Report: Chris Christie Was Romney’s First Choice for VP

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was Mitt Romney’s first choice for running mate and was so close to being picked that some Romney advisers actually thought he’d been offered the job, Politico reported Saturday.
According to the report, the Romney campaign had tentatively planned to unveil Christie as the vice presidential pick in late July, just before Romney went off on his overseas trip. Instead, Romney paused just before the trip and decided on Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan the day after he returned. Romney offered Ryan the spot within a week, but Christie wasn’t told he was out until shortly before the Aug. 11 announcement.
Among the reported reasons Christie was set aside were that he was late to a couple of joint appearances with Romney and fears that his trademark brashness could prove a liability in the White House:
The tardiness rankled the by-the-book folks around Romney. As the vice-presidential selection ramped up, Christie was always at the top of the list, but always with an asterisk.
Some Romney loyalists thought he was too much about himself.
“He wouldn’t make a good Number Two,” one adviser said. That is a point that Christie often made himself, when brushing off talk that he would be chosen.
Advisers also fretted about the raw emotion that makes Christie so popular on TV and on the trail, fearing it might be a liability in the West Wing. In blunt language that Christie can appreciate, another official said: “The explosiveness had some risk.”
Romney was willing to overlook those reservations, and people close to the process describe a frenzy of vetting around Christie in mid-July. Then the intense back-and-forth suddenly halted, although Christie supporters in the campaign’s inner circle remained hopeful that he would still be picked after the foreign trip.
“It could still have happened,” said a person involved in the process.
Speculation swirled last year over whether Christie might make his own presidential bid until he definitively took himself out of the race and endorsed Romney. He’s been a vocal supporter of Romney’s and a popular figure on the campaign trail.
However, according to Politico, Christie “fell further from favor in Romney’s inner circle” with his primetime speech at the Republican National Convention, which the campaign felt could have contained more about Romney instead of focusing so heavily on Christie himself.
Christie has been in the national spotlight this week in the wake of the devastation brought to his state by Hurricane Sandy, including a much-publicized tour of the damage with President Barack Obama. Some close to Romney have reportedly been “irked” by the closeness between Christie and Obama.
“If Romney wins, it won’t be forgotten,” an adviser told Politico. “If Romney loses, it doesn’t matter.”

It wasn’t that many months ago that Obama set it up so Paul Ryan would have to sit right in front of Obama’s speaker’s podium at some meeting after Ryan had put forth the RYAN Budget..and be subjected to Obama’s Smart A. remarks. Yesterday all the polls (20+) went for Obama except one for Romney. Democrats will increase their count in the House and surprisingly will be a pick-up one in the Senate (that will be a shocker).
Right wing policies have been rejected by the people and all future leaders are trying to distance themselves from it. Liberalism had a slow death in 1992 and now the luster for radical conservatism is off.

If he can’t handle a disaster how could he handle being president? His stock has gone way down in my book. All normal for Roman Catholic. I don’t think the priest beat the kids up anymore however. LOL. I really like Ryan, I think he has smarts that Romney does not have. Even in the 80s those nuns were vicious, I got kicked around a few times in my Catholic school days. Now, there’s not many nuns and the priests are so laid back, my son doesn’t believe the stories we tell him about how mean priests and nuns were.

Having said that, this story makes me wonder if he also suffered from a wounded ego at having been passed over by Romney and giving Obama the welcome and photo op was payback.

Now, when Chris became governor of New Jersey, they just happened to lose 400 million dollars in educational assistance due to a “technicality.” Christie is overwhelmed and needs to share the burden of the destruction of his state. His picking Obama is short-sighted unless he is also planning on sharing the blame in the coming weeks.
Only a few of the -fema’s- generators are on line. Chris needs to get the guy that handled the logistics during the first desert war in Iraq. Hire him, and get other people out of his way. Declare a state of emergency, hire Wal-Mart to deliver food and toiletries. Get Lowe’s and Home Depot to see which can help the most. hire a couple non-union superintendents to handle the clean-up; Holmes to walk through and pick the houses worth saving and immediately haul off what isn’t worth saving. Any houses worth saving put them on stilts like us ‘dumb redneck’ southerns do. I know we aren’t as smart as Yankees; but, we expect Mother Nature to kick our butts once in awhile.

Obizmal couldn’t help his-[+ cohorts]- need for self aggrandizement as the hero’s that care about “the people”. It’s a great photo-op appearance for his faithful-[unlike W who declined to interfere w/rescue people]… OB-fiddling while his “show”campaign was stuck in Joyzy w/him, + his egotistical crew. Christie ran interference for R+R; while scoring a touchdown for his helpless constituents. It was a win-win despite the tragedy. That’s superior strategy @ work; WE need that to beat these liar/manipulators from now on…for decades ahead beyond election day + all the ones coming!

When a Governor allows unions to bully away help (The electrical crews from AL) and doesn’t say a peep, I don’t care what letter he has after his name. Christie is a bombastic man for sure, but not a conservative. When will the Ds ever see that it is about principle and not party?

I think he was not able to handle the situation, even for all his brashness, and he turned to Obama because the situation required more than he was capable of. Passing him over for a higher office was the right thing to do. Not because he needed help – he did the right thing asking for it – but because the praise came across as an obligation in payment for the help which after all, was his state’s right to expect.

All they seem to do is go to funerals and give the occasional speech. There just is not much for a Veep to do most of the time. I mean if Biden can handle it… LOL!
A high energy go-getter like Christie could still be put in a cabinet position (if he wanted it). Heck maybe in Romneys second term he will be out of the New Jersey Governors Mansion and could join the Cabinet then… (that is getting way ahead of ourselves though, lets just get through the next 4 days to the election!!!!)

Christie needed resources for the State he serves that could only be obtained by flattering the boy-king..
Plus, it set things up nicely for him to publicly slam Obama for being a liar if the chaos in NE Jersey persists….. Maybe next Sunday morning would be an appropriate time?.. On the news that night?… at the water cooler all day Monday… then elections the next day…
Christie’s gesture could easily flip to a big positive..
