MSNBC Anchor Criticizes Romney’s Storm Volunteerism: Red Cross Doesn’t Want or Need Your Non-Monetary Donations
MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday questioned the sincerity of a “storm relief” event organized by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in Ohio, arguing that the Red Cross apparently has no need for donated clothes or canned goods.
“You’ve got the image of Mitt Romney doing what, they say, is not a campaign event in the same space they were going to hold a campaign event. They say they’re making collections for hurricane and storm relief,” the MSNBC anchor said during a Tuesday broadcast of “Mitchell Reports.”
“We checked with the Red Cross. The Red Cross said, while they’re always grateful for donations, that this is not what they need or want. They always tell people, ‘please donate money, because we have our own packagers, wholesalers’ — they have their own distribution system,” she continued.
Yes, with major weather events like Superstorm Sandy, the Red Cross does put an emphasis on monetary donations. That’s probably why, along with tables “piled high with flashlights, batteries, diapers, toothbrushes, mini-deodorants, fleece blankets, cereal, toilet paper and canned goods,” the Romney event also featured two large TV screens encouraging supporters to text “REDCROSS” to 90999 and “make a $10 donation.”
“And to now get these canned goods from the Romney event in Ohio, and have to first package it — used clothes, they have to clean, they can’t go directly to victims. So, what they need are donations of blood and donations of money,” said Mitchell. “It does seem like a thinly veiled, uh, why Ohio? Why choose Ohio for –”
“You, know, right, because the storm is kinda’” the Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza chimed in.
“Not in Ohio?” she said, finishing his sentence for him.
Well, actually, if you want to get technical about it:
Yes, the effects of Superstorm Sandy have been felt in Ohio:
Hundreds of thousands of homes across Northeast Ohio were still without power this morning as high winds and rain from tropical rainstorm Sandy lashed a wide swath of the country, from Florida to Canada and as far west as Chicago.
And just for good measure: “The state of Ohio is opening its emergency operations center after Superstorm Sandy left more than 250,000 people without power.”
Representatives from the Red Cross have not yet responded to TheBlaze’s request for comment regarding Mitchell’s remarks, which you can see below:
UPDATE — In case you missed it, MSNBC’s Martin Bashir also felt it was necessary to criticize the Romney campaign’s disaster relief efforts:

Posted on October 30, 2012 at 3:56pm@ Supertrucker – $40,000.00 a year would be too much. Look at all the veteran groups whose national commanders work for FREE as well as everyone else in the organization. And overall, I would say those organizations do more for the country/community than the American Red Cross could ever do considering most of the money collected goes in the administrators pockets. If you are truly doing something from you heart with pride and dedication – you will do it for tears of admiration and respect – not money!! Ain’t it strange how most (98%) of the Vets in these organizations are conservatives…….

Posted on October 30, 2012 at 3:58pmFor Supertrukerdave: Considering her span of control and responsibilities, $250K-$300K plus expenses seems quite enough. Especially when compared to the amount that the head of the Salvation Army makes per year. The Red Cross is (or was) largely voluntary and humanitarian, so exactly why would the head of the Red Cross need to make nearly $1mil per year. I’d do it for much less than her and I’m suspecting there are many in the US who would also. A four star general with considerably more responsibility and span of control only makes ~$200K per year.

Posted on October 30, 2012 at 4:23pmJust for Andrea’s information, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (of which Mitt Romney is a member) is a partner with the Red Cross. The Red Cross gets a great deal of blood, food, clothing, hygiene kits and other necessities from the “LDS” church. (You would be surprised how much is donated to the Red Cross from the “LDS” church). Why would you criticize Mitt for collecting this stuff which would likely then be turned over to the “LDS” church and requested by the Red Cross anyway? I think the Liberals have a hard time understanding that people donating their time, effort and goods is the way a country comes together, more than waiting around for the government to give it to you. Mitt has been trained (when he was a bishop and even just a member of the “LDS” church) how to organize an area in times of disaster. Give him props for stepping up and being part of America, instead of sitting in a fancy plaza waiting for FEMA to give him a report next month on what the damages were.

The DIRECTOR of our local Youth for Christ office makes less than $40K a year, and the staff make around $30K. All of their salaries are sponsored by private sponsors, so that all the money raised can go to help troubled kids. Other than 4 or 5 full time folks the rest of the staff is volunteer. They help mentor kids in jail, sponsor GED training, job training, clean social events, counciling, etc. Charity should not make you rich, if you are in it for the money, you are in it with the wrong heart!

