Woman Forced to Cover Up ‘Vote the Bible’ T-Shirt at TX Polling Place: ‘Targeted Because of Her Religious Beliefs’

Kay Hill likely thought she was merely defending her Christian views when she turned up at a Texas polling place with a shirt that read “vote the Bible.” But, to her surprise, she was told by an election worker to cover up the faith-based message. According to Texas state law, voters are not allowed to show up to a polling place with a sign, gesture, word or other related communication that suggests how others should vote.

At the time of the incident, Hill was casting her early vote at City Hall in Taylor, Texas. Her shirt caught the attention of a worker, who apparently offered her a jacket to cover it up. Now, she is threatening to file a formal complaint with the state’s attorney general if Williamson County refuses to apologize over the incident.

But officials, so far, are defending their poll volunteers, claiming that they were merely following state law. Rather than backing down, Williamson CountyΒ Public Affairs Director Connie Watson is doubling down, claiming that the shirt violates the law.

“Electioneering or loitering within 100 feet of the entrance to the polling place or inside the polling place is not allowed,” Watson explained. “Electioneering would cover wearing a hat, a pen, a T-shirt or a sign that would indicate a position for a political party, candidate or a proposition.”

But Hill believes she did nothing wrong and, thus, didn’t violate the law. Her attorney, Jonathan Saenz, agrees. Saenz claims that his client was told, upon entering the polling place, that the Bible shirt may offend some people. The lawyer, who is president of Texas Values, Β claims that his client was forced to give up her religious freedom in order to cast a vote. Saenz believes that she was “targeted because of her religious beliefs.”

“This is obviously a religious free expression and no one should be put in a position having to choose religious freedom over deciding to vote,” he explained.

As for mentioning the Bible, Saenz doesn’t understand why the t-shirt’s message is so problematic in the eyes of government officials.

“Nothing says that you can’t have a shirt that says vote the Bible. The last time I checked republicans and democrats, it’s not a partisan issue on the bible.”

Man, they’re scared of us Christians. The Bible wasn’t on the ballot so that wasn’t a valid reaction. Thats not telling you for what or whom you should vote, it’s a suggestion to make your choices in line with what God wants, something our country would be so much better for if they’d just ask WWJD. (What Would Jesus Do?). It’s purely hypocritical because if a Muslim showed up in their religious garb to vote its just as obvious who they’re voting for as who she is voting, yet they wouldn’t be told to cover up. The world hates Christians. No big surprise. They hated Jesus and he warned they’d hate us too.

The bible warns us Christians that these days will come. Well, they are here and it’s just beginning. Are you strong enough to stand up for Jesus no matter what? It may even mean your head one day. We all need to stop and think of that. Because it’s coming folks.

In your bible you can read where demons, coming eye ball to eye ball with Jesus will cower and beg him not to destroy them. Satan knows who is in control. It’s humans that gets it all mixed up.

Which of course means the action was not targeted to her being a Christian. So no story here folks. Oh Please. I am a Christian and I have been voting for years. The rules have not changed in Texas or the USA. Personally I like her shirt but to wear it to the polls. No. To use your words in your comments you wrote it is a “suggestion to vote in line of what God wants”. And if a Muslim showed up wearing a shirt that said Vote the Koran it would also be a “suggestion to vote in the line of what God wants”.
We have had 4 years spelled four to “watch and pray” and plenty of time this past year to decide who and what our values are and a message about God wouldn’t bother me because I love Him but a shirt that specifically says Vote? No no no no. Her rights haven’t been violated. She violated the rules. She wasn’t turned away and was merely asked to cover the message Vote. Don’t think she will win this one.

The car had so many save the earth, Obama, Biden, Anti religion, Anti war, Pro union, Pro education, Pro government stickers on it you couldn’t tell what color the car was. When I said something to him, that maybe he should move his car, his response was (very aggressive), “I have a bad back what do you want me to do walk here”. he wasn’t parked in the handicap, there was plenty of space out back. He drove this car as a form of voter intimidation at that site we got 8 voters it was a republican primary in a union / progressive town.

