The Texas family law judge caught on video beating his then-teenage daughter has been reinstated by the state Supreme Court, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Aransas County Court-at-Law Judge William Adams was suspended with pay in November 2011 after his daughter Hillary Adams posted the secretly recorded 2004 video of him whipping her repeatedly with a belt when she was 16.
The Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct launched an investigation and issued a public warning against Adams in September which questioned his suitability for his post but didn’t recommend his removal, according to the Chronicle. Adams waived his right to appeal the warning, after which his reinstatement was considered a formality, the newspaper reported.
The Texas Supreme Court issued a one-page order on Tuesday approving the agreement and lifting Adams’ suspension.
The seven-and-a-half-minute video caused an uproar and made national headlines after it was posted to YouTube just over a year ago. It showed Adams repeatedly beating his daughter, born with ataxic cerebral palsy, for illegally downloading music.
“I’m going to beat you into submission,” he said at one point.
Hillary Adams told CNN’s Anderson Cooper she chose to secretly record her father after the beatings escalated and that she had been holding onto it for seven years.
“I finally snapped,” she said of her decision to release it. “I just wanted to put it out there for my dad to see it and maybe a few other people to maybe help us reconcile and see that this is wrong.”
For his part, Adams said he “did lose [his] temper” but otherwise did nothing wrong.
“In my mind, I haven’t done anything wrong other than discipline my child after she was caught stealing,” he said.
Police did investigate Adams but did not pursue criminal charges because the statute of limitations had passed, the Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported.
It is unclear when Adams will return to the bench.
“Hillary and I are both really sad today,” Adams’ former wife Hallie Adams said in a statement. “I had really hoped the judicial review process would work. I had really wanted to see the public protected.”

Nov. 8, 2012 at 1:53pmJust watched the video. Hidden camera, how convenient. “But daddy, but daddy”…..what a setup! This heathen child needed more than what she got. A folded over belt……please. A little stinging at most. I’m an expert on this one……I got my **** beat a lot. I can’t ever remember getting whipped for behaving though. This girl has serious issues to set him up and hold on to that video all of these years. Now, with mom’s help and support she is finally getting even. Guess the ex-wife don’t like the current woman of the house.

Yeah, nothing like a grown man senselessly whipping his disabled daughter into submission for downloading a copy of music by some already wealthy musician. What possible business is it of ours that a control freak might be passing judgement on us in court?
[~invasion of this families privacy.]
The daughter has every right to share this video.
[The fact that this was secretly recorded and staged to make her dad look bad is not being taken into account. ]
Because a grown man beating a teenager with Cerebral palsy can be totally faked.
[This heathen child needed more than what she got.]
Right, just like in the bible she should have been stoned to death!
[This girl has serious issues to set him up and hold on to that video all of these years.]
Gee, I wonder where those serious issues came from… Maybe her daddy didn’t beat her enough.
[Guess the ex-wife don’t like the current woman of the house.]
Yeah it’s best women remain submissive to men just like the bible says.
[A lot of you disgusting libs want to be horrified by this man’s method of correction]
Yeah because it sure did correct her. She probably votes Obama now because the only explanation she got for doing something wrong was a beating.

The only thing I seen come from whipping a child is mean people that will use fist over reason because they don’t know any other way of dealing with people..

Nov. 9, 2012 at 12:44pmIt’s not a family concern. It’s most definitely abuse.
1. Downloading music – I have 20 gigs of illegal downloaded music. If someone decided to come to my house and discipline me in this manner they would get a 12 gauge in the chest. Downloading music as a crime is ridiculous because in the end it spreads free advertisement of such band. Which means a band that might have been unknown can reach stardom, sell more concert tickets, and Tshirts and other crap. The music industry has to evolve. If I listen to the radio and stand their with a voice recorder, am I stealing??? I have to assume this girl feels the same way, which is why she ultimately would be angered at a beating for something as this.
2. She’s 16. You don’t physically punish an adult. While in the US we legally consider an adult at 18, I’d say physical adulthood is puberty. The time when teenagers start to rebel.
3. She’s rebelling. No crap! A teenager! That’s like never happened in any family ever. It’s part of being an adult. At one point in time of your life you have to stop listening to your parents and start making choices for yourself. With this whole parent dependency 26 years of age healthcare thing it’s just expanding the time for children at act like children.
4. If he must physically discipline a 16 year old, he should be a man and spanked her with his bare hands. What a big man to bring a weapon in. He kept coming back for more, that’s ego! Not discipline.”I di

Nov. 9, 2012 at 3:58pmThat is such a bunch of bull. It is not an invasion of privacy for the victim of a crime to reveal the crime. There is no right to assault your wife or child in private. That is so incredibly stupid that it is a logical inference that you are Judge Adams or one of his supporters. The corrupt Judge Adams held that it is frivolous to believe a child’s outcry of abuse absent a video. His daughter had a video of his abuse yet she is at fault not him because she had a video and that was somehow wrong. Under Judge Adam’s own corrupt ruling, a child must have a video or else cannot be believed (this pure corruption but that was his ruling). Essentially, according to a the child beating corrupt judge adams, a child can never be believed or should be ignored. He and his friends are the most corrupt legal minds in existence.

