What Was the Giant Pulsating Orange Disc Over the River Thames Monday Night?

A disc-shaped orb was seen floating over the River Thames near London Monday night, confusing some onlookers. But if they looked closer they would see it wasn’t a UFO but a promotional stunt for the next edition of the popular video game Halo.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 celebrated the release of Halo 4 with this “Halo 4 Glyph,” which it states in its announcement was one of the “largest and brightest man-made structures to ever fly over a capital city.”

Take a look at the official trailer of the glyph’s flight:

The glyph measured 50 feet in diameter and weighed more than three tons. It was flow by a helicopter.

“’Halo’ launches are renowned for being entertainment game-changers and we are back with our most ambitious projects to date,” Chris Lewis, Vice President, Interactive Entertainment Business, Microsoft EMEA, said in a statement. “Last week we created a replica of the “Halo” universe within the heart of Europe. This week we have one of the worlds’ largest and brightest performance art objects being flown over London.

“The Glyph flyover makes the seemingly impossible world of science fiction a reality, a 50 foot symbol of the Didact hovering in the skies of a major capital city, seems a fitting way to herald the next chapter of this phenomenal blockbuster franchise.”

The glyph was made by a team of more than 50 people over the span of eight weeks. It included 455 LED light strips on 37 panels, which totaled more than 113,000 lights using 20 kilowatts of power. Although the glyph was flown, the lights were remote controlled by a boat following it in the river.

Check out this footage of the glyph taken from a further distance away:

As a staunch Conservative, and Constitutionalist I have to say, I love it. I am 34 tomorrow and I have been playing video games since I was a child, and it’s a medium of entertainment that is here for good, and Halo is one of the better games in the industry.

If we are smart we would start getting our conservative messages out into games and popular media, because as long as we let popular media (movies, music and games)be directed and dominated by the liberal socialist in this country, Obama will only be the start of the complete transformation of this country. Our message is not accessible to people who have been trained to keep a close mind to what the philosophy of our political beliefs are, thus they will never hear it properly. Until we start changing the minds of those in the inner city, we will continue to get out voted and brushed to the side. We must change!! Not in our beliefs but in how we spread our message. If we are correct (which we are) why is our message falling on deaf ears? Maybe it’s because we have given away the schools to liberal agendas and teachers, we have given away the film industry to be a mouth piece of the anti-capitalist fever that is killing this nation. Popular music glorifies the takers and looters and this has got to change. Our message is universally appealing when it’s properly displayed, and the left will never tell their sheep the truth about conservatism, but only what they view conservatism as. We will lose if this continu

Right…. The libs are ahead of the game (no pun intended) with video games, as well. Turn an xbox 360 on and one of the first things you see is an msnbc link.

brilliant.. for a publicity stunt.. hauling a 3 ton monstrocity in the dark over a city using helicopters.

What if the line broke or the helicopter had a problem. Most lifting using helicopters are carefully controlled events that are done only in daylight.

These folks who planned this are a bunch of idiots

Sorry folks, after the election results I had to turn into something. I prayed for vengeful bolts of lightning over DC. Imagine my disappointment when I turned up as a “pulsating disk of orange light” in England, of all places! DANG!

@ dan-o, that is a good observation but then who knows is space really empty? Maybe there is a helicopter type craft that can use Boson Higgs particles to propel it through worm holes using the gravitational fields of twin collapsing suns , just proof to me it ain’t so!

NO thanks already have a MAC gaming machine, its called a Mini. 8gb ram 500gb HDD intel core i5 not a 1998 PPC G-5 designed by Apple/IBM/Toshiba and sold by Apple to the Hollywood and Grahphics industry as the G5 Quad-core Tower.

Read the chip specs on the X-box 360 you will see the PPC-G5 spec with added Xenon code for backwards compatibility which they recently stopped.

If you have to do that to promote your product then it’s probably not worth buying. Good products sell themselves.

You must not have ever been introduced to Halo. The buzz around this game started before many people even knew which studio would produce the 4th installment. This isn’t marketing – this is grandstanding a cultural icon.

I hate to tell you this, but you really don’t know what you are talking about. This game will bring in Billions of dollars with a B, Billions. Don’t mock this, as the video game industry is where the next evolution of entertainment has taken society, and if conservatives give up this medium to liberals they way we have the movie industry, music, and television, then it’s going to be increasingly harder for our message to permeate with the next generation of Americans and people in general.

Thank you kind sir, I happen to be one of those gamers you automatically assume voted for Obama and you have to work for.

Wait….wait a second here, no I’m not. I happen to be a gamer and conservative, I just prefer my entertainment to be video games, is that a problem?

You guys make me laugh. A comment on a video game gets you all worked up? You caught me, I’m an old, angry video game bigot. I will seek counseling – thank you for showing me the light.

Actually, I congratulate you on your conservative views. There are far too few “youngsters” who understand or even care about the direction of the country. Be strong.

BTW: There’s a whole wide world out there, turn off the XBOX and go outside and find it. You’ll be glad you did.
