In terms of American success stories, or in this case, Hungarian-American success stories, most are familiar with billionaire investor and far-left activist George Soros. Few, however, know about Soros’s conservative counterpart Thomas Peterffy, the Hungarian-born billionaire who founded Interactive Brokers, one of the world’s leading online brokerage firms. A few weeks ago Petterfy became in essence an unexpected star of the 2012 campaign when he released a powerful and highly personal ad decrying the socialism he endured, and ultimately, fled in Hungry and comparing it to what he is now witnessing occur in the United States.

Peterffy’s Forbes profile describes a little about this success story and critic of socialism:

Born in Budapest in 1944 during a Russian bombing raid, Thomas Peterffy immigrated to the United States in 1965. When he arrived in New York he spoke no English. In 1977 Peterffy left his job designing commodities trading software and purchased his own seat on the American Stock Exchange where he began trading options. In 1993 he launched the electronic brokerage firm Interactive Brokers. Petterfy reportedly spent at least $8 million to air his ads nationally on CNN since October 11 — a savvy move considering that is where he likely felt independents and undecided voters could be best reached.

“I grew up in a socialist country,” the American success story says in the ad, which focuses on his life and move to America. “And I have seen what that does to people. There is no hope, no freedom, no pride in achievement.”

Peterffy also quips that in socialist nations, the wealthy do become poorer, but so, too, do the poor.

“And that’s what I see happening here.”

Peterffy reportedly spent upwards of $8 million to air his ad nationally — a savvy move considering that is likely where he felt independent and undecided voters could best be reached.

The ad is also said to be airing on local stations in Cleveland, Milwaukee, and across Florida in both English and Spanish. The ad has generated a tremendous amount of buzz and is already being being considered one of the must-see ads this election.