Nov. 9, 2012 at 10:30pmI don’t know which is more appauling. The very upsetting video I just witnessed of a man brutally abusing his daughter or the comments I just read defending him and blaming his daughter. I have three children and my husband and I have NEVER abused our kids like that. There is a huge difference between spanking (which we do RARELY and never to hurt them, but rather to get their attention) and assaulting your kids. I wish I were a juror in his criminal trial which surely should happen. And what do you mean she “staged” this? Who the heck do you think she was going to turn to for help? Her dad was a judge for God’s sake. She said the abuse got much worse after this for years. She was a child and didn’t know how to handle this except to get it on video which she was too scared to do anything with for seven years. I’m proud of her for coming out with this video. I just wish she had done it sooner to avoid enduring seven more years of abuse. Sounds to me like she suffered her entire life with this monster towering over her. He’s a despicable coward and I hope he spends the rest of his life hanging his head in shame and I hope he never finds a place in this world where he is accepted, especially residing over a courtroom or God forbid another helpless child. This young lady is very courageous and I applaud her for exposing the true nature of that monster.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 1:05pmAlthough I believe in spanking (real spanking, not that light slap on the wrist crap) this goes far and away from being spanking. This is a F’ed up beating. Look, the girl got hers for what she did and (obviously) for being unruly and disobedient in general. I get that. But you can’t do what this man did. It solves nothing except to make her a fearful human being who later has tremendous issues with men and is generally abused by them. Moreover, this guy is goo’ing all over himself with power here, just look at him, he wants her to roll over into the position HE determined, and until he gets that he keeps coming back and beating her more and more. This is a power trip, not a discipline spanking.
Furthermore, at her age spanking is ineffective. You should have started early and constant with her. At 16 you are just destroying her psychologically. Want to fix this problem? Talk to her, tell her her actions have consequences and take her computer away. Take her smart phone away (give her an old flip phone.) Provide her with just the basics and tell her to go work if she wants better things. That, beyond all, teaches responsibility to a certain degree.
But beating a 16 year old does so very little except to have her fear and hate you passionately. It makes you seem like a power hungry barbarian and obviously shows that you screwed the pooch in raising her when she was younger.

Your empty rhetoric is childlike. Just because someone is beaten or spanked does not mean they will go around beating on others. Every child needs discipline. I believe in corporal punishment as a last resort. I spank my child when needed, and I have a happy, good, well behaved child that is obedient.
What this man did was not discipline, it was absolute abuse. He should be charged with child abuse and put on trial. It is absolutely disgusting that he was reinstated.
I’ll never forget when I was about four years old when a father grabbed his daughter by the hair, dragged her into the bedroom by her hair, and beat her terribly with a belt. Her crime? Being a little girl she wanted to be like mommy, so she snuck her nail polish and put some one.
And I’ll never forget when I was about seven, watching a man beat his children with a razor strap. He had been boasting about it prior too and decided he’d abuse his children in front of us just to show us. Crime? They did nothing.

Let’s see now. The girl illegally downloaded music. The father was rightly outraged and tried to discipline his 16 year old girl who was talking back and refusing to do anything he said. This was obvious by the way 1) she secretly recorded the incident and 2) she would not turn over and take her spanking. I think it was obvious that she was doing that on purpose for the camera to drive her dad crazy, but that’s just me. So, how bad was the girl hurt? She was not hurt at all. The father and mother were at their wits end and she was not hurt. Have you considered that?
So, you think that he should be charged with child abuse based on a video that was staged by his disobedient and rebellious daughter? You say you spank your child when needed, and I’m sure that if someone made a video of it trying to make you look bad, then NOBODY would think you were guilty of child abuse.
When the Aurora 16 shooter was found to be mentally deranged, I thought “Why do we let these crazy guys get guns?”, but then I thought, “Hold on, what if someone with a grudge against me accuses me of being crazy?” It put it into a different perspective. In the same way, if you want this guy charged with child abuse, what makes you immune to someone else’s charge of child abuse?
Be careful when you don’t know all the facts and what the consequences of your statements are.

I handle spanking in such a way, that I’d do it in front of a judge and a jury. I don’t abuse my child.

