The Interesting Thing We Found Surrounding Obama’s Grades in College

Few issues arouse so much interest as Barack Obama’s grades. Everyone from Jodi Kantor, columnist for the New York Times, to David Maraniss of the Washington Post to Donald Trump has weighed in on what they are or might be. Despite the interest, however, we still don’t know what they are — Obama has not yet released his academic records from Occidental (1979-1981), Columbia (1981-1983), or Harvard Law School (1988-1991).

Theories abound as to why, but one that has largely been ignored is that maybe they’re hidden because they reveal Barack Obama was entirely average. How so? New research into the Occidental and Columbia archives by TheBlaze shows that Obama transferred from Occidental during a time of rampant grade inflation and entered Columbia during one of the easiest years to transfer in recent memory.

Newspaper accounts from Occidental show grade inflation was rampant for the years 1977-1981, the year that Barack Obama transferred to Columbia. It was so bad that, according to the student newspaper at the time, the dean of faculty had to intervene in the fall of 1981. (Barack Obama transferred in the spring of 1981 as a sophomore, meaning he would have enrolled.)

Grade Inflation Could Explain How Obama Got Into Columbia

During that five-year period, “average GPAs ran 3.11, 3.07, 3.01, 3.08 and 3.08, respectively,” wrote Michael Bruce Abelson for The Occidental on February 19, 1982. “A statistical study by Dean of Faculty James England printed in this month’s [February] edition of the Faculty Newsletter, assails the college’s rising grade point average and makes a direct appeal to faculty members to reconsider the basis upon which grades are given.”

To put these high GPAs in perspective, consider that were Occidental College’s entire student population to apply to Columbia College in ’81, half would have had sufficient GPAs to be admitted at the New York Ivy League school.

The only reason that is possible, however, is because Columbia’s transfer student standards during that same period were very low. At Columbia, the quality of the transfer student had declined so much so that the average admitted transfer student’s GPA was a meager 3.0 and the average SAT score an 1100 (out of a possible 1600).

Jeremy Feldman, a student newspaper writer at Columbia, documented the lower standards in a Nov. 18, 1981 and quoted admissions officials: “On paper at least, the quality of the students accepted [as transfers] has declined along with the number of applicants, the officials say.” (Columbia Spectator, “Tight Housing Discourages Transfer Applications to CC)

Feldman, quoting Robert Boatti, Assistant Dean of Admissions, as well as the former college Dean Arnold Collery, continued:

Boatti also attributed the drop in transfer application to the College’s policy of requiring transfer students to take courses in its core curriculum and to the limited availability of financial aid for them.

He added a “majority” of the transfers come here from college in the New York area. Many come from community colleges, rather than the nation’s top schools.

In grades and other indicators of academic performance, the crop of transfer applicants “doesn’t stand out the way they did before,” [Dean Arnold] Collery said.

Boatti confirmed Dean Collery’s observations:

Among accepted transfer students, the average combined math and verbal score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test is a 1,100 and their grade-point average at their former schools is about 3.0, Boatti said.

The freshman class at the College had a combined SAT score more than 100 points higher.

Only 450 students applied to transfer to Columbia in 1981 and sixty-seven were admitted, according to the Columbia Spectator, compared to 650 applicants just four years before.

Interestingly, Obama’s GPA may not have mattered to get into Columbia at all.

“GPAs were dropped from student transcripts [at Occidental] during the late 1960s, in an effort to de-emphasis grades and stress learning for its own sake,” wrote Arpie Balekjian in the student newspaper, The Occidental on March 13, 1981. On March 11, 1981, Occidental’s faculty voted to reestablish GPAs on transcripts, but by then, Obama had already filled out an application to transfer to Columbia and been accepted. Impossible though it may seem, he may very well have been admitted to Columbia without ever having to reveal his grades.

And that may not be far-fetched considering Columbia’s lower standards at the time, which were in part fueled by a housing crunch that forced the college to lower standards in order to attract transfer students.

Barack Obama did not graduate with honors at Columbia and so his acolytes make much of his time at Harvard where he was president of the Harvard Law Review and where he graduated magna cum laude. Many ignore that his magna cum laude honors may well not been magna cum laude today. Under the system in place when Obama was a student, only one third of a graduating class did not receive honors. For the class of ’95, a whopping 71.3 percent of the student body graduated with honors, doubling the number of students graduating with honors since 1972 and tripling the numbers receiving magna cum laude. Receiving magna cum laude may be impressive, but it is less so, if one in six students win it.

