Lower Manhattan goes dark during the hybrid storm Sandy, on Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, viewed from the Brooklyn borough of New York. Authorities warned that New York City and Long Island could get the worst of the storm surge: an 11-foot onslaught of seawater that could swamp lower areas of the city. (Credit: AP)
(TheBlaze/AP) — New York City’s utility company says residents who lost power during superstorm Sandy could be without power anywhere from several days to a week, the Associated Press reports.
Consolidated Edison says it’s dealing with several different issues – downed overhead lines, a planned shutdown of underground networks and an unexpected explosion at a substation that darkened a large part of lower Manhattan. The company intentionally shut off certain parts of the power grid to limit the damage from the storm.
Senior Vice President John Miksad says the planned outage should take three to four days to restore, while the explosion and the downed lines could take up to a week.
The company said 670,000 customers are without power in New York City and Westchester. A customer is an individual meter, so the number of actual people affected is likely higher.

Oct. 30, 2012 at 6:49amCentral NY was left without power in the middle of the winter after a snow storm for a couple of weeks. It was a horrible experience but they got through it. I hope the people of NYC can manage to get through this without letting things get out of hand. They were certainly warned enough.

Oct. 30, 2012 at 4:19amWhat? I never wanted to see those loons on those streets more than I did last night. Seriously- They could have been rounded up and an intervention could ensue. If they were forced to watch how rapidly the private sector and so called Capitalist funded charity and relief moves in, while the Government lags behind confused, they would learn a great deal about the real world in America.
If that doesn’t work make them watch the immigrant business owners come in with smiles on their faces and set their World right joyous that they have the opportunity to rebuild again America..

Oct. 30, 2012 at 3:17amIt’s a good thing all those New Yorkers strongly believe in their 2nd Amendment rights. They will be able to protect themselves from the wolves when the lighs go out.
What they don’t? Let’s see how many believe after all this is over.

Oct. 30, 2012 at 4:47amNope — as someone said last night … the only ones with guns are cops and criminals .. and most of the cops live outside of the city (can’t afford to live in the expensive areas) .. .so it will be the criminals .. good luck NYC .. perhaps after this you should vote for people who will defend your Constitutional rights .. not take them away.

Oct. 30, 2012 at 12:40amWatch this VERY carefully!
Pay attention to the behavior of the people!
If you have not done your “prepping” for the upcoming SHTF/WROL heading our way, you will want to observe what happens here. These people may become animals in a day or two if they can’t use ATM’s, have no stockpiles of food, no cash on hand at home for “cash only” transactions, ETC.
I remember a small town near boston 2 years ago. Due to some sewer problems, the city issued a “boil water” order and within hours, the grocery stores were bought out of bottled water and the “have nots” were robbing and assaulting the “haves” in the parking lots as they tried to load their water into their cars…and this was all over a 36 hours “boil water” order.
You will NOT see calm, noble, patient, honorable people in the US as you did in Japan after the Tsunami hit.
