CBS Sources: Key Counterterrorism Task Force Not Convened During Benghazi Attack

The Obama administration neglected to convene its “top interagency counterterrorism resource: the Counterterrorism Security Group (CSG)” during the deadly terrorist attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi, sources tell CBS News.

Citing “top counterterrorism sources,” CBS reports there was internal frustration over the U.S. response to the coordinated attack in Libya on 9/11. The fiery assault that resulted in the deaths of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans lasted about seven hours.

“The CSG is the one group that’s supposed to know what resources every agency has. They know of multiple options and have the ability to coordinate counterterrorism assets across all the agencies…They were not allowed to do their job. They were not called upon,” a high-ranking U.S. official told CBS News. More from the report:

The circumstances of the attack, including the intelligence and security situation there, will be the subject of a Senate Intelligence Committee closed hearing on Nov. 15, with additional hearings to follow.

Counterterrorism sources and internal emails reviewed by CBS News express frustration that key responders were ready to deploy, but were not called upon to help in the attack.

CBS News has agreed not to quote directly from the emails, and to protect the identities of the sources who hold sensitive counterterrorism posts within the State Department, the US military and the Justice Department.

As to why the Counterterrorism Security Group was not convened, National Security Council Spokesman Tommy Vietor told CBS News “From the moment the President was briefed on the Benghazi attack, the response effort was handled by the most senior national security officials in governments. Members of the CSG were of course involved in these meetings and discussions to support their bosses.”

An additional senior counterterrorism official told CBS News that a hostage rescue team was told to gear up, then to stand down repeatedly throughout the night, “as officials seemed unable to make up their minds,” according to the report.

The U.S. military’s Africa Command was also formulating an action plan as the attack was happening, however, nothing ever came from it.

“Forces were positioned after the fact but not much good to those that needed it,” a military official told CBS News.

Referring to the top brass in the executive branch, an intelligence official said the “response process was isolated at the most senior level…My fellow counterterrorism professionals and I (were) not consulted.”

“The Administration also didn’t call on the only interagency, on-call, short notice team poised to respond to terrorist incidents worldwide: the Foreign Emergency Support Team (FEST). FEST’s seasoned experts leave within four hours of notification and can provide ‘the fastest assistance possible,’” the report states.

CBS News points out that FEST teams were sent in immediately after al-Qaeda bombings in U.S. embassies in East Africa in 1988and the USS Cole in 2000. Officials speculate that the CSG task force, if they were consulted, would have recommended FEST intervention.

“First a tactical response was needed,” a senior U.S. counterterrorism official said, “and while that was being implemented, the holistic response could have been developed and deployed within hours.”

    Who really needs the media anyway. I know glen says, “hey I’m not a journalist, go do the research”. I get it, and I do. He is what we need more of. I don’t see how these people sleep at night. Glen and others like him are true american patriots. This country is dying and we are so few……Keep up the good fight guys we can do this. It all starts in just 5 DAYS!!!!!!!!

      CBS at least is telling a partial truth but we all know that the final decision to protect our ambassador rests firmly in the president’s lap. Obama sacrificed the lives of 4 brave Americans for nothing more than politicial expediency. He was totally afraid of the reaction of terrorists and hard line Islamists. He was petrified that if we did anything, it would be seen as an assault on Islam, not just an action to protect Americans.

      Obama is a chicken hearted president, more concerned about foreigners than his own people. It is disgusting!

      OK lets see if I have this right….

      DID I GET THAT RIGHT? Somebody please tell me that I somehow got that wrong ????????

      Here is my take on this folks. They are claiming they didnt consult with the ENTIRE CSG but readily admit that part of the CSG was there HOWEVER if ALL of the CSG had been there things would have been different. So while The Joint Chiefs, who have always given the advice to the President, and SOME of the CSG were there and The President was there and General Ham had forces ready to deploy they couldnt find the “perfect plan” so they sat there and did nothing. Thats what I am getting folks. It sounds like the Quarterback was on the one yard line in the huddle and couldnt figure out what play to run so they just watched the clock run out and lost the game. It’s as simple as that folks.

