For First Time, Same-Sex Marriage Legalized Through Popular Vote in Two States

Ballot measures legalizing same-sex marriage passed in Maryland and Maine Tuesday, marking the first time the practice became legal through a popular vote following unsuccessful attempts in 32 different states since 1998.

“For the first time, voters in Maine and Maryland voted to allow loving couples to make lifelong commitments through marriage – forever taking away the right-wing talking point that marriage equality couldn’t win on the ballot,” Chad Griffin of the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay-rights group, told the Associated Press.

Earlier this year, Barack Obama became the first sitting president to endorse the legalization of same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage is currently legal in six states and the District of Columbia through laws passed by the legislature or court orders.

In late October, a poll conducted for The Baltimore Sun found that Maryland voters were evenly divided on whether to make same-sex marriage legal, with opposition rising in recent weeks despite the outspoken support of Democratic Governor Martin O’Malley and House Minority Whip Rep. Steny Hoyer. With 93 percent reported, 52 percent supported Maryland’s Question 6 legalizing same-sex marriage, according to The Baltimore Sun. Voters supported same-sex marriage in Maine 53 to 47 percent Tuesday.

At 1:14am, The Seattle Times reported that initial returns in Washington state showed Referendum 74 appearing to be winning approval. Ref. 74 would allow same-sex couples to apply for marriage licenses in Washington as early as Dec. 6.

  YOU read a book or two.. Start with a math book. Islam, Judaism, and Christianity all believe their is just one God. Unless your are a poly-theist, i assume you do as well. They just have differing views on God’s intent/ message.
  If you and an another have differing views on how chicken tastes best, your opinion doesn’t change their chicken into a different animal.

  Sorry East but you are misinformed. The God of the muslims is Allah who Mohamed selected from a list of God’s in the arabs polytheistic faith. Allah was the Moon god and one of many. In reality Allah is ,more than likely, the Prince of Persia spoken of in the bible who is an Arch-demon. The Bible warns us of future doctrines of demons, including Islam and Mormonism, which are both created by demonic visitations. A president who turned his own country against itself as a campaign strategy was able to succeed by turning race against race and class against class with lies and deceit. Convincing enough ignorant people that the evils of killing new human life, and legalizing Sodom and Gomora as some kind of a right? This will be a night never to be forgotten where the fundamentals of which this great country were founded on were ignorantly ignored and swept under the rug so the cancerous habit of undeserved entitlements could spread until the trillions of dollars in debt becomes a deadly reality and not just a fantasy number. I’m in Maine. The Mass-holes & New Yorkers flooded here for decades making it a liberal’s dream State. My vote is cancelled out over 10 times here. I’m tired of voting for not. I’m officially out. No more getting up and checking Drudge or the Blaze before I shower..no more. I will figure out how the hell I’m going to afford the future. Very sad day indeed.

If only you gave them this one thing instead of forcing your religious beliefs down everyone’s throat, practically everyone in America would identify with conservatism… but no. You have to cram conservatism and Christianity together as one.

You’re creating your own enemies, and flushing your own country down the drain. Gay marriage is part of the future whether you like it or not. It harms nobody. This generation doesn’t care, and neither will the next. Yes, these generations are stupid, but they are right on this one. Opposing it is pointless.

Don’t believe in gay marriage? Here’s an idea: Don’t marry someone of the same sex.

Easy.

Or just don’t let go… be that dog with a bone, and hang on until they day you die. It won’t make a difference. The next generation of conservatives will clean up the mess you left behind, and build a free, prosperous America where *gasp* gay people can live how they want without oppression.

What gives us the right to redefine what God has defined. God told Jeremiah He knew him in the womb and yet we say it’s not a life just a tissue mass and abort it. God had sodomites in Israel stoned and yet even though the practice stopped God didn’t have a change of mind. Adulterers were also stoned, didn’t make that right either. Marriage and the home is a man and a woman raising children. Yet we have turned that all around. 40 percent of children aren’t born into a traditional home. Ephesians 5 tells us what the home should be. Paul wrote if a man doesn’t work he shouldn’t eat. We have rejected God’s word and get whatever comes are way.

  At the very least I look at the Bible as distilled social wisdom. Going to college I never ran across a gay man who wanted to have a family or get married. Some talked about doing a stint in the military to obtain life long health insurance (VA) not out of patriotism, but in case they ever got AIDS.
  
  I remember some lesbians talking about children & family, but not the gays.
  
  We’ll have this liberal/progressive social experiment. In the end it won’t work. A dose of reality will cause social structure to snap back like a steel spring. It will take 1 to 3 generations to become apparent, but marriage will ruin the gay lifestyle.

  I don;t know about any collapse. I do know that Obama is economically illiterate & proposes foolish policies that fly against common sense & the genetic programming of people. The most we can hope for is an Obama legislative defeat or barring that devolving into a semi benign oligarchy. All communist/socialist states do. China, Russia/USSR & North Korea all have. Well not so benign, but definitely oligarchies. North Korea is run by 100 families. It is an belligerent iron-fisted kleptocracy. Would anyone seriously emigrate or try to do business in Russia? It looked good in the 1990s, but now it would just be a way of throwing $ down a rat hole.

I am disppointed in my fellow Mainers for not adopting a unique marriage term for legalizing gay unions, so that both the traditional and the nontraditionals could find a place. I hope the state will get ready for the influx of gays suing for some reason about this right not being fullfilled by some establishment.

  I would not consider same-sex marriage to be an extension of freedom. It is not like same-sex marriage was illegal, it just was not endorsed and extended benefits by the state(s). The only excuse I can think of for any government to be involved in marriage would be to strengthen cohesion of biological parents to their children to avoid the social burden of broken families – but with no legal enforcement nor practical gains toward that goal in even traditional marriage I don’t think government should be involved at all. I was actually kinda miffed having to hire a state-licensed minister as well as file paperwork to get the state’s stamp of approval in order for my marriage to be legitimate. There is no practical standard for a bureaucracy to judge a marraige to be legitimate.
  
  As for marajuana – my biggest concern is how much freedom businesses will maintain while trying to maintain safe and productive workplaces. It is not an easy issue to deal with currently and I am not sure if government agencies and/or workers rights groups will side with businesses or workers when the inevitable happens and people start losing their jobs for coming in to work baked or still under lingering influence once marajuana is legalized.

  Bulls***, it is all about money and recruitment. Gays want to get government benefits, freebies, and gays want to be put into positions in government, military, schools, sports programs, boy scouts-it is coming, etc. to make it easier for them to recruit young and confused minds into the program. After all being gay is now another legitimate lifestyle to be offered to them.

  In the mid 1980s I read about the theory of people becoming gay because of confusion: The Confusion Theory. It was in the appendix of my social psychology book. What are the odds that this line on inquiry is dead due to politics & not science?
  
  The still have not found the gay gene. I think gayness is spread via meme & not gene.

  You are choosing to ignore reality. Science has found that the brain of a homosexual is different from the brain of a heterosexual. Yes people are in fact born gay. Just like some people are born with other abnormalities. Why can’t people simply accept this fact and move forward? Gays marrying other gays have zero impact on you or I. Hell, it has zero impact on our species. We are talking about people who will never reproduce because they are drawn to people of the same sex. The hate being shown on here in some of the comments isn’t very Christian at all. God gave us all free will and we are each judged on what we choose to do with that. Since free will is a divine gift and you are trying to interfere with that gift I would think that would be viewed as a sin. Same sex couples aren’t hurting anyone but possibly themselves in the eyes of God.

  Is the difference due to being born gay or did the difference come over time by acting gay?
