If You Don’t Like Gov’t Bureaucracy, Don’t Read This Story About a Chinese Restaurant Trying to Help Sandy Victims
This article by Henry Blodget originally appeared on Business Insider.
–
Our Managing Editor [at Business Insider], Jessica Liebman, was driving from Manhattan to Brooklyn yesterday evening when she saw something that will make anyone who has ever been frustrated by government bureaucrats tear their hair out.
Somewhere in lower Manhattan, where the power has been out for three days, restaurants and stores are closed, perishable food is going bad, and there’s little to eat, Jess came upon the following:
While in a traffic standstill on a pitch black corner in Chinatown, we saw an NYC food inspector bust down the door of a Chinese restaurant that was serving food to dozens of people even though they had no power and no running water. It was pitch black, and all these people were eating from a huge buffet…
I knew it was a food inspector because the guy was wearing a jacket that said “Department of Health” in big white letters on the back of it. He had a big flashlight and a headlamp. When he went into the restaurant with his two sources of light, you could see that there were little candles everywhere and people huddled at tables.
The restaurant was a tiny hole in the wall spot, with a yellow awning that said they served dumplings for $4. It had a “C” in the last inspection — the NYC health inspection grade was taped to the door.
What happened next? From what I could tell, he was shining his flashlight all around (which is how I saw that there was a buffet of food) and right before we pulled away I saw him inspect a huge pot of soup that was near the door.
From the moment he walked in, it was clear that he wasn’t letting anyone leave the restaurant after that.
A business without power going the extra mile to keep its doors open and help the community in a time of need.
Got to put a stop to that immediately!

Will we just vanish or will we insist on our freedoms by voting out immoral leaders. This is a morality issue. Satan is the deceiver, the murderer, the lier, and represents death to mankind. God represents life, freedom, happiness, and love. YOU WILL CHOSE WITH YOUR VOTE AND ACTIONS.

As our country becomes more dilluted with people who either do not care what it means to assimilate and become an American or are trying to destroy America it is becoming quite clear we need to change directions and i’m not sure there are enough red blooded Americans left to do that. But we must try.

Posted on November 2, 2012 at 1:06pmAre health inspectors sworn police officers in NYC? If not, they have no authority to detain anyone who desires the leave. Before resorting to physical force, you need to establish that his intent is to make you stay or prevent you from leaving. Once that’s established, it’s unlawful restraint (minimum) to kidnapping if he forces you to go somewhere against your will. From there on, it’s lawful resistance to a crime. I’m sure all the patrons will agree with you that said inspector “tripped over a chair” in the dark.

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 12:34pmStory seems fishy as written, but I don’t doubt the intent (whether its true or not)…
The Health guy SHOULD be there (just in case) as with no power, you need to make sure that this place doesn’t hurt people by trying to help them…. (They might have bad ingredients that they may be unaware of)… But As long as everything is up to snuff, then this guy should do his inspection and then leave without doing anything…
In times like that (in catastrophe situations) people will do strange things to keep their bellies full, and you need to make sure this place isn’t serving up Kung-Pow Sewer Rat….
As long as he didn’t shut the place down (which the article doesn’t mention) who cares that the guy is there… Maybe he was using his flashlight to see if there was anything HE would eat… Who knows…

The health inspector didn’t need to be there. As the article points out, power has been gone for 3 days. Food is going to start going bad (perishable food anyway). For all we know, the restaurant had some butane or propane stoves to cook the food with. Hot soup probably isn’t going to kill anyone.

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 2:05pmDepends on what was in the soup. Chicken stock will last a long time. So will dry ingredients. But all of it needs to be used at a certain point. Obviously fish, beef, and chicken have probably gone bad, unless they were all freeze dried before hand. In that case, they just needed to be rehydrated.
I think the large point is that it’s a disaster and we don’t need need “Health Inspectors” checking out places right now. Unless he’s going to come in and help feed the people, he/she needs to leave.

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 1:21pmHey Calm…currently there is absolutely no scientific evidence that GMO food is harmful to you. There are a few studies that seem to indicate that they could be problematic but nothing absolute. That being said, all we’re asking for in California is the right to know what we’re eating. I don’t trust that GMO food is absolutely harmless. I would hate for the regulators to find out a few years down the road that this stuff is dangerous to consume. There is an endless list of drugs that were once approved because they seemed to be safe and effective when, in fact, they were quite dangerous to use and pulled off the market. Much of the world requires a simple statement that the food contains GMO products. That would allow consumers to choose whether to purchase and consume or not.
The opposition to the GMO labeling in the USA are concerned that the citizenry, once informed, may choose to NOT consume this stuff and a LOT of $$$ goes down the drain. Having worked for large food companies in my lifetime, I would have to say tough luck…they probably knew that the American public won’t accept this stuff once they know what it is.

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 7:11pmWineguy: I am with Jedi Knight on this one. Prop 37 only paints the scarlet letter of shame on GMO’s (without scientific basis) while allowing “organic” farmers blessed by Big Karma to continue using carcinogenic chemicals as pesticides and herbicides. Hippies under the delusion that “natural” means “safe” have pushed for this; poisons derived from plant sources are still poisons and if they don’t feel you have a “right to know” what they use, they lose that moral high ground.
@Warmunger: You should know that the legislation in Europe is based on politics and economics, and are not founded on evidence that GMO’s are harmful to human health or damaging to the environment.

A Chinese eatery, with its various meats, soups, sauces, preparing food, without heat, light, and a way to keep the food hot could pose a real health hazard. It’s not like you have a grill and are cooking steaks.

DontStopBelieving
Posted on November 1, 2012 at 1:36pmHoly bleepin’ bleep….DESERVED??? People DESERVED to die, to lose their homes, DESERVED? Maybe God should send some of this your way. Where do you get off on saying something like that? No one DESERVES to be put through what these people are going through, no one. Perhaps you should pray that God gives you a brain.

Do health inspectors have the power of arrest and detention? Some how I don’t think so. False arrest, kidnapping, false imprisonment, impersonating a police officer, likely assault.

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 11:47amI guess the Health inspectors have more police powers than the police in NYC. Don’t be serving large drinks or they might put a cap in your @ss.

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 11:50amthe story is poorly written, why would a door to a open establishment have to be kicked in? How could they tell from sitting in a car on the street that the inspector was not going to let anyone leave?
