So What’s the Deal With That Romney Jeep Ad That Has the Left so Annoyed?

The Romney campaign over the weekend released an ad in Ohio claiming President Barack Obama “took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy, and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China.”

The reaction from the left was swift and furious.

“Romney has become THE [sic] definition of a desperate & deceptive candidate as he airs a completely false ad on Jeep moving to China,” former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland tweeted.

Others were a little less polished in their criticisms.

“There’s basic dishonesty and then there’s f-you dishonesty — dishonesty so blatant, so consciously abusive of facts that everyone knows, that it deserves a category of its own. Kato Keilin: dishonesty. O.J.: f-you dishonesty,” The Daily Beast’s Michael Tomasky writes.

“Romney’s new ad about Jeeps and Italy is f-you dishonest,” he adds.

Even former President Bill Clinton weighed in on the ad:

Is the ad as dishonest as they say it is? Let’s look at the facts.

During a campaign stop in Defiance, Ohio, last Thursday, Romney claimed that Jeep was mulling a proposal to move “all” production to China.

“I saw a story today that one of the great manufacturers in this state Jeep — now owned by the Italians — is thinking of moving all production to China,” Romney told the crowd of Ohioan supporters.

This is not true.

Romney was referring a recent a Bloomberg report that states the following:

Fiat SpA (F), majority owner of Chrysler Group LLC, plans to return Jeep output to China and may eventually make all of its models in that country, according to the head of both automakers’ operations in the region.

Mike Manley, chief operating officer of Fiat and Chrysler in Asia, is also quoted as saying: “Fiat [the majority owner of Chrysler Group LLC] is in ‘very detailed conversations’ with its Chinese partner, Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. (2238), about making Jeeps in the world’s largest auto market.”

But what this means is that Fiat is considering adding Jeep production sites in China, not moving all of them out of the U.S.

Chrysler even issued a formal statement on the matter:

Let’s set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China. It’s simply reviewing the opportunities to return Jeep output to China for the world’s largest auto market. U.S. Jeep assembly lines will continue to stay in operation. A careful and unbiased reading of the Bloomberg take would have saved unnecessary fantasies and extravagant comments.

If the Romney ad accused President Obama of being somehow tied to all Jeep production being moved to China, that would be flat-out untrue.

However, this is what the ad states: “Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy, and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China. Mitt Romney will fight for every American job.”

Technically, none of this is inaccurate. President Obama did take GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy, the U.S. Treasury Department did sell its stake in Chrysler to Fiat, and Fiat is considering adding production jobs in China.

But what do you think the ad is trying to say?

Bottom Line: Without providing the full context of Fiat’s China talks, the Romney ad offers an incomplete picture of Jeep’s situation and is therefore misleading. Now we’re not sure if it quite rises to the level of O. J. Simpson “f-you dishonesty” or whether it’s as dishonest as accusing someone of killing a steelworker’s wife with cancer, but it’s misleading nonetheless.

Chrysler is having detailed conversations with china about making jeeps in china, sounds like that they are about to make jeeps in china, romney did not lie,he told the truth,if you are not going to have jeeps made in china, then why have serious talks, the left want to make romney out to be a lair, and his wife out to be a racist for her comment about having grown ups in the running this country,but the left has no problem with obama dividing the country on race,he loves to blame whites for every thing,even wanting to force whites to pay for slavery that we had nothing to do with,he loves to avoid the truth about libya,fast and furious, health care,the debt and his hatred for the capitailist system, so if romney stretched the truth at least he did not just come out and lie about who and what he is unlike obama.

  Chrysler is not owned by Fiat. Fiat is the majority share holder. Just like Willard was the majority holder in Bane.
  Chrysler is trying to open up production in China in order to sell vehicles IN CHINA. Just like Honda and Toyota build cars here in the US to save costs when selling them to the US.
  Jobs will be created in China but NONE will be lost here in the US.

  The words may be accurate but it is phrased in such a way as to cause alarm beyond the truth.
  
