Man Who Tried to Edit Global Warming Info From Sandy’s Wikipedia Page Temporarily Banned

Ken Mampel for several days was one of the most active Wikipedia editors on Hurricane Sandy’s page. He was soon called out for taking down mentions of global warming and climate change as it pertained to the storm. Now, reports are that Mampel was temporarily banned from editing on the site due to “edit warring.”

TheBlaze reported that Mampel believed global warming didn’t have a place on Hurricane Sandy’s page as scientists couldn’t prove that climate change would cause such an event, even though many at the time were discussing a connection. Even Wikipedia Foundation’s Head of Communications Jay Walsh was reported as saying Mampel’s edits were in “good faith.” Eventually, global warming and its potential connection to fueling storms like Sandy was included on Wikipedia.

Popular Science reported Tuesday that Mampel was banned from editing for 24 hours due to the editing war that ensued on the hurricane’s collaborative online encyclopedia page. Popular Science pointed to a discussion board Mampel had regarding the ban under his Kennvido account.

Here’s a notice of his block and appeal, which was denied:

Ken Mampel Blocked From Wikipedia For Edit Warring After Keeping Global Warming From Hurricane Sandys Page

(Image: Wikipedia)

The block was instituted because Mampel was pushing his point of view “which is apparent in the continuous reversions and the edit summaries.” The user Bbb23 wrote that it “tried to advise Ken in this discussion about the policy issues involved in edit-warring, but he simply refused to grasp (or was unable to) the principles involved in collaborative editing. The editing on the article is difficult enough without this kind of disruption.”

Al Gore and his buddies have become Billionaires touting , climate change/global warming make believe science. Gore has used his name and buddies to invest in “green companies” after the outfit goes public, and touting the greenish nature, he sells his stock and does it again. Great business model, way I could have thought of that. Our government thru the Department of Energy has funded 40 or more companies, of which 30 or more are bankrupt or in bankruptcies, or filing for bankruptcy. How many Trillions are needed from taxpayer cash before we are worse off than Greece. A great scam, with the taxpayers footing his cash.

Al Gore conversation – “Wow a hurricane hit during hurricane season – OMG must be global warming. What the planet is actually cooling the last 16 years? Must be climate change then. What climate change happens in natural cycles throughout history? Prove it! What you have proof? I don’t care I can convince a bunch of morons that you are lying and line my pockets in the process”.

Wikipedia is supposed to be an online encyclopedia that can be edited by virtually anyone. So basically it’s a blog that anybody can contribute to. Anybody who goes to we keep media for real, honest information needs to go have their head examined.

Wikipedia’s been completely taken over by these propagandists. If you fail to either toe the line or leave a piece of propaganda alone, you’ll get banned. That said, Wikipedia is only good for apolitical subjects. Not entertainment, as actors who have nasty things to say about politicians will be quoted. How Jim Cornette’s opinion that Sarah Palin is a “useless tw*t” is relevant to his page is beyond me.

The biggest problem is that “facts by popular vote” is leaving our young people very confused about what is truly a fact and what is a “consensus” fact. My sons graduated from HS in the last 2 years. In HS they were *not* taught how to use their reasonably well-stocked library. Instead, their efforts to make “technology” part of their curriculum included using Google for research papers, Wikipedia instead of a real encyclopedia and the like. “Technology” doesn’t mean how to use Google, it means how to use real tools or even how does the computer work. Instead, they get the mistaken idea they get good info from garbage sites like Wikipedia. Next generation is going to use Twitter for their research, I guess. Sheesh!

Yes, I was banned and got a good rest. This is what it was told on my talk page WHY I was banned: “the sanctions process is by definition not intended as punishment. It is intended as constructive criticism to reform bad behaviors and produce better editors. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 17:06, 5 November 2012 (UTC)…yeah, right. You want to see the bias on Wikipedia? Go in and read the waring that went on when people ‘dared’ to mention the new Obama motto Forward, comparing him to the many socialists who used the same word in their endeavors. Don’t believe me? Go to: http://www.theblaze.com/stories/wikipedia-entry-on-obamabiden-forward-slogan-scrubbed-of-references-to-leftwing-newspapers-publications/ or Obama ‘Forward’ campaign slogan inspires Wikipedia editing war http://dailycaller.com/2012/05/03/obama-forward-campaign-slogan-inspires-wikipedia-editing-war/ It THAT doesn’t show you the left tilt, there is no hope for you. Again, I did what I did ‘in good faith’.

I must admit, there have been times I asked for help and received it. There are people on Wiki that are good and have no agenda or support the agenda. But, I think many of editors meet in a dark room with candles lit and shadows lurking discussing the next plan of the left. And boy…. are some ticked that this got out. I hope you read the Obama Forward wars that I referred to earlier. It’s a fun read… bring popcorn.

