Award-winning playwright and screenwriter David Mamet, an outspoken political convert to conservatism, has penned an open letter in the Los Angeles Jewish Journal to Jewish Americans planning to vote for President Barack Obama on Election Day.
Invoking Bible imagery in the title of his piece, “A Note to a Stiff-Necked People,” he implores Jewish voters to cast a ballot reflecting their most closely-held values, which he implies are more in line with Mitt Romney’s positions, though he never invokes the Republican presidential candidate’s name.
In the letter which is comprised of a series of rhetorical questions, he asks his coreligionists who have traditionally voted Democratic:
Are you prepared to explain to your children not the principles upon which your vote is cast, but its probable effects upon them?
Irrespective of your endorsement of liberal sentiments, of fairness and “more equal distribution,” will you explain to your children that top-down economic policies will increasingly limit their ability to find challenging and well-paid work, and that the diminution in employment and income will decrease their opportunity to marry and raise children?
Will you explain (as you have observed) that a large part of their incomes will be used to fund programs that they may find immoral, wasteful and/or indeed absurd?
And that the bulk of their taxes go to no programs at all, but merely service the debt you entailed on them?
Will you tell your children that a liberal government will increasingly marginalize, dismiss and weaken the support for and the safety of the Jewish state?
Will you tell them that, in a state-run economy, hard work may still be applauded, but that it will no longer be rewarded?
A prolific writer working in the overwhelmingly liberal entertainment industry, Mamet is uniquely placed to voice his concern that more government control in key sectors of society could impede a citizen’s ability to speak freely:
Will you explain that whatever their personal beliefs, tax-funded institutions will require them to imbibe and repeat the slogans of the left, and that, should they differ, they cannot have a career in education, medicine or television unless they keep their mouths shut?
Suggesting they give pause before pulling the lever for Obama, Mamet implies that voters in traditionally liberal communities can employ a “don’t ask, don’t tell” posture upon exiting the curtained booth:
Please remember that we have the secret ballot and, should you, on reflection, vote in secret for a candidate you would not endorse in public, you will not be alone.
Besides the award winning plays and films for which he is famous, David Mamet authored the book, The Secret Knowledge: On the Dismantling of American Culture in which he detailed his conversion from liberal champion to devoted conservative. In 2008, he wrote an op-ed in the The Village Voice, “Why I Am No Longer a ‘Brain-Dead Liberal.”
A tracking poll of American Jewish voters last week showed Obama at 69.3 percent with Romney at 29.7 percent. By contrast, Israeli Jews that were polled favor Romney 57 percent versus 22 percent for Obama.

Nov. 4, 2012 at 2:21pmI, too, believe that a lot of democrats/liberals are not vocal about voting for Romney. I have heard so much maligning, name calling and curses from “liberals” that I don’t blame people for not saying that they are actually for Romney. It’s sad though.
I think that the labels (Democrat, Republican, libertarians, liberal, conservative, progressive) have been redefined so many times that in actuality, many are of the same mind and heart, and yet belong to opposing groups because that’s what they grew up with or are expected to stick with.

Nov. 4, 2012 at 1:27pmTo the Jerk: if you mean that because of antisemitism, the Jews of Europe were isolated into smaller areas, you are correct. But, this was not the choice of the Jews; rather it was forced upon them because of the brutal antisemitic society around them. Also, labelling Jews as pro communist because of Marx is no more appropriate than labelling Christians as evil because of Hitler or Stalin. The truth is that there are wonderful Jews and wonderful Christians & there are also bad people in both religions. I don’t feel it is right to demonize anyone, as you seem to want to do. More importantly, I am hopeful that the good people of this great country of ours will vote in Romney who is clearly the best choice for America. Now, I won’t respond to you again (as my daughter says, I don’t want to feed the troll).

