SAN FRANCISCO, CA – OCTOBER 16: U.S. Marines stand next to a television monitor that is displaying a photo of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Ambassador Christopher Stevens during a memorial service for Stevens at San Francisco City Hall on October 16, 2012 in San Francisco, California. Christopher Stevens served as the U.S. Ambassador to Libya from June 2012 to September 11, 2012 when he was killed in an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. (Credit: Getty Images)
The House Intelligence Committee is planning to hold a hearing on the deadly Benghazi terrorist attack next week where top Obama intelligence officials are expected to testify, Fox News reports. Republicans and millions of Americans are hoping to finally get some answers now that the President Barack Obama is no longer running for re-election.
U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, State Department employee Sean Smith and former Navy SEALs Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were killed in the coordinated attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi. Early intelligence reports were confirmed when it was discovered that a local radical Islamist group was behind the attack.
The Obama administration has been blasted for its inconsistent and evolving story regarding the attack. The White House initially blamed an anti-Muslim YouTube video and has since stonewalled congressional investigators pressing for more information. Lawmakers also want to know why repeated calls for increased security were ignored and why more wasn’t done to protect Americans in Libya after the attack began.
More from FoxNews.com:
The House Intelligence Committee will hold its hearing on the attack on Nov. 15, Fox News has learned. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, CIA Director David Petraeus and Matt Olsen, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, are expected to testify.
The Senate Intelligence Committee plans to meet the same day to discuss the Libya attack, but that hearing will be closed to the public.
[…]
Republicans, who control the House, have accused Obama officials of downplaying the attack’s terrorist nature to maintain an administration narrative that Al Qaeda is on the run. Officials initially suggested an anti-Islam video produced in the United States had motivated the attack, which U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice said five days later appeared to be “spontaneous” violence after a protest escalated.
But further investigation revealed no protest outside the consulate on the night of the attack, and the attackers are thought to be members of Ansar al-Sharia, a group that isn’t directly affiliated with Al Qaeda but sympathizes with its anti-Western goals. It remains unclear how long the attackers had been planning their strike and whether they were motivated by outrage over the video.
Questions still surround the Obama administration’s decision not to attempt to save the Americans trapped in Libya. In fact, the White House didn’t even dispatch a military team at all or convene a key counterterrorism task force.

A pair of boots lies on the ground at the US consulate compound in Benghazi on September 13, 2012, following an attack on the building late on September 11 in which the US ambassador to Libya and three other US nationals were killed. Libya said it has made arrests and opened a probe into the attack, amid speculation that Al-Qaeda rather than a frenzied mob was to blame. (Credit: AFP/Getty Images)
Since the attack occurred, leaked classified and unclassified cables have suggested that U.S. officials were aware in the days leading up to the Benghazi attack that Islamist extremists were a growing threat in the country and the consulate in Benghazi was particularly vulnerable to a coordinated attack.
Obama has promised the American people that the attackers will be brought to justice. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has taken “full responsibility” for the security failures in Libya.
So far, one of the suspected terrorists has been arrested and is being held in Tunisia. He was arrested at an airport in Turkey not long after the attack. The FBI was finally given access to the suspect last week.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 9:01amI heard a plausible theory about Benghazi. The Obama administration wanted Ambassador Chris Stevens kidnapped so Obama could negotiate a prisoner swap, probably the Blind Sheik. This would make him the ‘Great Savior’, and he would be able to release the Blind Sheik without a backlash from the American people. This is why our people were told to stand down three times. Since the SEALS disobeyed and went to help, the worst thing happened and they were killed. This is the only scenario that makes sense in my mind. This is a very sinister administration. Dark days are upon us all.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 9:32amNo Obama is a jerk off that ignored the truth even as he watched it live. He turned his back on our ambassador and Seals. How anyone could serve under him I don’t understand. How generals can spout the party line when their soldiers and our nation is endangered by this tyrannt I don’t understand. After 22 years in the military including Carter and Clinton which were really bad, we have a dictator that is allowing the slaughter of service members calling it work place violence, the murder of our ambassador and Seals, the murder of our border agents that were not nay preventable but we gave money and weapons to those who attacked us.
Soon we will all have to make a choice between freedom and tyranny.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 9:41amI disagree. Negotiating with terrorist hostage takers for such a swap could lead to outrage far beyond mere conservative or republican circles. If a planned operation could be shown, impeachment would be a real possibility. That’s a risk I doubt would be taken. I think the help was not sent out of fear of another disaster as occurred in Iran with Carter’s too late rescue attempt.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 7:26amActually Chet – “High crimes and misdemeanors” as a reason to impeach means pretty much what Congress wants it to mean. It’s latitude is wide to cover a range of reasons from outright treason to incompetence. But to your point, what is legal about allowing your ambassador to be killed after multiple calls for better security and then for assistance once attacked? Wouldn’t that at least be reckless endangerment?
This all should have been out before the election. Now I think we’ll see about as much truth as we did for Fast and Furious. Way to go MSM.