I have watched much of the video coverage of “Sandy”, and the relief work, and relief workers! Where is the Salvation Army and their relief Trucks and volunteers? Is there a news black out of the aid given by the Salvation Army? Under FEMA each volunteer agency is asked to help, and each volunteer agency does on a equal effort, and that includes Mercury One!

Wonder if Obama and Chris Christie will walk down the beach hand-in-hand in the aftermath of this new storm that’s going to hit. Obama’s already won re-election so he probably won’t give a fig and Christie will probably just cozy up to the nearest Red Cross tent for the free cookies and coffee. I feel sorry for those citizens who are and will continue to suffer the effects of these storms. But, they’ve made their choices and now must face the consequences. May God help them.

The policy of banning people from editing Wikipedia is consistently applied in terms of both substance and individual. Given that many scientists are considering global warming as contributing to the frequency and severity of storms such as Sandy is worthy of being mentioned. The fact that this individual doesn’t accept the science and believes otherwise is not noteworthy. This is a simple one people.

      @JROOK

Except that the edit war only started because they refused to include statements from other reputable sources countering those claims.

Wikipedia does NOT enforce their policies consistently. They routinely censor/delete any information that doesn’t conform to a certain perspective no matter how many reputable sources you cite to support it. And they routinely allow or revert edits made to information that is completely nonsensical and wholly unsupported.

I experinced it quite a few times when the site was relatively new and I hadn’t yet realized they only wanted information that supported their narrow biased perversions of each topic. For example I once tried to correct the page on chewing tobacco by removing the statement that it’s known to cause cancer, and I provided an explanation for doing it. The change was promptly reverted and I was warned not to make “vandalism edits”. At that point I decided I would just add information that counters it since they insisted on keeping it in the article. I provided numerous quotes from a number of scientists and doctors with relevant citations stating that there is absolutely no scientific evidence to suggest that smokeless tobacco causes cancer. That edit was also promptly reverted, and I was banned for a month again for making “vandalism edits”. And that’s on a fact that is not even debatable that I was clearly providing the correct information and the site clearly had the wrong information.

Of course, we can’t have facts installed…
can’t have even a balanced discussion of things like ’100 year storms.’

Have to toe the line with whatever the Left ‘scientists’ say is fact.

They even refused the compromise he first proposed which was simply to include some statements from some actual reputable sources (as opposed to the media quotes they’re using to support it) that disagree.

Here’s one of the best episodes on the subject of “Global Warming.” I’m not always on board with everything Ventura does but this investigation was very informative. I already knew a great deal of what is mentioned but if you know anyone who still believes in manmade “Global Warming” aka then “Climate Change” aka now “Sustainability” just forward this video to them. As I always say, FOLLOW THE MONEY. It’s all about riches and power. Look up details on dirt bag Maurice Strong and Agenda 21. Global Wealth redistribution.

this is what happens to ALL collectivist movements eventually……force and compulsion are brought to bear, “for the good of the collective”.

Socialism is defined as force used to control societal change. The group think outweighs the individual. same old story.

There was a storm just like this in 1831… so how does Al Gore and the Global Warmed-over crowd explain that… oh thats right, weather history only goes back 28 years of satellite imagery according to them, weather from the 8th-12th century being warmer than today, the 1920′s being warmer, the same cooled/warmed Atlantic/Pacific conditions of the 1950′s that created many of the same types of weather patterns, the cooling in the 1960′s… none of that matters, all that matters- Coal is bad, the planet is melting and we must all have solar and chevy volts…

Can’t wait to pay $6-$10 per gallon for gas next year, my electric bill to double from whats its already up 25% and for food to cost 25-50% more… 4 More years!!! Yippie!

Just the other day I caught one of my sons on-line teachers trying to convince him that man-made global warming was proven science. I was proud of my son, he stood his ground and for every “fact” she gave to prove her point he was able to counter with proven scientific facts of his own.

That is how wikipedia operates, and it’s why anybody that references wikipedia as a source is a complete and utter moron.

Wikipedia is not factually based it’s agenda driven. People can post blatantly false or unsupportable information all they want as long as it fits their agenda. But the second anyone tries to include any information that doesn’t fit their ideology or edit clearly false or unsupported information out of a page, they are banned.

He made a proper edit and a gave a sound logical reason for it. It was the idiot that put the global warming BS there that was “edit warring”. He’s the one that added the information back in repeatedly without offering any support for why it warranted inclusion.

Wikipedia is a freakin joke and so is anyone that tries to use it as a source of information in a discussion.
