Romney Was ‘Shell-Shocked’ After Learning of Election Loss, Aides Say: ‘It Was Like a Sucker Punch’

US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his wife Ann wave after Romney conceded defeat to President Barack Obama on November 7, 2012 in Boston. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was more-than-convinced he’d win on Tuesday. As TheBlaze previously reported, the contender told reporters earlier that day that he had only prepared a victory speech and had not yet written concession remarks. While images published the morning after his loss show him content and drinking chocolate milk with his family, the situation just hours before was dire, as aides describe the former Massachusetts governor as “shell-shocked” in the wake of defeat.
“We went into the evening confident we had a good path to victory,” one senior adviser told CBS News, showcasing just how surprised the Romney team was by the stunning loss. “I don’t think there was one person who saw this coming.”
As the night progressed, though, fear created earlier in the day by reports that Obama was gaining ground turned to panic as key points in the map began turning blue. Once Ohio fell, the team knew that a path to victory was impossible, however processing this reality was difficult in the moment.

The New York Times captured part of the timeline that comprised the dramatic end to the campaign, as the Romney team monitored results from inside of a Boston hotel:
It was 11:30 p.m., and Romney field teams in Ohio, Virginia and Florida called in, saying the race was too close for the candidate to give up. At least four planes were ready to go, and aides had bags packed for recount battles in narrowly divided states. Bob White, a close Romney friend and adviser, was prepared to tell the waiting crowd that Mr. Romney would not yet concede.
But then, Mr. Romney quietly decided it was over. “It’s not going to happen,” he said.
As Ann Romney cried softly, he headed down to deliver his speech, ending his second, and presumably last, bid for the White House. Four decades earlier, his father and inspiration, George Romney, a former Michigan governor failed in his own such quest.
“There’s nothing worse than when you think you’re going to win, and you don’t,” another adviser said. “It was like a sucker punch.”
CBS News also noted that Romney purportedly “hastily composed” notes for a concession speech, adding corroboration to his claims earlier in the day that he was prepared for a decisive victory.

“He was shellshocked,” another adviser proclaimed. Despite dispair and surprise hitting him hard, the candidate stood before the American people, called for unity and admitted defeat.
“I ran for office because I am concerned for America … Like so many of you, Paul [Ryan] and I have left everything on the field,” Romney told the American public. This is a time of great challenges for America, and I pray the president will be successful in guiding our nation.”

Actually, you voted for free stuff at the expense of others. Of course, you don’t care about that as long as you get your entitlement. That’s OK though, the money will eventually run out and your checks will stop coming. Then what will you do? Get a gun and take it with force?

Just the opposite. Currently, when someone is uninsured and they need medical care, they go to the emergency room anyway, and the cost of treating them falls on everyone else. The ACA actually makes everyone responsible for paying for their own insurance, and therefore prevents that kind of freeloading on the system. And yet, conservatives are dead set against the mandate, go figure.
Now, the superrich demanding more tax cuts at the expense of the deductions currently given to the poor and middle class–that’s asking something for nothing.

Posted on November 9, 2012 at 10:22am@Bodybag. I think you’re on to something. I think this election has the George Soros stamp written all over it. I do believe the election results in the swing states were skewed to favor Obama. Soros threw just too much money into it for anyone to deny him – just like with everything else he has controlled with his money. I had a feeling about this a few days before the election when a liberal rag (can’t remember which – Time, maybe?) had Obama on the cover with the quote. “I got this”. At the time the polls were showing the candidates were neck and neck with Romney having a slight lead. How and why was Obama so sure he would win? Folks, forget America. I just find it very difficult to believe that 11 million fewer people voted this year than in 2008, especially considering that two-thirds of Americans wanted Obamacare overturned. The fact that the government refused to allow paper trails for these voting machines should tip off even the dumbest American that something doesn’t smell right.

