Conservatives Skewer Obama for Comments at Wis. Rally: ‘Al Qaeda Has Been Decimated’
Even as new information continues to surface revealing that the Obama White House may be embroiled in a cover-up scandal regarding the terror attack in Benghazi that left four Americans dead, the president took to the campaign trail in Wisconsin Thursday morning and actually declared that “al Qaeda has been decimated.” Recall that the carnage in Libya was, according to experts, waged by al Qaeda or pro-al Qaeda affiliates like the militant group Ansar al Sharia, which even claimed credit for the attack.
The president made the ire-inducing remark during a campaign stop at Austin Straubel International Airport Thursday morning where he spoke to a crowd of some 2,600 people. Obama, wearing a flight-jacket, addressed Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, then touched on the economy but  highlighted what he framed as his accomplishments in foreign policy, including smiting Osama bin Laden and yes, “decimating al Qaeda.”
“The war in Afghanistan is winding down,” the president said. “al Qaeda has been decimated. Osama bin Laden is dead. So we made real progress these last four years, but Wisconsin, we know our work’s not done yet.”
Obama’s statement, for many conservatives, is the ultimate in hubris and they took to Twitter to convey as much. Consider the following tweets, courtesy of Twitchy:

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 2:39pmCorrect me if I’m wrong, but i believe ‘Decimated’ comes from the practice of a conqueror lining up those he defeated in battle, counting off 1-2-3-4…10 and killing every tenth man. It was a fear tactic to impress on the defeated and enslaved just how helpless they were.
I’m not sure Al Qaeda feels that sense of overwhelming dread and helplessness. and I’m not sure Obama is the victorious general.

It may be correct in this case, that Obama has reduced Al Qaida’s strength by 10%. Not exactly the kind of performance worth landing on the carrier for.

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 7:06pmIt was only very rarely used against the “losing side.” What “decimation” refers to was the practice of forcing a large group of soldiers to draw lots, from 1 to 10, and choosing one of those lots to be bludgeoned to death by the other nine. This was an act used to punish a group of soldiers for cowardice or for having lost a battle. Because any of the ten groups could have been chosen, it was meant to force the survivors to overcome their cowardice for the next battle, and the survivors were also given substandard food and forced to sleep outside of the Roman encampment (which, I assume, would expose them to the possibility of attack by spies, outlaws, and predatory animals).
I hate seeing popular culture destroy the actual meaning of this word, but it gives me a secret satisfaction knowing Obama is actually admitting to the American people and the world that he has absolutely failed to leave the country safer than it was when he took control four years ago. Through his misuse of the word he has described the situation that we are truly in.

Obama, when not campaigning, is always talking “lawyer.” Implying one thing while actually saying another and retaining deniability for future charges of dishonesty. Similarly, I was thinking this morning that it is likely that he “said” in response to the Benghazi attack that we need to ensure the security of every American involved, but what was the official directive of the Commander In Chief? Likely two very different things.
