NJ Counties Implement Gas-Rationing System as Fuel Shortage Grips Northeast (And Wait Until You See the Lines)

NEW YORK (TheBlaze/AP) — The state of New Jersey on Friday announced plans to implement a gas-rationing system in 12 counties in the northern part of the state.
Gov. Chris Christie ordered the rationing to help ease fuel shortages and long lines at gas stations. Starting at noon Saturday, residents with license plates ending in an even number will be able to buy gas only on even-numbered days. Those with plates ending in an odd number can purchase gas on odd-numbered days.
And when it came to fuel supplies and patience, the New York metro area was running close to empty Friday.
From storm-scarred New Jersey to parts of Connecticut, a widespread lack of gasoline or electricity to pump it brought grousing, gridlock and worse, compounding frustrations as millions of Americans struggled to return to normal days after Superstorm Sandy. A man pulled a gun in one gas-line fracas that led to an arrest.
Lines of cars, and in many places queues of people on foot carrying bright red jerry cans for generators, waited for hours for the precious fuel. And those were the lucky ones. Other customers gave up after finding only closed stations or dry pumps marked with yellow tape or “No Gas” signs.
“EMPTY!” declared the red-type headline dominating the New York Daily News’ front page.
“I drove around last night and couldn’t find anything,” said a relieved Kwabena Sintim-Misa as he finally prepared to fill up Friday morning in Fort Lee, N.J., near the George Washington Bridge, where the wait in line lasted three hours.
Arlend Pierre-Louis of Elmont, on Long Island, said he awoke at 4:30 a.m. to try to get gas.
When he finally found some – “the one working pump in Elmont” – the line was so long he gave up and returned to his home, which still has no light or hot water.
At a Hess gas station in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn, the 10-block line caused confusion among passing drivers.
“There’s been a little screaming, a little yelling. And I saw one guy banging on the hood of a car,” said Vince Levine, who got in line in his van at 5 a.m. and was still waiting at 8 a.m. “But mostly it’s been OK.”
While the snaking lines and frayed nerves revived memories for some of the crippling Arab oil embargo of the 1970s, a cabdriver stuck in a 17-block line at a Manhattan station remained philosophical.
“I don’t blame anybody,” said Harum Prince. “God, he knows why he brought this storm.”
Many tried to heed Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s admonition to “have some patience” as the stricken metro area recovers from the unprecedented storm that upended daily life with power outages, food shortages and other frustrations besides lack of fuel.
But tempers boiled over in some places.
Arguments in gas station queues in New York’s Queens borough and in Pelham led to arrests, authorities said. In the first case, a man pulled a gun, and in the second police confiscated a box cutter. No one was hurt.

Power outages that lingered across the region prevented some gas stations that had fuel from being able to pump it, officials said. But fuel supplies themselves were badly disrupted by the storm.
Sandy damaged ports that accept fuel tankers and flooded underground equipment that sends fuel through pipelines. Without power, fuel terminals can’t pump gasoline onto tanker trucks, and gas stations can’t pump fuel into customers’ cars.
The Port of New York and New Jersey was slowly starting to accept tankers, but some cargo was being diverted to the Port of Virginia. Federal requirements for low-smog gasoline have been lifted, and fuel trucks are on their way to the area.
Officials said they were working to speed the flow of fuel.
On Friday, the Obama administration ordered the purchase of up to 12 million gallons of unleaded fuel and up to 10 million gallons of diesel fuel for distribution in areas affected by the storm to supplement private-sector efforts. It will be transported by tanker trucks to New York, New Jersey and other damaged communities.
In addition, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano temporarily waived a maritime rule to allow foreign oil tankers coming from the Gulf of Mexico to enter Northeastern ports. The action, she said, would “remove a potential obstacle to bringing additional fuel to the storm-damaged region.”
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, meanwhile, signed an executive order waiving the state’s requirement that fuel tankers register and pay a tax before unloading.
Tankers, he said Friday, are now making “great progress” delivering fuel to distribution centers.
“No reason to panic,” the governor urged.
Bloomberg told reporters Friday that the gas-supply issues “are starting to be alleviated” through the temporary regulatory fixes and other developments. He noted a plan is in place to ensure that police, fire and other emergency vehicles have the fuel they need. Buses, including school buses, are also a priority.
“But the bottom line is that the gasoline system is getting back on its feet,” he said.
Delays due to storms, the mayor added, “have happened before. They spring up very quickly, and they go away very quickly. We basically have a supply system – as it comes in we use it. If it stops coming in, we’re in trouble.”
But keeping perspective could be a challenge as the gas lines lengthened.
Many service centers along the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike were so full that cars trying to pass at highway speeds sometimes had to swerve to avoid them.
In Connecticut, traffic jams created by New Yorkers exiting from Interstate 95 to take advantage of the stations that were open were “making it difficult for everybody,” said Greenwich police Lt. Kraig Gray.
Police monitored lines in many places, including a Hess station in Fort Lee, N.J., where an officer was seen ordering a man out of line after sneaking in from a side street.
Among those waiting there, Kenneth Kelly of Englewood Cliffs took it all in stride.
“It ain’t that bad. I could be in Queens,” he said, referring to the confrontations there. “I’ve seen a lot of bad in my life, people getting sick and things like that. This is what I call an inconvenience. Now, losing something like a house, that would be bad.”

