John Boehner Made One Thing Clear During Friday’s Presser on the Fiscal Cliff: ‘This Is [Obama's] Opportunity to Lead’

WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — House Speaker John Boehner says any deal to avert the so-called fiscal cliff should include lower tax rates, eliminating special interest loopholes and revising the tax code. But he also continually hammered home what could become the mantra for the rest of the year: It’s time for Obama to “lead.”

Speaking to reporters Friday, the Ohio Republican insisted that changing the tax code and making it more efficient would lead to greater revenue for the government. That, however, seemed to take a back seat to putting the responsibility on the president. Business Insider captured many of the quotes, and we’ve highlighted the “lead” suggestions in bold:

This is an opportunity for the president to lead. This is his moment to work on a solution that can pass both chambers,” Boehner said.

He says lowering tax rates and cleaning up tax code will produce economic growth and create jobs, and produce “more revenue.”

“I hope discussions begin soon so we can forge an agreement that will pass Congress,” Boehner says.

Onto the Q&A session:

“When the president and I have been able to come to an agreement, there has been no problem in getting it passed in the House,” he says. Of course, they haven’t been able to on a tax deal.

This is his opportunity to lead,” he adds of the president.

Boehner was asked about his party’s standing after the election

“It’s clear that as a political party we have some work to do,” he said.

Next, he’s asked about exit polls showing that about 60% of Americans support raising taxes on incomes above $250,000.

“The problem with raising tax rates on the wealthiest Americans is that more than half of them are small business owners.”

But he adds: “Everything — on the revenue side and spending side — we have to look at.”

On immigration, Boehner says he is “not going to get any details.” He says it’s Obama’s “opportunity to lead” on the issue.

Boehner said he had a brief conversation with President Barack Obama earlier this week as the chief executive and congressional leaders negotiate a way to avoid a fiscal cliff that economists say would plunge the nation into another recession.

Boehner also indicated that raising the debt limit that the government will reach sometime in the spring should be part of any negotiations.

    Dear Mr Boehner,
Your advice to the president is misguided. You stated that the president has the opportunity to lead now. Might I remind you sir, that he has had ample opportunity to display his leadership skills and has instead, given us impersonations of singers, golfers, basketball players, Pulitzer Peace Prize recipients, apologists and a wannabee SEAL Team Member Leadership isn’t taught to community organizers since they already have a captive audience. The true mark of a leader is one who instills confidence in his followers that he has their best interest at heart rather than a propensity to thump his own chest.

Boehner is going to have to start saying what people know. He is going to have to take a hard stand for conservativism and let the chips fall. Obama got out all of his votes. Republicans had about 3 million that did not vote. We still could have won this election. Romney was not blunt or (frankly) mean enough to win this election. There were a a lot of things Romney left unsaid.

First of all, nobody has proposed reducing rates for top earners, just not increasing them. Second there is plenty of evidence that raisng tax rates in a poor ecomomy does not raise revenues. Third, you can raise all the rates you want but, until the Feds quit spending like fools it won’t be enough to lower deficits or the debt.
    *******

Do you have any evidence besides your own opinion? Reason i ask is there was a study done by the non partisan conressional research service that shows zero corolation between reduced rates for the wealthy and economic growth. In fact the study said all lower reates for the rich do is further the inequality between rich and poor. Bush lowered taxes and created zero net jobs in his 8 years in office. I agree spending shoudl be reduced ( military is the biggest driver of spending and i am a war time vet so i know about the waste) but it should be done with raising taxes on the wealthy.

Please prived evidence since we all know the GOP is factually challenged. And you can bring up Reagan all you like but that wa s30 years ago and most wiht an economic background would point to reduction of interest rates as the reason for growth. Again, provide facts

Why pay congressional members to act on our behalf when they are useless to this country that “will” go over the fiscal cliff? With the leftists believing they are the scandal-less, intelligent party of gods who know what is best for “we the people”, this country is history. They have indeed completed the biggest fraud ever on this nation. This link says it all about this admin and how proud they are of themselves.

I have been Republican all my life. I also have worked all my life thinking that hard work and dedication meant something. I have now been layed off 3 years. I am 60 years old, and the only jobs that are available pay nothing. I am tired of fighting. I have now been accepted for food stamps, I have also applied for every government program that I can legally apply for. I no longer care after the last election. Hard work means nothing, and the business owners will no longer pay a living wadge, as long as they still have there big houses and toy’s.

I was once a business owner. Obama and his mess fixed that. I don’t live in a fancy house. Nor did I drive a fancy car. I paid my employees higher than “living wage” and provided each employee with healthcare paid for by me (they had to pay extra if they wanted to add family to the policy). My business is gone and I now work for someone else. The CEO who owns the company I now work for started with a small shop back in the ’60′s and built an empire that employs 900+ people. He pays above the “living wage” plus gives us vacation pay, sick pay, holiday pay, 401k, incentive bonus for working the hours assigned, a Christmas bonus (the amount you get depends on how many years you work there, but the bottom amount is $50). Oh, did I tell you, this company is in fly-over country where the population of the county is 10,000 people? Yep, this business owner contributes to the economy of our county and to the surrounding counties for at least 100 miles. Isn’t he just a piece of crap? (NOT) He also lives in this county, he has a nice home, but there are nicer ones in town. He also drives a Ford Explorer. He is a pilot and owns his own aircraft, so maybe he is an elite bastard after all. (Again, NOT).

Despite all Obama says and the DNC claims, they own the mess and will never admit it; they will blame the conservatives for all of their troubles and the coming collapse of the economy while demanding they give Obama ‘emergency powers’ to deal with the problems.

Obama will only lead us into one of two events – over the cliff or into a dictatorship. The best thing he and his cabinet can do is resign at once.

House Speaker John Boehner needs to Grow a Spine, or a set of Balls, to tell the people that Obama Care is the Law of the Land, what right does he have to do that ? There’s plenty of states that have nullified it. And I Hope my state does the same. I hope that someone else that is a Republican that has a spine will take over the House. The Republicans could have stopped Obamacare in its tracks:

      ——————–
“This example demonstrates that Congress has ultimate spending power and that when it suits favored interest groups, it will use it. Most members of our Republican-controlled House of Representatives say they’re against Obamacare. If they really were, they surely would attach a legislative rider or some other legislative device to the Department of Health and Human Services’ appropriation bill to ban spending any money on Obamacare; they have the power to. But they don’t have the political courage to do so, and their lives are made easier by the pretense that it’s the president controlling the spending. And we fall for it.”
Walter Williams: “Who May Tax And Spend?”

However, the GOP didn’t even offer up so much as a wimper…..they just let it slide on through…

Good to see the GOP still living in its fact free fantasy land. Obama doesnt have to run anymore wiht Boehner does, I hope Obama calls bluff and doesnt sign a deal wihtout tax increases on the rich. The voters have spoken and will no longer be held hostage by the GOP looking out for the top1% anymore. You are lected to represent 100% of your voters not the top 1%, a majoriy spoke and agree wiht raising taxes on top earners so that is what shoudl be done.

UNtil they GOP can provide facts that reducing rates for the rich stimulates the economy the GOP can pound sand. There are plenty of studies that show raising rates doesnt stimulate growth so unitl the GOP can address facts they will lose.

Then again you folks on here still think Obama wasnt born here and is a communist and you all are part of the problem So go drink your two if by tea and wear your $130 jeans you get from Beck. Being lead by un educated drug addict sports radio guys has done so well for you huh?

If you give him anything less than 100% of what he asks for, the press will hang it’s failure on you…and it WILL fail. Give him all the rope he wants to hang himself with.
