Following Tuesday’s Election, Former Reagan Econ. Advisor Says he Couldn’t be More ‘Optimistic’: Here’s Why
Former economic advisor to Ronald Reagan Art Laffer during an interview on Fox Business on Thursday said that he couldn’t be “more happy” with the outcome of the presidential election.
Why?
Because he believes that by the end of President Obama’s second term, the GOP’s “odds-on favorite” for 2016, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.), will be able to campaign on (and implement) pro-growth, free market policies.
“I’m very, very hopeful about what’s going to happen,” he said to Fox’s Martha McCallum, “I think this was the election not to win.”
He explains:
We have the 2013 “taxmageddon” [i.e. the so-called “fiscal cliff”] that I think is going to lead to a very sharp drop in economic activity. And looking at 2014, I’m very excited about how the elections will turn out there. And 2016, I think, will be the equivalent of 1980, and we’re going to have enormous prosperity in America.
I couldn’t be more happy and more optimistic than I am. This is Obama’s day. He won and the Democrats did pretty well and, frankly, it’s their game. It’s their game and it’s the only game in town. But I hope they go the Simpson-Bowlles — flat-tax and spending restraint.
McCallum jumped in for a moment to clarify Laffer’s statement.
“You really think the president will go for real tax reform?” she asked.
“No, I don’t.”
“Or a sort of flat-tax provision?”
“No.”
“Or that he will allow anything to pass that doesn’t include an increase in taxes for the wealthy?”
“I think he’s going to require increase in tax rates on the wealthy and that’s his downfall,” Laffer said, “and that just makes no sense whatsoever. The wealthy are the people who hire everyone else!”
“You can’t love jobs and hate job creators,” he added, “and [President Obama] hates jobs creators.”

America is going to hit bottom at the rate we’re going; it’s either now or later. Let’s get it over with and then take off again, leaving so-called Progressivism in the dungheap of failed leftist ideologies, i. e. Communism, Nazism, Fascism, etc.

In 1984, when Reagan won a 49 state landslide he got 64 percent of the white vote. In 2012 Romney got about 60 percent of the white vote and lost the election. No, there will never be another Reagan, nor another Republican president, in fact, there may never be another white male president unless he is a far left Democrat, and maybe even gay.

Posted on November 9, 2012 at 8:31amArt doesn’t get it. To all of the posters who think once the hard times hit the obama voters will feel the pain and realize their mistake: That hope is folly. These idiot voters don’t vote based on the economy or unemployment or the price of gas. It doesn’t matter how much pain they feel in their own lives due to obama’s policies….it doesn’t compute to them. They vote for the guy who promises to have the government provide more things in their own life. It doesn’t matter if he even provides them or not. As long as he claims he’s gonna soak the rich for their benefit and they’ll never have to pay for “xyz” again. These people WANT to be dependent. When the hard times hit these people will blame the rich and seek to increase government power in an effort to squeeze “the rich” for more. As life becomes hard for them they will seek MORE government assistance….they will seek MORE DEPENDENCE. This country will never be free again…accept it. This is the predictable arc of nations. Europe is imploding from socialism and who did france elect in response: a socialist….greece elected nazi’s to its parliament in response to their economic collapse. It is folly if you think we will be going anywhere but farther down the rabbit hole to socialism. Be prepared…in this cycle we all know what happens before the rebirth of freedom.

Posted on November 9, 2012 at 8:51amThese voters believe that the role of government is to help people. So the worse our situation becomes the more inclined they will be to vote for a dictator. They will not vote for the guy who tells them that the best way to get cheap and abundant food is for the government to NOT provide it and let the free market provide it. To them, the best way to get food is to get food stamps. And to the “benevolent” voter, the best way to get food to the poor is not through more capitalism, but again, more food-stamps…he wants to use government to help the poor. To the “benevolent” voter, the act of voting IS his charitable giving….he is good in his own mind because of how he votes. Actually giving his money directly to charity is unnecessary, after all he voted for charity.