I would like to gratefully, humblely thank and implore Mitt Romney.
I thank he and his wife/family for runnig at such a time in our history. I fully believe his morals, character, and abilities would have prepared and protected our nation from the things which are coming from storms and weather patterns; earthquakes, envy resulting in riots, lawlessness, economic destruction, and enemies foreign and domestic. I believe he would have been prudent with the taxes he received and a great steward of our nations wealth. I believe he would have been somber minded, realistic, and careful with the lives of our spouses/children in the military, yet, not weak or a laughingstock of our enemies.
I want to implore him to stay in the public eye. Maybe not to ever run for office again by being a voice of reason, guidance to the conservatives, counselor to businesses, and a moral compass in the middle of the coming chaos. I realize that the media will severely ridicule him but we need his voice and ideas. Please. please Mr Romney take a rest, take a breathe, and comeback to the public eye. The people of America respect you, even those who opposed you ex MSNBC anchor comments.
THANK YOU MR ROMNEY!

People are not willingly going to pay up to $5K additional for an insurance policy that they were accustomed to getting as a benefit perk from their employer. They will simply say, I don’t want the coverage and pay the $700 penalty. Makes financial sense. Now stay with me here; Employers that continue to provide coverage will be ONLY the ones that have an exemption, like the unions, because other employers, which comprise the MAJORITY of the businesses in this country will no longer be able to afford the mandated coverage that the wise men in Washington decided that YOU and I needed to have. Keep reading; do you really think that students, who are the part of the group that Pelosi the ratfaced witch called “freeloaders” are going to be able to afford an insurance plan with a minimum cost of $5-9K per year when they were able to get medical coverage through their school universities? No, once again, they will choose the “penalty” oh, sorry that is a tax now according to Barry and crew. Then there are the illegals; they don’t pay anything anyway, never have, never will. So that money to provide for their sorry butts needs to come from someone. Finally, there are people like me who have worked and paid for everything their entire lives who are NOT going to participate. Fine, tax, whatever; I will not willingly spend 10K when I can just pay a $700 penalty. Why should I? You and yours are the freeloaders; I owe you not

Yes, and then when you do something stupid and end up in the emergency room, I’m going to be the one paying for it. Way to take personal responsibility.
And for what it’s worth, you’re numbers are completely bonkers. The CBO (which is nonpartisan), predicts that 3 to 5 million individuals, at most, will lose employer provided coverage. That’s out of more than 160 million that currently have health care provided by their employers.

But, I work for a company that truly cares about their employees.
Now on the article here. Romney’s campaign could have given me a call anytime after the convention and I would have been able to tell him he would not defeat Obama because of the way his campaign and the RNC conducted his campaign through the convention. You will never be able to win if you tell the new, young members to the Party that they are not welcome. What were they and all of you (who put Paul Supporters down every chance you got) thinking?? Everybody needs to understand this. He lost because he ran a big government, do not listen to the people campaign and basically told all the new vibrant GOP members to F-OFF. We should demand that Reince Preibus step down immediately, and the GOP should be discussing how to win people back. I truly believe at this juncture that taking more of Ron Paul’s stances on Liberty, sound economic policies and less overseas intervention would serve the GOP good. If the GOP does not get their act together by 2016, we may see the Libertarian Party start to take over (which may be a good thing).

First, WHAT BUDGET? We haven’t had one since O has been in office.
Second, there is not equality for all. This is a utopian dream. There will ALWAYS be someone left out.
Third, less wars…look, O took troops out of Iraq and gloated that HE did this. But HE sent thousands back in, the same will be with Afgh.
Fourth, cleaner environment…shutting down coal plants is NOT in American’s interest. If your electric is $200, it will become $800 when he is done. Gas prices now…they are at this level because HE doesn’t want to drill here….HE IS responsible for this..but wait….HE sent tax payer money to Brazil for them to drill oil. So much for the environment since their safety regulations are not equal to ours.
Fifth, if you took ALL the money from the 1% wealthiest in this country, it would not sustain our UN-budget. So increasing the taxes on the wealthy will NOT do it. What it will do is send those companies SCREAMING out of the USA, dropping USA jobs flat. Unemployment projected at 26%..The wealthy and the small businesses in this country is what makes it great.
Lastly, it is moronic thinking to hate the rich. If you get a paycheck..anywhere…any time…for any amount…it is because of a capitalist. I assume that all of those who don’t like the rich, do not work…but wait…they get entitlement benefits…that come from taxes on the rich/middle class. So you DO need the rich and middle class.
Thinking is becoming a dying art form. God B

