Meet America’s First-Ever Buddhist Senator & Hindu Representative
With all the angst and chaos surrounding the 2012 presidential campaign, some likely failed to realize the historical leaps and bounds made by two, newly-elected officials. Mazie Hirono is the Senate’s first Japanese-born Asian-American; she’s also the first Buddhist to hold a Senatorial position.
Then, there’s Tulsi Gabbard, a newly-elected House member who is the first Hindu to serve in the House of Representatives. Both candidates, making historical markings, are Democrats who hail from the state of Hawaii.

Clearly, both women’s electoral victories are noteworthy. Considering that America is a majority-Christian nation, people of minority faiths securing congressional seats is certainly important to note. After all, as a nation founded on the premise of religious liberty, the rise of different faith traditions in government roles is intriguing.
Hirono’s story is a particularly fascinating one. The Star-Advertiser has more about her life and her rise to political power:
Hirono is the first Asian-American woman, and only the second woman of color — after former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, D-Ill. — elected to the Senate.
The overwhelming victory is validation for Hirono, 65, who had lost the governor’s race to Lingle in 2002, and who has had to contend with doubts about her political strength throughout her career as a state lawmaker, lieutenant governor and congresswoman.
“I’m grateful that so many people put their faith and trust in me and our congressional delegation to do what’s right for Hawaii and to work closely with our keiki o ka aina Barack Obama,” Hirono said at the Democrats’ celebration at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii.
As The Wall Street Journel notes, the 65-year-old congresswoman was born in Fukushima, Japan. She moved with her mother to the U.S. when she was just eight-years-old, later becoming a citizen in 1959. That same year, Hawaii, the locality she will represent in the Senate, officially became a U.S. state.

In a profile last week, Religion News Service (RNS) introduced Gabbard to its readers. The nation’s first Hindu House member, Gabbard will represent Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district. RNS has more about the politician’s background and her faith tradition:
Gabbard, 31, was born in American Samoa to a Catholic father and a Hindu mother, and moved to Hawaii when she was 2. In 2002, at age 21, she was elected to the Hawaii state legislature.
The next year, she joined the Hawaii National Guard, and in 2004 was deployed to Baghdad as a medical operations specialist. After completing officers’ training she deployed to Kuwait in 2008 to train the country’s counter-terrorism units. [...]
Gabbard, whose first name refers to a tree sacred to Hindus, fully embraced Hinduism as a teenager, and follows the Vaishnava branch that believes in the Supreme Lord Vishnu, and his 10 primary incarnations. Her primary scripture is the centuries-old Bhagavad Gita, whose themes include selfless action, spirituality, war, and serving God and humanity.
Hirono and Gabbard showcase the diverse nature of some of the new individuals who were elected to Congress. Depending on political persuasion, one might disagree with their policy views, but comprehending how their faith perspectives color their actions in office will be a fascinating feat.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 8:21pmJust to show what the Democrats have accomplished here:
My last month’s household expenses: (Family of 4)
Electricity: (No AC or heating) $458.70
Gas (water heater and stove): $83.20
Water (2 months): $214.73
Other Expenses:
Car registration fees for 2012 (2 cars): $800+
Gasoline: $4.65 per gal. (Over $5.20 on neighbor islands)
Milk: (no longer produced here) $4-$5 per HALF gallon
Property taxes calculated on “assessed value” of home. (per $1000 value just raised…again)
– My home purchased in 1988 for $114,000 (cheapest State-built “affordable” home)
– 2012 “assessed value” $996,000.00! NO WAY! State AFFORDABLE HOUSING area?
Many are losing their homes for inability to pay their land tax on homes that are already paid off.
Rental units: (2 doors from my house. 1100 square foot house, 3 bdrms, 1 1/2 baths, 2 parking) $3500.00 per month with NO utilities included.
The City and State now want to increase taxes and fees in all areas to pay for projects and entitlements there is no money for. Sound familiar? Now we have 2 more corrupt puppets in Congress that have sworn to rubber stamp Obama policies. We have a transvestite elected to our Education Board and a flaming homosexual activist as the Governors chief of staff. Our ex-US Senator Governor is pro drugs, pot smoker, anti Constitutionalist, communist/progressive, vile mouthed liberal. Sorry USA, I tried and did my part to prevent this with my vote. Worse than California in many ways, if

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 6:25pmI’m a Hawaiian born during our territorial years. My Grandparents lived here during the waning years of The Kingdom of Hawaii and my Grandfather worked in the royal palace as a furniture craftsman. Please read the “Apology Bill of 1993″, Public Law 103-150 to get a concise idea of what happened historically that effected the illegal overthrow and subsequent unlawful annexation and eventual de-facto “Statehood” of these islands. In that Public Law, Congress issued an apology, signed by President Clinton, on behalf of the U.S. for their part in the overthrow here in 1893, illegal annexation in 1900, and unauthorized “statehood” in 1959. Since then, Hawaiians have gone from being the Most Literate Christian Nation in the world status to being one of the most ignorant and subjugated people groups. The Democratic party and Union thugs have controlled all aspects of political life here since 1959 Statehood (except for just one Republican Governor)! We have been reduced to a 1 Party system of control. We have the worst public education, highest consumer costs, highest fuel and utility costs, worst business climate, highest taxes, worst corrupt politicians, highest housing costs (median home around $650,000.00!). Any wonder we produced the worst President! It was never even publicized that Hirono and Gabbard Buddhist and Hindu because the media here is so controlled. Other States BEWARE! This is the plan for YOU TOO! Jesus and His REAL Church are the only hope of good change

