The head golf coach at Huntingdon College, a private Methodist college located in Montgomery, Ala., has been fired after he verbally exploded on his players in an extended profane rant following the team’s 11th place finish in a 12-team tournament in Ohio last month.
Deadspin posted the audio of former head coach Matt Mahanic’s wild rant on Thursday. On Friday, the school’s website had removed his name and named an interim head coach.
Apparently, it wasn’t the first time that Mahanic lost his cool. The difference this time was someone on the bus was recording when the coach went off the rails.
Listen here, the yelling starts at around 1:40 (WARNING! Graphic language):
Here are some of the highlights from the clip, brought to you by Deadspin, edited for content by TheBlaze:
“That is f**king horrendous. Horrendous that nobody can shoot f**king par on that golf course. That is the most f**king embarrassed I’ve ever been in my life, having to walk around that f**king scoreboard and look at those other f**king coaches—F**king 11 teams beat us this week! Eleven f**king teams! Goddam*it!”
“I gotta f**king go up there and watch that bullsh*t you four call golf! Like watching f**king paint dry! My dad looked and me and said, ‘Why the f**k are you recruiting these kids?’”
“I’m ready to lose my f**king mind. There is no f**king helping you! …F**king not a big deal, though. It’s not a big deal. F**king hunky-dory.”
“We f**king don’t deserve sh*t. F**king—we haven’t broke 300 all year. Four f**king chances in nice weather, and we haven’t broken 300 yet. F**k me.”
“I don’t want to hear a f**king word out of anybody until we get back to Kentucky[?]. Put your f**king headphones on, go to sleep, I don’t give a shit. I had to watch you play golf for the last 54 f**king holes. Please do not let me hear your f**king voice right now.”
And here is the school’s statement:
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Huntingdon College President J. Cameron West announced today that the College’s director of golf, Matt Mahanic, has been dismissed, effective immediately.
“As a member of Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, we adhere to the principles expressed in the NCAA Bylaws,” said West. “To quote the Bylaws, ‘Individuals employed by or associated with a member institution to administer, conduct, or coach intercollegiate athletics shall act with … sportsmanship at all times so that intercollegiate athletics as a whole, their institutions and they, as individuals, represent the honor and dignity of fair play and the generally recognized high standards associated with wholesome competitive sports.’”
Huntingdon College, grounded in the Judeo-Christian tradition of the United Methodist Church, is committed to nurturing growth in faith, wisdom, and service and to graduating individuals prepared to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

You cannot SHELTER THESE KIDS FOREVER. “Faith, wisdom, service, etc” are excellent values but what about constant practice, determination, and, most of all WINNING…sports isn’t won by faith!! Hopefully this coach gets a job at a public university where he can coach the serious players. Private religious schools always suck at sports cuz they’re strict standards drive away the best players.

And that is why the Disciples were mostly fishermen – not sportsmen.
Are my sons competitive? Yes. Do they want to win? Yes. Do they use profanity? No. Typically, winners are about self-promotion: themselves and their team. Not exactly a Christ-like beatitude.
The drive to succeed is actually God-based; He put the will and the desire in us. But HE is first, not the trophy. If first place is a valuable tool to enhance His message, then be the winner. If you’re winning to stake your claim in society, then go find another college. (Not that I know anything about this one)

You have to give him do extra credit for talking to the four, driving, and never losing focus all the way laying out an action plan for the guys before the next match.

Your own children aren’t your own, and you get no deep down buzz in your soul from them, and therefore you sign them up for T-Ball as soon as they can walk, because that’s the only way you get joy from them is them stroking your own ego for your own glory. Because they’re all bastards growing up in another husbands house.

Nov. 9, 2012 at 8:15pmI’d punch that coach in the mouth. That is the hardest freaking game I’ve ever played. I can hit an 85 mph slider, and yet, I can’t hit a freaking 2″ ball that isn’t even moving. F you coach. Maybe the kids need a little beer to loosen them up. I usually knock down a 12 pack on the front nine, and shoot lights out on the back nine!

Nov. 9, 2012 at 8:11pmIt’s called motivation. Oh yeah, common practice over the last 100 years in sports. Only problem is, now a days you have to treat kids with respect. I’m sure they were all expecting a participation trophy, instead they got a good old fashioned chewing out for coming in last place. What’s he supposed to say, “golly gee fellas, nice job out there. You gave it your best, well you tried, umm well at least you showed up. We’ll do better next time. Let’s all go to Pizza Hut…my treat!” That person only exist in 1950′s movies. They weren’t even like that for real in 1950. They gave tongue lashing that would rival any Marine drill sergeant. Toughen up boys, you still need balls to play golf…See what I did there.

Nov. 9, 2012 at 8:35pmMotivation? Motivation is when your coach tells you about the things you did well, what you did wrong, and how to improve. Then the coach tells you a story or something to bolster your mood and keep your confidence levels up.
Screaming incoherent rants laced with obsenities is not motivation. I wouldn’t blame a single one of them for telling him where to shove it.
And, in case you didn’t notice, this is a religious institution. This man should know better.
Get the heck out of here with your ‘motivation’ BS.

That is embarrassing for the whole team and college. I want this guy to be my personal coach! I could see this being a problem in youth sports, but college is the big leagues for many — even for social con colleges.

Nov. 9, 2012 at 8:04pmAnimal? I don’t think that’s necessarily the case.
Now, Coach did a little more F-bombing than what we’re accustomed to hearing on a regular Friday, but he was a coach in a locker room, not a hostess in a short skirt and heels.
Sometimes, you gotta get a little riled up to inspire the athletes.
Then again, he is a GOLF coach, and I’m not sure if the kind of kids who are playing golf on scholarship are really leathery enough to withstand the rough language.
When I was playing hardball way back when, our coach would cuss like a battleship’s worth of drunken sailors. And he didn’t hold back from the occasional slap upside the head.
As far as I know, not one of us boys died as a result of his efforts. In fact, some of us remember the old man fondly. And we won quite a few ballgames, I’ll note.
If a liberal was running the athletic conference, they wouldn’t need to worry, by the way. They’d just average every teams’ score and would then commence to handing out First Place Tie/You Showed Up trophies to everyone.
What’s happening with the guy wearing that long sleeved white shirt under his golfing shirt, by the way? I do believe that’s a fashion faux pas–whether you teach at a Methodist school, a Catholic institution or even in a Mosque!