However, I have to say, political ads of any kind do not belong at the polling place. They’ve HAD their chance and if they haven’t got their point across in 2 years, then one more day won’t do it. No one is making this woman β€œchose religious freedom over deciding to vote”. No one made her renounce jesus to step in to the polling place. No one stopped her from voting, but you won’t wear a t-shirt that covertly promotes Romney either. The same would apply in any similar situation for any candidate, but this is typical blaze story.

If you gaze on a cross and “YOU” see Jesus hanging here, that is YOUR conscience, not hers. She is suggesting you use the bible as your guide. If you don’t believe the bible, then you have no problem, do you? In essence, once again, YOU can make her shirt a problem, or YOU don’t have to….emotions and beliefs stand within the beholder, not the advertiser. Are you voting because of what you see or hear that person saying or doing or says they will do (promises), or are you voting your conscience? If you are voting your conscience, then you are voting from within you! From your conscience. Not what someone else tells you to do.

The problem is the shirt had the word vote on it. It is telling people how to vote. We all know democrats are not Christian remember they initially removed God from their DNC platform this year until people raised a stink. I wouldn’t want someone showing up at the poll with an Obama shirt on. Would you? I love her message and that is how I am voting myself but laws do prohibit these things at a poll for a reason. Mostly to maintain a peaceful polling place. She should have covered up to vote then stood 100 feet away with the shirt uncovered and she could have even held a sign with the same message at that point. If she had done that and they stopped her then there is a legitimate reason to make a stink. I believe I may wear my Truth Has No Agenda T-shirt to vote though.

Texas apparently has a law that prohibits voters from showing up to a” polling place with a sign, gesture, word or other related communication that suggests how others should vote.”

This lady did not comply with that law. This is the “rendering to Caesar that which is Caesar’s”. In this country if we don’t like a law we work to get it repealed.

Why is it acceptable to discriminate against Christians in America and around the world? At the same time we, as a country, bend over and grab our ankles in order not to offend the tenets of the most evil religion in history — islam. It sickens me, and I for one, will not accept it. Islam is the source of evil in the world and it needs to be resisted and defeated. Christianity is THE source of love, goodness, and acceptance from the one true God and his son, Jesus Christ. We as Christians deserve, at least, the same measure of respect given to the followers of muhammad, who was a scoundrel, rapist, pedophile and murderer.

“If it said ‘Vote the burqa,’ then yes.”

The burqa in and of itself says “Vote the Qu’ran,” as it is exclusively Islamist garb. It ain’t a pair of jeans and a flannel shirt.

What is being assumed here is that “voting the bible” only endorses Romney, and the Obama campaign is, by contrast, aligned against the bible. (Actually, everyone already knows that!) Nothing on her shirt says anything about any candidate of any party. How then can it construed as endorsing either side?

Why does the cross and the word Bible have this administration running scared. If this is the case then all Muslims need to get rid of their religious clothing. I do not want to see this happen but Christians should be allowed to show their religion. This is so sad to have a “leader” who can dictate his way while others have no rights.

The attorney was wrong about the democrats not having a problem with THE BIBLE. Have we already forgotten that the demoncratic national convention REJECTED GOD not once but THREE times? Believe me, they still do. GOD has no place in that party’s leadership. And, sadly, HE probably has no place in the repukeican party either.

By the way the will of the folks (used on purpose here) who were delegates to the demoncratic convention was overruled not from moral grounds, but because of political backlash. Do not be deceived…. the demoncrats want NOTHING to do with GOD because HIS way is not even close to their way.

