‘The Road to Hell Is Paved With Democrats’ Sign Has S.C. Teacher in Hot Water

Teacher Laurie Humphrey Hangs Road to Hell is Paved With Democrats Sign in South Carolina Classroom

(Photo: WLTX)

A South Carolina teacher has reportedly become the most recent public educator to come under fire fore bringing politics into the classroom.  According to WLTX, Laurie Humphrey has been temporarily removed from her position at a Dutch Fork high school pending an investigation over a sign reading “The Road to Hell Is Paved With Democrats” that she hung near her desk.

“We’re still investigating the issue we want to make sure we have all sides and make sure we don’t make any decisions in haste,” Mark Bounds, a spokesman for the school district, commented. “Our Human Resource department is looking at the situation and making sure the students are taken care of and that we’re fair to the teacher.”

However, in the tense weeks before the general election, the school seemingly made it very clear what was acceptable and what wasn’t.

The Huffington Post relates part of the school rules:

The board opposes those actions that transform the schools into arenas for political activity. Activities that substantially disrupt or materially interfere with school activities are prohibited. Prohibited activities include the distribution of any cards, fliers, pamphlets, brochures, signs, pins, badges or any other political paraphernalia espousing any political party or candidate at any time on any district property during regular school hours.

WLTX has more:

Humphrey teaches social studies and this is the first disciplinary action she has received in her fifteen years of teaching, according to The State.  She has been at the Lexington-Richland 5 school district for 11 of those years.

Though Bounds added that “this was an example of extremely poor judgment on her part” and “in clear violation” of the school’s directives, there is apparently some question over whether or not the sign was part of a larger lesson on political campaigns.

However, this would hardly be the first time politics have seeped into the classroom.  Earlier this month a Richmond teacher reportedly likened a student’s clothing to KKK apparel, and who can forget North Carolina’s Tonya Dixon-Neely, who told a boy he could be “arrested” for speaking badly about Obama?  The “Mmm mmm mmm Barack Hussein Obama” children’s song has become something of a Republican catchphrase, and a new pro-Obama ad features children singing about what they consider to be Romney’s America, where “sick people just die” and “oil fills the sea” (though that technically didn’t happen in a classroom).

Bounds was unable to say whether Humphrey is being paid during the investigation, but remarked: “Being a teacher doesn’t take away your rights as a citizen. So, after hours on your own time we encourage teachers, we want them to be politically active, but they shouldn’t do it in a way that makes any student feel uncomfortable.”

The class room is no place for politics?…Are you kidding??? Try telling that to a UNION teacher…Liberal Teachers can teach about abortion and contraceptives, gay and lesbian sex positions, how wonderful communist countries are, hang photo’s of Karl Marx, excoriate the evils of the free market and evil capitalism, denounce the founding fathers and their principles, sing praises to obozo like he’s some kind of God….BUT hang a sign saying ‘The road to hell is paved with democrats’…THAT’S TOO POLITICAL??? Maybe the liberal school board is on a witch hunt for Conservative Teachers….

It is true, but like others have said, “leave the kids alone”. Just teach the kids reading, writing and arithmetic like you are supposed to. Our kids are stupid compared to those in many other countries.

The sign itself is great..no question.
But let’s get serious here…it’s time for teachers to get politics out of the classroom. Enough already! We didn’t like it when we saw videos of teachers making children sing “mm mm mm Barack Hussein Obama” and the numerous other propaganda exercises we saw them conduct using our children. We shouldn’t like this either, regardless of the sentiment expressed.
Get the effing politics out of our classrooms and get them back on track to competing with their Indian and Chinese counterparts who are destroying them academically.
Get the politics and the “social justice” idiocies out of our effing classrooms!

If she had said Obama Democrats, then she would have been factual. All she had to do was give them proof of his love for the teachings of Alinsky: http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/03/04/obama-alinsky-love-song

For those of you who do not know, in an interview with “Playboy”Alinsky praised hell:
ALINSKY: … if there is an afterlife, and I have anything to say about it, I will unreservedly choose to go to hell.
      PLAYBOY: Why?
ALINSKY: Hell would be heaven for me. All my life I’ve been with the have-nots. Over here, if you’re a have-not, you’re short of dough. If you’re a have-not in hell, you’re short of virtue. Once I get into hell, I’ll start organizing the have-nots over there.
      PLAYBOY: Why them?
ALINSKY: They’re my kind of people.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saul_Alinsky

IMO, there’s nothing wrong with teaching facts about a current POTUS in a high school SS class. Just don’t make it into a sign. I would have found that lesson fascinating.

You are correct, but we all know, and have all seen democrat, libeal progressive signs, chants, and songs all over left leaning schools with little or nothing at all bing done about it. So I can say that if the word democrat in this sign would have been republican instead, nothing would have happened to her. This is truely a double standard that needs to end. Politics needs to be takn out of schools or at least overed equaly from both sides in a class on politics.

Its just funny to me at the moment. Her sign is saying the same thing that I have been saying for years. But, at the same time I feel her students would have been better served had she put the sign in her front yard. Just as I have disagreed with so many of the educators that we have read about here, and seen in the recent news, there was no need for any of them to indoctrinate their students. This has nothing to do with educations and distracts from her given mission for each working day.

I might generally agree. Sometimes it is necessary to fight fire with fire. though. I believe the time has long since come. Liberalism is burning down this country. Many schools are nothing more than socialist indoctrination camps. Kids need some opposing views. School is there to teach and fortunately or unfortunately there are some hard realities that need to be taught. Debunking socialism and socialists, which has become a part of liberal/democrat programming, unfortunately needs to be done scholastically. Schools have become liberal playgounds.