Bullsh!t! Any “outrage” at a teenager downloading music – in 2004 nonetheless – is feigned outrage. He could have taken the computer away. But instead he opted for attacking her like a raging animal.
[she secretly recorded the incident]
I wonder what gave her that idea? Maybe because it happened before and often? You’d think that much would be obvious…
[she would not turn over and take her spanking.]
How is that supposed to help his case? That just proves he gave in to his rage instead of calming himself down and being in control.
[So, how bad was the girl hurt? She was not hurt at all.]
Thank you for the sound diagnosis, Dr. Cliff!
[So, you think that he should be charged with child abuse based on a video that was staged by his disobedient and rebellious daughter?]
Absolutely. Unfortunately the statute of limitations had run out. And that is the only reason (excuse) that he wasn’t charged. Heck, if she was 2 years older, he would have been charged with assault. If that was his dog instead of his daughter, he would have been charged with animal cruelty. And if he wasn’t a judge, and certainly if he had a hispanic last name, the DA would have found a way around the statute of limitations and charged him.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 1:37pmMy damage was self inflicted by rebelling against them and not listening to their better judgement. I damaged myself and failed them. yet they never abandoned me or ever lost hope in me. Thats love.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 12:16pmI was lucky, I learned my lesson the first time my dad spanked me. I was about 4 and he was mowing the grass while I played in the front yard. He was going to go inside and get a drink of water, and told me, don’t step one foot in the road. I looked over my shoulder, and put ONE FOOT (actually one toe) in the road to spite him. He came running out of the house and spanked me all the way to the garage door. After that, it only took a look and I stopped doing wrong. At age 12 I stuck my tongue out at my mom and she slapped me. Some kids just don’t learn. Right now, at age 48, I still don’t talk back to my parents, or even raise my voice in an argument. And they’re Democrat with me being Republican.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 11:48amHere it is for my Christian friends:
Prov 13:24: “He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes (diligently).”
bullet
Prov 19:18: “Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.”
bullet
Prov 22:15: “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.”
bullet
Prov 23:13: “Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.”
bullet
Prov 23:14: “Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell (Shoel).”
bullet
Prov 29:15: “The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
Amen.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 11:56amThe “Rod” is the parent’s soul. Hint: that’s why Isaiah said God will break men down until their bare rods are sticking out of the ground.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 11:59amIf you beat them with a belt too often they’ll surely die, but the beater already has their reward or they wouldn’t be doing the beating.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 12:03pmThere is a line between discipline, actions taken to remedy bad behavior, and abuse. Discipline has an integral place in the upbringing of children, abuse does not, and this video in most places, for someone with no deep connections in the legal system, would result in well deserved criminal charges.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 12:12pmAnyone can find verses in the bible, take them out of context and have no clue what they are talking about. Plus, who said anything about religion in this? I’m sick of people like you always complaining about Christians, yet saying we need to be all nice to Muslim Extremists.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 12:01pmI don’t agree with the whipping from the front; he should have restrained her and made sure his swats (with a FOLDED belt, I might add) landed only on her **** and legs. But, I do agree that spanking your kid for committing an interstate felony is an appropriate punishment, followed by a few months without internet.
Of course, we could blame Metallica and Lady Gaga for pushing to make it such a strong criminal offense.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 11:48amIs this girl still living with her parents….? They both parents should be in jail and he definitly not behind a bench. There is no reason to beat a child like this or any parent to use that type of language to thier children. This man and his wife (?) are a disgrace.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 12:39pm@Navy. I completely agree with you. This was child abuse pure and simple. I am shocked at all the posters who have no or little problem with this “man’s” actions. I was beaten as a child and I can tell you that it does no long term good. I am successful and have a good job and wonderful girlfriend, but the scars of my childhood have made life tougher than it has to be. There is ALWAYS an option to beating your children!

Nov. 8, 2012 at 11:37amI saw this video.
This teenager was stealing and rebellious. Have any of you had a teen like this? Trust me, it takes great patience and self control to NOT lose your temper and we don’t always pass the test. She didn’t stand still for the spanking, which is a good rule when administering physical discipline for those who think it appropriate. In fact, I think it’s possible that she set up her father to get this video. She may have purposefully incited him with her behavior (dodging his spanking, begging himi to stop) in order to get a really ‘good’ video.
I do think that he went too far. Also, I personally stopped spanking at a certain age and she in my opinion was too old to spank. But no parent is perfect and we are only hearing one side of the story.

Nov. 8, 2012 at 12:03pmSeriously, if you can look at your kid and even think of doing this no matter what they did, you should be checked for mental issues. There is a huge difference between a spank and a violent angry beating. I pray for this girl to find trust in the lord and that she can move on with her life after this horrid act.