Posted on November 9, 2012 at 2:01pmI agree, Pappy. The libs in this country think we’re just obstructing Obama because we want him to fail. We’re obstructing him because we want America to survive. In order to do that I think we need to do an “I told you so.” Just pencil-whip every bit of economic legislation they send through. Let it crash, let it burn. When it all comes crumbling down we can turn and say “Now, do you see why?” and we’ll sweep up and fix it, and no Democrat will ever be elected again.

Posted on November 9, 2012 at 9:33pmI am of the same opinion, congress should offer their plan up to the democrats, but when not used they should not block any tax increases that the progressives believe will fix the problems. After 4 years of taxing the job creators who will shrink their businesses in order to make their money, there will be fewer and fewer employment opportunities, thus shrinking the tax base even more.
The only way to prove a point sometimes is with tough love. Give them what they want, when it fails you have allowed the next generation to learn an important lesson, socialism doesn’t work.
Throw in a non combatant social agenda where conservatives opt for allowing states to decide on social agendas as opposed to conservatives being beat up about their personal beliefs being played as phobias.
It will be less difficult to campaign against the progressive’s who will always play the race card, the abortion card, the immigration card and the new favorite the religious extemist card.
After four more years of a shrinking job market, I believe those who have had enough will be more willing to turn to a new economic policy that believes in state’s right to determine social issues and comes across as less judgemental about the social sins of individuals.

Posted on November 9, 2012 at 9:46pmFor those who are worried about the 20 million or so new Americans. Those 20 million will be looking for jobs and when there aren’t jobs they will either vote for job creators or return from whence they came.
I lived and worked in Texas in 2008-2009, don’t get worried when immigrants are coming to America, get worried when they are leaving. Of course on our side, it can be positive when they are leaving as it will show others that taxing job creators only hurts those who won’t be employed. When fuel prices rise business growth shrinks, in order to maximize profits. This is why the economy is stagnant, now.
Now what could happen is the progressives tax the job creators and allow for more drilling in the US which would offset the higher taxes and could promote some growth in the economy, but King Hussein is not going to allow for his green energy policies to fail. He will bankrupt the country and choke any possibility of economic growth to push the green energy agenda, eventhough most have already bankrupted and gone out of business.

The second time, the only substance was that he was a bad president the first term, yet he was re-elected. I fear the only message that will ever get through to those who voted for Mr. Obama is when their check doesn’t show up because the government can’t pay it. Even then, they are so well conditioned they will believe it is because the great evil industrial complex is conspiring to make the government look bad. I fear we are well and truly screwed. Posted on November 9, 2012 at 9:53pmHere is a different view as a Christian. As Christians we should not place our trust in our government. If we are truly believers that we will be protected from the dangers of the world by our creator, we shouldn’t depend on who’s running the government to determine our safety.
We need to free ourselves from placing our faith in government and place our faith in God. If our faith is with the Creator then we have nothing to fear. He will do for us what we couldn’t do at the polls.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 9:16pmYou’re right JustAngry, these neocon statists just don’t get it. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
I wanted Obama out of office as much as anyone but I knew as soon as Romney was nominated, he had no more chance of winning than McCain did.
The only Republican candidate who could have taken the youth vote from Obama was Ron Paul. Paul would also have taken the anti-war voters from Obama because he doesn’t just say it, he means it. I honestly believe that Paul would have won this election if the neocons hadn’t worked so hard to make sure he couldn’t get the nomination.
It just amazes me that just hours after the travesty of this election, they’re already making plans to lose the next one.

This is when we see if the Military will follow his illegal orders, follow the so called man or the constitution. He’s also working on abolishing the first amendment and since he has designs for those two why not the twenty second amendment?
What’s to stop the megalomaniac from doing that? Since he believes himself to be a god who will stop him? congress LMAO that’s filled with candyass traitors afraid of their own shadow.

