Jared Loughner Sentenced to 7 Life Terms Plus 140 Years in Prison for Deadly Tucson Rampage

AP
Jared Loughner was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for the deadly 2011 Tucson, Ariz. shooting rampage that killed six people and injured 13, including then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, whom he shot in the head.
U.S. District Judge Larry sentenced Loughner to seven life terms — one for each victim killed, plus an additional sentence for Giffords’ attempted assassination — plus another 140 years without the possibility of parole.
The Arizona Republic reported both Giffords and husband Mark Kelly were in the courtroom for the sentencing. Standing beside Giffords, Kelly addressed Loughner, as did other victims of the massacre.
“You may have put a bullet in her head but you haven’t put a dent in her spirit,” Kelly said, according to KVOA-TV. He added that Loughner has “decades upon decades” to contemplate what he did, but “after today, Gabby and I are done thinking of you.”
Loughner, now 24, declined to speak at the hearing. He pleaded guilty in August to 19 federal charges under an agreement that he would spend the rest of his life in prison without parole.
Loughner was diagnosed with schizophrenia after the shooting and underwent forcible psychotropic drug treatment.
Dr. Christina Pietz, Loughner’s psychologist, testified Thursday that he was competent and able to understand the proceeding.
Burns said before announcing the sentence that Loughner had no reasonable insanity defense for what he did.
“The facts show he traveled there with the purpose of shooting Ms. Giffords,” Burns said.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 8:01pmThe lack of compassion and understanding of mental illness on this issue is shocking to me. I am as conservative as any of you but I’m not going to say we should have executed a mentally ill man who was off his medication, or tht it’s because his parents were democrats. These comments are infantile and ignorant.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 8:13pmGOVERNMENT DOES NOT WANT A TRIAL
The truth would come out and we would find out about about the governments involvement. You should realize that that is not the real picture of the killer. Just as the news media altered photos of Tryvon Martin, this killer’s appearance was also altered. The assassin was really out to get Congresswomen Bachmann or the Federal Judge. We never were told anything about that GOP Federal Judge who was killed. Maybe the Judge was on President Obama’s Kill List.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 8:38pmHow much in tax payer monies did Arizona’s district attorney spend to come to this conclusion? And how much more will be spent to imprison him for the rest or his life, 1 to 2 Million? (who wants to be a millionaire) This is one of the many reasons why we are broke as a nation.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 7:51pmThis won’t be popular, but I have a serious problem with this sentence. He pleaded guilty, saving all the victims and the taxpayers the horror, expense, and inconvenience of a trial. He was sentenced to SEVEN life terms PLUS 140 years. Normally, when someone pleads guilty the sentence is lessened. Loughner has been diagnosed as schizophrenic. He had to be forcibly medicated in order to be fit to stand trial. The court-appointed psychologist who treated Loughner, warned that although Loughner was competent to plead guilty, he remained severely mentally ill. He could end up in a prison such as the federal lockup in Florence, Colo., that houses some of the country’s most notorious criminals. This man has a serious mental illness. He was not medicated at the time of the attack. This sentence treats him like any average thug. He is a sick boy. I have friends and family members who are schizophrenic or bipolar. One of my friends once tried to cast the devil out of me when he was off his meds. I got a call in the middle of the night once saying my family member was out in the parking lot of the apt complex screaming for everyone to get out, that there was a gas leak – again a med problem, not a gas leak. Of course, I am in no way minimizing, justifying, or excusing what he did. All I’m saying is that he was sick. He will be sick for the rest of his life. But with medication, he might lead a more normal, non-violent life. It wasn’t his fault he was sick. His actions were the resu

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 7:09pmThe article forgot to mention that both of Loughner’s parents are registered Democrats, and his mom is a duly elected democrat commissioner, and a democrat sheriff was constantly arresting Jared Loughner and letting him go. This was the same Sheriff that got up before MSM cameras and swore up and down the shooting was Sarah Palin’s fault for using targeting imagery on that state, the same imagery Democrats have used for decades, but no one in the MSM seemed to notice that. In fact, Loughner made threats against Giffords before Palin ran for office. So I wonder who’s fault that was? McCain’s? An awful lot of pertinent data was left out of this article. I mention it because the MSM never brought up the details of this guy’s family, or that blabbering (lying) Democrat Sheriff falsely accusing Sarah Palin, much as the MSM and Democrats accused her.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 5:03pmThat doesn’t make any sense: “diagnosed with schizophrenia…no reasonable insanity defense for what he did.” If ever there was an insanity case, this guy is it. That said, he is dangerous, and needs to be locked up.
I applaud Giffords and Kelly for their strength through all of this. It must be very difficult to avoid wringing that guy’s neck, regardless of his mental state.

Code of Hammurabi seems more appropriate here,m and putting the money toward national debt instead of spending it on this monster’s upkeep for the next 60 or more years.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 3:19pmJust think if Jared Loughner was Black or had killed a Republican he would have gotten a sentence of fifteen (15) years to be served concurrently, he’d be released on parole after serving just five (5) years behind bars and that’s IF he was convicted.

The sentence is an insult to the families of the people murdered. You take a life with premeditation and it’s not war you die that simple. It’s called justice!

Oh, and did ya get a load of those sentences? Can they be any more ridiculous? Hey, I have an idea. Let’s sentence him to 500 life terms plus 757, 385 years. That will prevent anybody else from even thinking about it (sarc) Pfft………………

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 3:45pmI’ve always wondered: An insane man lacks moral agency when committing crimes yet is a mortal danger to us all if he can’t be cured, ergo death penalty, however, if he’s made sane he wouldn’t be able to live with the effects of his crimes, as what sane man would not commit suicide if he realized he murdered a lot of people?
The insanity defense for murder just doesn’t seem to hold water. What are we to believe, that we can cure a sane man just so he can kill himself? Or that we are to keep an incurable psychopath alive who is a danger to all men at large?

We’ve always been okay with the death penalty because it has always been in the hands of THE PEOPLE…not the gov. Although I fear with an unbridled 2nd term, that could change. I bet you voted for someone else to *elected* to a life term, didn’t you? Hey, good job of brainwashing half of the American People into being terrified of freedom, though…good job.
I will continue to reject your paradigm. I WILL NOT COMPLY.
