CIA Director Gen. David Petraeus resigned from his post after admitting to having an extramarital affair.

In a statement to CIA employees Friday, Petraeus said he submitted his resignation to President Barack Obama on Thursday and Obama accepted it Friday afternoon.

“After being married for over 37 years I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair,” Petreaus said. “Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours.”

Fox News reported the affair was with his biographer and was discovered during the course of an FBI investigation on an “unrelated and much broader case.” According to Fox, journalist and biographer Paula Broadwell’s name came up during the investigation, which led to uncovering the affair. The FBI had reportedly been concerned Petraeus might be some sort of victim, but no evidence to substantiate that has been uncovered.

Obama said in a statement Petraeus “has provided extraordinary service to the United States for decades” and that his lifetime of service “has made our country safer and stronger.”

Obama added that he has the utmost confidence in CIA Acting Director Michael Morell and that his “thoughts and prayers are with Dave and Holly Petraeus.” Holly Petraeus serves in the Obama administration as part of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The CIA has been under sharp scrutiny over the Sept. 11 terror attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya that killed four Americans. Petraeus had been scheduled to testify Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee about the assault, but a committee spokesman told Politico that Morell will now testify instead.

TheBlaze’s national security expert Buck Sexton questioned the rationale behind Petraeus’ resignation, saying an affair didn’t strike him as grounds for leaving his CIA post.

“While the military officially condemns adultery under its regulations, I’m not aware of a similar prohibition in the intelligence community,” Sexton said. “One could argue an affair creates a threat of blackmail, but the Petraeus resignation, coming so soon after Obama’s re-election, seems to leave many unanswered questions. Something is not right here.”

According to CNN, White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters just before Petraeus’ resignation was announced that “the president thinks General Petraeus has done an excellent job.”

The retired four-star general took charge of the CIA in Sept. 2011 after leading the military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Petraeus’ full resignation letter, via NBC News:

HEADQUARTERS Central Intelligence Agency

9 November 2012
Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the President to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position as D/CIA.  After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair.  Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours.  This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation.

As I depart Langley, I want you to know that it has been the greatest of privileges to have served with you, the officers of our Nation’s Silent Service, a work force that is truly exceptional in every regard.  Indeed, you did extraordinary work on a host of critical missions during my time as director, and I am deeply grateful to you for that.

Teddy Roosevelt once observed that life’s greatest gift is the opportunity to work hard at work worth doing.  I will always treasure my opportunity to have done that with you and I will always regret the circumstances that brought that work with you to an end.

Thank you for your extraordinary service to our country, and best wishes for continued success in the important endeavors that lie ahead for our country and our Agency.

With admiration and appreciation,
David H. Petraeus

President Barack Obama’s full statement:

David Petraeus has provided extraordinary service to the United States for decades. By any measure, he was one of the outstanding General officers of his generation, helping our military adapt to new challenges, and leading our men and women in uniform through a remarkable period of service in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he helped our nation put those wars on a path to a responsible end. As Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, he has continued to serve with characteristic intellectual rigor, dedication, and patriotism. By any measure, through his lifetime of service David Petraeus has made our country safer and stronger.

Today, I accepted his resignation as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. I am completely confident that the CIA will continue to thrive and carry out its essential mission, and I have the utmost confidence in Acting Director Michael Morell and the men and women of the CIA who work every day to keep our nation safe. Going forward, my thoughts and prayers are with Dave and Holly Petraeus, who has done so much to help military families through her own work. I wish them the very best at this difficult time.

I agree. EVEN if “THEY” were using this to make this man cow-tow… PETRAEUS did become (after all) David BETRAY US. I was so friggin’ mad when I first heard this but now….

I want to extend my sympathies to his WIFE. This Lady has followed this twerp from post to post, been a good sport, raised his kids and and taken care of his house all these years. MEMO TO MEN:

IF you want to have an affair…have the guts to SET THE WIFE FREE. GIVE HER all the $$$ you can, let her have the house, the car, whatever… LET her leave with DIGNITY…but don’t you dare subject her to this type of scathing inspection. EVEN if SHE was the wicked witch of the West… you still DIVORCE her, you lousy twerp, before you have an affair.

GOOD GRIEF. IS there anyone of HONORABLE CHARACTER out there? Aside from the MAN you didn’t elect as PRESIDENT? 80% of the rich, 52% of the Catholics, 94% of those making $50 K or less; EVANGELICALS 26%; Jews 70% all voted for OBAMA. (of those who voted…40% still didn’t vote) To hell with all of you. You deserve what you get. All you creepy, gutless wonder Cabinet Position holders, those who sat and watched the side show AKA BENGHAZI… while MEN DIED…
YOU BOUGHT. YOU deal with it.
THE NEXT PERSON who tells me to do X ,Y or Z to “take my country back” I’m going to throw up on. I don’t want it back. I’m sticking with GOD.