Eventually the Harvard Law faculty voted overwhelmingly to make it harder to get honors, a policy change that cut the number of students graduating with honors in half, according to The Harvard Law Record, a student newspaper of Harvard Law School. Under the old system, all students had to do was reach a GPA cutoff. Given the stiff competition, professors felt pressure to inflate the grades of their favorite students. Under the new system, only the top ten percent of students received magna cum laude. (Victoria Kuohung, “Class of ’99 May Find Honors Harder to Earn,” Harvard Law Record, February 16, 1996).

What does this all mean? Ultimately, given the grade inflation of the time at all three institutions Obama attended, the larger story isn’t about Barack Obama’s grades, but his courses and the radical professors who taught them.

  Don’t worry about his grades, there are deeper things to be concerned about. Case in point Progressives only like Obama as long as he can walk on water, that is that it means as long as people are afraid of his race.   GB really needs to get over the fact that the PRESIDENT actually attended universities and was admitted to Harvard Law. And certainly Harvard Law has more than enough gifted students of all demographic backgrounds to be selective. And let’s not forget the LCATs. this report is a waste of time, effort and just reinforces how low the editorial policy here is.

The lack of real grading standards and the loss of the grading curve due to the Affirmative Action lawsuits since the 60s, has resulted in them all thinking they are the smartest guys in any room.   Grade inflation is still going on today all through the fruited plain. Currently, the letter grade A is now given 43% of the time. Yes, that is correct 43% of all college grades is an A. For more information on this subject I recommend the web site of a retired Duke professor gradeinflation dot com. We crossed the proverbial rubicon on grade inflation when A’s became the most given grade in 1998.

  It seems as the so called Ivy League schools they inflate more than anyone else and have average GPAs of around 3.5, if you go to a school that has TECH, in it, your likely to have grade deflation and work very hard for your grades. its that way at GT. At state schools its like 3.0 average and they do inflate but not anywhere as much as the Ivies do.

  Remember the 1994 movie “With Honors” in which Brendan Fraser decided to hold to his liberal ideals despite being punished by his Harvard professor with not graduating with honors (a truly difficult feat). I loved that movie. Wow, I was a gullible fool. But I was a teenager when that movie came out. Liberals, what is your excuse?

  Obama is a product of affirmative action. Actually the culmination of the school system. Here is the president of the united states and his grades were altered. I grew up in south central los angeles, straight out of Lynwood in Ca. In the 7th grade there I was a straight A student, an honor society student. Then we moved to Orange county. I learned how dumb I really was, 2 grades behind, d’s and f’s. It took a few years of hard work but I got up to speed. The lesson, how dumbdowned our inner city scool children are. So we are to believe our president is brilliant. He was given a pass in school and is given a pass as president. The supporters of Obama come in 2 camps, those dumber than a box of rocks like the :obamaphone lady and those who have an agenda to bring the USA down to a country equal in the world as a nation…..equally poor.

I find it fascinating how the same people who constantly deride and besmirch Ivy League universities and institutions of higher learning in general as liberal, elitist and out of touch with the values of average Americans are now so concerned with Mr. Obama’s college GPAs.

Wouldn’t it make more sense that someone who actually performed poorly in college and went on to become extremely successful should be held up as a hero of the right.

No president has ever released their college transcripts; George W Bush’s were leaked. John Kerry, as a presidential candidate, gave the Navy permission to release his Yale transcripts.

  I don’t recall Mr. Bush being assailed for his grades. He was an average student and no one really expected him to have been anything but that. His transcripts were leaked in 1999 and he still won the election. So I don’t get your point.
  
  If you’re actually implying that seeing Mr. Obama’s grades will change people’s minds you’re deluding yourself. If it turns out he was great student he right will just claim the transcripts were a forgery and if he turns to be below average the left will just say who cares, judge him on his record as president.

