The situation in New York City in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy is dire. Some have gone days without power, water or even food as the superstorm brought the nation’s busiest city to a standstill.
Just how bad is it? WNBC actually found New Yorkers dumpster diving behind a Key Food supermarket Thursday, searching for any remnants of food they could find.
WNBC reporter Jonathan Vigliotti said people are “so hungry they literally pried open this dumpster — you see that door open right now — and they are literally picking through for whatever they can take home with themselves.”
“We’ve seen everyone here from the elderly, to families with children, literally up on top of this,” he added.

Nov. 1, 2012 at 7:08pmI am not trying to be a cruel person but you tell me we have a 100 mile wide huricane comming at me with the lowest barometric pressure ever measure at that latitude and I have food for 2 weeks in 3 large coolers that float all chained togeather. Either that or I start hitch hiking the hell out of there. If I had been in Jersey left the morning before the storm, I could have been in Virginia beach the next morning where there is plenty of food and water. People just dont think ahead and it’s nobody’s fault but their own. Guess it depends on how badly you DONT want to eat out of a dumpster or get pulled out to sea and eaten by fish. If you like living THINK AHEAD.

Stossel went over how miserably ’ FEMA-FAILED’ in handling Katrina.. First there was plenty of notice to get out there, buy some food that can be eaten without being cooked (in case they loose the power), stock up on water, and if you own a car, maybe fill a few 5 gallon cans. Whatever happened to personal responsibility? After Obummer got into power, I started stock piling everything needed in case there is ………… (you fill this part in), and now I am good for a minimum of 9 months of being totally self sufficient. The whinners need to get off their ass and instead of dumpster diving which I can’t believe is happening at all – pull up their boot straps and manage on their own. Nov. 1, 2012 at 8:42pmWhen our power went out on the West coast last year, I finally broke down and got a generator that weekend and I live in sunny Socal. A earthquake here will be worse than any storm. The roads will be fractured, powerlines cut, gas lines busted, food lines cut. It will take months if not years for Socal to get over what they believe is on our horizon…a dreaded 8.0 or higher. Be prepped up at all times, that goes for carry bags for your cars with nice get home items packed in a bag, walking shoes too. People don’t think about the earthquake which strike out of the blue like the one last year on the East coast. Minor damage on that one, what about something that cuts people off during a work day rush hour?
That quake was punctuated with Irene up the East coast last year, then an epic snow storm and now this! Can’t people see that things are not getting better, they are getting worse. This socalled Storm of the century as the media calls it, is meant as, don’t worry, we won’t see anything like it again for hundred years….yea right!

Nov. 2, 2012 at 7:55amEasy ideal fix in that a little self responsibility goes a way however….
As for those in the dumpsters, sad situation however every common culture has this. For many in the “3rd world countries”, this is a daily experience. The sad probable fact is this will spread from neighborhood to neighborhood.
People will become more daring as the situation gets dire (for basic substenance). Don’t think people will remain in their own ‘hood because that simply won’t happen. In a couple days, if food doesn’t get to the people, you’ll hear and probably see migrations of people looting and stealing to survive.
Mark my words, this is a daily ritual for some in the world. For those of you who are callous to stay the obvious, you fail to realize many of these people live “stacked” so there’s minimal space to store and live the way many do outside a large metropolitan area.
BOTTOM LINE: Sources will run out and be short for millions who live on check to check subsities. They’ll gonna recall Obama’s promise to care for them and when that doesn’t happen, they’ll probably be pisst off and want to take it out against the govt…. Opps, too late, voting will be over come 96 hours

Nov. 1, 2012 at 6:17pmCompare it with the Tohoku quake and tsunami. None of this happened in Japan and they were hit out of the blue without any chance to prepare and the death and devastation was astronomically higher than this little wind. Sure, in some shelters food became scarce, but unlike in NY, where people apparently wait for the nanny state to get stuff done and have zero feeling for responsibility (even though they knew it was coming for days), in the wake of the quake and tsunami basically all of Japan stood up and helped in whatever way was possible. People were fed, sheltered and supplied.
Many of Japan’s biggest stars pulled their weight and helped, even on site with the evacuees.
Now where is Hollywood in this? Where are all the self-important American stars? Anyone of them going to lift a finger? Oh wait, they’re too busy whining about Romney and global warming.

Nov. 1, 2012 at 7:30pmtotally agree. if you live in an area almost totally surrounded by water, and they are calling for the worst storm in the entire history of all recorded storm-dom to hit you, isn’t it pretty obvious that you better either get the hell out of the way or at least make preparations? My goodness, I live in the middle of PA, surrounded by no bodies of water, and everyone I know was stockpiling & preparing like it was the end of the world! Yet the people who really should have been preparing didn’t… too busy relying on gov’t. See, that’s the problem. People with the attitude of “oh, govt will take care of me should anything ever happen, so i don’t need to prepare or stockpile food and supplies or take any personal responsibility and do what I need to do. Why the hell not? good old govt is gonna take care of me. i’m just gonna go on living my jolly old life”… then WHAM! something like Sandy comes thru, and they wonder why they’re starving…. doesn’t make sense to me. people are so stupid.

Nov. 2, 2012 at 10:06amKaydeebeau, Safewrite here – now living in SC. I used to live in NY but am originally from Western PA.
Let me tell you a little about the entitlement mindset in NYC. I resided on Long Island, and commuted to NYC. Have you seen Wednesday’s and Thursday’s Sandy aftermath pics? If you take a look at the pictures of downed trees on Long Island, unless they are surrounded by caution tape because of downed power lines, the trees have all been dragged out of the road by residents and are being cut up for firewood or to be hauled away.
In NYC the fallen trees still sit there, and the residents are waiting for a government agency to remove them. In my estimation New York City dwellers no longer have any initiative. Except the looters.
