Its the arc of a high tension line. At those voltages if something like a piece of flying debris or collapsing support structures cross the lines the short will vaporize whatever it was and then the voltage will continue to jump across 7 feet no problem and the light is extremely bright. It stops and starts because it tripped a circuit breaker which is automated and keeps trying to reset and turn the power back on after a pre-set delay time in case the short circuit has cleared. This is why the power company shut power off to a large area. Less damage if theres no power flowing when things start getting beat up by winds and sea water.
Here are two instances of switches being opened when there is that much voltage and current involved. These were nice arcs, but no damage. Bigger arc than usual though! Keep in mind its daytime so they would look much much brighter at night.

Hate to be a non conformist but everybody but the young and the lame deserve it in NY. I’m sick to death of the NY liberal bias and attitude. They are truly arrogant ass holes. If you have ever walked down the street in NY or had to spend any amount of time in the city, “You know what I’m talkin bout”.

One more tragedy we have to pay for.

  was there 20 years. rude factor made me finally leave, along with all the other BS that town has to offer. No feeling of pity for that place or its ideologically rigid people!
  I lived across Manh and know that power plant well. Not so sure it wasn’t an excuse to not have to deal with it any longer, since they were forced to go with almost home heating type back in the 70′s from what the place was designed for – so the premium “low sulfur” type oil was burned in that plant – I don’t know if they had switch since then to ??gas?? – garbage?? – who cares. ConEd prob blew it up as a good excuse to not have to deal with it any longer.

  You’re a despicable excuse for human being. I’ve lived in NY for 20 years. I just came back from a church next door, where a shelter is being set up. It’s full of women and children, decent people, Christians, good citizens. People are risking their lives, giving what little they have to save and help others.   CIA caused the explosion? Corrosive sea water flooding and making it’s way into high voltage electrical electrical equipment and this sort of thing is going to happen according to the laws of physics. It’s simple science in the face of natural disaster. Wait a minute…..maybe the CIA also caused the storm and guided it into Manhatten so the water would get to to Con Ed plant and create the explosion. OMG! I’ll bet they also caused the undersea earthquake that caused the tsunami that flooded Japan and caused THAT nuclear power plant to melt down. BTW, SARCASM in case anyone missed it.
  
  When we conservatives/libertarians say silly things like that it only hurts our cause. There are plans and schemes out there intended to move radical agendas forward (weapons to al quaeda in Libya and Syria, behind the scenes talks with Iran, the Muslim Brotherhood in the White House, the coming caliphate, George Soros’ Open Society, etc.. ). These things are right in front of us, dangerous, and must be fought. There is no need to waste energy and allow ourselves to be distracted trying to see the CIA behind every wind storm, rain, or structure fire. Keep your eye on the ball.

  I agree with you .Its a natural cause.However you can’t totally blame the original poster.We have been working on pushing nudging hurricanes out to sea for safety reasons.[Don't know how far they are with it though].Please remember that if it can be used for good. it can also be used for evil.Considering what this administration has already done.Is it so unreasonable to entertain the idea that they would use something like this, if they could?
  I do believe that it is just nature.Its a true coincidence.This isn’t to say, that the powers that be, won’t abuse the crisis though.Only time will tell.If their track record is any indication, though ,I fully expect there to be a crisis after the crisis.I don’t mean the natural consquences either.

If you want martial law, you have to create looting. Someone intentionally turned out the lights. What you watched might have been the start of a CIA backed power grab.
If your going to create anarchy, you turn the lights out so looting can begin. Next you send in the military. Delay the elections at least in the storm area. Next, you sign in martial law. Last, you hold on to your dictatorship until you are effectively the dictator without the need for martial law.

  This was a controlled demolition storm. They denied the con ed plant explosion to cover their plan for going into Iran. The banksters and NWO are behind this false flag operation. Dick Cheney was setting the charges at the con ed plant and Donald Rumsfeld blew the slurry wall allowing Manhattan to flood. And George W Bush was at HARRP guiding the storm. Looks like a couple of transformers going off, not the massive explosion that was reported. Looks like either the video is wrong or the reports have been exaggerated, which often happens at times like this.

I don’t know why there is 4 min on this video!!! about half way through the screen blanks and then the whole thing restarts again. Not two flashes just one repeating!! The give away is the person walking around in the lower middle of the shot and the blank screen!!

  I checked on EarthCam.com, Time Square is well lit, people are walking around. Lower Manhattan is dark, the Wall St. and other cameras are off. There is an explosion at a power plant. Wall Street halted trading today and tomorrow. I just can’t help but wonder if this storm is perfect cover for something nefarious. Hopefully not, but I don’t want to discount the possibility something else is going on here.