But there were churches and other organizations, including people who drove to our area carrying supplies, which were greatly appreciated. So much so, that when Katrina hit Mississippi, we loaded up our 25 foot trailer with supplies we purchased and others donated, and carried them over to inter-faith church centers in Boloxi where they were glad to see them… twice; near 16,000 lbs per load. For every dollar donated to the food bank, they can provide $7 worth of food and services to the hungry. HOWEVER, they NEVER turn down donations of food and time. It’s the volunteers and the people that donate that make these organizations work. Without them, these agencies wouldn’t exist. It’s all for the common cause. Therefore, I have to say that Romney is doing EXACTLY what he should be doing……rallying the support of the people.

Not everyone can get to a RC station, and the RC can’t take care of the millions of people who are without basic needs like canned food, bottled water and warm clothes. Romney clearly told people to donate money to the RC, and for those people who wanted to share their goods, he was willing to collect and transport those goods to people who could use them. Reading that figure really bothered me, so I had to look it up. According to About.com, Marsha J Evens is not with the American Red Cross now (although in 2003 she was paid $468,599 in salary/benefits. As of 2010 the CEO is Gail McGovern who makes: $500,000 PLUS a signing bonus of $65,000. In fact other charities are…. United Way CEO: $1,037,140 and UNICEF CEO: $201,351.

Also they came in a stepped on the local red cross branch and demanded all donations be sent to the national office. Sorry but I don’t think the national office has a friggin clue how to run anything! You send money for the people of Sandy find local churches on the east coast and donate there cause they will get the items to the people Much Much Much faster!

Posted on October 30, 2012 at 7:41pm•As of 2010, Marsha J. Evans, was no longer employed by the American Red Cross. According to United Press International, Gail McGovern took over as CEO of the American Red Cross in 2008 at an annual salary of $500,000 plus a signing bonus of $65,000.
•Brian Gallagher is still President and CEO of United Way, and currently earns $1,037,140 a year, according to a December 2010 report from the American Institute of Philanthropy.
•W. Todd Bassett is no longer National Commander of the Salvation Army. The current National Commander, Israel L. Gaither, is paid somewhere between $79,389 and $243,248 annually for his services. (Since the Salvation Army, as a religious organization, doesn’t report its expenses to the IRS, the only available figures for executive salaries are estimates, which vary greatly from source to source.)
•UNICEF’s Executive Director, Anthony Lake, earns $201,351 a year, according to a 2010 communique from the organization — dramatically less than the $1,200,000 per year claimed in the message above.
•Dave Toycen, the President of World Vision Canada, earns $184,000 per year plus a “moderate vehicle allowance,” according to that organization’s annual report to the Canada Revenue Agency. Again, that is significantly less than what is claimed above.

Posted on October 30, 2012 at 7:51pmHmmm, this is what I found when I checked your info. The problem for liars on here is that some people will take to time to check what they say. I’m not defending the Red Cross. I’m calling out a liar that is Bumfuzzle. Here is Sarah herself responding to a similar idiot.
Hi, This is Sarah, from the American Red Cross. Thanks for inviting me to respond to your question. The current Red Cross acting CEO makes about $334,000 per year. I know this may seem like a lot, but really it isn’t if you consider what a big job the CEO has and the size of our organization. If the Red Cross was a public company, our combined expenses of $3.5 billion, paid workforce of nearly 35,000 and volunteer base of over half a million would give the organization an equivalent ranking of a Fortune 650 company.
It is important to attract and retain talented individuals. Compensation figures made public in our 990 reflect the competitive market for top not-for-profit executives typical of a large market like Washington, D.C. You can see our complete financial report by visiting our website http://www.redcross.org/pubs/#report.
Also, to respond to another commenter, 89 percent of every dollar is invested in humanitarian programs and services. Only 10.8 percent of our budget goes toward operating expenses, like salaries and electricity. This is an extremely low percentage according to watchdog groups. We are excellent stewards of the donor dollar and have received a four-star rating from Charit

Many WWII Vets will not give money to the Red Cross. They always wanted to be paid for coffee and donuts, while the Salvation Army was always on the scene with free coffee & donuts for the Service men.
Rather than give money to Red Cross where the administration gets a large proportion of money raised, I’d ask how much they take for administration & other costs and how much goes to charity.
Then, I’d give to the 700 Club, “Operation Blessing” who are always first at the scene and last to leave and get little or no recognition from the MSM for the good work they do.