Appalled by the stupidity of the American electorate…. Morons (there is no other word) cannot engender prosperity, and the idea that monopolistic Federal Power, run by a Fourth Rail of bureaucrats, will create wealth is absurd. Since you seem to be a self-appointed mouthpiece for the Democrats, maybe you can explain, in an intellectually respectful manner, why it is important to you to be controlled by, and have your decisions made by, a large impersonal overbloated government.
Knowing that only a handful of bureaucrats are elected, and the rest are civil servant employees or appointees that the public hasn’t met, do not know, will never see, can you tell me/us what causes you, or entices you, or convinces you, that having your personal decisions as private and as intimate as healthcare made by these faceless people is a superior choice than making these decisions yourself?
Are you more likely now to start a business that gives jobs to unemployed people?

Are you more likely now to save for a college education? If not, are you more likely to borrow for education knowing you will be 65 before you pay back your student loans?

Interesting how 51% to 49% is losing ‘big time” although I have no doubt that BHO and his myrmidons like you will assume a 2% margin of victory is a mandate and cast aside the interests of the 49% who understood the shell game that is Obama.
You might want to write this part down: the 49% who didn’t vote for Emperor Barry are the ones who pay the bills, not the unions or the exploding population of people on the dole.
After all the golden eggs are gone and the goose who lays them has been butchered, there’s no one else left…be sure to explain to your children and grandchildren how you offered them up into a life of servitude.

Cleaner environment, oh yes, because everyone knows that the evil conservatives want us all to drink sewer water and breathe coal dust. More regulations on Wall Street, oh really? Has Barry the wonder pony done that yet? No, he gives those little buddies a pass just like all of the rest of his special friends. Pandering to wealthy, you are obviously someone who thinks that all men being created equally means that we are all supposed to get exactly the same thing. Posted on November 9, 2012 at 12:47pmI am not a Republican or Democrat, I just decide on whose views match mine more closely. I am 32 years old, educated (masters degree), and a divorced mother of a 9 year old son. I do not blame Mitt Romney for his campaigns failure. He stood out to me as a very intelligent, successful businessman, who has a love for his work, family, and faith. So, for me it was really disheartening to hear and read the horrible messages from the Obama administration and mainly from Obama. Obama is our president, but throughout this process he came across to me as a celebrity wannabe and a bully. A bully attacks viciously, Obama compared Romney to pushing grandma off into a lake, he lied about his nursing home tax increases, he vilified Romney as a wealthy businessman who does not care about us, and more importantly that he wants to get richer while we get poorer. Oh and to vote for revenge. For me, comparing the two is like comparing an apple to the bitter grapefruit. Romney has the will and drive of business, success, drive, faith, love of his family, and a positive overall image. Name one thing about this man that came out as scandalous? Very uncommon. Obama, on the other hand, began his campaign attacking, distracting, raising issues between races, religions, sexual orientation and moving Americans backwards, splitting our nation is two. It saddens me that 4 years ago, our nation was at the point of unity (by no means perfect), that we elected our 1st mulatto president. How great was that?