      I personally think we are all more intelligent than to believe this BUT if this is the truth, well then folks they are just WAY to incompetent to run this country.

      Oh and I’m leaving alone the statement about “The CSG was not convened HOWEVER Members of the CSG were of course involved in meetings and discussions of the most senior national security officials in GOVERNMENTS. PLURAL.? I am hoping this was a typo. Because if more than one government was involved in the decision to save American lives or not, now we have a whole other story. So lets chalk that up to an error until we know different.

      I ask you to think about this one thing. Our taxes. What have they done with our taxes. The things that they have invented to keep nations under control let alone our own nation are not even totally known. If you choose to believe the stories, they have sound weapons that will turn your insides into jelly. The sound weapons they have shown us are nothing. You think they just GAVE AWAY THE STEALTH DRONE TO IRAN WITHOUT HAVING SOMETHING BETTER? The stealth bomber was originally a turbo prop back in the 50′s we just didnt know about it till much more recently. I watch TV programs where they couldnt make a round craft go straight up and down but somehow the Harrier can? The “black ops” are actually real. They actually tell us in movies that ” you dont think they actually pay $500.00 for a hammer and $1,000 for a toilet seat do you?”

      My opinion is that we had better be afraid OF WHAT WE DONT KNOW. But just remember, we paid for it. WE paid for our own subjugation. THINK about that.

      Now I am going just a little outside of the original story, if I may.
      Most of us have heard of Valerie Jarrett. It has been told over and over and over again that she is the REAL President. She has the real power. Or at the very least she has hold of the Presidents ear.

      This is my truth. IF Valerie Jarrett is actually the voice of the Obama Presidency she is in truth the least intelligent person who ever was an advisor to any President in history. Hell I would debate her and she wouldn’t have any idea what hit her, however she prefers to play in the background and let others suffer her failures.

      I am nobody, but Valerie Jarrett is less than that. She has failed on every plane. I don’t believe every IRANIAN is actually this stupid but it is obvious that she is.

      I think you are missing an important part of this story. There are two separate quotes by two different people in the article from CBS on The Blaze.

      First there is:

      “The CSG is the one group that’s supposed to know what resources every agency has. They were not called upon,” a high-ranking U.S. official told CBS News.”

      Then the second quote by someone different:

      “As to why the Counterterrorism Security Group was not convened, National Security Council Spokesman Tommy Vietor told CBS News “From the moment the President was briefed on the Benghazi attack, the response effort was handled by the most senior national security officials in governments. Members of the CSG were of course involved in these meetings and discussions to support their bosses.”

      So, I guess the question is . .who to believe . . .the high ranking US official claiming CSG was never contacted . . .or Mr. Vietor from the National Security Council.

      Based on Mr. Vietor’s comment, it sounds to me that the senior national security officials are the “members of the CSG bosses” and ultimately make the decisions. Thus, the fault of these 4 deaths lies directly at the President’s door step, since he is the most senior member in regards to our national security. So whether the CSG was contacted or not is a mute point.

      If Obama wins, and I’m praying he doesn’t, but if he wins the election I believe the republicans will hang their hat on this issue until they feel they have enough evidence to bring impeachment charges to the house. If the senate confirms the impeachment then, …gulp, …crazy Joe Biden will become the president.
      Americans! Please do not allow Obama the Socialist to be re-elected. Get out and vote for Romney and bring a friend or two with you to the polls. Talk to your family members, both close and distant. Discuss the facts and answer their questions. Convince them of the dangers we will face if Obama is re-elected.     This is much more than a cover up. The report says that senior officials did not make it known to others, or rather, did not inquire and request participation from those who would have taken care of the situation. Those in charge, if not Obama alone, did not want this incident to be resolved with our armed forces. They intentionally prevented any response team to rescue them. Our assets could have easily and quickly been used. This was a deliberate attempt to let the Benghazi attack go on, for some unknown, or soon to be disclosed, reason.

