To call the men and women serving in the U.S. military “heroes” is a drastic understatement. They put themselves in harm’s way so Americans can sleep easy and enjoy freedoms that many around the world will never see. The right to vote for a new president every four years is one the nation’s most cherished freedoms.
So you would think that the U.S. government would do everything in its power to make sure that the people fighting to preserve the country’s right to vote, get to vote themselves.
Shockingly, roughly 30 local active and reserve service members in the Tampa Bay, Fla. area are complaining to the Hillsborough Supervisor of Elections’ office that they have been taken off the voter rolls.
WTSP-TV explains how this is possible:
Valrico resident and Navy Captain Peter Kehrig, who has been abroad for five years tells 10 News he feels cheated by a system that removed him from the rolls.
Florida State Law requires county supervisor of elections offices to perform regular “maintenance” on its voter rolls to eliminate voters who have been convicted of felonies, moved out of the county, or may have died.
Voters who miss two consecutive general elections (2010 and 2008, for instance) are mailed a letter to their residence warning them they will be removed from the rolls. But since the post office only forwards mail for six months, Kehrig never got it.
[…]
Kehrig is one of about 30 active and reserve service members who have contacted the Hillsborough Supervisor of Elections’ office about the discovery, but October 8 was the last day the law allows a voter to register for the general election. Other Tampa Bay-area counties reported small numbers of complaints too.
Kehrig, who is a 30-year military veteran, says lawmakers need to change the law so that service members are not disenfranchised during elections.
“It’s not just a right that I’ve earned by being an American…but I’ve [been] trying to protect our country and I really believe it’s a right I’m being denied,” Kehrig said about voting.
Additionally, it should be noted that WTSP is currently conducting the “#ProtectYourVote” campaign to investigate allegations of “voter influence and other improprieties at the polls.”

Nov. 2, 2012 at 11:13pmThat’s an easy one – if they won’t let you vote, catch the next plane back to the USA, check in with your recruiter, and tell him you’ve been stripped of your citizens right to vote, ergo, you shouldn’t even be in the military until vetted by Homeland Security…
A few thousand of those, and it’ll NEVER happen again.

Nov. 3, 2012 at 9:03amI was away from my home state for 4 years. I didn’t get the notice to renew the sticker for my car plates. Well several months after moving back I was pulled over & ticketed $75. It was humiliating. Also I was upset that the state had never notified me. Then again I never left the state a forwarding address, so who’s fault is that? Mine!
Just like people need food insurance, a go bag & a list of phone numbers to call in case their wallet/purse is stolen with credit cards with ti, people need to include their DMV & voter registrar.
I feel for this guy, but he is wrong. I appreciate his service & I don’t doubt that he has everything squared away at his job. but he doesn’t domestically.

Nov. 3, 2012 at 10:44amThis really angers me. I’ve read about the spigot voting, bus loads of homeless being hauled from poll to poll to vote and vote again and again.. Lord only knows how many illegal votes we’ll have.
Then, they can’t even give our servicemen & women the right to vote while they are risking their very lives for us in another Country. Something’s very wrong with our system of Justice. In fact if I had a guess, I’d guess that DOJ has a lot to do with dissing our servicemen. Totally corrupt office.
When our military gets tired of being ignored, they might just leave on their own and never come back, and I wouldn’t blame them. Sometimes we have to give more to those who protect us from evils in other lands. LET THEM VOTE, dammit. It’s the least we can to for them.

Nov. 3, 2012 at 7:54amWhen I first joined the Army I lived in Tampa, right there in Hillsborough County, FL. I de-registered. While at home in another state after basic and AIT, I went to re-register to find out that I was still on the rolls. While there I gathered all the info that I would need to keep my absentee ballots coming, as well contact names, phone numbers and proper mailing address so that I could notify them once I had my unit assignment when I reached Ft Bragg. While at home on leave during each PCS move I would pay them another visit to ask them not to send anything else to that previous address and when I got settled in at my next assignment I would then send them my address. Before any elections I would also send my request for an absentee ballot. I found that to be the best way to maintain my registration to vote. My family would forward me information when special and local only elections were coming up. I can’t take credit for this idea. My uncle who had retired from the Army a year earlier made the suggestion since he had problems once or twice. Just like paying your bills on time while in the service, its a simple matter of maintaining your registry.