My first reaction too. The CIA has staff whose total prerequisite is to be able to entice the enemy, and Gen Petraeus has been listed as the enemy since the days when hillary pronounced him gen betrayus. I guess he was put into that position to destroy him, and while it was being done, four heroic Americans were murdered when the CIA wouldn’t come to their rescue and the state dept and w h ordered the military to stand down. May God have mercy on all Americans.

Petraeus is only the first shoe to fall in the Benghazi treason.

I’d imagine that he and his wife had a little conference where he outlined the options: I can resign as the result of an affair; or, you’ll find me slumped over my steering wheel in the garage.

There will be MANY more conferences taking place like that in ALL branches of the government that were involved in the treason of Benghazi. The outrage within the intelligence community is palpable and the traitors will be dealt with. Maybe it will be a secret account in Caracas or a property in Cyprus that was bought with Saudi funds; but, in the end, all the traitors will be dealt with.

The Chicago thugs should start crapping their drawers because they are in the line of retribution. They are powerless before the professionals and they know it.

I can feel the sting of your words. I too feel that exact sense of betrayal. Betrayed by friends, family, “catholics”, and anybody else who voted for more of this same sh1t. We have truly crossed the Rubicon. It’s no longer just 4 more years of o’dumb@ss. THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN TURNED “ON”. There is no turning back, as we begin the decent into full blown socialism, and quite possibly into communism, given the mindset of our fellow Americans. The conservative talking-heads (some that u have mentioned) that had given me hope, our still talking. But I can no longer listen. It’s all just talk. None of it matters. Agenda 21 – weapons bans – water restrictions – fuel shortages – food prices – constraints on our liberty – all this sh1t is coming, and it’s going to come fast. The great betrayer is already working on our 2nd. Those who take will see the heavy hand of govt as a benefactor, those of us who make are about to get a major b1tch slap. Keep a low profile. Stock up and tell no one. Prepare. Become a taker, and take some of the freebies the govt is handing out, before it all come crashing down. Your going to need it. I now u may not agree with my last sentiment, but I finding it more and more difficult to tolerate all of these people around me, taking what they have not earned, and living high off the hog, as my family and I have to go with out.

Hey, I am not proud to admit it, but I had a few moments here and there when my dear wife (God bless her soul) wasn’t in the same room as I was while I was having relations.

Now, those indiscretions were a mistake, but they weren’t the kind of things that warranted a firing from my job!

Admittedly, I wasn’t in charge of the nation’s secret police, but you get the idea…

If he was pressured to quit because of his dalliance, I think he got a raw deal!

If he was using that as an excuse to duck the Obama Administration, I wish he’d have been more courageous.

If this is part of some Libya-related cover-up, I’ll be infuriated!

Let me add one thing, he appears to be smooching some gal in the photo. I’m working under the assumption that his lips are locked with Mrs. General Patreus and not some random harlot. Meanwhile, old Joe Biden seems to be interested in a menage au trois, based on his facial expression!

There is noting wrong in serving in a presidential administration when the opposite party is in power.
One should be ready to resign not due to scandal but due to conscience if something untoward happens.

For one I think you see more email & meet more people & so can keep a better tab on things.

But one should always be ready to resign & be vocal about if something is wrong. It can have an effect. In the 1950s we had the “Revolt of the Admirals” & that changed defense policy. The normal civilian answer is that they were suppose to stay meek & quiet & say yes sir, (yes sir 3 bags full). The didn’t. They could have been cashiered with loss of rank if the political class had dared. Being retired a ex military man like Petraeus could have resign in July or August after the 2nd or 3rd request for protection by Ambassador Chris Stevens was summarily denied by a delusional President who wanted to project a tranquil Potemkin village view of Libya.

Putin may have called for the hit & provided the seed money & a little prodding to some jihadi groups, but ultimately Obama is responsible because of his inaction. We’re arming the Syrian Rebels & Putin well remembers Afghanistan. So he put the hit on the Ambassador

Check out the Benghazi gate coverage at this site.

The long & short of it was that the Ambassador was there to destroy Qaddaffi era weapons to keep them form falling into the hands or terrorists. What he was really doing was shipping the serviceable weapons to Syria via Turkey , while destroying some stocks or unservicable weapons for show for the lap dog media.

Did Putin order it. It would be hard to prove but he does have motive.

