Pentagon Confirms: Iran Fired on U.S. Drone Last Week

Earlier today, the Pentagon confirmed that, just five days before the U.S. presidential election, Iranian forces fired on a U.S. Air Force Predator drone in the Persian Gulf. This shocking report comes as America’s tensions with the Middle Eastern nation run high.

The incident occurred on Thursday, November 1 at 4:50 a.m. ET, according to spokesperson George Little. The unmanned drone, which was conducting what Little called “routine maintenance” at the time, was “intercepted.”

“The United States has communicated to the Iranians that we will continue to conduct surveillance flights over international waters over the Arabian Gulf consistent with longstanding practice and our commitment to the security of the region,” Little said in a Pentagon briefing. ”We have a wide range of options from diplomatic to military to protect our military assets and our forces…and will do so when necessary.”

The action is particularly aggressive, considering that the drone was in international airspace east of Kuwait at the time. According to CNN, the unit was not hit, but the Pentagon, nonetheless, is concerned. The Iranian jets involved in the incident were part of the nation’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, an especially-confrontational subset of Iran’s military forces.

“President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta were both advised early on about the unprecedented incident,” MSNBC reports, going on to note that Little claims that relevant Congressional officials were made aware of the situation at the time.

Initially, the Obama administration did not disclose the information to the public — an act that some may question, especially considering the proximity of the event to the 2012 presidential election. However, prior to the Pentagon’s confirmation, two officials went off-the-record to describe the Iranian action to CNN. Here’s how the events were relayed:

The drone’s still and video cameras captured the incident showing two SU-25s approaching the Predator and firing its onboard guns.

The Iranian pilots continued to fire shots that went beneath the Predator but were never successful in hitting it, according to the officials.

U.S. military intelligence analysts are still not sure if the Iranian pilots simply were unable to hit the drone due to lack of combat skill, or whether they deliberately were missing and had no intention of bringing down the drone. But as one of the officials said, “it doesn’t matter, they fired on us.”

Considering the ongoing friction between the U.S. and Iran, these actions are anything but encouraging, especially if the two nations are, indeed, poised to negotiate peaceful terms.

This is a breaking news story. Stay tuned for updates.

The Obama administration just forgot to tell us about an attack, an act of war by Iran, before the election. All our enemies are pushing Obama, and they are proving him to be either a spineless putz, or the enemy within. Obama advisors tell him if he bends over to Iran they will love him long time.

Act of war? If they ran a drone on us like that we’d consider it an act of war and shoot it down. I mean come on, I hold my fingers right in front of your eyes like I’m going to poke them. If you swap my hand away did you pick the fight?

Seriously? I hardly consider a nation’s military 50 miles from their shoreline shooting on an obviously unmanned warplane that is 12,000 miles from that nation’s shoreline to be an act of war. At best it would be an act of attempted vandalism. Believe me, I’d like to put a small chunk of metal between O’s eye sockets, but what you are doing is trying to incite war when we have been fighting in failing police action thinly veiled as “wars” for the last few decades. But the sad fact is that it still would not have made a difference in the election because Fox News would have been the only one reporting it anyway, just like Lybia and the 4 Americans that were murdered by terrorists. So ghost, you don’t like being blamed for the things the people in Cleveland did? What about you blaming the people of Cleveland when many of them voted against OBlamo? I am constantly being told by many of you that I should fall into the ocean just because I live in California. Being a conserviative in this state is very lonely, because we get crap from the liberals for being conservative, and from the conservatives because we live in this state. If the day comes when I can move, I will

      @GoJ,

Whoa, hold on there. Sold to Canada? That’s like selling someone a case of syphilis. Can’t imagine the price you’d get for that.

What’s more realistic is to triple the salt mining operation there and then let the weight of cleveland collapse it and sink into Lake Erie. It would be like mixing the story of Atlantis with Soddom and Gomorah.

      Shasta,

I was half kidding about Cleveland. I know some people from there. Unfortunately, most I know have either moved (talk to Roth on this thread), are planning on moving, or are stuck and hate having to live there. Every time we have an open carry event in or near Cleveland we are threatened with arrest and imprisonment, despite the fact that Ohio is an open carry state and folks (like me) routinely open carry without issue in the rest of the state.

No experience with Cali, outside of my wife’s aunt who lives there. She’s a loony aging hippy who fits the stereotype of a Leftist Californian to a tee, and she is a proud member of the Cult of Personality for Obama. :/

@Carnac – sorry guy, but the vast majority of counties never vote for the socialists. You can have Franklin, Cuyahoga and Hamilton if you want.

I don’t think anyone gets it. It doesn’t matter what b. hussien does…the electorate doesn’t care about the same things you do. They don’t care about the economy, unemployment, benghazi, iran, israel, etc. What the electorate cares about is not what is good for the country but what will help them in the immediate…there own little pet causes…like free contraception, gay marriage, eternal unemployment checks, etc. And most of all they care about screwing “the rich.” That is what motivates them. Real issues don’t matter. They will all eat cake while the city burns. They care about cake, not fires! B. Hussien could literally start enslaving people and the electorate won’t care as long as he promises them cake.

Ok, for those of you who don’t think Obama was indecisive in Libya and didn’t cover up their ineptitude so he could get re-elected, now comes the word that on November 1, 2012, Iran attacked one of our drones in international air space. The administration covered up this unprovoked attack as well and evidently was indecisive in responding to yet another attack on US resources. My question is do you see a pattern here and how many more attacks will we suffer because this self serving incompetent was re-elected for 4 more years?

The word I got is that the operator and the cameraman crapped themselves when they saw the Iranian jet in the rear-view mirror. “Is he shooting at us?”

Evidently, the Iranian pilot was not especially one of their aces because he literally ran out of ammo and then peeled off for Iranian air space. Do they carry missiles like our Hellfires? Don’t know.

Did the drone ask for back-up from the WH situation room? Was the drone painting the Iranian jet for back-up that never came? Did our Sewer Rat-in-Chief order back=up units to stand down?

      Hellfire is a laser-designated air-to-ground missile (that’s why it’s named AGM-114)- not very useful against a drone…
I think the real question is: where was the drone REALLY flying. Of course they are going to say it was in international waters. Our government is evil enough to fly them over their own country – I’m sure they have no problem spying on Iran illegally…

It’s hard to hijack an RC. The damned thing has to be nearly right on top of you long enough for you to jam all incoming signals and then sort out which one it is receiving on. Took us hours at UT, and a lot of luck.

If (and a biiiiiiig ‘IF’) it was in International Air, then it would be near impossible to do. Would be funny as hell, tho.