Optimism is a characteristic of patriotism (@Doomsdayprophet)
The silver lining is that 20 years of absent socialism beats 4 or 8 years.
That is what Obama’s sure failure will produce.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 6:49pmOur biggest problem is that minorities dont vote based on freedom they vote based on what the govt gives them or will do to help them as a minority group. Socialism gives them that Capitalism and the Constitution cant. How do we get it through that the path they have been on is not one that is in their interest but the interest of the democratic party. Dems are perfectly happy if they stay poor and vote D. How do they not see this?

Yes, but socialism always runs out of other people’s money. Just because its new to America doesn’t mean the ideology failure has changed. It is guaranteed to fail. The burden of (minority, as you say) entitlements only expedites the collapse.

They wouldn’t be voting against your perceived biased or stereotyping would they?!
Your failure to understand their point of view may be the larger shortcoming of the your outlook or the R’s party… I think that many minorities would gladly vote for fiscal conservatism and “personal responsibility”. But overall there is a perception that conservatives aren’t as open to newer or more diverse groups. And this perception isn’t due to media bias…

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 6:49pmBARBER2, I caught the interview earlier and it took it a few minutes later to sink in with me. We are already dealt the hand we have. No matter how much wishing we do will accomplish anything. We are stuck looking to the future once again. Much like it was said about Reagan when he ran for the candidacy against Ford for president during the ’76 primary. Reportedly, Reagan would not have been the conservative that we saw when he actually won in 1980. Yeah, we had to suffer through Carter’s bumbling around, but it brought us 12 years of Republican presidency.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 6:33pmI love Art Laffer and have a great deal of respect for him. But if republicans couldn’t beat this guy with this economy and his nasty campaign, they aren’t going to beat anybody. Republicans have this idea that if things just get bad enough, people will turn away from gov’t. Can anyone show me one single example of that in all of human history?
Look at Greece, France (2012 or 1787), California, New York – look anywhere. Once they go down the road to statism, they NEVER TURN BACK. And Tuesday was the tipping point election. We won’t be going back for generations to come. The Takers out number the Makers, and the mob has ruled.

Posted on November 9, 2012 at 1:03amLook at the big picture. We have a larger debt load than Greece. They can’t keep the farce up, much longer. Now that the taxpayers see they’re screwed, they will cut back severely on all economic activity. We are in the end stage of Terminal Cancerous Government, just like USSR in 1990. A debt crisis looms.

Posted on November 9, 2012 at 11:23amWe’re not finished. We will have a president in 2016. It will not be Obama. I know he would love to be the next Caesar but I don’t buy the theory that he is installed as permanent dictator. This election was divided. There was no mandate. As recent as 2010 conservatives swept the mid-term elections. In the last several months Scott Walker beat back a liberal effort to recall him. We are not yet Russia in 1917. But we need to refocus our message. Not compromise our principles. We need to start doing what the left is doing as far as their ground game is concerned. Gotta admit, they got the ground game perfected. When it came to wooing the latino vote, the GOP punted, remained aloof. Consequently we gave up a very large voting bloc — who surprisingly, are much like us in philosophy and belief (strong family values, pro-life, church-going, hard-working). If we spend the next four years indoctrinating, not alienating these people, and succeed in even winning half the Latino population over, the liberals will never win another election. I say beat them at their own game. And we have the perfect standard bearer in Marco Rubio. We start now. Not next month. We have four years to get this right.

Posted on November 9, 2012 at 2:26pmAmerica is finished. America is gone. It pains me to say it, but America is gone. The “new majority” has spoken. They unequivocally want free stuff more than they want sound fiscal policy. They don’t want to work, they want free stuff from the govt, and they want us to pay for it. They don’t care that it isn’t sustainable. They don’t care about $1T deficits. They don’t care the debt is $16T and will be $22T by 2016. They only care about free stuff. There have always been takers in this country, now they’re the majority. We don’t turn back from this. The America we grew up with is gone, and will never be the same. It’s about to get a whole lot worse.

Here he is begging congress to pass TARP. Such demagoguery makes me sick. Similar to him telling endless stories about his grandma to convince conservatives that Medicare is the best thing since sliced bread (or since Social Security maybe).
