders. Obama then vowed retribution to anyone inside the U.S. government who “didn’t do their job.” In the letter, the HASC head wrote:

Your … directive would appear to involve potential actions by the U.S. military … There appears to be a discrepancy between your directive and the actions taken by the Department of Defense. As we are painfully aware, despite the fact that the military had resources in the area, the military did not deploy any assets to secure U.S. personnel in Benghazi during the hours the consulate and the annex were under attack … I find it implausible that the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the commander of U.S. Africa Command and the commander of U.S. European Command would have ignored a direct order from the commander in chief.

McKeon went on to ask several additional questions of Obama in his letter, including one in which he urged the president to clarify “to whom” he issued “this first directive and how was this directive communicated to the military and other agencies — verbally or in writing?” The California congressman also asked if, on the day of the attack, the president instructed the military to “move available assets into Libya” and if he gave military commanders authority to “take any and all necessary measures to secure U.S. personnel, including specifically the authority to enter Libyan airspace.”

In addition, McKeon, who has served as HASC chairman since the Republican takeover of the House of Representatives in 2010, also asked the president to “describe any recommendations provided to you regarding available military support and any orders you gave to them.”

Republicans across the country have roundly condemned the president’s handling of the terror attack in Libya that left four Americans — including a U.S. ambassador and two Navy SEALs dead — and their scrutiny is only intensifying as new details, and discrepancies, come to light.

Earlier on Monday, Sen. John McCain accused Obama of engaging in either a “massive cover-up” or “massive incompetence” regarding the Benghazi terror attack. The facts as they stand now indicate that Obama along with senior administration officials knew of the attack as it was actually unfolding on the eleventh anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

  If the former SEAL was trying to Laser Designate targets, the questions has to be asked what was he trying to designate and why or to who? how did the communicate to the US that they where under attack? Did they come up on Guard Frequency? Everyone hears Guard?

The attackers cannot or willnot follow instructions and all are killed. Remember Stevens couldnot be accounted for until he was dragged to a hospital hours after the attack started. The order to stand down was given to give time so the kidnap/capture could play out. It should have only taken a few hours. The firefight lasted seven hours frustrating the attackers. Now Obama is playing dumb on the subject and looking for a fall guy. What does Hillary know that Bill wants to hold over his buddy Obamas head? If this scenario is true…this is a treas0nous act concockted by a setting president. If so….the electric chair would not serve the american publics rage. CBS broadcast and a firing squad sounds good.

Yes and how unbelieveable is it that two career military men, General Hamm of AFRICON, and Rear Admiral — commander of the USS Stennis Carrier Strike Group — were both relieved of their positions a week after Benghazi? Both in the same theater? Both in a position to respond to calls for help. Could it possibly be that they, too, refused to “stand down?” Something huge is happening here, and it is either incomprehensibly incompetent or evil beyond understanding.

Mr McKeon seems to be one of the few to make an intelligent assessment of the situation. It is obvious that the president was side stepping again. It’s about time that someone actually called him on it by doing something other than whining on TV.
Why is it that nobody in the military is talking? The people who were on the ground the night of the attack need to be called to speak before congress. Notice that congress is silent just like almost everyone else. The X military and CIA give their opinions but only hear about unnamed sources concerning what actually happened that night.

The operative word here is “siege”. A siege is a prolonged armed conflict. With a proper administration that prefers to offend Americans and not muslims/islams this would not have been a siege. It would have been cut short by sending help to Americans instead of coddling terrorists.

  They should no be there, While Bush was in office they took out the taliban and then just kept the peace, Obama is making sure our troops are in harms way, His claiming he ended the war in Iraq is a joke, he used the same exit date that Bush had put in place. obama and his staff were watching the entire attack in real time in the white house situation room. obama did nothing to help. he was asked repeatedly…..for help! obama listened and watched for 7 hours…
what was his response? a campaign trip to Las Vegas!!!!!!

  There is evidence now that at least one Seal on the embassy roof used a laser targeter to illuminate the mortar position; he either expected help to be in the area from a drone or aircraft, or one was on the way in before they were called back.
  
  This mess is getting deeper and deeper, and we have a traitor of a President in the White House.
  
  I will not be surprised at all if Obama uses the hurricane as an excuse to permanently cancel the upcoming elections, or as some specify, take the matter to court to delay them due to the hurricane and weather ‘disenfranchising so many voters’ who are in Obama states.

I wouldn’t put much stock in anything Howard “the Buck” McClown says.
The Republican traitors already put our CIA assets in Libya in danger last week when they published their names.
If they cared about our embassy staff, they wouldn’t have cut $350 million from Obama’s embassy security budget last year.
They only care about grandstanding and defeating Obama.
Because, you know, the lowest effective tax rates since the 1950s, the biggest Fortune 500 corporate profits ever, and all-time stock market highs are sure signs that Obama is a socialist who hates America.

How could republicans have cut $350,000,000 from the State Department budget when we haven’t had a budget in over three years? Even if the appropriation under the continuing resolution were reduced, it’s still up to the State Department to cut back in some areas, such as Chevy Volts and charging stations in Europe, to ensure security for personnel in dangerous assignments like Lybia. How much does it cost to send Hillary Clinton all over the world? BTW, the lowest effective tax rates we now enjoy came from George W. Bush and are due to expire January 1, 2013.   The President submits a budget, congress votes on the budget. The one budget Obama did submit received no votes in favor, not one from either party. The house wrote, approved through a Bi-partisan vote a budget. They submitted it to the senate for a vote. Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D), refuses to bring the budget to the floor for a vote.