Posted on November 9, 2012 at 1:01pmI was excited to see what possibilities may come under this new era of leadership. I was hugely disappointed by what his administration has and has not done. I find it a real shame it turned out the way it has, because now we are more racially divided than prior to his presidency. That is really sad. I find it even more sad to know that half of our citizens felt he deserved a free pass on everything he has done. I do not know one thing he did that was good or a benefit to anyone other than for the short-term. Long-term, he financially and mentally killed us. Many businesses don’t know whether they can expand, hire people, or whether they can stay open. That is not good. His whole involvement in Libya sickens me to my core. How he got AMERICANS to ignore this is beyond me. How he got half of Americans to just say, hey it happens, its just a fluke!, is beyond me. I take high offense to anyone who feels this way towards these men who lost their lives for no reason. No excuses. Don’t hide from it, take responsibility for it. If he did not have anything to do with their deaths he would be letting his media know exactly what happened and throw whoever is responsible under the big yellow bus. However, he has lied, stone walled, ignored, and blatantly forgot about his role as our nations leader. That is ludicrous. Then to get the support of half of our citizens to support that, baffles me to no end. Romney, not perfect, but a trustworthy alternative who was excited to help us!!

Posted on November 9, 2012 at 9:21amStandardization of the election process has to be addressed. I simply do not believe the results. The numbers do not add up. I have never believed in conspiracies, and generally disregard those who do. However, I believe there is a force, or forces at work behind the scenes which most of America is not aware of. How would one explain the archaic voting process, as well as the differing voting processes of the most powerful nation on this planet? Paper ballots, absentee ballots, service members not getting their ballots, week-long elections in some states, day-long elections in other states, Maine and Nebraska being the only states to split their electoral votes, 110% turnout in some city wards, poll watchers being evicted from polling places, voter ID laws being deemed unconstitutional? I’m at a loss.

Posted on November 9, 2012 at 9:29amI certainly trust paper ballots, counted with members from each candidate’s campaign, over electronic voting machines! During the primaries, Romney won every district where electronic voting machines were used, while he often came in 2nd or 3rd where ballots were counted by hand and the counting was video taped. Take the Adelson Caucus in Nevada for instance – Romney supposedly won Nevada, but when the Adelson caucus ballots were counted live on TV, Ron Paul won by a factor of 3:1. (183 to 61) There were hundreds of other locations where exit polling had Romney coming in 2nd or 3rd, but the electronic voting machines had him winning.

Posted on November 9, 2012 at 9:36amIf you think you’re at a loss, think about old Mitt.
I’ll bet that high on Mitt’s list of “woulda’, shoulda’, coulda’” would be to rewind the clock to the third debate and take a strong shot at Obama for ordering the death of those four men and lying about it. Or, did Mitt really believe that this was such a horrendous act that the MSM would not cover for Obama on this caper? Yeah, Mitt was wrong.
Or, and this is the most frightening option, did Romney not go to Benghazi in the third debate because of what he heard in his top secret briefings between the second and third debate? Did he hear conclusive proof of the gun running to Al Qaeda and Mitt felt that US citizens would be in revolt over the disclosures? That may be why our Sewer Rat-in-Chief looked so complacent during the exchange on Libya in the third debate. He knew that Romney would not reveal what he had learned.
I suspect that we’ll never know!

I’m not talking about the regular democratic party folks. I’m talking about their ‘ends justifies the means, godless, lying, bully thugs’ in power comrades. Romney is a cautious man. There is no way he would have been that comfortable thinking they were going to win without good data.
Checking out some precincts doesn’t back up the ‘Republicans’ didn’t show up comments. Mine had TWO TIMES the republican votes than in ’08 and we know that enthusiasm was around the country. There were hardly any yard signs, bumper stickers, volunteers. How many people do we all know who switched their ’08 vote from Obama to Romney in ’12. There were portions of the typical democratic voting bloc that were now voting for Romney:Jews, blacks, union, Hispanics.
And then look at Obama taking off election day. Showing total disregard for the debates by not ‘showing’ up in the first one. He wasn’t concerned. How could two states that were just pummeled by natural disasters submit their returns early? I’m telling you, I smell a rat. ROMNEY MUST DEMAND RECOUNTS and cross check the voters.