Geez…..Christ came between Leviticus and today, man. I’m sorry you missed that day at church. Old Testament was for the Jews. New Testament if for Christians and the fact that nothing in the old Testament guarantees salvation. Only Christ can guarantee your salvation. Jews don’t believe this and you don’t believe this. You all have everything to lose by your beliefs. I have nothing to lose by mine. If what we believe is a farce, then all Christians will join you in never never land. If what we believe is true, then you will WISH you could join us in eternity. Again, the choice is yours,.

MAVSFAN75: Customs were different in the old testament. To be honest, I would never speak again if that is what the Lord wanted. Do you think this culture gives women their “best life now”? I don’t. Personally I don’t need to be a man. I would rather have a man be the head of my house in a biblical way. We are the bride of Christ. A man is to love his bride more than himself and give his life for her.

Now days women work 1-3 jobs, (men abandon their family half the time), abortions, cleaning on top of working outside the home with no time for their children, no respect from men—used as sex objects and not respected at all (porn, movies, etc.).
Take me back to those OT days any time! But oh wow, women get to vote! Yippie! NOT!

Jacob loved Rachel so much he worked 7 years for her and then he was tricked by the father and was given her sister instead. The father said he needed to marry off the oldest daughter first–Jacob loved Rachel so much he worked 7 more years to marry her! Genesis 29

I work the polls in Texas, as a supervisor, I would have to make the same decision. In Texas if you wear anything that says vote on it, anything buttons, shirts, or other stuff. It can be considered electioneering inside the 100ft marker (It is illegal to attempt to persuade a voter to vote for or against anything, and including voting itself inside 100ft from the entrance of the polling site). I wouldn’t care if to her “Vote the bible” meant voting for any particular candidate, position, or cause. The fact that she has “Vote” on her shirt, and / or a checkmark, is enough to cause me to tell her to find a different shirt to wear. This has nothing to do with religion it has to do with the voting laws of the state of Texas.

I agree. The last thing you want at a polling place is a disagreement between those who support one party and those support another party. Cast your vote, and take leave your ideology at home, or at least in your car! The campaign is over, and the only thing you can do is vote!

Unfortunately this time I am going to have to side with the officials. The issue I see is not the words “the Bible”. but the word VOTE. That word right there is the slippery slope that allowed the officials to request her cover up the shirt. I will wear a religuious t shirt myself to vote and test the waters. I do think this t shirt is in violation of the law though, as she isn’t so much expressing her religious beliefs as she is suggesting what others should vote based upon. I’m sure she didnt however intend to break a law, unfortunately in my view she did.

Wrong. The word “vote” in and of itself suggests nothing more than the very action everyone is there to execute. The word “Bible” is non-political and does not support nor disparage any particular issue. It is a religious expression which is protected speech.

I would have refused. Called my attorney and stood my ground against the brown shirt thug poll workers.

Considering that the people at the polls are, presumably, there for the purpose of voting and that the Bible is not running for office, I fail to see how this is political. My niece posted that she was voting the Bible and I had no idea what she meant. She then posted the Bible verses it is based on and that also did not at any time suggest one candidate over another. And wearing religious garb of middle eastern countries definitely would suggest to me who they planned to vote for! Are we to also take off our necklaces and earrings that are crosses? We have lost the ability to have a non-denominational prayer at sporting events, salute the flag, show a nativity scene outside, and have the Ten Commandments posted. What else? Would it be okay for me to wear a pentagram? Where is the line? If you can’t wear a shirt mentioning voting, then we need also to stop handing out stickers that say, “I voted”. After all, it might offend someone who had not voted!!!!

Here in CT last go around, we were “asked” not to wear WWF items to the polls because that would “imply” that we were voting for Linda McMahon. That was later walked back. My husband bought a WWF hat that reads “You can’t see me” and wore it and got laughs.

Yeah I saw it. The most amazing thing was Bishop E W Jackson statement before those other two started speaking. The Bishop spoke at my church a couple weeks ago. He is not afraid of the truth and shame on those two who wants to keep the black people in chains to the democrate party. They never even spoke for the babies killed in the genocide that is killing off the black community.
