Here’s What We Know About General Petraeus’ Reported Mistress

(TheBlaze/AP) — Paula Broadwell first met fellow West Point graduate David Petraeus in the spring of 2006, when she was a graduate student at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

He was a lieutenant general working on a counterinsurgency manual that would be tested during his command in Iraq. The university had invited him to give a speech.

Broadwell was in the Army Reserve after being recalled three times to active duty since the Sept. 11 attacks to work on counterterrorism issues and intended to return to active duty or get into the policy world, according to the preface of the Petraeus biography she would later write with a Washington Post editor.

Petraeus, who held much-praised military commands in Iraq and Afghanistan, resigned Friday after admitting he had an extramarital affair, a disclosure that ended the retired four-star general’s civilian career as director of the CIA.

He carried on the affair with Broadwell, now 40, according to several U.S. officials with knowledge of the situation who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss publicly the investigation that led to the resignation. The FBI discovered the relationship by monitoring Petraeus’ emails, after investigators were alerted that Broadwell may have had access to his personal email account, two of the officials said.

Broadwell wrote in the preface to “All In: The Education of General David Petraeus,” published by Penguin in January, that while at Harvard Petraeus passed along his card and offered to help her academic work on leadership.

“I later discovered that he was famous for this type of mentoring and networking, especially with aspiring soldier-scholars,” Broadwell wrote, adding that she “took full advantage of his open-door policy to seek insight and share perspectives.”

Broadwell is a research associate at Harvard’s Center for Public Leadership and a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of War Studies at King’s College London, according to her biography on Penguin’s website. According to the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer, she grew up in North Dakota and moved to Charlotte more than three years ago with her husband, a radiologist, and their two young sons.

The book began as research for her dissertation, a case study of Petraeus’ leadership. It evolved into an authorized biography written with Washington Post editor Vernon Loeb after President Barack Obama put Petraeus in charge of Afghanistan in 2010.

Davis Petraeus, standing with his wife Holly, participates in an armed forces farewell tribute and retirement ceremony at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, Va. (Photo: AP)

Two years earlier, she wrote in the book’s preface, while visiting Washington he had invited her to join him and his team for a run along the Potomac River.

“I’d earned varsity letters in cross-country and indoor and outdoor track and finished at the top of my class for athletics at West Point; I wanted to see if he could keep stride during an interview. Instead it became a test for me,” she wrote. He eventually increased the pace “until the talk turned to heavy breathing, and we reached a 6-minute-per-mile pace. It was a signature Petraeus move. I think I passed the test, but I didn’t bother to transcribe the interview.”

In the Army Reserve, she specialized in military intelligence, spending time at the U.S. Special Operations Command and the FBI Counterterrorism Task Forces before pursuing an academic career, according to her Penguin bio. She “lived, worked, or traveled in more than 60 countries during more than 15 years of military service and work in geopolitical analysis and counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations,” her bio states.

Broadwell made multiple trips to Afghanistan, with unprecedented access to Petraeus, and also spent time with his commanders across the country.

When Petraeus left the military and took the job at the CIA, Broadwell kept in contact with him and sometimes was invited to his office for events such as his meeting with actress Angelina Jolie.

“History has yet to fully judge Petraeus’ service in Iraq and Afghanistan, his impact on the U.S. military and his rank among America’s wartime leaders,” Broadwell wrote in the preface. “But there is no denying that he achieved a great deal during his 37-year Army career, not the least of which was regaining the strategic initiative in both wars” after Sept. 11, 2001.

“His critics fault him for ambition and self-promotion. I will note in the pages that follow that he is driven and goal-oriented, but his energy, optimism and will to win stand out more for me than the qualities seized on by his critics.”

With the book done, Broadwell told friends she was returning to her dissertation, using part of her research on Petraeus to complete her doctorate.

The Daily Mail notes that Broadwell had what they describe to be an incredibly “awkward” interview with Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart in January, where he questioned her about how she gained such unprecedented access to the general.

While most biographies are written with a tinge of controversy, he added, the message from “All In,” seems to be “is [Petraeus] awesome, or incredibly awesome?”