Nov. 4, 2012 at 1:54pmThis man’s pleas will fall upon def ears. Jews support leftist, progressive causes like abortion and gay marriage because it’s part of their agenda. Jews were despised in Europe when Hitler came to power because they were associated with Bolshevism. Most of the Vladamir Lenin’s goons in his power takeover were Jews. Jews are behind modern day Bolshevism in this country from their positions of power in Hollywood and news media. Some things never change. So to ask Jews not to vote for Obama is like asking blacks not to vote for Obama.
As I’ve said before, the Founding Fathers never anticipated an oligarchy of “chosen people” or Jews taking over our media in the late 1800s and then using that media for propaganda purposes, but it’s happened. If we didn’t have “chosen people” undermining the right in the media, we’d never have a Democratic president. The media is the propaganda arm of the Democratic Party (Communist Party).

Nov. 4, 2012 at 7:11pmWrong SillyFreshness: Jews became Communists because the brutality of your Christian ancestors in Central and Eastern Europe brutally butchered them and raped them one generation after the next. They simply gave up on the all powerful G-d that allowed the intensity of the pain that was life for a Jew in Eastern and Central Europe. True. America did not deserve this blow back for Ashkenazic Jewry’s rejection of G-d. But the essential reason for turning to Marxism and their new god, the suffering Proletariat, is that they were despised and hated for believing in their One G-d and not believing in Christ.

Nov. 4, 2012 at 1:57pmJews are not friends to conservatives. This “friendship” that conservatives have with Jews is not reciprocal. It’s a one way street. Nov. 5, 2012 at 7:09amJust to dispel some of the vile hate by some of you jackas—s, I repeat what I wrote on the next page. Actually Friedrich Engels took the original leading role in establishing Communism before Marx when he wrote the “Conditions of the Working Class in England”. Engels parents were Christian pietists. He and Marx co-authored the Communist Manifesto. Neither of them practiced Christianity or Judaism even though Engels’ parents were Christians and Marx was a Jew because his mother was a Jew. And yes, because of previous earlier comments that I wrote, a disproportionate amount of early communists were Jews. They had rejected G-d in the 17th and 18th Centuries because of the pain and anguish of being raped and being slaughtered by Christians in the Ukraine and in Russia. As said before, this does not excuse taking out the backlash on their new country America. Yet, there are many if not most who did not. From Jonas Salk to Irving Berlin to Edward Teller to Louis B. Mayer, many American Jews made great contributions to the United States and to the larger world. One has to be seriously careful with any generalizations. Most American Jews were not Communists and did not support Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, no matter what they were or were not guilty of. As a matter of fact the top “Inquisitor” on McCarthy’s House Committee of Un-American Activities was a Jew named Roy Cohn! Nov. 4, 2012 at 12:25pmListen, Jews were historically a wandering people, setting up their communities in other sovereign nations, all the while remaining a nation of people linked by a common culture. Thus, a Jew living in Russia had more in common with a Jew living in Germany, than either had with their host Russian or German people. They were truly internationalists.
Each community lived, more or less, like a modern day kibbutz, a commune. As a whole, or in total, they formed international communes, communism. This is why, how, the philosophy of communism found its birth in Jews, Moses Hess and Karl Marx. They wrote of their world view as developed from their culture… the whole is greater than the individual.
This is why David Mamet today writes, “Irrespective of your endorsement of liberal sentiments, of fairness and “more equal distribution,”… .” It speaks to their core.

Historically inaccurate yet again. The small communities Jews lived in weren’t communes in many cases. Perhaps in the Pale of Settlement that might be a somewhat accurate description, but for western Europe Jews were often not permitted to own land and so became traders and craftsmen. That’s why surnames like Glazman, Goldberg, Goldman, Silver, etc. are common among Jews. The original ghettos weren’t communes, but rather walled villages and small cities. They were the middle class.

