The November 2012 cover asks, “Will the Constitution Be Disarmed?” For decades, the anti-gun crowd has sought to weaken law-abiding American citizens’ constitutional right to bear arms. From presidential candidates whom many don’t trust on gun rights to the Fast and Furious scandal to the multiple exploitations of tragedies to legislation making gun ownership more difficult to lies that gun control actually reduces crime, it has become clear that the state of the Second Amendment is growing more tenuous.

Below is an excerpt from Jason Howerton’s cover story (“Disarming the Constitution”). His full report is available only in the November 2012 issue of TheBlaze Magazine.

It’s one of the most important provisions found in the U.S. Constitution. George Mason warned during Virginia’s convention to ratify the Constitution in 1788 that “to disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them.”

Despite warnings of our Founding Fathers, the fight to preserve the Second Amendment seems like a never-ending battle. After every mass shooting, after every gun-related crime in America, calls to strengthen gun laws (or create new ones) become deafening. The theory is that the fewer guns there are, the less gun violence there will be. However, as history has shown, criminals will always find a way to obtain firearms, legally or illegally.

New anti-gun legislation is constantly being proposed as lawmakers (mostly liberal Democrats) attempt to exploit tragedies and scandals to promote harsher gun laws. Most recently, Americans faced an election choice important to our right to bear arms.

THE ANTI-GUN MOVEMENT’S KIND OF CANDIDATE (AND PARTY)

Though Obama repeatedly claimed a belief in the right to bear arms and even signed a law to allow firearms in national parks, there was undoubtedly a perception throughout his first term (and even before he was elected) that Obama is anti-gun.

The Left’s crusade against the Second Amendment was touted by its standard-bearer and favorite presidential candidate, who did and said plenty over the years to cause worry; consider a few examples:

In 1996, while running for the Illinois state Senate, Obama endorsed the Illinois handgun ban. He filled out a questionnaire and stated he supported legislation to “ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns,” to “ban assault weapons” and to impose “mandatory waiting periods and background checks.”

In the state Senate, he supported requiring the licensing and registering of gun owners.

On a 1998 “Illinois National Political Awareness Test” from Project Vote Smart, he stated his support for a “ban [on] the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons.”

In 2000, he co-sponsored an Illinois bill to limit handgun purchases to one per month.

In 2004, the liberal candidate for the U.S. Senate stated his anti-gun view pretty clearly, according to the Chicago Tribune, when he said, “I am constantly on record and will continue to be on record as opposing concealed carry.”

In 2005, then-Sen. Obama opposed a bill protecting firearms manufacturers from lawsuits for harm resulting from unlawful misuse of their products.

At a 2008 fundraiser with a liberal, anti-gun San Francisco crowd, the left-wing candidate famously described Americans in rural Pennsylvania and the Midwest as “bitter” people who “cling to guns.”

Also in 2008, when asked about the D.C. handgun ban, Obama indicated that he believed it was constitutional and supported it and that “just because you have an individual right does not mean that the state or local government can’t constrain the exercise of that right.”

This record—a record the anti-gun crowd loved—made supporters of the Second Amendment nervous. And it’s what makes them leery of many liberals in the Democratic Party.

THE SO-CALLED ‘PRO-GUN’ CANDIDATE

Though better than the Left’s stance on guns, Second Amendment supporters were not totally comfortable with their 2012 Republican presidential alternative—a situation indicative of the tenuous state of gun rights in America. Romney’s record on gun rights was somewhat inconsistent, to say the least.

While campaigning for a Senate seat in 1994 against liberal lion Ted Kennedy, Romney declared that he supported strong gun laws and that he did not “line up with the NRA.”

During a 2002 Massachusetts gubernatorial debate, Romney backed his state’s restrictive gun laws, saying, “We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts; I support them. I won’t chip away at them; I believe they protect us and provide for our safety.”

While governor of Massachusetts in 2007, he proclaimed his support for the Second Amendment, but just a few years earlier, he had supported a permanent “assault-weapons ban,” which was signed by his pen. At the 2004 bill signing, he said of the guns being banned, “These are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.”

