Intelligence Officials Provide New Detailed Timeline for Libya Attack
WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — CIA security officers went to the aid of State Department staff less than 25 minutes after they got the first call for help during the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, U.S. intelligence officials said Thursday as they laid out a detailed timeline of the CIA’s immediate response to the attack from its annex less than a mile from the diplomatic mission.
The attack on the 11th anniversary of 9/11 by what is now suspected to be a group of al-Qaida-linked militants killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.
The timeline was offered just days before the presidential election in a clear effort to refute recent news reports that said the CIA told its personnel to “stand down” rather than go to the consulate to help repel the attackers.
The officials told reporters that when the CIA annex received a call saying the consulate was under attack, about half a dozen members of a CIA security team tried to get heavy weapons and other assistance from the Libyans. But when none was available, they went ahead with the rescue attempt. The officials said that at no point was the team told to wait.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to provide intelligence information publicly.
The Obama administration’s response to the attack on the consulate has been challenged by Republicans in Congress and elsewhere, questioning whether enough military and other support was requested and received. And it has become an issue in the election, with President Barack Obama’s Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, and GOP lawmakers accusing the White House of misleading Americans about the nature of the attack.
CNN’s Suzanne Kelly, who was personally briefed on the CIA timeline, reports:
Initial descriptions of the attack suggested that it may have been linked to a protest over an American-made anti-Muslim film.
On Thursday, intelligence officials said they had early information that the attackers had ties to al-Qaida-linked groups, but did not make it public immediately because it was based on classified intelligence. And they said the early public comments about the attack and its genesis were cautious and limited, as they routinely are in such incidents.
They added that while intelligence officials indicated early on that extremists were involved in the assault, only later were officials able to confirm that the attack was not generated by a protest over the film.
Here is the timeline given by CIA officials, which provides a minute-by-minute look at how the security teams’ response played out (All times are local for Benghazi):
- 9:40 p.m. The CIA annex receives its first call that the consulate has come under attack.
- Less than 25 minutes later, the security team leaves the annex en route to the consulate.
- Over the next 25 minutes, team members approach the compound and attempt to get heavy weapons. When they cannot secure heavy weapons, they make their way onto the compound itself in the face of enemy fire.
- 11:11 p.m. A Defense Department surveillance drone – an unarmed Predator – that had been requested arrives over the consulate compound.
- 11:30 p.m. All U.S. personnel have departed the consulate except for Stevens, who is missing. The vehicles come under fire as they leave the facility.
- Over the next 90 minutes, the CIA annex comes under sporadic fire from small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. The security team returns fire, dispersing the attackers.
- Around 1 a.m., a team of additional security personnel from Tripoli lands at the Benghazi airport and attempts to find a ride into town. Upon learning that Stevens is missing and that the situation at the CIA annex has calmed, the team focuses on locating Stevens and obtaining information about the security situation at the hospital.
- Before dawn, the team at the airport finally manages to secure transportation and armed escort. Having learned that Stevens is almost certainly dead and that the security situation at the hospital is uncertain, the team heads to the CIA annex to assist with the evacuation.
- 5:15 a.m. The team arrives at the CIA annex, with Libyan support, just before mortar rounds begin to hit the facility. Two security officers are killed when they take direct mortar fire while engaging the attackers. The attack lasts only 11 minutes before dissipating.
- Less than an hour later, a heavily armed Libyan military unit arrives at the CIA annex to help evacuate all U.S. personnel and takes them to the airport.

They send in a security team without transport or arms?!! Did this say the first “security team” attempted to get heavy weapons? From whom? The terrorists? This timeline makes me even angrier. If they thought it would help, they have collective brain tumors.

Bad guys, monitoring US transmissions 24/7, watch this play out.
It dawns on them a target of opportunity is developing, alerted to it by the US Govt itself.
Bad guys start to plan.
Consulate picks up on rumors, sends out higher urgency emails.
Still no action by State Dept, and communicated as such.
Bad guys have their target, 9/11 arrives.
The video is a coincidence sent by the gods; the operation had been planned weeks in advance.

1) BEFORE. Aug 16th the Sec of State was informed the consulate could not withstand an attack. Also, 10 terrorist groups were growning and training in Benghazi. They then requested additional support and a stronger building. They should have left the building before 9/11
2) DURING. No military leader wants another Tehran like incident on his record. They should have been prepared before 9/11
3) AFTER. Who came up with the flimsy video excuse? What happened to the investigation of the possibility of a Stevens kidnap plot to exchange him for the blind sheik, coop’ed thru the Muslim Brotherhood? .

A rep from Jarrett office was in today. She gave us a finish line pep talk and then afterwards, heard her saying how Jarrett is very excited about a 2nd term agenda and a big part of that agenda is to punish everyone who opposed them during the first term and the campaign. Strange that everything was “Ms. Jarrett wants this, and Ms. Jarrett is looking forward to that”. You hardly heard Obama’s name mentioned by her which I guess reinforces what people are saying. Valerie Jarrett really is the power in the White House. I know that when her representative showed up it was like royalty was visiting. Maybe there are going to be some riots in Chicago, Detroit, Oakland, Cleveland, Dearborn, etc, but I don’t think it will last. The morons are going to burn their own neighborhoods…
But you know, at this point is pretty clear Barry’s and his team lack of the proper skills for planning and then making the plan come together. Look the past three years: Every one of their evil plans went south, if not complete, then partially. I mean, they thought they were going to get away with it, but they didn’t at the end: Occupy, Solyndra, Benghazi, Fast & Furious, Putin, etc. They overestimate their skills and intelligence, especially Valerie Jarret, but they are just Chicago thugs with power. Not very bright, and It’s not me saying this, it’s the outcome of their deeds.
They are underestimating the rest of you, and I think they are very wrong….their surprise is going to be overwhelmingly huge!!

