Charles Krauthammer: Mainstream Media May Start Covering Benghazi ‘Now That the Story Is Attached to a Sex Scandal’

Dissecting the implications of General Petraeus’ resignation Friday as the head of the CIA, syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer said the media may finally start covering the Benghazi scandal now that there is a “sex scandal” attached to it.

“We will unravel all the threads of this in time, we’re just in the first few hours. But I think it’s worth noting what we do know, this is the end of a career of a truly great American.”

After rattling off a number of Petraeus’ impressive career accomplishments, Krauthammer explained that even though the general will not be testifying in next week’s congressional hearings, the Benghazi story will not get swept under the rug because of his absence.

“In an odd way, and sort of a discouraging way, now that the story is attached to a sex scandal, it will become a story that will be pursued by the media as was not pursued before,” he added.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist said the mainstream media has ignored the Benghazi scandal both in order to protect Obama and due to a lack of interest. But that could change.

“Given the nature of our journalism, it will now become the hottest story around and you can be sure that even the mainstream papers […] are going to get on it now,” he said. “It will unravel.”

Some, like Lt. Col. Ralph Peterson, say the timing of Petraeus’ resignation was just “too perfect” given the fact he was supposed to testify before Congress about the deadly Benghazi terrorist attack next week.

“I don’t like conspiracy theories, I may be totally wrong, but the timing of this, again, right after the election and right before Petraeus is supposed to get grilled on Capitol Hill, it’s really smells,” he said on Fox News.

Interesting, many in DC were hoping the Benghazi story would go away and now this sex scandal breathes new life into the story. I think Krauthammer is correct, the mainstream media just can’t resist a sex scandal.

Wishful thinking, Charles, but his will be personal character assassination to discredit Petraeus. There will be no light shed on Benghazi by the msm, and the most important witness against the WH will be brutally discredited by the state media. They will never let it “unravel” up to the WH.

Also, there was no “lack of interest” other than the one created by the media’s refusing to report and investigate.

This will make it all go away faster, because it’s just not a nasty enough sex scandal. An age-appropriate heterosexual affair with no element of prostitution or perversion and no flagrantly unprofessional conflict of interest? That’s not news, it’s life. We all know people who have ended up in that kind of situation, so we quite properly look on it as sad, not very exciting, and not really any of our business, and we aren’t going to want to hear any more about it.

While I largely agree with you Chet, the fact is that the FBI has been investigating this for some time. The agency has known about this situation, that put the General in a possibly compromised position at least in terms of national security, for a longer period than just a few days. There is no possible way that they did not go directly to the President, or at the very least Holder went to the president, long before the election, to tell him that his no. 1 guy in the intelligence service was compromised.

So the question now becomes; “How long did the President allow a compromised Petraeus to serve despite the threat to national security?”

He’s also been pushing for another unnecessary war of aggression against the just war theory when our boys are killing themselves in record numbers because it’s BS. You know I hate socialism. Romney wasn’t going to get rid of it, but he most certainly was going to pick another fight. I hate where we’re at now, but think it could be worse if Romney’s neoconservative foreign advisers were back in the Pentagon.

You’re wrong about Romney wanting to pick another fight. That’s exactly what was said about “Star Wars” Reagan before he was elected, and yet he generated more peace throughout the world than any other president since his administration.

The RINO Bushes don’t represent most Republicans, because Republicans have historically avoided wars during the last century. WW I and WWII – Democrats Wilson and FDR. Vietnam – Democrat Johnson. Which administrations weakened our defense systems? – Dems Carter and Clinton. Clinton was well aware of the dangers Osama Bin Laden posed to Americans, but he chickened out when he had an opportunity to assassinate him. (Ironic that Clinton praised Obama for ‘doing the admiral thing’ by taking out Bin Laden. What a sniveling wimp … and liar!)

Peace through strength, my friend. Like Reagan – Romney was promoting peace through strength.

Let me guess JUSTANGRY … you’re one of those fools who indirectly voted for Obama by voting for RP, GJ or by sitting at home. You should be really angry with yourself for moving our country even deeper into unsustainable state of socialism … and probably another war.

@Look4DBigPicture, 17 of 24 of Romney’s national security advisers were the lying ass neocons from the Bush administration. He said that if Netanyahu wanted to bomb Iran, which they do, he’d assist. Our military in insanely potent as is. Increasing it’s budget 2 trillion dollars is overkill. We already spend more than twice as much on the military per year as China, Russia and the NATO combined. It’s kind of hard to argue peace through strength when we’ve constantly been at war since WW2. The leading cause of death for a troops is suicide. I’ve been in theater twice in Iraq and once in Yugoslavia and I know what I witnessed personally. I think it’s the wrong course of action. When folks like Bilderberger Krauthammer spread their propaganda for more of it I believe it’s irresponsible, void of any morals and fiscally irresponsible.

As for Romney for president, I asked numerous times what socialist policies of Obama’s is Romney proposing to get rid of to crickets. He supported the abuses to our bill of rights, has the same economic philosophy and warped view of Cosntitutionalism as Obama, so it didn’t matter to me if Romney or Obama were in the white house. I seen no substantial difference between the two other than social issues which are unconstitutional in the first place. So I voted for Gary Johnson to try for the funding and ballot access and damn proud of not being a sheep. The bottom line is I actually fear fascism more than socialism despite h

Shows how pathetic and discredited the leftist MSM has become: the scandal alone should be enough for true journalists and their editors to charge forward seeking hard facts with hard questions. The truth needs to come forward and now they will treat it as nothing more than a tabloid matter, or a scandal of the general while white washing the rest of Benghazi.

Obama has thrown Petreus to the wolves as we have expected to give himself cover for the mess; and now we will see who is blackmailed into falling on their sword next to the general.

This administration believes that we are stupid and this past week half of the American people proved them right. Now they think they can get away with anything. We have to convince our brothers and sisters and countrymen that these despots are at war with us. The understanding of this is a matter of life and death. This reality is the most important one for us as humans to agree on.

What would have happened to the Jews had they known the nazi’s intention when they were told to get in the box cars!? Your progressive brothers are like these Jews. If you don’t convince them they will not make it.

These congressional investigators need to ram this up his lying black @ss every single day.
Eventually in these situations they bully the wrong person who fights back and says F you.
Particularly Gowdy from SC — dude is a pitbull.

BAG I hope you’re right but as you know the senate is controlled by the dems so a trial in the senate is a nonstarter. The house could and should impeach the POS,hell Clinton got impeached for getting a BJ from a fat girl. The only way it could advance to a trial in the senate is if the pressure was so great they had to do it. If certain senators thought their jobs were on the line for not acting on this.
