Watch Live: Congressional Hearing on IRS Scandal
Live BlazeCast at 2pm ET: All the fireworks from the IRS Hearing!
This Is Bloomberg Businessweek’s Hurricane Sandy Cover
With superstorm Hurricane Sandy devastating much of the East Coast — namely densely populated areas of New York and New Jersey — global warming has made its way back into the political forefront. Although it wasn’t much of a major issue during this 2012 Presidential Election, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg endorsed Democratic candidate Barack Obama Thursday, he said, because of climate change. GOP candidate Mitt Romney was heckled about climate change and its relationship to the storm. And Bloomberg’s Businessweek made a very loud statement about global warming and its connection to Hurricane Sandy on its cover.

(Image: Bloomberg)
Assistant managing editor and writerΒ Paul Barrett leads the online edition of the article writing that heΒ recognizes “itβs unsophisticated to blame any given storm on climate change.” Making a distinction, Barrett calls up experts in the field saying that while the storm would happen regardless of climate change or not, they believe Sandy was made stronger because of global warming factors.
Barrett goes on to call up studies detailing financial implications of natural disasters and predicting their rise. Climate denialism, he says is “both shortsighted and dangerous,” and extreme storms like Sandy, the U.S. can’t afford. The solution: “To limit the costs of climate-related disasters, both politicians and the public need to accept how much theyβre helping to cause them.” Barratt suggested carbon taxing as an idea that “must remain a part of the national debate” to help mitigate the effects of man-made global warming.
The fact still remains though that the science is still out when it comes to the relationship between climate change and its influence on hurricanes. Still,Β editor Josh TyrangielΒ tweeted about the cover:Β

The New York Times’ Justin Gillis wrote in an article about climate change and Sandy earlier this week that scientists “simply do not know for sure if the storm was caused or made worse by human-induced global warming.” Here are a couple quotes Gillis included about this uncertainty from scientists:
βMy profession hasnβt done its homework,β saidΒ Kerry A. Emanuel, a climate scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. βI think thereβs going to be a ton of papers that come out of this, but itβs going to take a couple of years.β
[...]
βMy view is that a lot of this is chance,β [NOAA scientist Kevin Trenberth] said. βA hybrid storm is certainly one which is always in the cards, and itβs one weβve always worried about.β
Naturally, the “stupid” — which are most likely those considered “climate deniers” — have a response. A well-known “climate denier” Anthony Watts posted on his blog Watt’s Up With That this response:

Anthony Watts’ modification of the Bloomberg cover. (Image: Watts Up With That)
Although scientists would agree that warmer ocean temperatures could fuel more powerful hurricanes — some would say the ocean temperatures this year are warmer as a result of man-made climate change — Eric Berger, the science blogger for the Houston Chronicle, wrote in Sandy’s case that its strength may be related to other factors though (Editor’s note: emphasis added):
[...] the recent strengthening of Hurricane Sandy is attributable, in large measure, to baroclinic forcing. This is a technical term that represents the collision of very warm air (Sandy) with very cold air (a strong cold front moving southeast from Canada). The collision of these air masses is providing energy to Sandy.
In other words, cold air is in some sense allowing Sandy to strengthen.Β Cold air.
As for concerns for more frequent hurricanes, even the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states in its global warming predictions that “thereΒ isΒ less confidenceΒ in projections of the frequency of hurricanes, but the global frequency of tropical hurricanes is likely to decrease or remain essentially unchanged.“
Berger, for example, supports the idea that the climate is warming and is in turn changing the weather, but still states “it is a big stretch to go from there to blaming Sandy on climate change. Itβs a stretch that is just not supported by science at this time.”
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isnβt really about controlling guns at all; itβs about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

Posted on November 2, 2012 at 12:45amWe all know who is stupid….those like Mayor Bloomberg that endorses Obama. Those two nitwits that call themselves leaders are worrying about global warming while people are begging for help in NJ and NY. Wouldn’t surprise me if Christie jumps on the global warming train. They pull in the money from the global warming scare while people suffer and die because of mother nature. Now could this be manmade, well there are questions we have about that, not bc we are stupid, but know how to follow the money trail. I would believe chemtrails and HARRP before I fell for global warming/climate change. I will never forget an article msnbc and a few others had about Osama Bin Laden pushing global warming and telling us to listen to Obama.. I knew right then he and Obama had things in common. Obama can’t prove to us Bin Laden is dead much less global warming.

This was a ‘hundred year storm’. The last was more than 100 years ago.
Oh, and the storm was magnified by interaction with COLD air.
Idiots need to stop confidently spouting lies as if they have proof… They aren’t even using logic, if they ever were.

Posted on November 2, 2012 at 12:13amJust what I was thinking. A lot of people have learned that these liberals, often by their own admission, don’t care about the truth, and people are starting to just ignore them and leave them behind with real science.
Their response? Ad Hominem fallacy, the retreat of those who know they’re wrong and won’t admit it. Also often the sign of a coming fall… as in pride goes before.

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 10:41pmI post this story on every one of these dumbass global warming stories. This is the wording of the Petition Project (sponsored by OISM.org). There’s more info at the link provided.
We urge the United States government to reject the global warming agreement that was written in Kyoto, Japan in December, 1997, and any other similar proposals. The proposed limits on greenhouse gases would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the health and welfare of mankind.
There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth.
Over 31,000 American scientists have signed this petition.

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 11:14pmIt falls on deaf ears. Only the wonks like myself understand what your talking about. Those of us who are skeptics can usually explain why we don’t just fall in line like the fact that to this day, all the modeling done is solely based on anthropogenic forcing only. They don’t even model natural forcing and never have. Believers usually can quote Gore and tell you that a majority of scientists agree on man caused global warming. Even though, thanks to NASA, we now know we did in fact go through a warming trend for about 10 years that ended in the mid 90′s. We have been cooling for the last 10 years. The thesis is that green house gasses trap heat warming the planet causing all sorts of problems. But what has really happened is we have cooled and C02 has continued to rise.
Man caused climate change is the worst combination of grant science and pseudo science.

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 10:40pmI believe New York is going to get hit worse because of this immediate sentiment.
I believe Bloomberg, Gore and the like are stealing God’s voice.
Sometimes storms are humbling reminders to a wayward populace. I can’t say anyone deserved this or that. I certainly deserve a thump or two.
But I can say, when a horrific, humbling event which could bring people closer to their God occurs, and some demagogue stands up and says “It wasn’t God. It was man!”
Well… they’re just asking for worse.
Maybe the plague is next? That can’t be blamed on global warming. Or a meteor?
I hate this “I told you so” crap coming from these leftists who stand to profit from carbon credits.
Carbon, by the way, has 6 protons, 6 neutrons, and 6 electrons. Oh and it is number 6 on the periodic table.
Watch out for those carbon taxes coming soon. That is some biblical stuff. Being taxed for breathing and driving and running a business because of “global warming”?
I think I see the beast rising from the waters…