As far as other comments, I don’t think anyone should be called stupid, even though we really disagree with those on the left. Since the creation of the U.S the amount of people who vote has been steadily decreasing, complacent in just getting told what to do because people have decided both sides are wrong, but left with no place to go. Nov. 4, 2012 at 11:35am@DeOppressoLiber — person of Jewish faith here: yes, there are some of us who are actual thinking conservatives.
Unfortunately, the Jewish love of all things liberal goes back to FDR. He was key in bringing down Hitler, so they associate him with being a protector of Jews. We know history that FDR was NOT a friend to the Jews. Several examples: (1) he listened to reform “Rabbi” Wise who advised FDR not to initiate rescue efforts (The Agudath Israel begged FDR for help); (2) FDR turned away a ship full of Jews, the MS Missouri, from porting in America; it was forced to go back to Europe; (3) FDR knew about, and COULD have done more to bomb train tracks leading to concentration camps, but chose not to.
I am a Gen-Xer, rather than a baby-boomer. Fortunately, my generation does not have the psychological crutch of loving FDR by default. I live in a conservative are of Brooklyn; 99% of my friends are conservative. We are politically conservative, Sabbath observant, and are deeply concerned for the future of this great country that has given us Jews the freedom to practice our religion openly and proudly.
Although Jews, as a whole, voted 80-20 for Obama in 2008, we religious Jews voted 80-20 for McCain. Unfortunately, we make up about 7% of the total population of Jews. Non-religious Jews are having less than 2.0 children per family, while religious Jews are having large families. Eventually, Jews could swing back to being a conservative voting bloc.

Nov. 4, 2012 at 9:52amI am Jewish and PROUDLY and LOUDLY anti-obama! Was in 2008 and now. It sickens me to my core that Jews(or any Americans) would vote obama and INFURIATES me that “no one will ever know if you don’t vote obama”! If you love America, Israel and Freedom, SCREAM IT FROM THE RAFTERS!!! Do NOT be a coward! STAND UP!!!!

Nov. 4, 2012 at 10:23amA true Antichrist would take Christ’s teachings, and tweak them a little to benefit the flesh, and tyranny. Case in point an Antichrist would teach that people are supposed to crucify the flesh, that is the human body. But crucifying the flesh would send the signal to your mind and soul that your human vessel is a powerful substance, but of course it is the portion of spirit that caves into the body – therefore it’s the portion of spirit that must needs crucified.

Nov. 4, 2012 at 10:50amyeah Gary Johnson 2012 or write in Paul, because other 2 support NDAA and we all know what the goverment did in Germany with legislation like that. Also both support gun confiscation which was done before mass murder. Also both support hr 347 a crackdown on protests near federal buildings, oppressive goverments did that to before they enslaved or murdered people.

Nov. 4, 2012 at 10:54pmBeing Anti-King won our independence. Being Anti-Communist won the Cold War.
It boils down to whether you worship a man or a higher power. Free markets and free society are of a higher power. Closed societies (Islamic) and markets(Communist) are run by men.

Nov. 4, 2012 at 11:02amHi Kickagrandma,
You have to answer the question asked before hitting the “submit” button.
This new feature stops the trolls from writing scripts that flood the tip section.
Hope this helps. Also, after the first tip the “Have a tip?” disappears so just refresh the page or switch to another story and then come back to the one you were on.

Nov. 4, 2012 at 9:43amIt’s funny how people are so wrapped up in DNA descent. Lol, even modern Native Americans are not the same spirit, and souls that dwelt in the vessels of their forefathers.

Nov. 4, 2012 at 9:35amThank goodness he’s speaking up like this. There are a lot of Liberal Jews who are ‘closet’ Conservatives and need permission to go against the Liberal communities within which they live. I hope it makes a HUGE difference!

Nov. 4, 2012 at 10:09pmFrom 78% down to about 67% for Obama. Since most live in NY or FLA, the only real difference may be FLA. Retirees are more conservative minded.

Nov. 4, 2012 at 9:32amMany voting blocks are more in line with the Rs but somehow the Ds have them convinced that we are Satan and they are good and compassionate. The Hispanic community are more in line with us as far as their values are concerned but the Ds have a better ground game and have them brainwashed into thinking they are Dems.
