Congress’ Only Atheist Loses His Re-Election Campaign After 40-Year Career
It’s widely known that Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.), 80, is Congress’ only known atheist. The outspoken politician has touted his non-belief on numerous occasions, serving as a champion to atheists and agnostics across America. But on Tuesday, Stark’s supporters were delivered a blow when he was defeated by fellow Democrat Eric Swalwell.

The congressman, who was first elected in 1972 and who has been in office for the past 40 years, will no longer serve as a voice for secularists. Notably, Swalwell, a 31-years-old city councilman and county prosecutor, used Stark’s vote against the national motto (“In God We Trust”) to deride his opponent.
The Los Angeles Times has more about the heated race:
Stark faced a tough race because of two big political changes in California: the political map drawn by an independent citizens commission that put him in a new district a bit less liberal, and the state’s new top-two primary system that set up the Democrat-versus-Democrat clash.
Stark finished ahead of Swalwell in the three-candidate primary, 42.1% to 36.2%. Swalwell is a deputy district attorney who was elected in 2010 to the city council of Dublin, a suburb of 46,000 people in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was an intern to former Rep. Ellen Tauscher in 2001-02.

The soon-to-be former congressman is known for being among the most liberal House members. Over the years, aside from his atheism, he has pushed for defense cuts and for the creation of the a so-called “Department of Peace.” During George W. Bush’s presidency, Stark notably said that troops went to Iraq to ”get their heads blown off for the president’s amusement.”
In the past, TheBlaze has reported about Stark’s public praise of the national atheist activist movement. The Friendly Atheist, a secular blogger who covers non-theism, describes some of the congressman’s attachments to the community:
Stark came out as a “non-theist” in 2007, making him the first sitting member of Congress to ever do so. In addition to recognizing the National Day of Reason on the floor of Congress, he spoke (via video) at the Reason Rally earlier this year. Stark had served in Congress since 1973, making him the longest-serving Congressperson currently from California (and fifth longest-serving overall).
With Stark poised to exit office, atheists are holding out for Kyrsten Sinema’s potential victory in Arizona. Sinema is a bi-sexual House candidate who, like the soon-to-exit congressman, is a non-theist.

I don’t know this politician well, but he appears to have had the courage of his convictions, and it’s demeaning to suggest he’ll change them upon death. I prefer to believe in a God who will teach and correct, rather than punish.

Poetic liberty here. No secret with the dormancy.
If you lay under ground ‘dormant’ for six months, would this not be the same as death.?
I believe so, and I’m sure you do as well. The point is ‘resurrection’ in both cases.
I really do not care about the politician at this heading; this is far more relevant.

If humans did, then yes, we would be dead. The flower, no. That’s the beauty of scientific investigation. We can determine that what looks like a “lifeless flower” is really in a state of lowered metabolic rate, awaiting more suitable conditions. So, no. No resurrection in the case of the flower.

Hindus “FEEL” their gods, muslims “FEEL” allah, the ancient Nords “felt” Thor, etc. A feeling is not proof whatsoever, just ask any prosecutor. Witnesses might believe with all their being that the defendant did the crime, but feelings are worthless, you need evidence. Feelings are notoriously unreliable, so don’t believe something because you “feel” that it’s true, believe in something because the evidence points to it.

Posted on November 7, 2012 at 12:55pmFYI:
Luke 10:18 reads:
“And He said to them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven”.
The genius in question claims that the word “lightning” in Hebrew is barak, and that the word for “heaven” is bamah.
Therefore, this scripture in Hebrew would read “I beheld satan as Barack Obama”.
He even relates it to Isaiah 14:12 which reads:
How are you fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How are you cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations!
That is a blatant, outrageous LIE.
Even IF his translation were correct (it ISN’T, but even IF it were], it WOULDN’T SAY “I beheld satan as Barack Obama”.
It would say “I beheld satan AS barak FALL FROM bamah”.
However, that’s NOT what it says. The Greek VERB for “fall” is in aorist active participle, which indicates the action HAD ALREADY TAKEN PLACE, so the LITERAL translation into English would be:
“I was beholding satan, as barak from the bamah having fallen”.
The use of the word barak means NOTHING, and PROVES NOTHING: barak is a very common Semitic name and surname. Two well known examples are Israel’s former Prime Minister Ehud Barak, and Egypt’s former President Hosni Mubarak. There’s even a famous entertainer named Shakira Mebarak.
While the word barak in

Posted on November 7, 2012 at 1:01pmWhile the word barak in Hebrew does mean “lightning”, the word bamah DOES NOT MEAN “heaven” or “sky”.
The word “bamah” means “high place” [Ezekiel 20:29].
ANY “high place” here on earth would be a bamah, including the altars where sacrifices to idols were made.
The Hebrew word for “sky” or “heaven” is shamayim.
Furthermore, shamayim is also the Hebrew word used in Isaiah 14:12,13, when it says “how are you fallen from heaven, O Lucifer”, which is the second scripture they give as “evidence” for their ludicrous theory.
Therefore the CORRECT translation of Luke 10:18 into Hebrew is:
“I was beholding satan, as barak from the shamayim having fallen”.
NOWHERE does it say in that passage that Jesus saw satan as Barack Obama.