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 2:15pmThe attitudes of some here are exactly what needs to change on the conservative side if conservatives hope to get another President into office. I welcome these two women and only wish they would have come in on the conservative side but with such primitive and un-evolved attitudes such as are displayed by a few here, conservatives are going to keep loosing to the left.
Those believing your religion is the only “correct” one to God live in ignorance inmho. We are all apart of God and always have been and will be, no person or any religion can take that from you. Religion is man’s way of interpreting spirituality, it can hinder or help ones relationsip with God and it is up to each of us to use our own awareness and discernment to find out what is true and what is not.
Best way I have found to reach God is through my own heart…just as Jesus spoke of 2000 years ago. I find the Native American religion is also very beautiful as it is based on that direct interaction with the creator through nature, kinda like tv verses the net. You aren’t just preached at one way like tv but are interacting with God and taking personal responsiblity for that connection and your choices rather than relying upon another to interpret for you. (Very Conservative!)
I must compliment The Blaze as they are an example of what journalism use to be with regards to how fairly they handled this story. No wonder why The Blaze is number 157 in the US on alexa and still climbing.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 2:39pmThe comments here are the epitome of why Romney did not win. Many of your comments represents a blind faith in the “nothing in particular” that Romney represented in his campaign. Your negativism, labeling and name calling is based on a narrow perspective that is constantly fed by extremists like Beck, Limbaugh and much of the fox crowd. Romney got caught up in the extremism and it scared people. Obama is a moderate. If you think not, you really aren’t paying attention. This may surprise you, but many of us that voted for the President are doing well financially, have never been on government support and make enough to pay taxes every year. Step outside of your narrow world. There is a great country out there made up of really fine people on both sides.

As for doing well and paying taxes, it’s not our fault that you don’t see that the Left’s decisions are going to be an absolute disaster down the road. I didn’t vote for Obama because I am doing well. His victory was a triumph of vision, not of demographics. He won because he articulated a set of values that define an America that the majority of us wish to live in: A nation that makes the investments we need to strengthen and grow the middle class. A nation with a fair tax system, and affordable and excellent education for all its citizens. A nation that believes that we’re most prosperous when we recognize that we are all in it together.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 11:15amI’m sorry but I have to say as I am a Conservative Buddhist it isn’t the same definition of religion. Buddhism is a philosophy of how one should morally guide themselves on their path through life. Buddha said “Do not treat me as a God, treat me as a teacher” and encouraged his students to find their own religion and apply his teachings as the student sees fit. Buddhist statues are to remind us of the lessons we’ve learned. The precepts of Christianity are virtual identical to the precepts of Buddhism even though Buddhism is approximately 500-1000 years older that Christianity. We do not worship Buddha we show appreciation for his wisdom.

listen to Mike Savage. He has conjectured or ruminated about the “Wheel Theory of Relgion” Basically all relgions lead to the truth. I have some problems with this conjecture but also see some of the upside. Myself I am partial to Christianity. I am related to Buddhists (& not come to buddhism lately because it is something besides Christianity). Personally, I see some good in the (day to day) ethos of Buddhists. But I don’t like a religion where the beleif system is that life is an illusion & the point is to avoid pain by nonexisting. I don’t think that has much to offer. It doesn’t threaten me. Budhdhists don’t threaten me. You should be comfortable with the Christian message & have confidence if you are one. With all you vehemence I doubt you are one. I think you are fake.
BTW many of us listen to many different hosts. Many of us are Christian & we listen to Beck (A Mormon), Savage (a secular non practicing Jew), Medved ( a practicing Jew), Rush ( a Christian who won’t bring up thing from a religious viewpoint), Hannity (a Catholic), etc.

Somewhat off topic. What was the faith of all those who participated in voter fraud this past election? You can blame the democratic party or politicians, but takes people to do the voter fraud. It takes a person to vote more than once. It takes a person who is willing to sell their vote for a T-shirt and sandwich. It takes legislatures and the media to pass these early voting laws that led to massive corruption. It takes boards of elections whom refuse to remove bogus voter registrations and get out absentee ballots to the military on time. It takes judges who support the corruption. It takes both the corrupt politicians and those who look the other way to avoid losing their seat. It takes voters who vote based on skin color rather than on principle. It takes voters who vote to save their pet program rather than the country. It takes voters who don’t believe in God, but believe whatever the God-less media tells them, even if it is 180 degrees opposite from what they told them yesterday. It takes voters who go to church on Sunday and vote for abortion on Tuesday. So what happens when the majority of a nation is apathetic and/or corrupt and is willing to lie, cheat, and steal to get their way. You get Obama as president and the chaos and the judgement that will follow.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 7:33amDemocrats are never religious.
They use the religion of their forefathers and families as cover to help them get elected. Their only real faith is in Socialism. These two are just checked boxes.
Get it through your fat, drug-addled brains.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 9:56amDo you even know what socialism is? It is community ownership of production, not public ownership. Dem’s are communists, not socialists. They want the government to own production. On the flip side, Rep’s are fascists in that they want the corporations to control everything. Opposite sides of the same evil coin.

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 3:54pmJAY1975 – Democrats are a disturbed mix of Nazi, Socialist, Communist, Maoist…whatever…a big, steaming pile of political dung. It’s easier to use just one word…Socialist…than use a whole list or make up a new one. Don’t pretend you know something I don’t…because you don’t.
