Famed pastor Rick Warren hosts an annual party for families who are looking for a safe, positive and fun way to celebrate Halloween. Rather than embracing negative messaging, children and parents, alike, can come in costume to play games and enjoy candy and a litany of family fun.
The event, called “Blocktober,” attracted an estimated 16,000 people on Wednesday night. While Warren’s house of worship, Saddleback Church, has celebrated alternative Halloween parties for most of the past 20 years, “Blocktober” has officially been in tact for the past three holidays.

The event was large to say the least. Warren and church officials setup activities across the Saddleback’s 120-acre Lake Forrest campus, with food trucks, candy, zip lines, obstacle courses, bouncing houses and plenty more being enjoyed by kids and parents, alike. The OC Register reports. An official description of the event on the church’s web site reads:
Your family is invited to a giant neighborhood block party at Saddleback Church on October 31, 2012 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.! The entire Lake Forest church campus will be transformed into one of the most exciting family events in Orange County. Join us for music, carnival games, a food court full of some of the best Food Trucks around, a petting zoo, train rides and so much more. There’s something for everyone!

Warren, who took pictures with tons of costumed kids, heralded the event as a successful means of bringing together church-members and the general community, alike. He took to Twitter on Wednesday night to comment about the monumental family event:

“It’s a sense of community. Not everyone is from Saddleback Church,” he said. “There are people here from all over Orange County. I’ve met pastors here from other churches. This is a kids’ night that’s safe and fun. Everyone is still a kid.”

Nov. 2, 2012 at 10:43amGood grief. The Blaze commenters are among the most self righteous, sanctimonious fun haters I’ve ever seen. If you don’t like Halloween, don’t celebrate it. If you’re so weak that you’re influenced by a 4 year old in a devil’s costume then “pluck out thine own eyes” as the verse goes. I see absolutely nothing wrong with Mr. Warren’s Blocktober. WHO CARES?! Halloween is fun. Costumes are fun. Whether you’re a drooling zombie for one night or Tinkerbell, it’s fun. My aunt & uncle prevented their kids from attending any form of Halloween Celebration due to it’s “evil roots in the occult” (yawn). My cousins felt left out and punished. Now that they’re adults, they celebrate with gusto. It seemed to have the opposite effect their parents intended.

Nov. 1, 2012 at 6:18pmWhy are believer’s so quick to judge a brother, and devour one another? We know we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. Where does this critical, mean spirit come from? It is not the Spirit of the living God, Who, while we were enemies of God. Christ died for us. We don’t have to agree with what we believe to be errors, but where is the love of Jesus in the hateful comments? They are God’s servants and are accountable only to Him, not you.

Nov. 1, 2012 at 6:54pmYou are right regarding the need of tolerance. While Warren’s initiative is commendable there is no need to create a new celebration but to return to the original one; the Catholic All Saints’ Day was instituted to honour all the martyrs of the Church, the christian saints, known and unknown.

Nov. 1, 2012 at 9:23pmAs a christian, I am commanded to “flee the very appearance of evil.” Ghosts, devils, witches, fairies, grim reaper…..the list goes on and on. Why do all of these ignorant people dress up like these godless and evil representations? What’s worse, is that they dress up their children in this garbage and think there is nothing wrong with it. How do Christians justify this craziness? Well Hanner, it’s just for the entertainment of the kids…..what a load of bull! God is looking for someone…..anyone to take a stand for him and actually obey his word. Hey Christian….You are an ambassador of Christ!!! Why don’t you try to act like it and quit dressing your kids up like a witch or demon. Quit celebrating a holiday that has origins in the Celtic occult practices. “Origin of Halloween” wikipedia….search out these things o ignorant sheep. Most images of today’s Halloween festivals are completely wicked and devilish. A lot of people don’t want to know the truth about these things, because they might actually have to take a stand for the Lord and “act different” than everyone else. Quit following the crowd……sheep.

I wouldn’t blow this up into a big deal. If you think it’s wrong to dress up then that’s fine, but don’t act like other people are doing something wrong by doing it. I personally never dressed up like that, nor if I ever have kids in the very far future would I dress them up like that. It doesn’t matter if it started out as something..it’s now simply a fun night where kids can dress up and get candy. No harm is being done.

My eyes were opened to a just, kind, and loving God many years after I quit the church – rather, I was disfellowshipped for asking questions. Much like the current administration, we were not allowed to question with boldness. Armstrong is dead. God judged him. We are each responsible for our own soul. May I suggest sticking with the subject matter, rather than preaching that same tripe to others.

Nov. 1, 2012 at 5:17pmThere is nothing wrong with Halloween itself. If you want to have a church carnival so that families have an alternative from kids going door to door and possibly running into weirdos then thats fine too. It’s still All Hallows Eve. It is still a night to dress up as someone different for a night and get more candy than you can stand. The world is full of monsters. Halloween on some level helps us all deal with that a little bit.
One house last night had a sign telling children to “go away. We are a christian household and don’t celebrate pagan rituals”. I don’t think that is a helpful approach.

Thank you, I’m well aware of that. I think people can choose to celebrate the birth of Christ whenever they choose–whether that is year ’round or during December. Not celebrating Christmas on December 25th is not un-Christian, by any means.
My family can’t think of any reason to “celebrate” or recognize halloween. If others choose to do so, that is their freedom.

Nov. 1, 2012 at 3:46pmOur choice, as Christians in this matter is very important. Should a Christian get involved in Halloween observances?
14 Do not become unevenly yoked with unbelievers. For what fellowship do righteousness and lawlessness have? Or what sharing does light have with darkness?15Further, what harmony is there between Christ and Be′li‧al? Or what portion does a faithful person have with an unbeliever?16And what agreement does God’s temple have with idols? For we are a temple of a living God; just as God said: “I shall reside among them and walk among [them], and I shall be their God, and they will be my people.”17“‘Therefore get out from among them, and separate yourselves,’ says Jehovah, ‘and quit touching the unclean thing’”; “‘and I will take YOU in.’”18“‘And I shall be a father to YOU, and YOU will be sons and daughters to me,’ says Jehovah the Almighty.”

Nov. 2, 2012 at 10:40amThose individuals that truly follow the Creator of the Universe, regardless of denomination do draw a line in the sand that they will not cross. You may whine all you want and call us nay sayers, pharisee, or what ever.
Deuteronomy 13. If a prophet (religious figure) arises among you, or a dreamer of dreams and gives you a sigh or a wonder, and the sign or wonder he fortells to you (does) come to pass, and if he says, let us go after other gods, god’s you have NOT known, and let us serve them. YOU shall NOT listen to the words of that prophet or to that dreamer of dreams. For the Lord (yahweh) your God (Eloheim) is testing you to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with your entire being.
With that said Halloween is a satanic “holy” day. We as believers have NO business messing with this stuff. Those of you who do, do so at your own risk.

Nov. 1, 2012 at 1:57pmSaddleback Church does many community outreach programs like this. It provides a great opportunity for church members to bring their non-christian, non-practicing friends and family members to an event to show them that church doesn’t have to be boring.
It also provides a chance to highlight some of the churches other activities, charities, small groups and resources that are available to community members. It helps get the entire community involved in solving issues on a local basis. One if them that is the churches food pantry. It provides thousands of pounds of food each week to local people and other churches. Their volunteer network is incredible.
Many are introduced to the needs of the community, the church and Christ through events like this. It may not be for everyone, but for those who prefer events like this it is a wonderful alternative to the rest of the time when we are bombarded by those who are trying to bring down the judo-christian culture rather than build it up.