Pattyhenry; if you see this what you need to do to assure your food supply is purchase non-hybrid seeds. They are available at many different outlets but Emergency Essentials is usually reasonable on all long term emergency supplies.
Buy mainly dehydrated foods because you simply won’t need the freeze dried long term stuff. If they are unable to control our destruction it will spiral out of control next year after the rest of what needs to be aligned is in place.
Watch what happens at the Copenhagen Convention this December. That is when the One World Government is supposed to be announced. If it isn’t, then we will have more time, if it is, it’s close.
Sorry I can’t give you more info but I’ve been out of the loop for almost 13 years now.
Whatever you do, be prepared. If they can control what they will do, you have food to eat. If they can’t, you will have food to eat. That is a win-win. Also don’t forget water purification equipment. Starvation takes 3-5 weeks. Thirst takes a week or less.

Before you throw Petraeus completely under the bus consider the possibility that he was being blackmailed by the Presidents handlers to testify that HE believed the Benghazi attack was a spontaneous uprising, and he is resigning now and letting the affair become public so that he can tell the truth.

Of course there is also the possibility that he is being paid off to become the fall guy and keep the Presidents hands clean regarding the senseless deaths of four Americans in Libya. Time will tell

Yes, I do believe you’re much more astute regarding this scandal than most. This one’s pretty clear to me; it’s not passing the “smell-test” because it stinks to high heaven. They knew about his affair, and used it against him so he wouldn’t testify against them. I’d ask America to leave his affair to be judged by his God, and his wife. (That one’s going to have no bearing on our lives, what-so-ever). We really can’t be his judge on that; however, if we’re are able to get him to testify regarding Benghazi, that, will more-than-likely benefit all of us GREATELY! To all of my lady friends, don’t focus on the momentary grain of sand he’ll have to explain to his wife. He has a mountain of evidence to give to the world! Please, let he & his wife alone; let’s give him enouragement not to re-coil, but speak to the American people the truth about Benghazi. Their personal issues arn’t ours, his knowledge about Benghazi, is!

That’s just the last straw. There were rumblings in the seal camp of people wanting to come out and relay the true story of what happened in the “Osama Raid”, and then the convenient chopper attack that no one should have known about, all under his watch, and the lack of response.

Then there’s his statement in glee about how great it is all new appliance companies installing smart chips will include a direct link to the CIA complete with recording devices so they can record everyday American homes.

No, this man is not a friend to the US constitution or our citizenry. Now this scandal, and it’s kept very quiet when he was obviously caught? He’s also resigning to keep it clean with the Obama administration, and himself. This seems very convenient for both Hillary and Patreus to leave amid a scandal where everything will go hush-hush, and with them all blame that was assigned by the MSM (though in clinton’s case, her own statement, in Patreus’ case…well, you know).

Is Petraeus a great patriot who’s leaving because he can no longer stomach being a part of the greatest pack of anti-American criminals ever, otherwise known as the Obama administration?

Is he a sniveling coward who left brave Americans to die in Benghazi and fears that he will be forced out in disgrace once the truth becomes known?

Is he just a poor schmuck who got caught, or knew he was about to get caught, sleeping with his secretary?

The stench of paranoia is so strong here that I am thinking of burying my computer. Will someone puhleeze determine the party line so we can all know what to think?

      1) This guy didn’t just have a sudden case of conscious and decided to step down. The way these things happen in government is that someone has the proof and is threatening to go public or else…

If it were media types, they would have just aired it. If it were gov types that stood something to lose, they would give him the option of stepping down

      2) This is Obama’s MO. He won his first two Illinois elections by getting his team to dig up & unseal court docs that showed evidence of adultery.

      3) VERY suspicious this comes less than a week after election, and less than a week before Bengazi meetings.

That’s not being honest, he was caught. He simply resigned to save the administration a scandal. Now the burden lies solely on him. If anything that was somewhat honorable, but he’s already proven himself to be a disgusting big government, anti-constitutionalist who doesn’t even have the grace to send men right away, or even hours after they have a full accounting of the situation in Benghazi. I am now called to question the timely death of so many Team 6 seals in Afghanistan under his watch, after some were starting to talk about the “raid”. Then there is the utter lack of military response on his part during the raid to recover important technology, rather letting it fall into the hands of China. Who can forget his serious claim with a smile about the ability to track the voices and actions of ordinary Americans through their appliances.

This is not a man to be praised or honoured. An honest man he is not. He had no choice but to submit. The only problem is now this constitutional rapist’s crimes against the very country he swore to protect will be forever lost, all due to a sexual scandal. I hope this is not the end for him, and the independent news keeps a spotlight on his face for a good long time.

I don’t buy it. Sounds like a great way to get out of answering questions as to why he’s leaving. “It’s a private matter, family hurting, respect our privacy, blah, blah, blah” Then he lays low to “work on the marriage” for a few months until people forget about it.

I suppose it could be true…but what better cover to get out of answering questions about why he’s REALLY leaving.
