Octopus Hunter Receives Death Threats, Blacklisted Over Legal Catch After Photos Go Viral — See Them Here

In the same way some might enjoy fishing or hunting game, others like Dylan Mayer hunt octopus — and it’s perfectly legal. But the 19-year-old from Washington has received death threats after photos of his latest catch were posted on the Internet.

Last week, Mayer and a friend caught a Giant Pacific octopus in the waters of Alki Cove 2 near Seattle, Washington. Other divers took pictures of Mayer holding the female octopus and wrote a blog post about his actions, which was then linked to by Northwest Diving Institute and has gone viral since.

The blog Rapture of the Deep posted photos of Mayer in his diving gear holding the octopus and wrote:

The octopus was clearly in distress and fighting, but the divers repeatedly struck the mantle and then carried it up the beach and to the parking lot, writhing and squirming, where it was unceremoniously thrown into the back of a red Ford pickup truck.

Several local divers including Bob B. and Mark S. confronted the captors and and began asking questions. The individuals clearly did not care that they had just taken a beautiful octopus from one of the most popular dive sites in the state of Washington. The divers tried to reason with the hunters and explained that people come from all over the world to this site to see these GPOS, which have been likened to pets within the local community.

My Northwest reported Bob Bailey expounding further on his feelings about the hunting activity:

“Duck hunting is legal. It’s perfectly legal. Imagine how you would feel if, while you were enjoying these ducks in the park, someone walked up and shot them. That’s very much analogous with how divers feel when someone pulls an octopus out of a popular site.”

My Northwest then reported that Bailey and others have spread the word to such an extent that Mayer and his friend are now banned from many scuba shops in the Puget Sound area.

“Those people didn’t do that out of emotion,” Bailey said to My Northwest. “They’re protecting their business. People come here from all over the world and they pay money to come here to see these animals. So there is an economic interest in protecting them.”

Watch this local news report about the community outrage:

In the report, a shop owner said that some of the groups asking that dive shops not provide service to the men who caught the octopus have done so in a threatening manner.

According to KOMO News, Mayer said it was his dream to become a rescue diver, but he now feels that this aspiration could be jeopardized as he has recently been refused from diving schools.

But these aren’t the only consequences Mayer is experiencing. My Northwest reported parents of the two hunters said they’ve even received threatening calls at home.

KOMO News reported Mayer saying though that he eats octopus for meat. He and his friend had the appropriate license for catching the octopus, which allows for one per day. The Giant Pacific octopus is a legal species to capture as well.

“It’s no different than fishing. It’s just a different animal,” he said.

Some reported that Mayer had taken the female octopus from her nest, but Mayer told KOMO this is not true and that an official even verified it:

The involved game warden, Wendy Willette, said Mayer did not do anything wrong.

“I think the timing, manner and place where the harvest occurred may be the issue. It could have been done at a better time,” she said. “It’s like deer hunting. You don’t kill a deer while kids are viewing it, and I think it’s a similar problem here. You need to be sensitive to other drivers and people if you’re going to be a sportsman.”

Watch KOMO’s report:

The families of the two boys issued a statement, which read in part:

Our sons are good young men and do not deserve the backlash that this has created. Our families do not deserve to live in fear based on the threats that have been made. Please keep this issue in perspective. This was about a couple of young men that were going fishing for the day. Nothing more. Nothing less. They were not aware they were doing anything wrong.

The statement continues saying the men had never intended to do anything malicious and yet they are still apologizing to those who were offended. The men are described in the statement as amateur divers who “mistake made from inexperience and unfamiliarity of the culture of diving.”

They didn’t do anything to deserve threats or fear in their lives. I wouldn’t eat Octopus or squirrel because they were designed by God to keep the waters and the earth clean. Same reason I wouldn’t eat a vulture. It keeps the earth clean. They are unclean animals and not for human consumption. But if you want to put that stuff in your body you have free will to buck the designer!

You can’t cherry pick the Bible to make it conform to your own philosophy. In Acts 10 God showed Peter all the animals of the earth that were considered “unclean” and then told Peter to “kill and eat” (because he was no longer under the law) We were put here to please God and given dominion over the Earth and everything in it.

@Warriorswife even if i accept your belief that we have dominion over the earth, that surely comes with the responsibility to look after it and perhaps even cherish gods creation. These kids aren’t the real problem the problem is the industrial and human waste and chemical runnoff that is tossed into the oceans every year. The garbage vortex in the pacific ocean is the size of Texas. If what you believe is true then I would think at some point god will take it away from us, due to being the selfish children we are.

JROOK, The Bible calls on us to be good stewards of the earth, our own money, our own children because they are all gifts from God. Man, it says was Created in the image of God, (Imagine that! God says I made you to look like Me) a little lower than the angels. We were given knowledge to rule the earth, and we have. With knowledge comes great responsibility aka stewardship. Unfortunately, the responsible ones usually have to fix or remake what the irresponsible destroy. There is nothing wrong with responsibly harvesting animals, crops etc to eat. I don’t endorse killing animals for a trophy to just waste the meat. We sure can’t villainize every person who harvests an animal.

@warriorswife: how come every vision in the bible is taken as figurative except that vision? could it be possible that God wasn’t telling him it was ok to eat unclean animals and instead the unclean animals represented the gentiles (who were viewed as “unclean” people by the jews) and so God gave him that vision to tell him to also spread the gospel to the gentiles especially since before that vision the gospel wasn’t shared with the gentiles. i would also like to point out that Jesus had said specifically that he did not come to do away with the law (the dietary laws are part of the law) wouldn’t suggesting otherwise be calling Jesus a liar?

