Dramatic New Video Surfaces of the Massive Manhattan Power Plant Explosion
One of the most incredible videos associated Hurricane Sandy was the massive explosion at a Con Ed power plant substation in Manhattan (see the original video here). Now, new video has surfaced of the explosion taken from a much closer perspective, given you a better idea of just how big the blow-up was.
Gothamist explains:
This stunning video, which appears to be taken from the Williamsburg waterfront, shows the dramatic explosion of the East Village Con Ed Substation that knocked out power to parts of downtown Manhattan. The blast happened during the Hurricane Sandy surge at approximately 9 p.m. on Monday night, casting a large swath of the island into darkness. We knew the explosion was a big one, but this video really conveys its frightening magnitude.
Here it is (CONTENT WARNING FOR LANGUAGE):
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Posted on October 31, 2012 at 2:38pmHave the 9/11 “truthers” blamed Bush or Cheney yet? Perhaps it was those mystical invisible people that supposedly wired the towers in plain sight so they could be imploded.
Most likely it was water hitting a hot boiler causing a steam explosion.

Posted on October 31, 2012 at 3:49pmApparently it was an overload at a substation. GIANT arcing, brilliant white light, but little in the way of explosive force.

Posted on October 31, 2012 at 5:17pm3000 psi + superheated steam boiler exploding would make a whole lot of noise and there would not be much of the building left.

Posted on October 31, 2012 at 11:55amDear Glenn: Please do something about that pop-up that I have to constantly fight with, and also I have serious problems with video only on your site. With the video I have to hit the refresh button twice to get the vid to finally play.
Thanks: jimbob1234

Stupid people don’t realize you can still run a lucrative internet news site WITHOUT pop-ups flying up on the screen with every click. People who worship a man to the extent that they will accept any amount annoyances from his money making schemes without ever voicing a complaint are stupid. Tell me that’s not you…

Posted on October 31, 2012 at 3:20pmI don’t even get pop up warnings from this site. There aren’t popups flying all over the place on this site. I see far more on other sites than I do here. I see one pop up every so often when I clear my history or cookies and it always comes from the main page, never after clicking an article.

Posted on October 31, 2012 at 4:52pmJIMBOB – On a browser you don’t use to play video (let’s say Firefox) and leave IE for everything else; go to Tools – Add-Ons – scroll down to Shockwave Flash – click “Disable.” You will lose all those auto-play videos. They’ll be replaced with static ads while most pop-ups disappear. The Blaze pop-up is part of this site and deserves your answer because you are not paying for your content.

Posted on October 31, 2012 at 11:07amThe Con Ed substation did not blow up because of some water.
I wonder what terrorist group is going to claim they did it?

Posted on October 31, 2012 at 10:19amIts not an explosion. A transformer or switch may have been ruptured in the process but the source of the light is an electrical arc. From the brightness of it I think it may have been arcing across conductors made from aluminum.

Posted on October 31, 2012 at 10:15amWell, I told Michael Moore not to stand next to a transformer after eating spicy chili beans with fish burros…
Seriously now, the one clapping over the site was an idiot; the transformers such as that will take a month or more to replace. Phoenix lost one of three main line transformers in a monsoon storm that threatened the city with brown and blackouts for weeks until one could be fabricated from scratch and delivered.
