As the U.S. Mission in Benghazi and a close-by CIA annex were overrun by heavily armed terrorists on Sept. 11, the Americans inside severely outnumbered, the State Department neglected to request any type of military backup, two senior U.S. officials “familiar with the details of military planning” told The Daily Beast.

The truth about what really happened in Benghazi is slowly seeping through the mainstream media blackout and stonewalling efforts from the Obama administration. Currently, Congress and Americans everywhere are demanding answers as to why the U.S. government seemingly didn’t lift a finger to provide military backup to the four Americans in Benghazi who faced certain death in the attack, though there are countless other questions that remain unanswered.

Fox News reported that multiple requests from CIA officers for air support during the attack were ignored and operatives were told to “stand down.”

Per The Daily Beast’s Eli Lake:

It’s unlikely any outside military team could have arrived in Benghazi quickly enough to save Ambassador Chris Stevens or his colleague Sean Smith, both of whom died from smoke inhalation after a band of more than 100 men overran the U.S. mission at around 9:30 p.m. that evening and set the buildings inside ablaze.

But military backup may have made a difference at around five the following morning, when a second wave of attackers assaulted the CIA annex where embassy personnel had taken refuge. It was during this second wave of attacks that two ex-SEALs working for the CIA’s security teams—Glenn Doherty and Tyrone Woods—were killed in a mortar strike.

Normally it would be the job of the U.S. ambassador on location to request a military response. But Stevens likely died in the first two hours of the attack. The responsibility for requesting military backup would then have fallen to the deputy chief of mission at Benghazi or officials at the State Department in Washington.

“The State Department is responsible for assessing security at its diplomatic installations and for requesting support from other government agencies if they need it…There was no request from the Department of State to intervene militarily on the night of the attack,”  a senior U.S. Defense official told the website.

The official reiterated what other defense officials and military personnel have already confirmed: that the president of the United States is ultimately responsible for deciding whether to send U.S. military personnel into combat.

Roughly 90 minutes after the attack began, Obama reportedly met with the National Security Council to discuss the government’s options. At the meeting, NSC spokesman Tommy Vietor says Obama ”ordered Secretary Panetta and Chairman Dempsey to begin moving assets into the region to prepare for a range of contingencies,” according to The Daily Beast.

“According to the senior Defense Department official, those assets included a special operations team from central Europe to be staged at the Sigonella Naval Air Station in Italy and other small teams of Marines deployed at U.S. Naval bases known as FAST platoons. (These details were first reported by Fox News.) By the time the special operations team and the Marines were prepared to go forward with the rescue mission, however, the first wave of the attack was over,” the report states.

Philippe Reines, a spokesman for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, said “Everyone in the U.S. government and at every agency immediately had the exact same goal of finding a way to help them.”

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last week that critics of the government’s handling of the Benghazi attack were taking part in “Monday morning quarterbacking.” He also said the military did not have enough “real-time information about what’s taking place” to send in military backup.

But The Daily Beast claims three U.S. Defense and intelligence officials confirmed that a surveillance drone was overhead during the attack while staffers were evacuated from the U.S. Mission to the CIA annex. The drone was not there when the attack began.

Additionally, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) has now said on three separate occasions, one in an interview with The Daily Beast, that Gen. Carter Ham, former U.S. commander of Africa Command, told him personally that he received no orders to engage the attackers and save the Americans trapped inside. Chaffetz also told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren on Wednesday that Ambassador Stevens called out for help as the attack began.

    Panetta knew full well what was happening. When General Carter Ham requested permission to send a unit to the rescue he was ordered to “step down”. When he refused and said he was going in anyway. He was immediately relieved of his command. Suddenly, he is now retired – but of course this was coming since July per the Dept of Defense. If this is a rouge we need more of them.

    When Rear Admiral Charles M. Gaouette, requested permission to send in planes from his aircraft carrier he was told to step down. When he questioned this he was later brought up on charges of inappropriate leadership. He is now back in Washington State pending investigation of the charges.

    General Ham may have broke rules by saying he was going in anyway but Rear Admiral Gaouette only questioned. He obeyed command. If either of these true patriots had gone thru with the rescue how many men would have been save?

    Both these men are being punished for standing by what they had been trained and did their entire careers. Only Panetta or Obama could give those orders.

    The thing that really bothers me – why is the conservative media keeping this quiet? America needs to know. If the conservative media does not bring it to light it will never be told.