Remember that? Who wants an old bra and panties used by Hillary. and some old soiled drawers and an old stained dress from Billy Joe Clinton. Billy Joe personalizes his undergarmets with a skid mark of authenticity, which is suppose to make them more valuable. I wonder if they were washed before donated. I’m surprised they haven’t been reported as being auctioned off on EBay to some rich liberal who’ll hang the trophy catch on a wall in some cheezy restaurant.

Posted on October 30, 2012 at 3:44pmAny sliver of “legitimacy” MSLSD once had went out the window once they hired Al “Hog Maws” Sharpton as a “news analyst”. Al cannot even speak the english language correctly.
From that point forward I would question anyone’s career decision to work for them knowing
that they put Sharpton on the air.

Posted on October 31, 2012 at 1:05pmWe can have an impact on MSNBC if we all write the sponsors that support this garbage. A. Mitchell has already been caught editing video to make Romney look foolish, when in truth, the video actually shows he is right on. The extent MSNBC will go to spread bald face lies and manipulate scripts and videos to support their Far Left Wing Extremist to spread Socialism, just what this country doesn’t represent. Someone needs to sue Mitchell for defimation, lies and just plain UGLY!

Posted on October 30, 2012 at 3:10pmThe Paradoxical Commandments
by Dr. Kent M. Keith
People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.
The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.
People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.
People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.
Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

Posted on October 30, 2012 at 6:11pmI like that a lot! Thanks for sharing.
P.S. I give my “relief” donations to the Salvation Army. I remember hearing from the guys in ‘Nam that the Red Cross had “stores” behind the lines where soldiers could buy cigarettes, candy, etc. Meanwhile, the Salvation Army was right out in combat situations with the troops, giving away cigarettes, candy, blankets, etc. I donate blood through a local blood center. Forget the Red Cross.

Posted on October 30, 2012 at 3:20pmAh yes…the morally bankrupt, inherently hateful American left where even an act of goodwill in a time of grief and need is arbitrarily and summarily refused and devalued because it came from a “right winger”. Apparently food and clothing isn’t needed by people who have lost their homes and their possessions with only the clothes on their backs.
I just saw Obama give a speech at a Red Cross center…he threw in the obligatory “folks” euphemism he’s want to throw around when he wants to appear like he’s “one of us” and came off professorial and elitist again. But what particularly struck me was when he said that as Americans we don’t leave anyone behind…but apparently that doesn’t apply to ambassadors and security personnel in Benghazi begging for help against terrorists and are refused that help by their president.

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 1:21amIt isn’t just Andrea, that has made such outrageous statements. Look at the programs of, “The ED Show,” and “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.” The comments they make are stunning. They constantly stroke the Obama capaign, while tearing down Mitt Romney, as if he were a leper. This, while they display a banner of, Lean Forward! What is in it for MSNBC, to try to form facts in a negative manner toward one political party? In the daylight hours after Sandy hit shore and caused her damage, all other networks were reporting on the damage done by the storm. Yet, MSNBC, was declaring the woe of the democratic party and how they must get out paper ballots, and stated that this froze the campaign and would not allow Romney to campaign, while the Prez. would gain the spotligt because he appeared presidential, while doing his job as President! I don’t understand, but the station and their reporters are too obvious in their bias toward the current administration.

Posted on October 30, 2012 at 5:29pmI swore off making donations to the Red Cross back in the early ’80s when I found that they were trying to charge one of my troops a pretty hefty interest for a loan to take he and his family back to the states on emergency leave. A number of us NCOs got together and raised the money within our unit in two days and sent them on their way. That’s the way to do it.

Posted on October 30, 2012 at 3:40pmEveryone should stop buying cable from Comcast as they own NBC. When the money stops flowing they will get the point. Actually all advertisers of the WAPO, NYT, NBC, CNN, CBS, ABC, HuffPo, Buzzfeed and a few others should get messages from all citizens asking for the truth or the money stops with a big boycott from the public.

These people live in a bubble, but they also have tremendous power over a lot of clueless minds in this country.