But by 2008, the Republican had fully changed his tune, having become a “lifetime member” of the NRA in 2006. He told the political blog Instapundit in 2008 that he does not support “any gun-control legislation,” including a new assault-weapons ban.

Though the pro-Second Amendment voters’ only real choice for 2012 was finally saying all the right things, it’s no wonder Americans are worried about their gun rights today.

USING ‘FAST AND FURIOUS’ AGAINST GUN RIGHTS

The infamous federal gun-walking scandal known as Operation Fast and Furious was initiated in 2009 by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The agency allowed more than 2,500 guns to “walk” across the Mexico border and into the hands of murderous Mexican drug cartel members. Officials claim the goal was to track the guns and dismantle some of the larger cartels. Instead, the guns were lost and not seen again until they started turning up at murder scenes, including that of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and hundreds of Mexican citizens.

So far, no heads have rolled as a result of Fast and Furious. In fact, while congressional investigators fight to get to the bottom of the failed operation, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has obstructed the investigation and President Obama has invoked executive privilege to ensure key Fast and Furious documents never see the light of day.

Liberal anti-gun members of Congress, the media and many on the American Left seized the opportunity to call for more gun control in the United States. …

CBS News found evidence indicating that ATF officials involved in running Fast and Furious used the gun sales they oversaw to call for gun control. “We are looking at anecdotal cases to support a demand letter on long gun multiple sales,” ATF Field Ops Assistant Director Mark Chait e-mailed to Bill Newell, the special agent in charge of Operation Fast and Furious in Phoenix. “[T]his case could be a strong supporting factor if we can determine how many multiple sales of long guns occurred during the course of this case.”

  It’s too large and dangerous of a logistical problem for them to even attempt to take our firearms by force. That path would terminate not only his presidency, it may well terminate the U.S. government in toto. They know this, so they won’t try it.

  You are absolutely correct. The thought that they would go door to door to round them up is crazy. They can’t/won’t do it. They’ll start with bullets. They’ll tax the crap out of them like cigarettes. They can eventually ban them. They could do the same with gunpowder. “What if terrorist stocked up on gunpowder?” There you go…banned.
  
  More likely though is that they’ll get you to give them away. They know who the gun owners are through the purchase process. All they have to do is control some or all aspects of the Maslow Hierarchy and say “we’ll give you X but you have to give us your gun(s)”. Perhaps another scenario is that gun owners are now 10X times more likely to get audited. Maybe they get lower priority in healthcare (since they are higher risks of course). The government can turn many screws to get you to comply and “willingly” give up your guns. Many will. Others won’t and they will be hunted down like dogs as a message to others who think resisting is an option.

  It is easy for them to eventually take all the guns out of society…
  They aren’t going to try and pry them from your hands or even regulate them to death… they are going after the ammo makers and putting restrictions on how much ammo you can buy at a time and what types of ammo you can buy…
  eventually there will only be ammo left that works in hunting rifles and shotguns….and then they will limit that based on solid slug, birdshot…gauge…and so on…making it harder and harder to find ammo that fits the gun you want to buy…so people will just stop buying them…and then the gun manufactures dry up and blow away….
  it is already happening in the most liberal states…..ILL, CA, NYC….CA only lets you buy 1 box of handgun ammo per month…50 rounds per month…most people blow that at the range in an hour…

It wont be as hard as one might think with half of the country on the dole. They have already sold themselves. Miss one check and they will throw their guns out the front door. We may be armed but we are not disciplined.
Look at Cristy, tough guy, but NJ had no money. Its hard to be independent when your are living in moms basement.

Unfortunately for the there is that whole, “the rights of the people shall not be infringed” part. As much as they try…. If you take away the 2nd you might as well take away all of them, because the 2nd amendment is your guarantee. Take them all away and turn this place into Nazi Germany. Hell we are already on our way, and 1/2 of the voting public in the US is fine with that. I’m not. I won’t disarm. I swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution when I was 18. I’m no longer in the service, but I take that oath seriously. You wan’t them, come and get them.