You are truly deluded. The whitehouse has been slow to release information, but what do you expect from a major event like this? There’s an investigation, intelligence people on the ground, and time is needed for an accurate timeline to be released so that no information or assets are put in jeopardy. Now for the first time, the CIA, the National Security Council, and Senior Intelligence officials in the white house release the first official account of the events and we have our answers. How could you say this is “just another story”? This is the first solid information about the attack to date, despite the multitude of unconfirmed leaks from veiled sources that Fox news keeps putting out that clearly contradict ACTUAL intelligence officials. They refuse to release their sources by the way, giving absolutely zero validity to their attacks, as well as the NSC denying these allegations. I think I’ll believe the guys that were actually there. This is the most reliable information so far and at this point, if people continue to believe unsubstantiated claims made by conservative pundits over legit CIA statements, than they’re just barking in an echo chamber.

By your statement, this timeline release is fact, and proves the government took action in a timely manner? Cool.
There was a total of 8hr 20min between the CIA annex (and president) becoming aware of the attack, and backup from the Tripoli Embassy arriving, unarmed and without vehicles. Are we to believe that an 8hr 20min response, by unarmed civilians is a suitable one?
As has already been disclosed, there were armed military helicopters, drones, and personnel within 20 mins and 1hr of the consulate respectively, and instead the president decided to wait and let the CIA agents flying coach handle it?
Even if what you state is true, which again, is in no way proof contrary to the accusations placed at the feet of this administration, do you honestly think this exonerates the government?
Issues the people take with this:
1. The lead security agent in Benghazi requested and was denied additional security forces just days before the attack.
2. Benghazi had been targeted with a bomb, and terrorists claimed responsibility within 2 hrs yet administration blamed a video.
3. Administration blamed the video for 2 weeks, then did a 180 and denied ever blaming the video
4. Africon general gave command for his men to respond. told to stand down by commander in chief, refused, and was relieved of command 1m later.
5. it took 2 months for any official information to be released. said information is lacking.

Posted on November 2, 2012 at 11:55amThe information in the CNN timeline did not originate from CNN, rather from the original report. They are simply the news organization The Blaze is taking news information from and crediting, hence the reference. This report, the very first comprehensive timeline of the events so far, was originally released by the CIA and the National Security Council. Unlike the allegations and “leaks” produced by Fox news these last few weeks, this is the first real piece of credible information to date. Fox news has led the way in unconfirmed leaks from sources whom they refuse to reveal, giving them no validity especially now that a real report is now public, compiled by our guys (CIA & FBI intelligence gatherers) on the ground. Again, the info is not from CNN originally but from the real report. You guys can’t really be this foolish.

Posted on November 2, 2012 at 12:44amJust the same as CNN revealed the name of their sources from within the CIA that provided that strangely convenient time line?
Truth be told, whoever comes forward with information here, places their fate in the hands of the public. If the public acts properly, the current administration is impeached, and the whistle-blower is hailed a hero. If the public fails to act, as is likely with how mainstream media constantly proves its support of Obama, and loves to overlook anti-Obama evidence (true or false), the whistle-blower ends up in jail.
I for one, will not just simply see a piece of information and accept is as fact.
Until the president, and his administration provide factual information that they did indeed order action, and that someone else failed to take action, I lay blame for this entire event squarely at the feet of the president.
Either he failed to order support, ordered the support stand down, or he ordered support and the military higher-ups ignored him.
As per that time line:
- 9:40 p.m. The CIA annex receives its first call that the consulate has come under attack. (The whitehouse situation room were also informed at this time, as is protocol)
5:15-6:15 a.m. The backup arrived and evacuated the personnel. 8hrs and 20 minutes for the whitehouse to make an order for military air support, military ground support, none was provided. Instead the trippoli consulate sent its own security staff to assist the CIA annex with evacuation.
8hr 20m.

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 10:40pmThere is a big list of people to be impeached with that fraud in chief. No we would end up with John Boehner as president. I would rather have Romney. But I want Obama exposed for ALL he has done against the country and I am afraid if he is out of office it will never happen and the libs will not learn their lesson.

If Obama wins this election…a very large part of me feels that the folks who voted for him will be soooo very sorry when our country is turned upside down. Is the UK working out for them? How about all the other Gov’t top-heavy countries?
Maybe Obama winning the election (a big if) is what it takes to wake up the other half of the country…so be it. However, perhaps there won’t be anymore elections if Obama wins? I suppose Hollywood will give up their fortunes? Nope…there will always be “the Elite”. Just changes hands.
Maybe the unions will finally realize that nobody can afford to buy any of their products and services anymore. Then they will be dumpster-diving just like the rest of us. My husband is a union man and the union has not found him a job since Obama got elected. So hubby is working in the oil fields on a job he found himself. Unions suck!

Posted on November 2, 2012 at 11:45amThis is the most solid info on the events that night that have come to light so far. You all are deluded if you trust the “leaks” by Fox news, all by veiled sources whom they refuse to reveal, over a confirmed report by both the CIA, the National Security Council, and White house senior intelligence officials. If you honestly believe unsubstantiated allegations over the intelligence of our guys on the ground, then you have no basis for deciphering info whatsoever. Use your brains.