Posted on November 3, 2012 at 6:51amAny gas station owner who can’t get a simple generator and wire it into their electric panel to power their pumps needs to lose the business they could be getting during this emergency. And give up all your ideas which don’t seem to be politically correct. Simply ignoring problems of this nature just keeps them from being solved by trying to ignore them. Calling people racist who point out Obama’s not understanding his daughter’s 7th grade math isn’t racist, its his own words and why he doesn’t understand enough about economics to get our economy going. He only understands community organizing. As a Southerner, I can’t stand his constant condeceision into southern dialect for his speeched. I keep expection “MF” to pop out of his mouth as his retoric is so inflammitory and divisive. True leaders don’t divide people. They rally them together.

Posted on November 3, 2012 at 2:03amSince there isn’t any shortage of gas, the problem is electrical power to pump it. FEMA needs to provide generators to every gas station in the area. An Obama – Christie hug does nothing to improve the situation.
What needs to be done is to uninstall Obama from Office. All of Obama’s policies have damaged American interests. We are NOT a Muslim Nation. All of our Laws are based on Judea/Christian values, even for those who believe religions are a joke. Barack Obama is a supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, and if you don’t see that, you are delusional. All of his decisions have been based on what’s good for the Muslim World. Posted on November 3, 2012 at 1:20amThe BEST RATIONING IS TO LET THE PRICE FLOAT! Then, people could decide whether the price is worth it and the providers would be incentivized to make whatever arrangements are necessary to get fuel supplies into those locations that need it the most! Every contractor with a fuel truck could get into the picture and drive from neighborhood to neighborhood, like an ice cream truck, selling 5-gallon quantities of generator fuel, getting those people out of the gas lines! They could also provide a roving AAA-like fuel service as they drive to and from the neighborhoods they serve.

Let me tell you what I was trying to figure out.
In the secret negotiations between Iran and the US in Qatar, it was planned to get Iran to halt its nuclear enrichment program, if only for a few weeks, in order to help Mr Obama’s re-election chances.
http://counterjihadreport.com/tag/ali-akbar-velayati/
The woman’s identity is being kept secret.
In this item, which obviously needs to be translated,
http://www.kaleme.com/1391/08/05/klm-117643/
the woman is identied as “Ms. Valerie Zhart supervisor, advisor to Obama, the President of Americaâ€.
So what I’m trying to figure out is if “Valerie Zhart” is a mistranslation for “Valerie Jarret” because, as you know, machine translation can have trouble with names.
Anyway, it has all gone past now. Just letting you know what the story was.

My point being that Mr Obama seemed to be quite willing to risk nuclear conflict in order to be re-elected. That may be a bit of a stretch, but that’s the way that I read it.
If “the woman” was in fact Valerie Jarret, that adds credibility to the hypothesis. It also points to the Obama adminstration’s position in the Benghazi debacle.
Many more facts needed, obviously.
Anyway…

I then drove my truck down to the local gas station and filled four, 5-gallon gas cans and one 2.5 gallon can, and my truck. I got home, added fuel stabilizer to the cans and put them out back in my shed with the four 5-gallon jerry cans I had stored six months earlier. I made sure my water filtration system was handy, tested my generators, collected the generators and all the cords and power strips I would need to keep the house running, made sure there was enough firewood and kindling handy for the firebox, and had a beer.
Food? We have enough on hand for 4-5 years if necessary. Takes up most of one room in the basement.

Posted on November 3, 2012 at 12:32amHey, FEMA, why doesn’t our government provide a tax incentive for gas stations to provide for their own power needs? If one in six took advantage of such an offer, there would be no gas lines! A really small generator can run a gas pump! Payment might be an issue, but scrip could be written, say with a signature and driver’s license number and DMV can get involved in settlements if necessary, AFTER the emergency! The scrip approach would discourage gangs of thieves from robbing the gas stations. One requirement with backup power might be theft-proof safes to hold cash, rather than a cash register. Cash gets deposited in one safe and scrip and cash receipts get deposited in another. It can be sorted out, with police protection if necessary after the crisis. Credit transactions could be sent on a store-and-forward basis, with drivers license or voter ID used to attest to the card transaction and provide recourse if the card proves to be invalid.

Posted on November 3, 2012 at 12:15amIf I were governor of New York, New Jersey or Connecticut, I’d suspend ALL regulation of business or pricing or emergency powers and encourage EVERY contractor with a fuel truck to visit my state, charge what they can get and return as much as they like for the next 30 days! I’d do the same with EVERY food truck within 500 miles–heck, EVERY FOOD TRUCK IN THE COUNTRY! I’d allow scrip, IOU’s or whatever medium of exchange or obligation people need to conduct essential business and I’d permit EVERY vendor the opportunity to deduct losses as an additional offset to their business taxes, with a 3-year carryforward! These actions would result in IMMEDIATE response from those most able to respond! There is no better way to distribute limited goods and services than to let prices float, whether it is a windfall for a gas station that just tanked up the day before (they’ll have to replenish their supplies at higher prices later) or an incentive for a fuel, food, energy or shelter supplier to send truckloads from 500-1,000 miles away, with extra fees for licences, overtime and a reduced ability to serve their local markets during the time of crisis for the Northeast!