  Each and every president for the past couple of decades has been going around congress using fiat executive orders. The other method is signing statement in which a president will sign a bill and note exceptions. Our whole government needs an overhaul, and not just the two parties.

No reasoning, no patriotic words, no proclaiming of constitutional rights or rights from God, no praying, no hope and change, nothing replaces that check in the mail or by direct deposit. Those who get that will fight tooth and nail to keep it and will physical fight you if you try to take it away. America has passed the balancing point. That is what Obama wanted. It will take a revolution to change it.

  How about a federal personal property tax on firearms? Then when they come for you it will be because of the IRS. Not coming to deny you your freedom but because you are a tax evader, .. greedy .. selfish. .. and the public can’t support a greedy tax evader.

Have you noticed the shift in some media programs? Now many liberal programs are making the claim about Republicans that Conservatives were making about liberals. In that Progressives are saying that Mitt Romney was saying the same thing over and over again until people believed it was true.

I’m not sure the Central Planners will attempt to take guns at this point in time because that’s when it would all begin to go down; the beginning of America’s second Civil War.

If the progressives manage to little-piece-by-little-piece the erosion of rights over the course of several generations – which they actually have up to this point, they’ll still achieve their ends. The vast majority of this country’s citizenry by that point will have become essentially impotent; the kids dumbed-down even more so than now (if that is possible), and the elderly clinging for dear life to those few thousand dollars in Social Security and degraded health care.

It’s certainly not a pretty picture, but I believe this is how it will continue to play out. The only way to stop it is a massive, massive revolution in the very near future and I’m not sure enough people are up for it.

  Nah, won’t take generations, it will just take a few regulations from the EPA on the manufacture of ammunition and firearms (with waivers for those that exclusively supply government agencies). It’ll take just a few years rather than generations.

  Yeah, but you have to think that the think that if they do things too suddenly, they’ll get overrun. That’s why I am saying they’re going to do continue to do it gradually over generations as each new one accepts willfully fewer rights.

  Almost every facet of your life has been put into a socialist framework. You have almost no natural rights that you will exercise without the government grinding your teeth into the pavement. At what point does the tree get refreshed?   Will Obama do it? I don’t know. I know he may try in increments, but I also know that I and most other gun owners won’t cede one single firearm to him, so in essence, it would be a stalemate.

  Thank you for your respectful reply to my post…i do not see that alot on this site…Here are my thoughts on what you said—Independent-minded would objectively concede that no gun laws have been weakened during Obama’s first term; therefore objectively thinking, there is nothing to indicate he is going to drastically strip away gun-rights…That whole “He is going to take away your guns” is an age-old dog whistle tactic used by the GOP when they are desperate….
  
  Over the past 25 years, over 4 different administrations both republican and democrat, gun-control laws were passed, no civil wars broke out in the streets…Romney himself as governor even signed a gun-control bill into law..However, we still see this pathetic meme that its the boogeyman Obama who is going to take away your guns….laughable at best…

  I figured out the fear ploy a long time ago. I do know that the incremental path is a possibility, it happens today in CA and IL and other hard blue states, so it’s not without recent precedent. That said, any move on firearms during this second term would likely cause some very severe blowback to the administration and Congress. I simply doubt they’re going to do much. It should not go without noting though that Obama recently said he’s wanting to reinstate the assault weapon ban, and is interested in sidearm restrictions as well. What he can do, as opposed to what he can say, of course are likely two different things.

  Keep in mind too that Beck thinks Texas is a bastion of liberty, because he came there from New York City. Stalingrad may seem like a bastion of freedom compared to NYC. Don’t get me wrong, I love Texans, but I suspect that it’s already too compromised.
  
  When I rode through Wyoming and the Dakotas this last summer, Texans were cursing their own state because they couldn’t open carry, as they talked to me and I was open carrying, and they stated that any chance of freedom in Texas was more or less dead on arrival given the demographics changing so drastically due to illegal immigration.