The Constitution is written in English, therefore, crimes and misdemeanors means violations of law. There is no law against mere incompetence. I assume that embassies and military installations all across the world routinely complain about perceived security inadequacies. There is no law against misassessing priorities. Diplomatic and military personnel accept that their job entails risk when they take it and that we may or may not be able to help them when they are in trouble. At a time when many of our embassies and consulates were under attack, in all cases but one by unruly mobs of civilians, failing to call for a counterattack against what at first appeared to be another mob of civilians because doing could make the situation worse for all of our other personnel everywhere is at worst an error of judgement. There is no law against making errors of judgement. Nobody is perfect, and anybody who is routinely forced to make critical decisions will be wrong once in a while.

When an embassy of ours is under attack, and the White house has real time information, pictures, video, 2 way communications — and they DON’T send in the cavalry, and when the cavalry wants to move in on their own because they hear about the threat first hand and are told to STAND DOWN. . . . . . . . .well that just isn’t what America is supposed to be. And that is about the highest crime I can think of.

Nov. 9, 2012 at 1:01amIt’s not a crime unless there’s a law against it, and there isn’t. I’m not saying the President made the right call. I don’t know if he did or not. But I do say that if he had ordered the troops to fire on the attackers, and the attacks on all our other embassies had intensified because the rest of the world could not know and would not believe that the people we killed were anything more than protesters, and we had ended up losing many more than four people or having to fire on large numbers of actual civilian protesters, then you and all of the rest of the people who are attacking him for the decision he made would be attacking him and calling for his ouster for that decision too. The only thing to be learned from this sad incident is that we should all be glad that we aren’t the President and don’t have to make the kind of choices that he faces.

Nov. 9, 2012 at 10:06amChet, Your hypothetical is spinning out of control. When you are the President you defend your people especially on American soil. What he did is reckless endangerment resulting in 3 deaths. That IS a crime. He had forewarning and did NOTHING. When it happened he did NOTHING. At this point his duty was clear – to protect American lives on American soil. When the armed forces wanted to respond he told them to do NOTHING. After the fact he tried to spin it off as a reaction to a video that he had no warning about – a clear falsehood – to cover his inaction.
I don’t feel bad for him as President having to make these kinds of decisions (which in this case should have been a no brainer) – that is the job – and he just plain did NOTHING and lied about all of it so he wouldn’t look bad.
You can hypothesize all you want about the what if’s, but that answers nothing in this case.

Nov. 9, 2012 at 3:54pmDoing nothing is not a crime. Reckless endangerment requires some positive action to prove. If the President or whoever has the authority to make the call has to choose between losing three guys and possibly losing more than three guys, it may be time to say goodbye to your two buddies. Lying to the American people so you won’t look bad isn’t a crime. Lying is free speech. You can lie to anybody about anything as long as you’re not trying to defraud them of money. Mock my hypothetical scenarios all you want. They are plausible enough to make this a judgment call to which no criminal liability can attach.