Nov. 2, 2012 at 10:55pmOkay, so you have to ask a couple of questions, This person did not vote in either 2008 or 2010, so he is inactive under Florida election law. Dare we ask why he didn’t vote in the last Presidential election? And just how is the State of Florida, or any other state for that matter, supposed to know that a voter who hasn’t exercised their privilege in four years is on active duty in the military. Will we require that a state check military databases, not to mention all other state’s voter registration records, to see if the persons they are thinking of removing are on active duty, or registered to vote in another state where they might be stationed? The fact that there are only 30 such cases seems to indicate that it’s not that dramatic a problem that needs such a dramatic solution.

Nov. 3, 2012 at 3:39amI think in this day and age of linked databases, it is not unreasonable to expect a Secretary of State or County Clerk to check to see if someone is on active duty. Pretty simple, actually. And 30 people is probably just the tip of the iceberg. And you say 30 people may not be that big of a deal, but to those 30, it IS a big deal, don’t you think?

Nov. 2, 2012 at 10:48pmThe question is – Why didn’t they vote in 2008 and 2010? Their 30 votes aren’t going to matter anyway.
Mitt Romney is going to win this election by a landslide. People are coming out of the woodwork to vote for him.
Early voting is still going on in my area, and it’s incredible how long the lines are at my Randall’s/Safeway store. The store agreed to be an early voting polling place. I already have voted for Mitt Romney, but I was there tonight. The line went well past the long side of the store. I spoke with a clerk in the store, and he said that the lines have been that long all day.
The voting for Romney reminds me of Chick-Fil-A day. People are standing up for their rights to say – marriage is for one man and one woman; abortion should never be a method of birth control; and Americans are disgusted by Barack Obama’s tax and spend Keynesian economics.
Romney/Ryan 2012 – definitely!

Nov. 3, 2012 at 12:43pmWith Obama in office, there is no guarantee their votes will be COUNTED, even if they DO vote. Remember all the military absentee ballots they “lost” in 2008, until it was “too late” for them to be counted? Our worthless POS POTUS and his equally worthless cohorts are going to pull every trick in the book to get extra votes on the book for HIM by stealing them from Romney.
Witness the voting machine “glitches” in Ohio, which they are trying to pass off as “random computer glitches” (you notice they are still USING the voting machines that have these glitches). If they were “random” glitches wouldn’t some of the Obama votes get changed to Romney occasionally? Isn’t it amazing that EVERY SINGLE INSTANCE results in a Romney vote being changed to Obama?
With SEIU members “maintaining” the voting machines and counting the ballots, and Black Panther thugs waving clubs and intimidating elderly white voters away from the polls–which they’ve been given license to do, since Holder did not see fit to prosecute them, even after they were VIDEOTAPED DOING THIS in 2008, it will be a miracle if Romney gets ANY votes!
I am so SICK of this POS POTUS and his lying, crooked friends. They infest the White House like cockroaches!

Nov. 3, 2012 at 6:05ambukowski72 – Check your history…suppression of the black vote occurred predominantly in the south, and nearly all of the southern states at that time were led by democrats. Ever heard of “Jim Crow”? Southern Democrats fought tooth and nail against the 1964 Civil Rights Act and then took credit for it when it passed, thanks to LBJ (who hated blacks) Democrats have also been the driving force behind EVERY effort to disrupt absentee military voting. Gore succeeded in suppressing 1400 military ballots in 2000. Obama just sued Ohio to stop early voting by military members in that state as well. It is common knowledge in the military that the Dems will always try to negate our ballots, especially in a tight race. RLTW