  I don’t think that the Romney campaign needed to do this as it tends to slightly sully his campaign.
  
  Mr Becket’s gentle statement “Others were a little less polished in their criticisms.” made me laugh out loud. I was unable to explain it to my young daughter who came rushing over to see what she was missing out on.

  To any sensible reading of this statement, it sounds like Jeep is returning output to China and “may eventually make ALL of its models in that country.” Sounds to me like Jeep is/was considering moving its production to China.

  I don’t see a big deal – G M just built a new plant in China to make Chevys. They could have used the plant in Oklahoma City that was shut down in 2005. About 90 Union stewards show up 5 days a week and do ???? but still get a pay check and G M still owens the plant. I don’t know why they don’t sell it – almost across from Tinker AFB and is on interstate.

  I agree CommonSenseGuy, great post…my southern parents raised their children to respect the black community, to treat them as we would want to be treated and it did not matter what the KKK democrats did to influence much of our community…even though it hurt my parents financially to take the stands they did, they stood firm for what was right. We were taught by two wonderful people that honor and character mattered and I will always be grateful for their example. But they never could understand why radical blacks wanted them to pay for mistakes made by others and I do not either.   it was a few months ago that the head of ge was on video saying that they are in the mist of moving most of their production to chins,but it would take a while so that it would not be obvious to america,so if ge is moving to china and taking all the jobs from americans for cheap labor,then don’t thing the auto companies wont do the same,they already have most of the parts made over seas,why not make the whole car over seas,what i don’t get is why the unions are not screaming about the loss of the jobs, o yeah,it would effect obamas reelection and plus they all got paid with tax payer money called bail outs,i call it a bribe.

Obama didn’t do any favors for GMC or jeep. All the money that the tax payers gave to keep them alive was given to the unions. The car companies still lost money, and still had to file chapter 11s. Romney suggested they do that in the beginning. And if he quotes a newspaper, it doesn’t make him wrong.

I have been driving Jeeps since 1992, 20 years now. Obama ruined Chrysler by letting it get sold to FIAT (fix it again, Tony). They will ruin Jeep by letting it get built in China. Does that mean that the Jeep plant Obama kept visiting in Toledo is closing? I guess he lied to everyone there?
I am still driving a Jeep made in America/Canada. I don’t know what I will get after that, but not one built in China. The Italians are good at building specialty, high-performance cars, but I can’t recall them being successful with any mass-produced cars.

  I loved my Jeep, but needed a bigger truck. The one area where American car companies blow the pants off the foreign competition is trucks. Who is it again that is “encouraging” everyone to buy fuel efficient vehicles and get rid of their SUV’s and Trucks? That would be the guy who is going around saying he saved GM! Had Chrysler not been sold to the Italians but required to stay in USA through Os bankruptcy overseeing; would any Jeeps be made anywhere other than the USA? Instead of the Italians manufacturing should have been moved to a right-to work state, which would save on union demands and costs to workers.

I do not see anything being misleading. Jeep is USA, just after horses and right before quads. The jobs should have stayed here for all Jeeps produced. You want our cars…pay our workers

Bottom line, Jeeps will be made in China. The ad did not say “all Jeeps” This is the age of sound bytes and this sound byte is accurate, not misleading.

The Dems were heavily in favor of bankrupting the Auto Industry. That’s already in the books. The reasoning? F Force them to take the money and then install obama appointees to the board and chair positions FOR TAKING THE MONEY! In the package was a bankruptcy that took shareholder holdings and converted them into re-issued shares to the Unions as well.
That’s called “a takeover” and would be illegal in any private Corporation. On top of this Jeep was in fact sold to FIAT of Italy. What Fiat does is out of our hands and THEY benefited from the bailout, as will China. The American taxpayer was steamrolled!

Let’s see here. A Romney mistake is excoriated by the Obamanazis but Obama being complicit in the murder of four Americans so he can campaign that horrible event as just a bump in the road is fine. Right!