    Even if the Ambassador and the Seal Team members had never requested help the Major Function of the President of the United States is to Protect America, American Territory and the American People. Also obama KNEW that there was a Major Attack going on and that Americans were in Danger, yet obama didn’t act to carry out his Primary Funciton as President, he completely failed the “3:00 AM” phone call. We all know why, obama was thinking like a politician not a President.
    As far as I’m concerned and I’m sure the vast Majority of Americans are with me, this person should Resign Immediately as this is not going to Go Away.
    This Act of Cowardice I’m sure will be immortilized in song like the “Shores of Tripoli” in the Marines Hymn and the Movie starring John Payne. This is not going away, this is What obama Will Be Remembered For. “The Coward of Benghazi” will Forever be associated with obama, the First Black President.

    Resign or be Impeached.

      I’m not gonna lie. I didn’t read this story HOWEVER I have been writing quite a few of them over at before it’s news. If fact I have the number one story over there right now so I have an idea of the events that took place that night.

      The FIRST thing I noticed of course was the title, “State Department Never Requested Military Backup in Benghazi”. Well the ambassador only got one call out and it wasn’t to the State Department. The next communication was from the Seals at the CIA compound. They didnt contact the State Department either, They sent cables to CIA and the Pentagon. From there it would have gone straight to the President. So PLEASE tell me when the State Department would have requested Military Backup DURING the attack. That would have been Hillary. She would have played the part of an advisor. The Joint Chiefs and Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta, also would have been advisors. OBAMA would have called the shots. Hillary wouldn’t have had to request a damn thing!

      Not that I like her.

    This just out from Washington:

    President Obama has said that the benghzio Attacked had never happened. It was just a drill to see how the American People would react if they thought that al-quida had not been previously crushed by me. He went on to say that Stevens and the other 3 were on vacation on a small island..

    After Obama left the stage, it was reported the island they were on was destroyed by a tilde wave. A search for the bodies is in progress.

    How in the world can a sitting President, regardless of political affiliation, NOT address the nation and explain exactly what happened to create this fiasco!
    It’s a bit hard to swallow that politics is taking precedence over the death of 4 Americans and the ultimate truth surrounding this tragedy, but the silence coming from the White House is very damning!
    We, and especially the families of those killed, deserve the truth…and before November 6th!!

      Im not a conspiracy person, but I heard one that is compelling. Thereason to order the stand down was this Lybia ambassador was supposed to be kidnapped not killed, thus setting the stage for another Obama super story of rescue and thus securing a news story to carry him through the elections. The whole Bengazi situation got out of control, thus plan B trot out the u tube video story. I dont think this administration thought this would be as explosive as it has become. The media was supposed to be completely blackdout. The internet and other news media have not toed the line. Has anyone else heard this? Am I just too suspicious?

    I believe they should have sent someone even if the few people at the compound had miraculously turned the tide!!!!!!! What on earth is going on here? It just gets worse and worse. Once the attack began AND they KNEW it, help should have been put into place AND SENT!!!!

      This is all B.S. Our military is not this incompetent and it’s pathetic all the excuses coming out of Washington. It honestly makes me sick. I was going to join the National Guard last year but had a bad feeling about it because of the current administration. I can see now why I had that feeling. This administration is using the entire military as dispensable assets for political reasons. I feel bad for any soldier trying to defend this country knowing they’re also under the gun of the very government they took an oath to protect.

    HOW then, did the USA muster troops to bail out BRIT AMBASSADOR when his convoy was attacked in Benghazi in TWENTY MINUTES in JUNE OF 2012.

    WHY then, wasn’t the USA prepared. DUH. It was 9/11. THEY had received several warnings.

      BUT..BUT.. remember that Obama said that HE killed Osama and that al Qaeda ” was on the run.” Surely that would mean that anybody protesting in Libya was a FRIEND of America’s , right ? How would our president and our State Department be expected to prepare for a 9/11 assault ? HUH? HUH? And, of course the Left wing Lap Dog media is not interested in those dead guys.     Regardless of whether the State Department requested anything or not, the president was aware of the situation and does not need the State Departments permission to deploy federal assets. Looks like Obama is throwing the SecState and the whole department under the bus to cover his sorry behind. Perhaps he should have asked Secretary Clinton why she was not requesting assistance?

      He always likes to play the Commander in Chief card with regards to bin Laden .. he is responsible .. no matter who else knew .. WE KNOW HE KNEW! He had to be notified when an Ambassador is under attack .. it is protocol .. and he was in the White House. … he knew. Time to put on his big boy panties for the first time in his life AND MAN UP! Then resign.