The bottom line is that he failed to keep his zipper up. It is a personal affront to those of us in the male gender pool…. that for some reason all it takes is some woman’s cleavage, a little wink and a nod, or some other CFM sign by her and then all of a sudden some sort of raging testosterone river suddenly appears. If you don’t know what CFM alludes to…the middle word rhymes with truck. I think women are beautiful creatures to be sure…although Hillary Clinton and Madelaine Albright are exceptions…..but seriously people….any person of any gender in a position of access to and in possession of secret information…..that can’t keep their zippers and or bras on….is NOT a hero in any way….they have allowed their decision making process to be destroyed by something as ordinary and run of the mill and fleeting as an orgasm. It is not only a diminution of the value of intimacy between two people…..it is actually sadly pathetic. And now look at him…..was it worth it Petraeus? For those of you who prefer to treat this as a “private matter”…..indeed it is….this man was leading privates and sergeants in battle in deadly places. Those are the privates that matter…not that little worm in between his legs. He and all the other foolish men before him who for some reason could not keep their zippers up….are all part of the same subset group of men called cheating pigs. Lying cheating pigs…no matter who you are…a cheater is a cheater. Period.

King David covered up an affair and pregnancy with a murder. Petraeus stopped at the affair. He deserves some respect for that, and even should be allowed to repent. Kennedy broke his marriage vows, and had nothing against staying in office. Neither did Clinton. Obama may or may not be cheating on his wife, but he is letting our people die, and is screwing us as a nation. I say we keep Petraeus, and have Obama resign.

      General Stanley McChrystal
      Rear Adm. Charles M. Gaouette

      General David Petraeus

Since we live in a country where all the military service is done by 1/2 of 1% of the population, generals get seen as either satan or Jesus. He’s neither. He’s an okay general who did an okay job in Iraq. I was there before the surge. We all knew we needed more troops there; he got that done. Then, he furthered his career by getting into bed with Obama and Hillary. Generals are political.

Adultery is and has been all too common in the military. It became worse with the dissolution of the Women’s Army Corps (1974 ((I was there))) and full integration into Regular Army. It is a court martial offense – fraternization; it makes it especially offensive with the involvement of an extremely high ranking officer, i.e. Petraeus.

The social experiment using women in the military crafted by Dems has failed. It’s time to look at the tax payer dollar amount this failed experiment has cost. The Pat Schroeders along with DACOWITS, (Defense Advisory Committee On Women In The Service) sought to place women in combat in order to get more women in high ranking positions. It’s time to look at the fallout, cut losses, and place soldiers according to mission needs. It’s not sexist. It’s practical.

Biology between men and women has been virtually ignored for 30 or more years now by womens’ groups who are proving to have no respect for women. There are pregnancies, abortions, birth control, rape, harassment et al.

To revisit this issue in the face of economic devastation facing every American, it’s about time to reevaluate just how we put those who serve in harms way before they ever even reach the battlefield.

Self control – I agree. Biology can’t continue to be ignored. This striving for gender neutrality is delusional. Put men together with less women in tight quarters and there are issues.

Granted the woman who wrote the book piqued his interest. She was military, a runner, smart. One could argue that many females would fit that bill. Who made the first move? Was it her? Him? I don’t really care to know the details. What I do know for sure is that had a guy with the same background been doing the research, this wouldn’t have been an issue.

Add gays in the military, in high places, and the factthat some men absolutely abhor being ogled by same.

Mrs Petraeus should be demeaned for being 60 ish. Shame on everyone who thinks and older woman deserves it when her powerful spouse gets randy with a younger bimbo. No respect. The waist line often does widen.

Harry Truman loved Bess Truman. Someone asked him how he thought Bess looked and he replied with dignity “About as good as a woman her age should look”. Love runs ddper in some than others and so does honor and morals.

But men are subject to available bimbos. Her doctor husband should sue Petraeus or his own wife for unauthorized use of the boob job he purchased.

have you noticed that most women you know personally that wheedle a boob job out of their hubbies, leave them for a new model?

Ethel Merman had it right when she said what a woman needed at each decade of her life. lloks in one, brains in 30′s, personality in 40′s(?) and cold hard cah in her 60′s.

His girlfriend is about his son ‘s age….I hope she was at least commissioned in some form of combat arms so she too can wear the highly sought after “Combat Action Badge” for being 300 miles from any one mortar round lobbed in her general direction. 2012 may very well be the end of this country.

It is broken. People during the Revolution must have been scared, but they broke from the tyranny across the pond. Are we at the end of the days of our nation? How one group of people can perpetuate lies, ignore grievous scandal, and prosper? I don’t know. It’s like we’re watching America die a slow death.

I have to believe there are good outstanding people with broken hearts who will make painstaking sacrifices to get her back. We can’t continue to ignore God’s laws and think everything is going to be just great.