    And the “response” “effort” freaking stayed there, at the top. They were up to something, and didn’t want others to get involved, or didn’t want others to ruin their plans.

    This calls for charges of treason.

    Obama only wanted to be seen as a high level “killer”, and not associated with a cluster mess that could go badly. He is a coward, period. He is the true sunshine soldier. Osama was a “lookee me, how great I am,” he didn’t want any part of apossibly loosing situation.     Those sons of bitches watched them die – they sat there and watched them die – it is just what Bill Clinton said (re ben ladan) just think how bad it would have looked for him (Obama) – those sob sat in their staff chairs and watched them die and before the bodies had even been recovered they began to figure out how to spin the deaths until after the election – bet they drew straws to see who would “own up” first –you get enough people owning -up, owning-up looses any meaning. But you know what —to use Joe Biden’s( “we did not know”-bull ) favorite word – malarkey – even if you spread malarkey out, even if you cover it up . . . it is still malarkey and it still stinks.
    After the election watch for the truth to come out- everyone of those involved will start covering their own a/// remember America – they watched them die! Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Leon Panetta & crew watched while Americans being murdered and they DID NOTHING. They have lied from the start to cover their cowardly deed! Cowardice in a time of war is one offense that used to carry a serious penalty- but these Sobs will never see a moment of punishment (and worse yet will never feel a moment of guilt).

      These people did not uphold the oaths of office they swore to keep. They not only watched 4 Americans die, they blamed a stupid video for 2 weeks, and the snotnose liar-in-chief went before the UN and blamed it 6 times. These people are traitors, and why is a hearing not held until Nov 15? Those senators should be in the building pulling this all together right now. This is so evil and despicable to have an admin constantly covering up not only these 4 Americans deaths, but all those who died in fast and furious. I truly believe the east coast was hit with the wrath of G-d for this evil and pathetic admin moving arms to their muslim brotherhood to use against Israel. We have traitors living in the WH!!!!

      What Obama always forgets to mention, when it comes to Bin Laden, is that the request to attack was made 3 separate times, and only on the third occasion did Obama decide to take action. That tells me this, he didn’t want to take action but knew if he didn’t the US people would impeach his ass in a heartbeat. He didn’t get Bin Laden out of duty but out of fear of the american response.

      Now hes using it as a campaign point. But I give that victory and moment to Bush. He put the policies and teams in place that were hunting Bin Laden. When they found him, Obama had no option but to give the go ahead.

I wonder how many early voters that are decent American people and not Progressive/Communists who voted for the O wish they could take that vote back. Stop watching the main stream media.     “CBS News has agreed not to quote directly from the emails, and to protect the identities of the sources who hold sensitive counterterrorism posts within the State Department, the US military and the Justice Department.”

    They are trying but they know that direct quotes from these emails will be damning to Obama. They are about 5 weeks late but they need to keep reporting. Don’t be scared to do your jobs!

      They had to wait for the final Hollywood review of the YouTube video to establish actual causation. This was a very complex situation, you know…um…lots of bad guys and a few good guys.Very fluid.

      um…we never leave our folks behind…remember I killed Bin Laden.

      SO The CSG was not convened HOWEVER Members of the CSG were of course involved in meetings and discussions of the most senior national security officials in governments AND…..
      “Officials speculate that the CSG task force, if they were consulted, would have recommended FEST intervention.”

      DID I GET THAT RIGHT? THAT IS ABOUT THE MOST STUPID EXPLANATION I EVER HEARD!!!!!

      Somebody please tell me that I somehow got that wrong ????????

      I gotta tell you they think they are gonna pull the wool over our eyes with THIS stupid sheet? THE FACT IS that General Ham had forces ready to go in two (2) hours to at least help them while the “ultimate plan” was devised and they ordered General Ham to stand down and as a result they wound up letting them all die!

    This happened some 51 days ago and CBS is just now reporting something about Bengazi? Where have you people been? Where are your highly paid “investigative reporters”? When are you going to start doing your job?

    You know it’s not too late to begin an investigation into the background of obama and then letting the American People know who he really is and what he really stands for??? HA!