The only thing I disagree with you about here is the premise… which is that the “unclean” animals are good for Human consumption. Are we free to eat them under grace? Yes. But they are God’s “clean up crew” and are not the best things to put into our bodies. Wisdom says the Old Testament dietary law makes sense and should be followed for our health’s sake not because we have fallen from grace back into law.
We are also free to eat food sacrificed to idols but admonished not to for our conscience sake… that to me means we are free not to as well…..

Squirrel egg? That’s wrong. The octopus in the picture is a close cousin of the NW tree octopus, which lives on squirrel and rat eggs. Now this is a problem because Bigfoot needs the tree octopus for protein stores going into a bad winter ( made worse by human caused global warming). We know Bigfoot is the main protector of pigeon hatchlings.

It is a little beyond me that Mayer expresses a desire to be a rescue diver; a diver that risks his own life to save those of others in distress, when he shows such callousness in his dealings with other creatures. I happen to love the octpus and have dove and observed them in years past. Their level of intelligence is exhibited everyday on their home turf. Mayer obviously ignored this and decided to engage in some sort of life and death power struggle. Very adolescent and deadly and frankly disgusting. If he cannot respect the environment he chooses to engage with, well then he should not be partnered with by those who do respect it; ie the dive shops.

God placed animals on the earth for our use (whatever that may entail) and they should not be put on the same plane of importance as human life. Everything this boy did was completely legal and he should not be discriminated against because he wants to hunt an octopus. These dive schools are ridiculous and so are you.

So tell me, Brae- what lack of compassion is there in hunting and fishing and how does it relate to what one does for a living that requires a passion for people? I suppose you think it’s more compassionate for a shark to eat the octopi (of this instance) or to let the animal die of starvation or over population?
There’s got to be a short circuit in people whose brains relate human emotion to animals.
You say, “…Mayer obviously ignored this and decided to engage in some sort of life and death power struggle. Very adolescent and deadly and frankly disgusting. If he cannot respect the environment he chooses to engage with, well then he should not be partnered with by those who do respect it; ie the dive shops…”
Obviously, you have no idea what diving for anything entails- going into a foreign environment and gathering food. As for respecting the environment: what part of the environment did he disresepct? You presume to have more respect for it, but you obviously have no respect for human beings, so your ‘respect’ is hardly real. ‘those who respect it’, such as dive shops? Those people obviously have no respect for either the environment nor people- they’re liberal communist tree huggers, Godless baby killers- and you show them respect?
Frankly, you’re very adolescent and disgusting.

Sorry fellow Republicans I have to disagree with most of you. If any of you were educated on the animal you would have a lot more respect for it. Being a biology major throughout college I actually had the oportunity to study and disect this curious animal and its an amazing creature. Respect nature here. The kid didn’t need an Octopus to survive! Obvious by the insulting photos he took. When you kill to eat, you’re preparing that kill ASAP. He wanted for an Art project is what he said first and foremost. It just a lack of respect and to do it in an area where people dive for photo ops and recreation is disrespectful. There is a time and place for everything and he chose poorly.

They think it’s cruelty to animals, but have no problem going to Kroger or Wal-Mart or a butcher, getting the weeks old meat in that pretty little cellophane packaging and making their dinner with it. They should go take a look at how much of an assembly line a butcher shop is, then tell me if they think hunting is still the cruel one. Not that I have any problem eating meat from a butcher shop, but I’m also not a lib saying hunting is cruel, lol.

I’m willing to bet that the vast majority of people causing this outcry have no problem whatsoever with abortion-on-demand.

Perspective, people. It’s all about perspective.

If the fellas caught it to eat it, and it’s not against the law to fish the octopus. I believe they do have a right to catch and eat. But to catch and entertain, well that’s a different thing. That isn’t what “ethical hunters and fishing people do”.
what the story doesn’t say is, octupus breed, and die off like salmon, and like many other aquatic life at the end of their life cycles. Likewise this octopus is going to die really soon.
I do though disagree with Animal Rights nuts out there who put this misguided belief these animals are “pet creatures” with Walt Disney names and such. Much like some other Animal Rights enthusists who befriend sort of Grizzly Bears which later on snack on the Animal Rights nuts. From my own area, animal rights nuts advocating hunting bans have put more animal life in danger from not being culled. It’s far worse watching animals of the wild starving because of the “so called” good intentions of the animal rights activists. But animal rights activist rarely photograph the errors of their ways, only big bad hunters.

SOME people do not believe that humans are part of the food chain. They also think that their hamburgers come from the Beef Fairy and that no animals were harmed in their making. Nature IS a beautiful creation. But, WE ARE A PART OF IT and we need sustenance as much as they do. I doubt that tourism will be that great when people are starving. At least, these guys eat what they kill, as opposed to others that hire a “hit man” (the butcher) to do their killing for them.

“The Beef Fairy” ~ That’s perfect. I was watching a program where some people were lost in the woods and they killed squirrels, ducks, etc. for food. One of the men that did this said, “I normally wouldn’t kill an animal. It’s not right, but we were starving. People should not kill animals unless it is an emergency. There are plenty of stores that sell meat.” I have always wondered how he thought the meat got to the store. Now I know, “The Beef Fairy”!

Lol, All you have to say is that Liberalism is a mental disorder. I say bottom feeders don’t divide themselves from bottom feeders.

You are right. Liberalism is a mental disorder and liberalism causes stupidity. Liberals are the one’s calling these divers threatening them because the legally killed a sea creature. Liberals rather save the life of an animal than a human being. Can we say ‘abortion’? Sure we can.