I kinda wonder though if the real story is that he can’t comment on the Pres while he wears the uniform. Once he’s a civilian – may loose his pension – he can release all information relating to, not only the Benghazi massacre, but of all this administrations impediments.

The more I ponder this, the more I am convinced this woman was hired by Obama. Look at her profile. She is an exceptional woman, and so well-rounded even a young man with a lovely wife would have been tempted, let alone an older man deployed in a rat hole, with a wife at home who looks like his mother (sorry, ladies, just stating the facts).

Her military career is also exceptional. They knew it would require an extraordinary military woman to wow the general, and they found her. Notice that at first she said she just wanted some time for her dissertation (about him – red flag). Then, once she had gained access to him, it became a biography. That appealed to his manly and professional pride even more, and it also gave her much more private time with him.

Frankly, Petraeus did not stand a chance. There is always that one woman out there who turns out to be perfect. The Bible says when you come across her, flee. If you delude yourself into thinking you can spend hours with her and stay clean, you are a fool.

Let’s have some pity for his wife. They’ve been married a long, long time.

The “authoress” however, has more than likely been a military “project.” She got ahead because of …. (drum roll, please) ….. you guessed it!!! Afirmative Action! The military – esp the Army, it seems – love love love to take a sharp seemingly interested young woman and promote her. When Congress – and the Armed Services Committee (along w/female factions) see the development of a young female officer they see the acquisition of power for women. This furthers their cause. Just maybe someday there will be a female Gen Petraeus.

Ta da!!!!!! A miniature version of the Great Fall.

But hey…..like a good Dem, he’ll be put up as a presidential candidate in 2016…..mark my words. How ironic is that? The dude the left vilified when he was under Bush, was forced to praise him when Obama picked him and now must fight for his honor less soul to save face. Best comedy ever!

Unfortunately, like Candy “Butterball” Crowley told Romney when he reminded her it was his turn to speak, “It doesn’t quite work like that.”

The media will make sure Petraeus is remembered for his affair. No, wait. He will also go down in history as the man who relayed false/inaccurate intel on the ongoing attack in Benghazi, according to the incontestable assertions of Obama, Biden, Clinton, Rice and Carney.

Unless of course you’re referring to their loyalty. Republicans have proven ad nauseum thier inability to support other Republicans. It’s a boon in a way and a curse in another way.

I still think this is a diversion from something bigger. It is big, and you can certainly feel for the General and his mistress – her kids, his kids, the grandkids … etc. (It really is a mess).

There’s something about the whole scandal, though. Release was detained until after the election.
We’re finding out there are many things being turned on their heads.

Something is not right in this story. The FBI time would be better spent on the subversion going on INSIDE THE White House and Administration and Congress. Communists and Islamists….bad for America. Doing this to a General seems like something really rotten was cooked up by the same White House that should be being WATCHED by the FBI.

It really started with the clinton escapades. Look at clinton now. He should have resigned without incident, but showed himself to be a truly disgusting human being in front of all the world. Yet, the crowds adore him even more now after disgracing the office of the presidency, his wife and family. I don’t care who the scandals are about, but they should do the honorable thing and resign as Petreaus has. But, Petreaus must now do the honorable thing for his country and testify before congress on Benghazi. If he doesn’t, his long service to the country will mean nothing.

What led to the FBI believing she had access to his emails? Rumor, or was there more evidence? That should be asked. So the General who has handled TS/SCI information for over 30 years was going to let some Shot of Leg have access to the Mother Lode of intelligence.

What does the DCI know? Everything. General you where set up.

Having one intelligence agency working against another does not bode well for this country. Very KGB like.

Would not be surprised if the IT department of the CIA pointed the FBI in the direction of the good Director. My take on this “take down” of one of the most powerful men on Earth is that the pros in the intelligence community have had it with our Sewer Rat-in-Chief.

I believe that Petraeus was set up by his own people, to reward his treasonous testimony to Congress about the video being the cause of the attack at Benghazi. Taking down a big man like Petraeus is fair warning to everyone in the chain of command that night to resign or face similar ends.

Obama will find that he comes under serious attack for his Man’s Country flings, association with Chicago mobsters and declaration of Indonesian citizenship on college applications. The pros at CIA are the types who can make those disclosures happen and Barry Soetoro is their prize target.

You don’t abandon two ex-CIA men on a rooftop in the desert and expect to have a long retirement on an exotic beach. Ain’t gonna’ happen for anybody involved in the Benghazi treason.