  It isn’t just Ivy League colleges that are out of touch. As an adjunct professor and a grad student at an art college I find that as a conservative I am the Lone Ranger among both faculty and students. In fact, many professors are at least Marxists, if not even farther to the left. And talk about politically correct! In a drawing class I drew a picture of an artist about to paint Mohammed. In the picture the artist hasn’t drawn anything yet, but has a paint brush poised to strike the canvas. The reaction of those standing around him shows only abject terror and/or anger. I made it to address the fears and hypocrisy among those who won’t bat an eyelash when Christianity is mocked, or our flag is burned, but “respectfully” tiptoe on eggshells when it comes to Islam. You would have thought if I walked into class naked it would cause less of a stir among faculty and students. During a group critique the mood quickly became hostile because of my choice of subjects, but then, its a place where America bashing is lauded.
  
  As far as the protected classes go, in one class I teach a black student missed a project deadline, which the syllabus plainly said would result in an “F.” He went ballistic, demanding that I accept his project, and soon enough played the race card, fully expecting to be given an “A” or a “B.” You see, he has learned to be the exception, not exceptional. And, of course, when I expected him to live up to the same standards as everyone else, he dropped

  If Universities are all bastions of liberalism whose grading systems are corrupt in favor of visible minorities, what value does releasing a transcript actually have (Particularly one of a visible minority)?
  
  If his grades were above average it would reinforce the view on the right that Mr. Obama benefited from weaker standards both for admissions as well as coursework afforded to minorities at the time.

  The point for many of us is NOT about his grades, but about his entrance applications. Did he apply to these colleges as a foreign student or not? If he did, then he really doesn’t have a birth certificate and that is further proof that he is a liar and con-man and was and is ineligible to hold the office of PTOUS (of course his father being a British subject made him ineligible from the git-go). If he is found to be holding his office as a fraud, what will that mean for all of the laws, policies, regulations, executive orders etc that he has forced down our throats?

  The only reason his grades matter is that they are sure to contradict the image that Obama and the media have crafted – that this magical black man is a messianic genius who is destined to save us from capitalism and the evils wrought by capitalists. Obama’s grade point – when eventually contrasted to G W Bush’s – will show that he was always a mediocre student – certainly no brainiac – and one who had very few classes that involved digesting and comprehending concrete information. I guarantee that Obama glanced through more pragmatic subjects such as economics and accounting, and probably only had the basics in any of the sciences. Bush’s grades were leaked, and they were higher than Kerry’s. Won’t it shock the obamaphone out of Rachel Maddow’s hands when she discovers Bush’s grades were also higher than Obama’s.

  I get it, if you can’t prove Mr. Obama was born in Kenya by attacking his US birth corticated as a forgery then try a backdoor approach by demanding his college transcripts and/or applications.
  
  So you’re saying the birth certificate on file in Hawaii did not exist when Mr. Obama applied to college. Or that he did have a US birth certificate and chose to apply as foreign student with a fake Kenyan birth certificate in order to get an advantage on admissions. Furthermore the admissions people at Occidental and Columbia never questioned why he spent all those years in a Hawaiian high school without becoming a naturalized US citizen.
  
  As an aside I recall from my university days that foreign students paid almost double the tuition of domestic students for the same courses. I am not sure if it’s the same in the US and if so Mr. Obama chose to pay thousands of dollars more in tuition just so he could attend an ivy league school. I suppose his mother and grandparents went along with the scheme and no one ever found out the truth.

The true progressives have attacked Mr. Obama form the left on his not being able to deliver on policy promises and never describe him using this language. The right has taken Chris Mathews stream of consciousness visceral reactions to Mr. Obama’s speeches and applied it to everyone on the left.
  
  My personal experience was one of a horrible student in my undergrad days, however reality hits fast and I eventually had to get my act together and go on to graduate school and professional accreditation. Now I can make a comfortable living doing what I do. So I am not sure about the significance of good grades with respect to one’s overall intelligence or success in the real world.
  
  Regardless how you feel about Mr. Obama you can’t deny that he is a success story on many levels.

  AZFREEMAN – You got it right. The primary issue is what his student loan application tells about his claimed citizenship (but yeah, if the grades are of a slacker, that is telling too).
  
  Look, we had a president before that went to extreme and crazy lengths to hide his polio disability from the American people. He defrauded us with a train car designed for him to drive in and travel by train without ever having to get in/out of his car! We always saw him giving a speech, already in position behind a podium, etc. It happens.
  
  The thing is, whoever wants to be president already has a character flaw relating to self-importance.
  
  Now, if a person usurped the Presidency under fraudulent terms, and took control of the military…that is treason in my book and should be dealt with to the most severe degree. Not many crimes bigger than that one…starting military actions by wielding authority gained under false pretenses.

Affirmative Action lowered the standards for all American students. That is why our country is now in the sad state that it is in. The Discrimination Card has ruined American education, the housing market, and now the election process is in danger. Time to cut this foolishness. Treat all people as Americans first, not as some sub-set culture. The same standards should apply to all. The same and responsibilities should be expected of all. We are Americans first. Everything else should be secondary: Party. Race. Gender. Religious affiliation. Americans first. Period.

  Amen!! That’s the quickest way to minimize the affects of any racism that might be out there. If no one is getting any benefits because of race then what is the need to even mention it. It’s human nature. If it can be abused for some sort of “profit” it will be.
  
  The terms african-american, hispanic-american, etc, all indicate that those people are only “partially” American which is not true in the least. If you are a LEGAL citizen of these United States then you are FULLY American and it should be so stated and not minimized in any way.
  
  I refuse to use those terms as I find them repulsive and demeaning to the groups of people they attempt to describe. I wish everyone would follow suit.
  
  It’s a matter of changing “stinking thinking” otherwise known as progressive thinking which of course, normally lacks fact based logic and merely “feels good”.

He doesn’t have to run anything. The system that he hates so much has MADE him successful and NO he didn’t do it himself like most of the rest of us have. It was all almost totally GIVEN to him which is why he expects that is how it should be done for everyone. He’s a “welfare baby” of sorts for his entire life.

That is the type of leadership we can expect in the coming years from the current generation unless something drastic happens to wake them up to the real world and real life.

I think that is why he was so quiet the first debate. I think he was warned not to say too much for fear he would say the ‘truth’ by mistake. He ended up doing that anyway. showing how obnoxious he is despite everyone’s attempts to keep a lid on his radicalism and contempt for the country he is trying to tear down.
The only people who know what he is really doing are his fellow Muslims and they are very good at keeping the secret.

There is a story on Drudge about a SS agent.. assigned to BHO.. who committed suicide.. in a car with the motor running. Supposedly he committed suicide because of an affair he was having?

  How can someone be God, and not be approachable? God doesn’t have an angle. God is very approachable, and therein is why God told Moses to leave all the children down below the mountain because if they see God they will surely die, meaning it will kill their spirit because he is so so approachable.

This is not news to anyone. This man is just not bright at all. He is clever. There is a difference. My dog is clever enough to turn the front doorknob. Does that mean he is capable of complex thought and adroit at problem solving? I think not. I mean I wouldn’t give him the keys to the car and think he was capable of driving to the store.

The only reason that anyone would be interested in his grades would be to rebut the foolishness of his acolytes who insist, against overwhelming evidence to the contrary, that he is more brilliant than Jefferson, Lincoln amd JFK.

Obama and his radical professors – and the fact that this matter of his grades/transcripts have been allowed to hang in the air by the administration for one reason: decoy.

In using them as a decoy, anyone who pursues the answer, can be discredited as a ‘conspiracy nut’ even if they are not one.

This is a surprise? Grades were actually de-emphasized to the point that GPA’s and class rankings were not computed at many colleges in the early 1970′s. They only came back after graduate schools made it clear that schools not reporting this information would place their graduates at a disadvantage when it came to their applications.

Its also not really about his grades, which are probably not great considering how lazy he has shown himself to be. But, that his transcripts will show that he applied to these colleges as a foreign student seeking government assistance. He’s just not as transparent as he has claimed, now is he?

We don’t need to see his academic records to know that Obama can’t give a speech without a teleprompter, doesn’t understand basic math equations. What Obama does do, is to change his dialect when speaking with different groups of people. He loves the adoration of students and has focused on them throughout his campaign. Obama feels entitled to his position as president, but depends on others to tell him what to do. He’s good at lying. He’s good at procrastinating. He’s good at being as transparent as mud, but other than that, he’s a talking head.
